This is Suzanne Mulholland's second book intended for those seeking to consolidate cooking several meals at once. Because of this, the way the recipes are presented are unusual, they start off listing the steps like a regular recipe up until the point where you either cook or freeze the food you are preparing, then there are separate instructions for each as well as a third section for reheating the dish from it's frozen state.
Despite the unusual recipe presentation, I did appreciate the aesthetically pleasing design/layout and the abundance of pictures of finished meals. The book provides a good variety of dishes that span many cuisines. Recipes skew healthy-ish and offer time saving tips, like using chopped frozen vegetables instead of fresh (but should you prefer fresh the author does provide a conversion chart to do so). Overall, less experienced cooks would likely benefit from and appreciate this cookbook more than seasoned cooks.
If there were more recipes that matched my own tastes (vegetarian, no fake meat, bit lactose intolerant, intermittently grossed out by eggs - I feel a bit like a princess saying this...), then this book would have been a five star. The advice is thorough and not only answers every question I thought of but plenty more besides! For example - how to change the quantity of a herb, depending on whether it's fresh, frozen or dried. I was already impressed at 10%. For a meat eater, highly recommended.
This is a good selection of varied recipes both ideal for bulk cooking and freezing for later combined with a low-calorie healthy aspect.
On the positive, you get good straightforward recipes, in a format suitable for both European, British, and US readers with clear instructions on how to make and long term store and reheat. The electronic version is also well laid out for said media.
On the negative, to me, there is an over-reliance on prepared convenience foods. It's not difficult to chop an onion so why use pre-chopped frozen onions in your recipes. There is some duplication and reputation on recipes. Variations on one basic recipe are presented as three or four separate recipes.
It's definitely worth the Kindle/EBook price but would have been less keen if I'd paid out for the hardback.
Another inspiring batch cookery book from Suzanne. Using accessible ingredients and not too complicated. Well explained instructions. All the recipes look tasty and healthy with ideas to feed the rest of the family who are not counting calories. Can't wait to do my first batch cook.
Lots of yummy recipes for the family. Love that you can freeze the recipes and use when needed also can make batches to keep in the fridge for during the week. My freezer will be full in no time. Recipes to suit all tastes. Definitely going to get Suzanne's other recipe books.
