Claiming His Queen

Rate this book
The world on the outside of the law has rules.
At least -- the world I run does . . .

Rule number one -- you take from me and I will take from you -- whatever you value the most.
I will take it -- and -- I will keep it . . .

When a Vieth orphans kills one of my men, Karen Vieth offers her daughter as payment to soothe my anger.

Cora Vieth is a quiet, beautiful woman but she doesn’t settle my spirit.
Instead, she fires lusts I didn’t realize I had.

I’m not supposed to keep Cora, not if I want peace with the Vieth orphans -- but there’s no way I’m giving her back either.
If the city turns red as I claim my queen so be it.

Claiming His Queen de Ella Goode

Argumento:

"Claiming His Queen" is the story of Cora and Aidon.

A dark mafia romance, in which the heroine is sold to the hero for power play. Her mother wants her to seduce him, he thinks he knows her identity and will be immune to her. Soon attraction strikes, but their world is filled with betrayals and bad people. It's balanced by some hot romance between MCs, and loads of bloodshed and adventures.

Enjoyed it!

O no?

After an odd start, I have to admit - this is my favorite Ella Goode book so far.

I know! I love her work, how could I possibly choose a favorite? Well, I just did. Aidon and Cora are awesome. Particularly Cora. She’s the perfect sweet virgin with a backbone that actually made choices a sweet virgin with a backbone would make.

We’ve all read these novella heroines...they usually go from zero to sex kitten in a matter of paragraphs. Cora wasn’t like that. She had sex kitten in her (she wouldn’t be an Ella heroine if she didn’t), but it progressed realistically even in the very shortened time frame of the book.

For the record, it all happens in like 3 days, but still, somehow, it totally worked for me.

WARNING / HEADS UP - when I started this book I was confused beyond measure. Was this one of the contemporary romances that Ella usually writes? Or some Sci-Fi, other worldly, paranormal story that I’m not prepped for? - Don’t get me wrong, I love paranormal, but I don’t expect it from Ella - Turns out, it is contemporary. And while the setting is pretty ambiguous it’s set in modern times.

Why did I question that this was actually an Ella book for about the first 3-4 chapters ?

These names!

I understand that unique character names are important in books. But all of these names felt like they were meant for other places. Cora? Fine totally believable. Aidon? Well, it’s not spelled right, but I can get behind it. It’s very possible this is set in a Mediterranean nation where there are names and spellings I don’t know. Cora could definitely be Italian or Greek. But then we just got progressively weird.

Poppy - okay it’s a nickname for Penelope, totally fine. Wait, Poppy is a GUY?? Bran - okay now we’re in Winterfell. Hunt - we’ve moved to the Deep South. Pole - ummm. Okay. Notch?? Like, a notch in a wood? Kailler???? What? Is it supposed to be like Killer, but special dude-like Killer kind of name? Nope. Kailler is a woman. Karin? Is this typical spelling? And Karin’s last name - the one that she’s frequently called - Veith. Essentially all of her people are called the Veith orphans. Veith.

Do we understand why Amanda thought we were reading some kind of Sci-Fy?

Seriously, unique names are awesome, but too many and it’s hard to call a story contemporary unless you put it in a specific setting. The lack of setting is what made me immediately think I was getting something other than what I expected.

All of that aside - I truly LOVED this book! Once I got past all of the weird names, I totally fell for the characters. There was action and a touch of mystery. The entire cast of characters held my interest. And it was so steamy and delicious. A genuine new favorite of mine.

So, don’t let yourself get stuck on the weird names. Rename them in your head if you have to! The actual story is awesome and I highly recommend it to any romance lover! Particularly if you, like me, find short and steamy books to be the catnip that they are.

No strong representation of diverse characters or minority identities.

Overall: 2-stars

Claiming His Queen suffers from a lack of world-building which made me quite confused about the characters' relationships (who were enemies, and why, and what their 'jobs' were). The vague world-building consequently impacted the characterizations of the Heroine and Hero; I didn't believe someone in the Hero's place wouldn't be aware of the huge vulnerability of one of his supposed-enemies, and I didn't believe the child of a would-be mob boss would be that naive. Especially, considering the Heroine's mother's gang was comprised of only women. Claiming His Queen also sets up the Hero's criminal organization and the Heroine's mother's organization as if they're enemies, but it seems like they're more 'I'll stay out of your way if you stay out of mine,' which kind of negates the whole enemies to lovers situation and makes the reason for the Heroine being in the custody of the Hero void.

Also, I find it problematic that the Heroine never acknowledged how dangerous her mother could be – the villain actually raised some important facts. The Heroine's mother brought vulnerable girls off the street, kept them safe but, in return, she wanted their absolute loyalty and help to grow her organization. As a result, her mother made "her girls" sleep with some bad/scary men to get information. It's one thing if the girls are choosing to do it but it didn't seem like they had one choice. I needed there to be an actual discussion because it came across as exploitive.

Aidon and Cora

I don’t know....this book is a bit of a departure. I did not find Aidon very likable and the story is a bit edgy. The writing is still great. HEA.

Not my favorite Ella Goode read, but still an enjoyable and fairly light organized crime erotic romance.

It can be difficult to world build in short stories and novellas, and I spent a bit of this one trying to figure out exactly what was going on, and how each character was connected to another. Sorting out what Cora's mother's business actually was took a bit, until I settled on . Once I sorted everything out, it was fine.

I'm not entirely sure some of the plot points/reveals were necessary. The unasked/never requested question of Cora's father gets answered—exactly who I was expecting—but nothing happened with it. Not even some back story that could have been interesting. It was just filler. Same with the antagonist's plot. His accomplice gave more information than he did, and that was still barely surface level scratching. The motivation was weak and aimless. Both of these characters were super flat, and it's always a shame when a villain is done dirty like that. This is a consistent issue I've had with Goode's writing; she seems to struggle with it.

But. It's not a bad read by any means. It was an enjoyable way to pass 90 minutes.

I read the book after this before I read this book and everyone said this one was better than that one. But I felt like they were similar.

This is set in the crime world where two bosses are trying to get to the bottom of a death.

Karin Vieth the crime boss with a syndicate made up of mostly women offers up her own daughter to Aidon, as she tries to find out what happened to his man while he was in her territory.

Aidon falls in love with her daughter basics just by looking at her. This is the part of the story I wish the author would put more effort into.

Cora, is sweet but also childlike at times, which I found a little weird.

But overall, it was an enjoyable read. I knew going into it that it was a quick read so I would have to suspend my disbelief to enjoy it.

Deadly attraction

Instant attraction can be deadly, but when Cora steps into his world that’s the last thing our lead is thinking. Seven days and he can’t touch her or taste her.

But that won’t stop Aidon from figuring out a way around it that’ll leave both satisfied.

A different read from Ella Goode, but one that I enjoyed. She always brings the heat!

It’s a yes from me.

Not gonna lie I wasn’t sure in the first couple chapters because we have a lot of names/info thrown at us (trying the lay the ground work for the story quickly) and the hero was a bit too “just need to get her out of my system” vibes in the beginning but I wasn’t too put off because 1) she’s the only one he’s felt this way 2) it makes sense with the plot 3) When he falls oh boy does he so I forgave it lol

I liked the heroine the best in this book cause she was such a good mix of brave and scared, shy and sassy, innocent and sensual. It took some time to flesh out the characters, especially the hero, but it was worth the wait. The side characters were really good additions.

Also, really enjoyed the plot like it wasn’t just pure romance (but it’s definitely the focus) but a fun story. So gonna reread this one, it was just so fun!

Best of all it’s dual virgin and he publicly announces it in a funny scene.

The couple: Aidon and Cora

Romance genre: Insta-love/arranged marriage
Length: 108 pages

Plot: Cora's mother, Karin, is the Vieth leader, and when one of his men is killed in her territory, Aidon holds her responsible. As a show of good faith (kinda), she leaves her daughter, Cora, with him. But Aidon decides that he would like to keep Cora, and he's going to make Cora want the same thing.

Character development: I was a bit confused about where/when this was taking place, and I think that due to a lack of world-building. I feel like this problem also carried over to the next related book (Stealing His Princess) as well. I would have also liked a little more conversation about Cora's dad, seeing as it was . Seems like Karin would have given them a little more information. But it was entertaining nonetheless.

Exciting smut romance! It has all the naughty delight of a virginal offering to a bad man with the gritty world of a mafia background. Yet it's also adorably sweet and fun. And it's all thanks to the female character who is innocent, bold, candid and brave.

What I found really funny is that she's supposed to be this seductress with an agenda, but it's out in the open from the start that she has no clue. Still, she manages to get this hardened lord of crime to move heaven and earth to have her, keep her, and save the day among criminal organizations in the brink of war. The interactions are full of laughs and heat. She's naïve in her behaviour towards this big intimidating boss, but she's also curious and a little bratty. I loved her connection with the female bodyguard. That was hilarious.

Another thing I enjoyed is the little suspense going on surrounding a mysterious situation with a member of his organisation, and all the confrontations with his enemies are worthwhile and cunning and boast good action too. It is fun till the last moment with a furious retaliation and an epilogue full of dark sweetness. Loved it!

You have to piece a lot of things together yourself, especially at the beginning, but it’s a pretty good story.
It involves a trope I enjoy, along with some OTT possessiveness, and double virgins.
It was interesting and engaging. A lot is implied instead of explicitly said which is fine but a little disorienting at times.
The sex was ok. Steamy but kind of short.
I don’t know. I felt rushed, and the ending doesn’t help that feeling. The ending felt abrupt and I wish there had a been just a couple pages more to really wrap thing up a bit smoother.
Good story, not executed as well as I’d have liked.

I am hook, line, and sinker for a quick mafia romance.

This one ticked all my boxes to be honest; there was drama, steam, and some funny moments too that had me laughing out loud.
Love how these two characters come together to form a relationship - even if it was in different circumstances. Would high recommend for someone who is looking for a short read before bed and has a mafia story in mind.

Aidon has made a name for himself and his region. He's a boss who doesn't take crap from anyone. He lives by his own rules. One that everyone knows is that if you take from him, he'll take from you. When one of his men is killed and a Vieth orphan seems to be the reason, he'll stop at nothing to exact revenge. What Aidon didn't see was Karen offering him his downfall in one curvy gorgeous package.

Having the head of a crime syndicate as a mother has made life a bit for Cora a bit sheltered. She's been surrounded by the women her mother employees and has had her existence kept a secret from the world. When her mother assigns her a mission she sees this as her chance to prove to her mother she can be as deadly and dangerous as the women she employees. What was suppose to be a mission of seductions turns into a love Cora didn't believe she'd ever experience.

I really liked Ella Goode's take on a mafia romance. I will say the ending once they "catch" the traitor I did get a bit squeamish with some of the things done, but beyond that this was a good read!

I'm not sure...

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this. It was like some kind of dystopian mafia? 3 sides. One seemed insignificant, one seemed more in charge and one was a mafia of prostitutes?? A group of prostitutes led by a madame who raised her own daughter to also be used for that? I mean, they were assassin's too, so... go girl power?😑 it took me a week just to get to 31% and I kept thinking of just stopping for good. I've never had that happen with an Ella Goode book before... I did finally continue it and it does get better close to 50%... then I didn't have a problem finishing it, and it did get a lot better. I can't see ever re-reading it as I have many other Ella Goode stories, it's definitely not my preference. That being said, I did enjoy the H & h once they fell in love. It was a pleasant surprise to find out he was also a V. I liked how the h befriended Kaiiler. It seemed like it was a hea.

Aidon is the king of territory, so when one of his men turns up dead, execution-style, he is out for revenge. All fingers point to Karen Vieth and her group of “orphans” but when Karen shows up at his door offering incentive to allow her the time to find out who killed one of his men, he is thrown for a loop. The incentive is in the form of her daughter, Cora,…a daughter that no one knew about. But he will not be pulled in by one of her tricks. No matter how tempting Cora is. No matter how much he craves her.

You guys...to say I loved this one, is an understatement! Ella Goode is such an amazing author and she continues to impress me with her over the top alphas and wonderful worlds she creates. I really hope that she is going to continue this world!

This one is a little heavier than what I would consider “Mafia-lite” but is no where near dark! Seriously give it a look!

If you are in the mood for a Mafia romance with a in ruthless man I’m charge that falls for a sweet and sassy woman out of the blue, I’d say that Claiming His Queen in the book for you! There is some mystery throughout the book that was very entertaining because we don’t really know if Cora and her Mom are telling the truth about one of Aidon’s men. The pieces of the puzzle came together beautifully and when we see what was really happening and who betrayed them it only serves to make the characters come together as a United front even more.

The characters were great, Cora and her relationship with Kailler over the books they were reading was hilarious, and Aidon was such a bear but a sweet and demanding one when it came to Cora and her safety. Mafia romance can be hit and miss, but Claiming His Queen was an amazing read and I hope we get more from this book world in the future.

What'd I just read?

Whoa.
This was unexpected. Ms. Goode is an amazing author. I one-click everything since discovering her a couple years ago.
But this? Whoa. Wow.
It skirts the border between dark and sweet, venturing into both when necessary but never fully. I enjoyed the violence the characters were capable of; that Ms. Goode could write them was incredible to see in black and white.
Aidon and Cora were true to their natures and their opposing characteristics complimented the other's well. Dark to light. Hard to soft. Bada** to sweet. Make no mistake though: Cora's no wilting flower. She's strong and defiant when itA matters.
A well-written, character and plot driven story that was unexpected and thoroughly enjoyed. I hope to see more from this world.

Debated on stars

This was oddly a book that kept me reading & not in a bad way. It is a very calm read that had a nice flow to it. The names of people are weird and takes a bit getting used to. Some of Ella's books are a hit or miss kind of thing. It is your standard 'good faith' bargaining chip situation but somewhere along the way it really makes sense. No severe drama and the intimate scene is not a crude, just thrown in there, to fill a book thing. This has a beginning, middle and an end so to speak.
