Destination Hikes In and Around Southwestern British Columbia: Swimming Holes, Mountain Peaks, Waterfalls, and More

Rate this book
Discover 55 of the most beautiful hikes near Vancouver, each with an exciting destination to reward your efforts.

Stephen Hui, the bestselling author of 105 Hikes, shares 55 new day trips that celebrate nature big and small, including astonishing views like the Twin Sisters rising above Vancouver’s skyline, intriguing historical and geological sites, and hidden gems such as remote swimming holes and a 600-year-old tree. He covers sites from Duffey Lake and the Stein Valley in the north to Washington’s Cascade Mountains in the south, and from Nanaimo and the Gulf Islands in the west to Manning Park and the Coquihalla in the east.

With each trail, Hui acknowledges the Indigenous territory it crosses, inspires hikers to look around — at fungi lining the forest floor, at carpets of wildflowers — and showcases stops of interest at nearby museums, wetlands, temples, and memorials. Each hike includes a photograph, a topographic map, a trail description, and a difficulty rating — plus an at-a-glance summary of special features and recommendations for kids and shoulder season.

While I liked Stephen's first guide book, Destination Hikes is even better since in this book is free from the strict two page format required in the 103/105 Hikes series. As always, his books are well written and researched with easy to read maps and beautiful photos. I really liked the "destination" angle of this book as it allows hikers to do a hike and also visit a viewpoint, historical site, nature reserve, etc. in the same area - it's a day trip book designed for hikers.

The perfect followup to "105 Hikes In and Around Southwestern British Columbia." Stephen Hui knows B.C.'s backcountry amazingly well. The history and tips provided for each trail is really valuable, too. He always gives something new to discover.

I will be working through this for a long time but I love the selection of hikes and how they’re organized. The descriptions are good and make it easy to plan. I thought it was more of a short backpacking trip book, i.e: hikes worth travelling to, but instead the idea is that the hike has some feature of note - a waterfall, views, swimming, etc. It seems good alongside 105 Hikes in and around SW BC.
