Belated justice can be most satisfying. For almost ten years, Nikki Drake struggled to deal with her sister's mysterious disappearance. When another teen vanishes from the same riding stable, the details are too eerily similar to ignore, and she vows to uncover the truth. No longer a child but a newly minted private investigator, she now has additional weapons in her arsenal, including a re-homed police dog and an enigmatic detective with ties to the horse stable. However, digging into her sister's case erodes old trusts and brings dark secrets bubbling to the surface. And this time they could be fatal...for her.
REPENT (#2) Sometimes the isolated countryside isn't as peaceful as it first appears... Local police aren't very concerned when fourteen-year-old Billy Tanner doesn't show up for his community service at their stable. Tossing a firebomb at a police horse isn't something they can easily forgive. Yet when the boy's frantic grandmother begs PI Nikki Drake to hunt for her missing grandson, it's a call for help Nikki can't ignore. Her search takes her to the backwoods of California where a serial killer is pursuing his own brand of vigilante justice.

I really enjoyed both of these books. Grave Instincts sets up the story of Nikki's past and the people in her life. It develops her character and what drives her to her work. It shows us how she met Justin at a horse farm and how she came to love animals. Justin gave her Gunner, a "rejected" police dog he rescued. She became a PI and has hunted for her sister for years. She reconnects with Justin and their relationship develops.
Repent is another story with animal connections. A boy working for the police horse unit goes missing. But the police don't care because he came to them to do community service for hurting a horse. His grandmother is adamant he wouldn't just run off and not fulfill his commitment. So she hires Nikki to hunt for him. Her relationship with Justin is growing and he helps her as she also helps him. Nikki has her suspicions about the police unit but picks up the slim threads to solve a truly frightening case.
These 2 books were as advertised. Riveting and fast paced. I found it very hard to put the book down. I lost sleep reading into the night and finished them in 3 days. Full characters with believable story lines. Tension mixed with some humor. In the 1st book the killer was unexpected and I did not figure out who it was by the 3rd chapter as I often do. In the 2nd book you learn who the killer is before the end but you don't care you just want to find out if the good guys make in the finish
A bad teen story turns into a really cool investigation. It was a little tough getting through the first few chapters of , oh this again. Then a few twist and then another turn and then I hope they make it in time. The writing is good; the premise is excellent; the reaction of one character to another is amazing. The ending is like watching the Calvary come to the rescue and the least of the characters become the hero of the day. If this was in the movies, the crowd would be cheating at the end. Well done!
I thoroughly enjoyed these two books! Learned a great deal about Search & Rescue dogs, their training & care! I liked Justin the first time he was introduced in book #1! So glad these characters carried through the two books! So many times characters are introduced... and theirs nothing else! I could continue to read more stories involving the two lead characters! That’s the way an excellent storyteller hooks their readers! And, I was hooked!
Really enjoyed reading these two books. As the owner of both horses and GSDs, what a pleasure to have them both in these books. Nikki kicks ass as a PI that goes the extra mile to get results. When her sister disappears 12 years ago, she never stops searching for her. Glad she finally gets closure and gets together with Luke. I hope the author continues with this series!
I like Nikki and Justin and Gunner and the way the story played out. Book #1 was a very interesting Mystery involving both MCs. Book 2 continues Nikki's PI investigations with Justin still around and partially involved and Gunner sidelined this time from a injury.
Two good stories. I just had to keep on reading till I finished the book. I have other books by Bev. I will now start the next two book set I bought in the series. I referred this book to my cousin and found out she already knew about and had read some of Bev's books. I highly recommend.
I love the K9 series of books by various authors. This set popped up and I'm glad it did. Writing is great, tense, fun at times, interesting characters with depth. Hope to find more like these soon. Nikki and Gunner are a great investigators and loyal to each other. Typical k9 bond
K-9 Mystery Series? How can you go wrong? This was a very entertaining series with plenty of action, both human and with the animal kingdom. It was fast paced and kept me glued to the kindle. The characters were very life like and drew the reader into the stories. It was well written and had a good editing job. I highly recommend this series.
Really enjoyed these books. The Author has a nice flowing writing style. The plots are well thought out and keep you reading to the end. I bought these as they were K-9 stories. I loved Gunner and hope the author will write more of this series.
I had just finished reading a book, and this book came up on book hub so I decided I would get it because it sounded interesting. Both books held my attention, and I didn’t want to put my Kindle down until the end. It’s definitely worth picking up and reading.
Well written and full of suspense. You find yourself second guessing who has done what throughout. It is something an animal lover will understand as the relationship with animals is seen from some very different human perspectives.
I love K9 stories. This one is especially good. The people are real , the dogs terrific. She didn't go into too much detail- just enough to let the reader be part of the story. I'm happy to recommend this as a good book.
I was totally riveted by this unbelievable story. I respect Nikki Drake as a PI. And Justin is just about perfect as her guy. I predict more stories will be coming involving people who love animals!
The first book in the series was very predictable and I found myself skipping to the end because I knew what I would find. The 2nd book was much better and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Looking forward to a 3rd where I hope jack becomes a part of the storyline.
Two solid stories, with unique characters and solid pacing and character development. The first introduces us to a private investigator who solves her sisters murder and the second follows a serial killer and his intended victims.
What a wonderful mystery series. Extremely fast paced, edge of the seat type of novel . I really enjoyed the characters and the details of K9s and horses throughout the books. Great job!
Fast paced, great characters, drama, mystery, a little romance mixed in. And a nice side of humor, who could ask for more? I sure hope there will be more books in this series.
An excellent read, although I would've preferred Gunner to play a greater part in the second book. I read dog books for the dog, but that's just me. :)
Book one was a book I enjoyed. I love canine characters. Book two was a disappointment! It was a tease and I read it only because I liked the first dog/person interaction. So book two was a lie! No dog! Boooooo
This book was even better than her fist. I love the characters and wish she would write another and include the brothers, Jack and Billy and Grandmom and Sparkey.
Book one and two were terrific, an excellent understanding of animals, great characters. I’d definitely recommend this book, probably teens to seniors.
