This was a pretty easy read despite it being heavier on the politics, which I really enjoyed. There's just something so fun about court politics and schemes and war strategies. And despite the rough start Teng Yun (MC) had with Xue Junliang (ML), the slow burn was really worth it, the angst was also quite minimal but the things TY and XJL had to go through and overcome in order to have their happy ending made their relationship all the sweeter.
TY truly was meant to be the Ugly Empress of Emperor Xue, whether he was in the body of a woman or a man, Emperor Xue could recognise him and in all his lives after his first as the original Teng Yun, XJL only had ever loved him. However, because the focus of the majority of the novel was on politics, I sometimes felt as if TY wasn't a significant character, or more specifically, it was as if the author didn't really care about TY as a character until the 2nd half of the novel where he had entered Teng Ying's body and became a man again. But then again, it was probably because while TY was the Empress Feng Yun (yep the Yun in TY and FY's names was the same), naturally as a woman, he wasn't allowed to join any battles and could only advise Emperor Xue on war tactics and strategies. The way the Empress died in the fire was so cheap though, I didn't understand how TY couldn't escape and why he felt so weak at the time the fire broke out.
But anyway, I thought XJL was a good emperor and the reason why he killed TY initially was understandable. TY was the iron general of an enemy country and had been a thorn in his side, but XJL later admitted to himself that he had never hated TY and instead had always admired him. And when he found out that TY had always been by his side, he started to treat TY better than before, better than when TY was the Empress, because he had finally realised what a special person TY was and how grateful he was to have him. I really liked XJL's character development and it was cute how TY got really flustered when XJL started treating him good as he was always thinking that the Emperor was out to get his head. TY too changed, but I didn't think it was as apparent as XJL's because I got to read more about what XJL thought and felt about TY instead of the reverse, as TY was kind of clueless when it came to his feelings. And although everyone could see how much XJL cared for and doted on him, TY was still reluctant and tried to distance himself, until XJL eventually managed to soften him and win his heart.
The side characters were memorable to me, especially Zhao Lu and Feng Ming because their relationship was probably the most complicated and the one that actually led to heartbreak. Compared to TY and XJL's relationship that seemed almost inevitable, fate had conspired against ZL and FM. But even so, they had genuine feelings for each other and I'm so glad that they got the happy ending they deserved too. It would've been heartbreaking if FM was left with absolutely nothing after losing everything. There was a lot of humour in this novel too, mostly supplied by Xue Houyang (XJL's brother and a total sweetheart who was loyal to his husband Teng Shang, who was TY's uncle) and Jiang Yu (XJL's trusted eunuch).
I'm not gonna lie, I found it kind of funny that the author made all the significant side characters gay in the end. ZL and FM ending up together was a given, honestly, so I was glad that they reunited and reconciled. Xue Yu (another one of XJL's relative) ended up with his trusted loyal advisor, Lang Jing, and Xue Pei (XJL's son and the Crown Prince) grew up and had feelings for his High Mentor Shen Yi who was 10 years older than him (don't worry, they only got together when XP was 20 and the new Xue Emperor; this is for you shizun-fuckers I guess LMAO). The author managed to include a lot of common tropes in this novel but they had fun with it so as a reader, I didn't feel burdened to read about it.

Super fun gender bender historical transmigration danmei. General Teng Yun is caught by the enemy Xue country and executed by Emperor Xue. He then comes back to life in the body of Xue country’s ugly empress (so-called after her face was intentionally disfigured). The story has a slow burn enemies to lovers romance, harem drama, lots of political intrigue, and war scenes.
This was my first time reading a gender bender and I found that aspect highly relatable as a trans reader, Teng Yun even experienced gender dysphoria when his body would menstruate. It doesn’t stay a gender bender the whole time, he does regain a male body partway through. I loved the hidden identity aspect of the story and Xue Junliang was a shameless flirt, it was really fun to watch him catch feelings and get frustrated by Teng Yun’s lack of romantic interest. They end up becoming a really supportive power couple and I loved how they slowly came to trust and respect each other. It’s not a perfect book, there were 5 side couples which is excessive (is every man in this world Achillean?) and the book intentionally draws certain things out like having the characters interrupted each time there was about to be some real relationship development or piling on angst because Teng Yun didn’t want to reveal his identity. Luckily I’m a slut for slow burns and didn’t mind the very contrived way the story was stringing things out
CWs: body shaming, misogyny, bullying, classism, incest (not between the MCs), slavery, sexual harassment, rape, main character death, war, torture, homophobia
The first half has been quite disappointing. The MC is so boring that all the subplots and side characters are more interesting than him. I had high expectations in this story because of the synopsis, however, the MC is such a passive character that he hardly speaks. And I was expecting chaos!!!!! Intrigues!!!!! And the ML's interest in him is quite absurd: one day his empress catches his eye and he becomes obsessed with winning her over when he discovers that she is the only one of her wives who doesn't love him.
Although I was about to drop this novel several times, there is an unexpected plot twist in the second part... so I kept reading.
At the end, I liked the complicated and twisted relationship between the two protagonists, but especially the stories of the secondary characters like Teng Shang. The parts of the war seemed like summaries more than chapters, but the dialogues between characters are quite good. Especially when the emperor tries to find out the truth about Teng Yun.
I really enjoyed the politics of this one and I love plotty people being plotty, even when they're in love, but this one did get a bit hard to read after they switched translators. Not bad enough that I stopped but it lacked a certain bit of cohesiveness that the first volume had.
May go back and re-read the second volume since the original translator's working on it again.
The plot was good and characters were fine too, at some points it was even instructive. I like it that The auther has the talent to take us back in time and show us what waging a war, scheming and plotting in political world would be like -at least in a fantasy World-. However I'm not really satisfied with the relationship between The Emperor and The General, this novel is categorized as BL and Gender-bender therefore I was expecting more intimacy, not to mention I wasn't satisfied with how Teng Yun went along with flow without too much struggles and decided to submit to the new king either! I mean for God's sake he's the God of war and legendary general! Shouldn't he be more hostile and bold?! But still I give this novel 4 stars and of course I believe it was worth the time.

Err, actually this could be 4 but DAMN BRO. THE WHOLE FAM IS GAY ASFFFFFF.
i mean, i would be alright if the empress stay as female, yeah? But then she died. Aight, ok fine.
But then in the extra, even the crown prince is gayyyyy like wtffffff?
Also, gotta admit i skimmed and skipped some part because it got so boring/doesn't make sense/ML and MC powerful/whatever
Ahhhhh also also alsooo! ML is soooo unreadable (is that the word?) One sec he was like that and the next second he was like this. He did feel human tho.
I've been craving this trope for a while, it's genderbending from male to female and then back to the original. The MC doesn't occupy the original body again, but he transmigrates multiple times, and the ML falls in love first, but is not a crazy yandere, neglecting his empire just for his love, which makes it more realistic.
Would have like to see more sex scenes when MC when he was in the body of the empress, but author didn't go that way.
It was true love because the ML loved MC when he was the empress and when he was her "killer" which makes it so much more exciting.
Amazing story of reincarnation! When a prisoner of war is executed by an emperor he has battled many times, he wakes up in the body of that same emperor's empress. The emperor did not spend any time with this empress until he found out "she" was very knowledgeable about war strategy and had intrigued the serious little crown prince. It doesn't say why the empress had so many injuries on her face but the emperor has them healed and becomes infatuated with her in the meantime. Because of their relationship, he becomes a better emperor and a better man.
10/09/2023 Dropped at chapter 41. It wasn't bad but I don't care enough about the plot or the characters to keep reading especially since the translation isn't complete yet.
I really liked this book. The low rating is because the plot was to shallow. If I were to rate the characters, it'll be 4.50 (half is remover because I can't believe every single character is gay...) But the plot was "huh?". The truth is, there wasn't much of a plot so, this book ended up being rather dull... Things happened and the characters reacted to them. Also, a lot of the developments were whimsical. Like: How many wars can a country win just by spreading rumours? And in a land with no phones, the news and more importantly, rumours! travel faster than the light. Anyway... I won't nitpick too much. It was a fun read not mind-blowing. The characters were lovely, specially Teng Yun and an honorable mention to cinnamon roll Xue Houyang.
