Solid mystery in a continuing series. Not a stand-alone.
This murder mystery starts off fast and keeps going at a good pace, but with scant clues, plus denouement coming late in the book. As always, the main characters—Detective Clint Wolf and Police Chief Susan Wolf—carry the storyline, as do the superb secondary characters. I especially like Detective Amy Cooke’s subplot, which details her continuing struggles post-recovery from life-threatening injuries—suffered from a barrage of M-16 bullets. Author BJ Bourg again weaves a complicated murder storyline with good twists and several excellent red herrings.
In rating this book, I will be in the minority of reviewers—for personal reasons—which have to do with the horrific manner and method of death of a man suffering from mental illness. I read a lot of crime fiction, so I’ve read much worse. Yet, my reaction was and still is visceral. I admit that I wholeheartedly agree with Detective Wolfe’s fury and dark thoughts. However, in order to finish this book, I skipped any reiteration of the dead man’s injuries. Plus, had to I speed-skim to the end, so I could leave a review. Apologies to BJ Bourg for 2.5 stars rating.
I doubt most readers will react as I did, so please take this review with a shaker of salt.
