I was born and brought up in the north of England, and worked for many years as the managing director of an interactive media company. I wrote every day - everything from creative proposals to user manuals - but most exciting of all was writing interactive dramas - including for the Cluedo (Clue in the US) interactive games. I was fortunate enough to sell my company in 2000 and we moved to Italy where we bought and restored an old country house.

I have published six full length novels and one novella, and my seventh Come a Little Closer is due for release in 2018. I now live on the beautiful island of Alderney in the Channel Islands, where I write full time.

When I subscribed to the author’s newsletter, I was sent a VERY short story, so here is a VERY short review..

A woman returns home from a party to find a man she doesn’t know, cooking dinner in her house.

Will she choose to join him?

What would you do?

Rachel Abbott invites you to answer that question on her website. It was fun to read this sample of her writing and I bet she is having fun reading the replies!

Emma is hungover and just wants to go home and rest. When she gets in the door, she hears a man singing and cooking dinner. She had no idea who he is, but he knows her.

This is a very quick short story you get from signing up to Rachel Abbott's newsletter. It was quite suspenseful for how short it was. It's a great introduction to her writing if you've never read her work before!

*Deadly Hangover*

**3.5 Stars**

This is a short story and a taster of Rachel Abbott’s work.

Even though it is a short story I got a sense of the tension the lead character felt when she arrives home to a stranger in her house. She has no idea how he got in and why is he cooking? He knows her name, she feels she must get away from him. Her raging hangover does not provide any clarity

And then it happens, a call from her friend and far too late the penny drops!!!

4.5* The story is simply laid out in the book blurb. A young woman returns home to find a stranger making dinner in her kitchen. He greets her as though they have met before! Who is this man? How did he get into her home?

There is fear and panic in the young woman. She is terrified as you might expect. She takes action. Action she is likely to regret – or will she?

As the backstory is revealed with regard to what has transpired we realise that a memory can be distorted or forgotten in certain situations or because of our own actions. Assumptions are then made based on this lack of memory. We do something out of fear and out of character. Something that is later regretted yet is not a thing that we can change.

What a wonderfully dark tale we are treated to! In three chapters we have a story that tells us about how a young woman feels as she gets home from work to find a stranger, An Uninvited Guest cooking dinner in her kitchen but is this what it seems or is there something else going on? Small but powerful this story packs a punch!

_______
Read for #NovNov24 The Uninvited Guest comes in at under 20pp which means it’s well within the ‘under 200pp’ limit and perhaps shorter than would normally be acceptable but this challenge is very much a supportive one only putting an upper limit.

This was a very fast read! Loved the idea of this little thriller all packaged up into a neat little box.

This is a (very) short story about a woman who comes home from work to find a man that she doesn't know cooking dinner in her kitchen. She's scared and puzzled by how he acts - kind, and as if he knows her - yet she can't help thinking about the recent murder that took place in her neighborhood.

There's a slightly awkward little break in the story before the final wrap-up, which, honestly, I didn't see coming.

I wouldn't mind if the author took this short story and made a short novel out of it.

If this is an accurate introduction to Rachel Abbot’s style of writing I’m hooked! This 3 chapter story grabbed me by the throat and wouldn’t let go-I wish it was longer. She managed to convey the whole tale in a few short pages and I’ll be looking for more to read by her. Thank you, Rachel, for this short story!

By signing up to the authors newsletter, I received a short story to read.

When Emma returns home to find a man cooking a meal in her kitchen, a man she doesn’t know, she’s left bewildered and no clue how to deal with the situation.

This story held my interest and actually ended with me gobsmacked! I certainly didn’t see that ending coming. What an introduction to a new author for me and I shall definitely be adding the authors books to my to be read pile.

An uninvited guest by Rachel Abbott is a short story with sinister overtones. Who is that man in her house, why is he there, is she safe?

The problem I have with short stories are they’re usually very good so I want them to be a full novel!

Great wee read 5 ⭐️

Interesting story, albeit being only 18 pages long. I think this would set very nicely, the premise for a promising thriller - should the story be expanded upon.
