It’s coiled so tight. Wrapped around my very soul, the tendrils of hate burning incessantly as they burrow deeper. The darkness has claimed me for its own… and I refuse to disappoint it.
The blood of my father has coated my hands along with a few others, but I won’t stop now. This is only the beginning and I have a list of wrongs that I need to make right. I will do anything to protect the ones I love… even if it means more blood on my hands.
This second book really amped up the darkness factor as Ember finally embraced her darkness completely, she’s definitely one girl you don’t want to mess with. This had plenty of action and Ember and Vin have moved up to the next level in their relationship and are now completely solid together. He understands and accepts Embers need for blood and vengeance and stands by his girl completely, he just gets her and his love is unconditional.
A lot does happen here and we get some new players added to the mix in the form of Embers brothers to further shake things up. As for Embers besties well we didn’t get to see that much of Adri here and what we did see I wasn’t really a fan of but Travis did come into his own and it’s very apparent that he’s been holding a great deal back, surprisingly it’s Vin that picks up the slack here stepping up and coming through for his brother despite there previous volatile history.
This had twists and turns combined with plenty of steamy heat. It had a definite darker vibe compared to the first book and discounting that finale and the events preceding we really just skated the lines between black and white right or wrong here these markers are totally obliterated and smashed to smithereens. Ember is like the angel of death personified and those who face her wrath better beware.
I’m really liking this series a lot it’s bloody and violent and Ember is all things psychotic but I can’t help but like her and she has such a big heart for those she calls hers.
This was even better than the first book of this series! Loved it. It definitely doesn't fall prey to the second book slump.
So, in the last book we saw the FMC and her father go head to head. The fade to black death scene at the end is completely remedied here in this book by way of flashbacks.
Things get pretty dark and there is torture, gore, and death. The previous death at the end of the last book is elucidated. It explains and adds to the overall story showing her progression towards violence and crime.
She is still participating in the MMA fights to the death, but she is also working towards a goal of solidifying her own district in Toronto.
Trigger warnings: violence, fighting, gore, torture, swearing, underage drinking, murdering pedophiles and other miscreants and such under the guise of being an assassin, detailed sex scenes, death of family members and resulting grief, etc.
Highly recommend this book if you have read the first one and you like dark books.
"Into Darkness" is the second book of the "Whitsborough Chronicles" series by the author C.A. Rene. Get ready to meet Vin and Em again!
After that first book , I was so excited to meet these two again and those side characters too. This book continued from where the first one ended and it was a good read for me.
The storyline is good and there was a lot of character development. The Twists and turns were a bit unexpected and those were the ones I enjoyed the most. The book was not that lengthy and there were parts where things just felt dull and I had to force myself to keep reading , but it was good on an overall basis. I am glad that Em and Vin got their deserved ending and now other characters can also have their books!!
A definite recommendation to all the dark Romance lovers out there!
I've got this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Beware, this gets darker than the last book. If you are in, as I was, then buckle up and take the west ride!
This books truly is darker and better than the first one. Yes, it took me longer to read, but it was only because I was super hyped about it and then I didn't want to ruin the hype, so I slowed down. I slowed down to the point when I couldn't read, but then I picked it back up and boom! I'm finished!
So this book is 100% worth the read! C.A. Rene truly knows how to keep the storyline going and interesting. I was worried that the hype I felt won't be give in this book, but the truth is I got so much more.
Ember is truly dark, not just by the type of clothing she wears, but her soul is dark. Somewhere along there I can sympathise with her, but no blood for me. I love the way she has confidence and strength + a huge bonus is = she knows how to protect herself & her family...she doesn't need anyone doing it for her.
Yes, Ember is our dark spirit. This book points out how exactly our lives could be if we haven't got lucky to live a better life.
Honestly? There's a lot about this book that I loved. Yes, for me it was mostly the darkness and the steamy scenes, you know. But after all I loved seeing a "different" side of the life. We don't always choose where we are born or to whom, but we can always come out as a fighter and stronger!
I've got much more to add here, but I won't. It wouldn't truly be related to the book's storyline, more to the feelings and depth of it.
One thing is for damn sure! This second book is worth the read! I can't wait torrid the 3rd, which I think is Travis's book.
This is the continuation of Ember story. After the events which took place in the end of Through the Pain, Ember has found her “calling” and succumbed into darkness. She has a clear list of what she wants to do, and let’s just say that the secrets and twists keep coming, you never get bored with this series, it keeps getting better and better.
This book is full of action and explicit content, dark and beautiful. It is hard to believe that the characters are a bunch of teenagers. Whereas the first book was zero-mild dark, this one is darker, a complete upgrade from the first one, and I love it.
I liked the relationship between Ember and Vin, how supportive Vin is, and how he helps her to achieve her “dreams”. I am intrigued by Emmett, curious, just curious. And Travis… I think there is a story in progress here. I can’t wait to read more about Ember and Vin and see where the storyline takes us.
P.S. As this has some great descriptions of actions please be advised that there are a lot of triggers.
When I fight I let myself become numb, no emotions to cloud my judgment but I can usually bring myself out of it after a few hours. This time I think I stayed in too long, I let the inky black evil part of my soul devour me so I could do what I needed to do for vengeance. Revenge is sweet, I don’t care what people say it really is sweet. -Ember
This just about sums it up. Down the rabbit hole we go, getting darker and darker. I fucking love it and this review is probably shit because I am currently overwhelmed and dying to dive into book 3, so you'be been warned.
The blood lust in Into Darkness is fucking real. We pick up exactly where we left off in Through the Pain, book 1 of the Whitsborough Chronicles. After Ember murders her father, we start to see flashbacks and nightmares of what she has done, but she doesn't regret it. She welcomes this feeling with open arms, finally embracing her darkness. But the darkness can only be sated when she kills now.
This darkness I’ve succumbed to is cold and it feels like I’m finally where I belong.
Family means the most to Ember after losing her mother, the only family she has ever known. We learn that she not only has a twin brother, but an older half brother as well. The family and dynamic she has increases and changes quite a bit in this book.
“Ember, I told you before, this is unconditional. I don’t have a choice anymore.” I shake my head, “I will love you forever, no matter what you do.” -Vin
Ember is out for blood after events just keep spiraling out of control. Nobody fucks with what is hers, and she's about to make that a known lesson after what is taken from her once more happens.
“Tell me what you’re feeling.” He whispers from the other side. “Like I want to kill, to feel someone’s blood coat my hands as I break open flesh.” I answer with a voice sounding heavy with lust. I hear his intake of breath and it makes me continue, “I want to feel bone crushing under my fists and watch as life slowly leaves someone’s eyes until they look scared, lost then vacant.” “Fuck.” He sighs from the other side. “That’s dark, Em.”
This series is getting better as I read. For real, the buildup is FANTASTIC!!! Ember is proving to be a force and I can't help but feel somewhat kindred to her. I didn't see this series as actually being dark but dang. I have changed my mind. This is a major must read for anyone that thrives on a kick butt FMC
These characters have really wormed their way into my heart and refuse to leave. The anger and heart ache is so real, and I love watching them slowly come together as a family. I cant wait to see more of Ember and Vin, but I am looking forward to reading more about the others in the next book!
Another amazing book in this series! I will warn you that this has some triggers in it but if the mention of rape doesn't bother you you need to read this book. Its dark and twisted but oh so beautiful at the same time.
I fell in love with Ember in book one and my love for her has only grown!!! She is fierce and one crazy chick. But in a good way! Vin is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to read more about this group of friends and to see how Emmett adjusts to everything. Definitely worth 5 stars!
This author is a first for me. However, the genre is not.
This is book two in the series. As I have not read the first, I am going in blind.
Picking up this book, be prepared for these characters to burrow their way into your heart. Ember and Vin will take you on a roller coaster. They will have you feeling all the feels as we watch their story unfold and intertwine as they come together as a whole.
Our FMC, Ember, is a woman you do not want to cross. She has come to accept who and what she is. She is comfortable in her relationship with Vin, and he accepts and understands Ember’s need for justice because he loves her and will stand by her no matter what.
If you love a story with character development, twists and turns, steamy yet spicy scenes, violence, murder, and mental health topics, then this book is definitely for you.
Highly recommend both the author and the book.
I received an ARC. Therefore, I am submitting a voluntary review.
That rating STANDS with the rewrite, I'm never ready but I am SO ready. You'll understand when you read it. 🤣
Into darkness? More like fade to flipping black. I was warned, I knew it was coming, sort of. I expected dark, I mean it's in the title. I just...who knew the pages of one book could contain so much heartache? Let me get a moment of silence.
Ember has been through it. And back again. And this time Vin was there with her, her whole crew has seen some stuff. Even Sharla. This book was written gorgeously but, damn. Can I get a team lift? This is HEAVY.
Dark scale broke.
I'm not ready for book 3 am I? Of course not. But I'm on my way anyhow! Here I go, tra la la Finding the Light!!
Into Darkness is book 2 in the Whitsborough Chronicles.
We have darkness people! I loved the sweeter side to book 1, getting to know the characters and the Whitsborough world, however Into Darkness took this series up a notch or ten !! Ember transforms from a strong fighting girl (reminder these kids are only 17ish) to a girl who needs something a little more but now she’s also got revenge on the brain. Big twists and painful truths uncovered in this one. So excited to find out what happens next!!!
Ember returns home lost ... the girl her new family grew to know and love shut herself down completely , becoming someone closed off and letting herself fade deeper into the dark . Only for her family to try an pull her back into the light.
This was a great second installment to the first story . You get a very detailed description of the events that transpired from the ending of book 1 ... They're so many twist an turns in this second book that'll have you keeping the pages going so much mystery involving this girls life , things she discovered about her mother an the past that she had kept hidden ...Ember finally gets the answers she was looking for in this story and the author definitely did not disappoint .. I loved emberlise and vin's story it's not your average love story ! I'm sad to see them go but I feel like it wasn't the end of their story maybe after book 3 (which is Travis's story)
Safe to say I have most certainly found another author that is added to my list of favorites and I cannot wait to read more by her .
Omg! What a read!!!! It just keeps getting deeper and deeper. . Just when you thought the scandals have come to light more surface and the web of secrets spread. So much happening and shocking moments, you don’t want to miss this dark read! . Such a gripping, thrilling, dark and scandalous read! I loved every moment of this book! I laughed, I cried, I was in denial, I had doubt, I experienced it all. This plot is so thick and heavy with so many layers it’s such a ride reading and Some plot twists to throw you for a loop just when you think you have it figured out. . I’m consumed by this story and I hope it never ends! Some growth from all our characters or relapse in some cases. The chemistry and connection between our main characters is sizzling. The dynamics complement each other and keep the story interesting but I also love how the author can have you living a character then hating them in the same sentence. . This book is so compelling, and vivid your transported into this book from the first word. I loved every minute of this dark world and hope to stay immersed in it for a while yet. I’m not sure what that says about me, but I’ll accept it either way. . If you are looking for a book with dark tones, trigger warnings, humour, steam and a gripping plot that will consume your soul, then look no further! C.A Rene is a genius and these books need to be read by everyone ASAP! I can’t wait for more!
I immediately dove into this book when I finished Through the Pain because I craved more and it delivered in a huge way. It’s a whole lot darker and you discover things and see different sides of people that you didn’t in book one. This book definitely takes things up a few notches.
Ember is a force to be reckoned. Especially when you go after the people she loves.
The thing about this book that makes it so special is the authors way with words. Her ability to convey exactly what her characters are feeling. I felt every emotion Ember experienced. I felt gut wrenching pain with tears streaming down my face, I felt uncontrollable anger, I felt her panic and I felt her happiness. I felt the urge to jump Vin’s bones every second of the story. This kind of book just captures you and doesn’t let you go.
I will warn you this is not a story for the faint of heart. It has plenty of triggers including kidnap, torture, murder, rape, child abuse and assault. But, If you don’t mind the darker side of things, this book is phenomenal.
I absolutely love love loved book 1 and couldn’t wait for this book to come out!!! AND I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! this one blew my mind, broke my heart, and then blew my mind some more. Once I started I couldn’t put it down till the last page.
Ember is dealing with all the dark feelings she is having after everything that happened at the end of book 1. She is trying to figure out how to come out of the darkness. Thank goodness she has her brothers, Vin and her friends. I loved Embers relationship with Vin they are soulmates!! They are my favorite book couple! And Emmett ugh! He is just so perfect!! I loved reading about him and Embers relationship and watching them become closer through this book!!!
No spoilers from me!!! But if you read book 1 and loved it read this book!!
There were too many secrets she kept and I’m wondering how the fuck she slept at night. How could she look at me and not feel some sort of guilt about keeping a whole family from me?
Ember is shrouded by darkness, has a thirst for blood and lusts in ensuring any who have wronged her or her family get their rightful punishment. She thinks everything through to the final detail as she tries to put the pieces back where they belong. She values family and she can’t lose anyone else close to her, as it will be the one thing she can’t come back from. The sleepy little town of Whitsborough has many secrets to hide. Next book is Finding the Light and I’m about to lose myself in the pages.
This had me just as hooked, if not more so than the first book. Ember is going down a darker path, and thankfully, she isn't alone now to deal with it all. My heart breaks for her and all that she has lost, so Vin's unwavering loyalty and love despite her actions is exactly what I want from her. Lots more secrets are uncovered so need to be careful in review as don't want to spoil but this definitely is a must read for me and will remain on my reread list as well as those I recommend. I am looking forward to reading the next book when it's released.
This second book just smashed it. So very good and addictive right from the start. Yet again Embers whole world explodes and this girl has to either crumble and let her grief win or rise above it all and become the dark warrior that she was destined to become. This dark blood soaked tale of love, death, revenge and hot as f*ck passion has me completely addicted. I need more now.
What a great book. Wow!!! Ember is strong and vengeful. She learns a lot of things and also looses the most important people. Life as ember knows it is full of skilled moves and planning. Vin is great support system for her. Her brothers step up in her life and more secrets are revealed. You need to read this series definitely won’t regret.
I loved it!! This book exceeded my expectations and, seriously, it was better than the first! This book darkens the story even more and Ember becomes even more of a badass. Which I didn’t think was possible! The path Ember is on to keep her family safe is wild and crazy. If you like sexy books with a dark twist definitely add this series to your TBR list!
I absolutely loved this series. Awesome character building, exciting storyline, strong heroin, and steamy scenes…just excellent! Rene is amazing at setting a scene. Ember is a force that will have her enemies wishing for death!
This 2nd book was when Ember really came into her own, I had to gird my loins to read this one. I knew it was going to be rough and traumatizing and I was right, and it was way worse than i ever expected but in the best way...I could not put this one down. Vin and Em are each others mate to their soul. I dont think I have ever read a pair of characters that have been portrayed in such a detailed real way. I love love love this depth and grittiness that is shown. The POVs are the best. They are so detailed and amazing. I cant even explain it. The things that happen in this 2nd book are brutal. so incredibly brutal and the emergence of The Black Slaughter has occurred. IF that name doesnt pull you in then i dont know what will.. What does that mean you ask? HA HA HA Well you just have to read it. I could not even begin to explain it to you. This 2nd book is dark and really takes us to the bowels of the town. She starts to rid the town of corruption but it takes a toll on her. Shes broken and grieving and Vin is right there with her through it all. "You have to free the demons inside because thats where your hell is"..... "inside"-Vin "How do you know that?"-Em "Thats where mine are too"-Vin God, you have to love Vin. I just cant with them. I highly highly recommend this series but do take the triggers VERY seriously...One of the best series of 2020
Into the Darkness is the second book in Whitsborough Chronicles by C.A. Rene and it picks up right where Through the Pain left off. This book is narrated from the dual POV of Ember and Vin which I loved because I felt like I got to know not only more about Vin but also more about his thoughts.
I love how it continues with the twist that I never saw coming. I knew that this was just the beginning of the secrets that would be revealed in this book and oh boy how right I was. This story focuses on how Ember has finally given into the darkness that lives inside her. Hello darkness, my old friend should definitely be the theme song here. At first Ember keeps what happened to her a big secret because she was worried what everybody would think. I love how supportive Vin is of Ember once he finds out what she did. I liked learning more about Carmelo and Emmett because they were definitely interesting characters.
This book was definitely a lot darker than Through the Pain and i absolutely loved it.
I recieved an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion.
This book was a fucking blast. I couldn't wish for better. We could see a darker side of Ember, a murderous one, and she's not afraid to use for her own benefit, and the ones she calls family. She's so young, only seventeen, but she thinks and acts so much older. The things she lived and had to do made her grow faster than she should, but it also made her who she is. Strong, mature and protective of her own, doing everything for their safety, no matter the risks. She's a fucking weapon. Vin is definitely her soul mate, the way those two work is fucking explosive. His unconditional love and dedication for Ember is beautiful. The dynamic of their relationships its fucking amazing, they're playful and, at the same time, their darkness knows each other. It's a match made in hell, but it works so well. The shit that happened in this book broke my heart, I can't believe this author killed one of my favorite characters, I'm gutted. I can't wait to read the next book and see more of Ember's vigilant ways 🖤
This is book two of whitsborough chronicles by C.A.Rene and Omfg what a ride that was. I laughed, I cried, I swooned and I gasped all the way through. Ember is a bad ass and I have a mad girl crush on her. Vin is the light to her darkness and I just love him. Then we have trav who my heart is breaking for as he went through so much that he kept bottled up for years but it all comes to light in this book.
The ending is awesome and that scum got what he deserved. It leaves you hanging and wanting to know what happens next in the series as there is so much more to uncover.
If you haven’t read this book then get it done or added to your tbr as you’re missing out on this series, as it awesome.
After we got teased with a darker storyline towards the end of the first book, I was so ready for more. And CA Rene definitely delivered with this book!
I loved Ember’s development in this one. She’s such a strong heroine. Her darkness and thirst for blood are at all time high and she’s ready to embrace it and get revenge. Her relationship with Vin only gets stronger and I loved how he is her rock through everything. They are perfect soulmates!
There are also new side characters introduced and I loved how close Ember and Emmett became. And I can’t wait for Travis’ story!
The storyline was amazingly well written. I was completely hooked and engaged in the story from the first page. I’m so glad I found this author! Can’t wait to read more!
