Mafia Wars #2

Broken Fighter

Rate this book
He’s my brother’s best friend, a Russian killer, and boxer with no ties to the O’Malley crime family—my family.

I’ve loved and studied him forever. I witnessed him change when I was only thirteen. He doesn’t know I’m aware he kills, or how I notice once a year he gets a call and disappears.
For years we fight our attraction. One night, we succumb to our desire.
Every touch he gives me is electric. Each moment deepens our addiction.
If it were only us, life would be perfect.
Unfortunately, our union creates targets on our backs from multiple crime families. It puts our loved ones at greater risk. Wars from each of our enemies now plague the O’Malleys and Ivanovs.
Every time the annual call comes to pay off his debt, he crumbles further. I’m not sure how much more either of us can take.
He’s my broken fighter...

”Broken Fighter” is the jaw-dropping second installment of the “Mafia Wars” series. It’s an interconnecting, brother’s best friend, stand-alone Dark Mafia Romance, guaranteed to have an HEA.

I was in the mood for something dark and consuming and this story delivered on all fronts and perfectly catered to my mood.

I was completely invested in the characters, their struggles, their romance (I swooned!), the plot! The plot! So well done with so many high stakes. It was gritty and gruesome and just lovely to read and I love the way it ended. It left room for so much growth. And I’m finding myself getting attached to a lot of the characters involved in this mafia world.

This world is about to get bigger and better and I can’t wait to continue on with it.

"And no matter what you do, Boris Ivanov, I see you. The real you."
-- Nora O'Malley

From early on, it's clear that Nora has Boris' number. Even knowing what she does, it doesn't stop the heartbreak, the heartache that they put each other and themselves through. It's palpable.

The chemistry between these two would put an ACME factory explosion to shame! Their passion is intense, wild, and all-consuming. Unsurprisingly, this leads to some extremely 🔥 HOT 🔥 encounters.

In addition to the insane steam these two generate, I also loved their tenacity, even when misplaced, loyalty, and support for each other. I really liked how this story was woven around Maksim & Aspen's and Dmitri & Anna's stories, while at the same time creating a story that is Boris & Nora's, but in a way that you could get away with not having read those books yet. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Ya'll this book... THIS BOOK!

This couple was tearing my heart out.

Nora and Boris have been around each other forever. Her brother is best friend's with Boris and she has wanted him from afar for so long. He wants her too, but there is a big problem. She is an Irish O'Malley, and he is a Russian Ivanoff, and while their families may tolerate each other, she could never marry someone who isn't Irish. So he loves her from a distance, but she is never far from his mind.

Something I really loved about how this story was told is that it really spanned some time. If you read the first installment of this book, you already know a few things about this couple's relationship. You know about the tension and where they are at with everything. (We also get to see Maxsim from the last book both pre-Aspen and post Aspen and its awesome.) So it was interesting to go back a few years and see what led them to that place.

Though the merry-go-round of "will they, won't they" went around one too many times for me... I understood why they would be afraid to possibly ruin some relationships. There is a lot on the line when their families are so sure about them NOT being together, but man... it made for some HOT sneaking around scenes. I mean, that's what we want in our forbidden romances right?

This book does also progress the Maifa Wars plot as a whole, but again, it doesn't go too much into the future past where the first one does. So we are definitely still in uncertain waters.

Also, did I mention this is hot as fuck? Well, yes, yes it is.

5/5 stars from me. And I connot WAIT for the next book, we got a bit of a sneak at that couple and I want more.

Audiobook review. I enjoyed this one more than the first. There was such an intensity to Boris and Nora’s relationship that really held up throughout the entire story. I enjoyed the family dynamics and how their internal and external conflicts kept me at the edge of my seat.

The plot was extremely interesting with characterization that definitely went beyond the surface and not just for the main characters but secondary as well.

This is the first book I’ve heard from Allyson Voller but not my first from Gregory Salinas. Both did a fantastic job with their tone, pitch, and pace consistency. Will definitely be on the lookout for more of their titles.

Complementary copy received and voluntarily reviewed.

The buzz of my skin crackles the moment I see him. I don’t have a choice in the two options. He’s lightning to my veins. And the need for him to strike me over and over has never been greater.

First Impressions
After reading Ruthless Stranger, I had to immediately jump into Broken Fighter, and honestly, I read the sample because I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep going, however, I was weak haha and I immediately grabbed up this one and I was more excited to discover Boris and Nora’s love story and it was everything I could have hoped for and more!! I fell so hard for them. We see this couple in Ruthless Stranger and I was hoping that we would get to see their story here. What we see is a flashback from seeing them from then and we see the growth of their relationship up until the present and I really loved this style of writing a flashback, it wasn’t that ridiculous back and forth ping pong ball type of flashback that literally give you reader dizzies. Nope, this was pure perfection for me and I loved just about everything about this book here. There was something “more” to this book that just worked for me. I do have a soft spot for that forbidden love type of reading and this one checked off all the boxes for me. And plus I just needed to see Boris have his HEA and how he found Nora and all the good and bad in between. And Maggie Cole definitely delivered a beautiful story here!!

Summary
Our story begins with the beginning when our couple first meets. Boris and Nora have known each other for years, Boris is the best friend of her brother Killian. They help each other train and fight in the ring in their fights but also Boris is invested in the O’Malley family, as he considers them his family. There is this connection that has always been between Boris and Nora but they haven’t acted on it but now those feelings are started to become more present. Nora is a member of the O’Malley family, and she is expected to marry a good Irish man and have Irish babies but she is getting into her mid-thirties and her brothers are pressuring her into dating, But there is only one man that Nora wants, and he is the forbidden fruit she isn’t supposed to go near and her family would have a fit if she ever thought about being with someone Russian over being Irish. Boris has loved Nora from afar, he knows he shouldn’t be with her, its too dangerous. He had to make a deal with the devil to save his family and once a year he is owned and he doesn’t know how he could ever keep her safe. His own family doesn’t want him near Nora but he can’t seem to resist being with Nora. But Boris wonders if he will ever be enough for Nora and if she would be willing to give up her Irish family and expectations to be with him?

Between kisses, she says, “We can’t do this anymore.” I kiss her deeper. “You’re wrong.” “We’re playing with fire.” My arm tightens around her. I hold her head firmly to mine. “You can’t put out the flame when the match is already lit.” She freezes. “Then everything burns to the ground.”

What I Loved
Oh man,..my heart while reading this book was utterly captivated by this pairing and I just savored every single page with Boris and Nora. I absolutely adored seeing their story unfold and all the pain and heartbreak that they have to go through. I just wanted to give them a warm hug, just seeing how much they love each other but are torn from their own families’ expectations was so heartbreaking at times. Boris especially is going through hell trying to figure out this relationship with Nora. He also is tormented by his present and his past, I just loved how his brothers and friends understand even if they don’t know everything, and give him the support that he so needs. The romance between Boris and Nora was just everything, there is something about a forbidden love that will always work out for me. The way that is was written though, was magnificent. I was on board all the way with these two, their story is painful at times because of what they have to overcome but I really admired the way in which they are able to get through it and overcome what they face. It was also very interesting to see how Boris defeats his enemy, and it was so satisfying to see it here. I found the O’Malley family to be such a hoot and I can’t wait to see more of their antics.

What I Struggled With
Not that much, sometimes Nora drove me nuts by delaying telling her family the truth.

Overall View
I found Broken Fighter to be such a fierce and sensual romance that beats a heart of fire and is packed with so much heart and genuine feels. Definitely eager to see what Maggie delivers in the series!

“You’re mine, moya dusha. I love you. No amount of potential destruction is keeping me away from you.”

This series is just stunning.
The book is disturbing, cruel in places and at other times it takes your breath away with the love and passion these characters all have for one another, but with all this, it’s an attention catching read.
Baton down the hatches, Boris and Nora are going to set the pages alight.

Nora, the heroine, was an absolute bitch in the first book. In this one she was even worse. She was on some crazy hypocrite shit. Like girl please look at yourself and what you've been doing all these years before you start judging every other girl you meet. She's out here judging girls she's just met for having doubts about getting into relationships with dangerous men they barely know, when it took her YEARS to own up to her feelings about Boris. Surprise surprise it actually takes for her to finally accept they should come clean to their families.

The mafia plot is better than in the first one though, and I'm interested in getting to some of the side characters stories in the future, especially Liam 😏

I loved Boris and Nora's romance! Thus is a brother's best friend, feuding Mafia families romance. It does have a pretty unpopular trope in here but it kind of worked for me. These two had a very sweet romance and I loved reading their story.

This did suffer from a bit of a sloggy middle but other than that it was great.

Okay, hear me out. At first I thought it would be a 4 star read. It’s definitely BETTER THAN THE FIRAT book in the series. Then after pages and pages and pages and pages and pages, you get the point, I can fairly rate it as a 3.75 star read.

It’s too damn long! You get lost in the names, and the strategies. I’m like god damn, just kill the man already. While I can appreciate the art of strategy, the author has to learn to do it in fewer words and fewer characters. It was everybody and their damn cousin in every scene!

Everything is discussed in detail until it felt drawn the hell out. It dragged and dragged the fun out of it. I was liking what’s his face (can’t remember his name b/c so many damn names) in the beginning. Then at the middle I wanted him to put up or shut up.

The sex scenes are boring. Don’t expect to feel any heat from them. If you do, I won’t judge you...to your face. A dictionary’s definition on sex is more exciting than reading those scenes.

As for Nora’s ass.... why in all holy damn would ANYONE think it’s sexy to scream out “Jesus, Mary and Joseph” repeatedly while having sex. Like that’s unsexy as fudge. It’s not cute, quirky or endearing.

It’s stupid and stupid to read. I understand if your getting dckd down so good you keep calling for the lord, his mamma and daddy a couple of time. However, the amount of time she said it was a major turn off, in addition to the wack ass sex scenes (it’s now considered wack ass because of her screaming that bull).

I think I’m going to skip everyone and go to Liam. I can’t read anymore. The author has a lot of potential but whoever the hell told her to make it into Lord of the Rings trilogy in one book steered her wrong. Just a bit shorter and she’s hit the sweet spot.

Make no mistakes about it through, the author can write! The talent it takes to world build to this extent is amazing. I think (if she hasn’t already) try to write paranormal books. Her talent would really shine.

I’ll find a gem of hers, I’m sure of it!

4 1/2 stars

The relationship between Boris and Nora was a slow burn, but when that match was lit, the fire was HAWT. There were many reasons Boris and Nora seemed to come up with why they shouldn't be together. He was her brother's best friend. She was Irish and he was Russian. Her family's mob connections. His link to Zamir. Ultimately they had to decide if all those things were worth giving up the love of your life. We had met this couple in the early books about his family so some of this storyline was known. I really liked seeing how some of these scenes were viewed in these other points of view. This author has an amazing way of weaving her story throughout the series so you are always seeing these new layers. The only critique I can give is that I was getting a bit annoyed at Nora for constantly trying to push Boris away or hide the relationship. Once she found her backbone I loved it. Very good glimpse into the next book as well.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’m not really sure why the first book all the couples were together and then this book was a couple that was already together in the first books storyline but I still enjoyed it. I liked seeing how they got together and why things are the way they are. The ending was a little meh but still not bad.

The repeated ‘Jesus, Mary, and Joseph’ during spicy scenes was annoying though lol.

I read the whole Behind Closed Doors series, and one of the things I didn't like about it is the same with this series: I'd like the characters better if they were younger. For late 30s and 40-somethings, they seem immature. It's a lot of drama for grown-ass adults. I made it to chapter 13 (37%). Did not finish.

4 Stars - Mafia Romance

I was excited to dive into the second book in the Mafia Wars series. I always love a fighter romance and was excited to see what Maggie Cole would do with it! I also love that this had two characters from different families. One is Irish and one is Russian.

This book does have surprise baby which isn't my favorite so know that going into this book.

After listening to Ruthless Stranger I was hooked on the Mafia Wars series. I had such high hopes for Broken Fighter, and I have to say that I was hooked right from the start.

Nora and Boris have an intense chemistry and draw to each other but her Irish mob brothers are determined that she should be married to an Irish man and continue the Irish bloodline.

The story is very high action and intense. While there is some seriously steamy loving and fiery romantic scenes, this is a story of the Irish and Russian Mafia (among others) so be prepared for some gory and sometimes gruesome scenes.

Maggie Cole's writing is complex, exciting and Broken Fighter's intricate plot is a testament to just what a huge talent she is. The story is like a mixed tapestry of love, steam, action, family, and darkness. It is a fantastic blend that works incredibly well.

Gregory Salinas and Allyson Voller deliver an edge of the seat, intense performance. The acted each scene to perfection. Whether the scene is steamy, intense, emotional or violent, they had me transfixed.

"Once a storm begins, there's no escaping it. All you can do is hide from it or embrace it. The buzz of my skin crackles the moment I see him. I don't have a choice in the two options. He's lightning to my veins. And the need for him to strike me over and over has never been greater."

Quotes like this are one of the reasons I love reading Maggie Cole's books!! Boris and Nora have a love story that began when they were young but family dynamics have kept them from coming together. A war is brewing and loving each other complicates things but they are drawn to each other and resisting is not easy! Boris Ivanov is so strong even though he is tormented by the devil....and Nora is part of the O'Malley crime family and trying to keep her and her brothers from being part of that business. This story has me on the edge waiting for the next twist. If you have not picked up Mafia Wars yet then do so immediately.....it is hot and dark and soooo much more!!! (Note this is book 2 of the series)

This is the second installment of the Mafia Wars series. Boris has always loved Nora. Nora has always loved Boris. The only keeping them apart is good old fashioned Irish guilt plus if Nora's brother ever found out he would probably kill his best friend. Boris also has a debt that needs to be paid once a year. Can their love for one another survive every obstacle thrown in their way? Will they be able to finally be together? Boris and Nora have so much chemistry it ignites the pages. There is so much action I felt like I was in a movie and didn't want it to end. I can't wait for the next installment.

Uggggg..this series is killing me. I get so enthralled and then BOOM, books done and I'm not ready.

Broken Fighter is book 2 in the new Mafia Wars series. Book 1 ended with a shock and a "well what now?". Since this is book 2, my review will assume the reader has at least read book 1; without giving book 2 spoilers.

Book 2 backtracks to give history to the main couple, Boris and Nora. We've seen them and their interactions in the previous book as well as book 6 of It's Complicated. But this is THEIR story and I enjoyed learning about them individually and how they got together.

Boris holds more responsibility on his shoulders due to his deal with Zamir which means he feels he has more to lose if things go sideways.
Nora is fiesty to her brothers but a calming balm to Boris's tortured soul. They have to fight for each other and everyone else who thinks they should be apart.

I liked Boris's character, and like all his brothers, his drive and experience lit up the pages, steaming and smoldering and oh so yummy.

In addition to the heat and steam, this story's plot was gripping and held me from page one, losing myself to it and finishing it way to quickly. And now I have to wait, because yet again it's a "well what now?" ending.

Wow this book is non-stop action from beginning to end, you will be on the edge of your seat. I have listened to other books narrated by Gregory before however this one really did stand out as one of my favourites. With a fantastic voice that carries the personalities of the dark alpha mafia men it is a winning combination for me.

This is the second book in the Mafia Wars series, and it follows Boris and Nora.
I don’t even know where to begin with this story. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will definitely make you need a cold glass of water. The way Maggie Cole tells a story, that has you so, invested in the characters lives, and what goes on.. amazing. You are instantly drawn into this story and you don’t want to put it down. Boris and his brothers have been through so much, and are fiercely protective of those they love. Nora and Boris fight their feelings for years. Because he’s her brothers best friend. And he feels she deserves someone that won’t put her at risk. But once they give in, there’s no going back. They belong to each other. Just when you think Maggie’s books can’t get any better, she releases a new one. Definitely recommend you read this. One amazing, fast read.

Boris and Nora, let me just say...the chemistry they share, whew...I can't even, it will just makes you wish you had what these two share. If you haven't gotten by the name of this series, there IS a war on the horizon and I can't wait to see how it all ends.

Broken Fighter is book 2 in the Mafia War Series and should be read in order. If you haven't read Ruthless Stranger Maksim and Aspen's story, you have time to catch up.

What can I say! Wow, the suspense is off the chain! Boris and Nora (moya dusha) come from two different families. Russians and Irish. They are supposed to marry their own kind. They have always felt an attraction but never acted on it. When they finally do, wait to you see what happens next. Once a year Boris has no choice but to give into Zamir . What he has to do is awful. He comes back and basically has to stay away from everyone including Nora. Will Nora be able to deal with this? Can both families come together and destroy the ones they need to end the bad things happening? Nora wants to be with Boris and Boris wants to be with Nora but at what costs. All Boris wants to do is keep his loved ones safe from any harm. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. You will never see what is coming next!

Boris is the brother I wanted to know the most and he is here. He did not disappoint!! I love his relationship to Nora. They are friends to lovers then changed into Romeo & Juliet. Instead of Shakespeare style its MAFIA STYLE. Nora is a fire cracker just like her red locks and she a perfect match for Boris. Boris is the alpha and the talented killer out of the brothers and the villian Zamir favoured the most. Hence why he choice Boris to still work for him once a year.

no spoilers why its once a year and what is Zamir history with the brothers...

THE ENDING !! I generally thought they were going to have a happy ending for the brothers. Of course the devil is never far away from the brothers

I can not wait for Liam's story!! I fell I love with him straight away especially how he jokes with ladies to make they feel better AND he admits himself that he has changed since prison

🎧 Audiobook Review
Gregory & Allyson two different narrators from Ruthless Stranger. Gregory didn't do the same hint Russian accent as Zachary did BUT it's still a brillaint listen. Allyson is how I imagine Nora would sound like that minus the Irish accent. It's still a brillaint listen and the acting of the voice are spot on !! especially them moments when Liam comes out of prison and you cam feels how vulnerable Liam is and Nora's affection towars him. Acting is brillaint minus the accents which is not a big lost cause Gregory & Allyson did a brilliant job

“There’s no thinking or stopping. It’s only Boris and me and all the years of denying each other our bodies”.

It’s a forbidden love story between Boris Ivanov and Nora O’Mally. He’s been best friends with her brother since they were kids, but always off limits. He’s Russian and working just outside the mafia and she’s an Irish mafia princess. They’ve always wanted each other, even though it isn’t meant to be. She sees who he truly is: a fighter, muscle… and accepts him and wants him anyway. Nora is the girl he always desired, beautiful inside and out.

Broken Fighter is a great second book in the series. The books seem to be running concurrently, all from different couple’s perspectives. It could be read as a standalone, but best read in order. I’m really enjoying this series. It’s super fast paced and the chemistry between Nora and Boris is off the chain. These are lovers that are denied for long, that when it happens your kindle nearly bursts. Their relationship has a ton of implications for both friends and family, but once that dam bursts, there’s no going back to pretending they're just friends.

Can’t wait to see what’s next in the series!
