In his last mission, Conor Maguire was called back into action by his handler, Ricardo, to go after a man who helped facilitate the terror attacks that devastated America. The intelligence garnered in that operation exposed a network of traitors within the American government—officials who had advance warning of the attacks and did nothing to alert the American people. Worse yet, they sought to take advantage of the situation, seeing it as an opportunity to further their own vision of government.
When Ricardo next pays Conor a visit, it's at the behest of a shadowy collective of patriots determined to purge the government of those who sold out the nation. It should have been a simple mission, a short trip to "punch tickets" in the way that Conor had successfully done hundreds of times around the world.
But nothing in this mission will be simple. Conor and his team find themselves thwarted or compromised at every turn. They're pushed to the edge physically and emotionally. When the dust finally settles, their world will be entirely different, the path ahead more uncertain than ever.
Franklin Horton lives and writes in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. He attended Virginia Intermont College and Virginia Commonwealth University. In his spare time he pursues outdoor adventures with his wife and two children. His interests include camping, kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, and shooting.
The Mad Mick rides again, and boy what a ride it is. Horton has once again challenged our imaginations and led us to new adventures. Get ready for a wild ride, readers. This one's a doozy!
For a book to be interesting, it has to have a great plot. For a book to be GREAT it is the characters. This is why I love Horton's books. Just a sentence, sometimes a word that just sticks in your mind.
**Who? Barb? The child was born with a scowl on her face and had kept it for most of her life, but he kept all that to himself for matters of personal health and safety.
**Hell, I'm not sure I even understand what happened and I was there at the conception."
Words only Conner can say and you know it is him and heaven forbid? Could he actually be mellowing out? Now Barb. Oh she has a wicked, sharp tongue on her. But you have to read the book to get them.
I did not mean to just plow through all of these books but when you get done with one you want to pick up the next one in the series, they are a absolute edge of the seat thriller at times while also being a apocalypse survival masterpiece. I love that things do not always go the protagonists way. This book is certainly evidence of that. While these veer heavily into the fantastical they also deal with reality in that some times bad things happen to good people. Sometimes a bad death can happen to someone in the blink of an eye. Sometimes the hero just cant get there in time. I was so wrapped up in what was going on that I am actually 95% done with the next book and realized I had not left the review for this one. Its also quite amazing. Franklin Horton is the absolute master of post apocalypse fiction.
Mick, also known as "Mad Mick" ,Doc and Mick's daughter Barb are on an assignment to eliminate the very prominent traitors in America who want to strip all Americans of their civil liberties. Most importantly the right to protect themselves in a world in apologetic shock. Basically everyone is on their own. The people in power are offering shelter, electricity and their form of protection. Submission. Mad Micks world is about to change dramatically. His employer, rules of conduct....everything will change. Another excellent read in this series!!!! Enjoyed immensely!!!! My highest recommendation!!
I finished “Punching Tickets” by Franklin Horton (2021), book 5 in the Mad Mick series. This one takes Connor, Doc Marty, and Barb on a mission beyond the borders of the USA to assassinate some of those responsible for the terror attacks that crippled the nation. Ragus and Shannon are left to watch over the compound while a violent drifter, nicknamed “Wombat”, stalks through their part of the country, killing whoever and taking whatever he wants. When Wombat discovers Connor’s compound, he starts planning on how to break into it and maybe even take it over.
Getting some characters away from the relatively compact setting of the community where they live was a good move, I think, to add some variety to the story. It also allowed the reader to get some perspective on what the international situation was like. The way they were taken abroad seemed plausible, even with power knocked out and transportation being difficult thanks to lack of fuel for most.
The action scenes were good, but there was an operation where Connor and Barb have to sneak onto a boat and take out some enemies that unfolded in a weird way; knowing what I know about boarding parties (which isn’t much), I would imagine that the operation would have gone at a much faster pace than described in the book. I also think that Connor swings from showing restraint where he should have acted instantly and vice versa a few times. Kind of odd.
There’s quite a few characters that get killed off in this one, so the dynamic of the story is bound to change going forward. I plan to keep reading this series, so I guess I will find out.
Not my favorite Mad Mick, but still full of the typical action. Conor, Barb, and Doc are off on another mission to take out some of the high profile traitors behind "the fall." That turns out to be a disaster, as the operation is compromised and there is a mole on board the ship carrying the targets. While on board, Conor learns that the Saudis are deeply involved. Barely escaping the mission, thanks to Shani, Conor and Barb land in Israel, where Conor meets his previously unknown love child. As luck would have it, the same cruise ship is found and Conor and Barb head back out to take revenge.
Meanwhile, Ragus and Shannon (Doc's daughter) are left behind to watch the Virginia compound. Shannon convinces Ragus to go for a fun little field trip to show her where he grew up. Little do they know, some psycho named Wombat is traipsing around the countryside clubbing people to death for no apparent reason. Ragus and Shannon are caught off guard, and Wombat takes control of the unguarded compound. Fortunately, Wayne arrives and gives the Wombat a taste of fine hickory.
Not up to the quality of the rest of the Ma's Mick Series
I loved the prior Mad Mick books, but this one was a real disappointment. It had lots of Conor and little to no Mad Mick. Some of the dialog was nearing the painful point. Horton is one of the best of this genre and I suppose that it was unrealistic to think every book would live up to the promise of his earlier work. Both Conor and Horton were on autopilot and even dispensed with the mad scheming that makes Mad Mick mad. I hate to say it, but I would prefer to see the series die rather than to devolve to mediocrity. Both Conor and Horton owe it to the older Mad Mick not to dilute the series.
I hope Horton, in the unlikely event he would read this, to understand that this drubbing comes from respect for Horton's writing prowess and my affection for Mad Mick, and not from malice or disdain He can do better than this.
The Mad Mick and Barb went on another mission to take care of the Americans responsible for the country's downfall. It turns out the treachery goes deeper and farther across the ocean than the known group. We are used to the Mad Mick coming in, blowing some stuff up, and saving the day. This time, the mission does not go as planned. Back at the compound, Regus and Shannon have their own adventure when a killer comes to the mountain. I am not as big a fan of these terrorist missions as I was with the protection of the mountain, but I still like Connor and his crew.
Great story containing the Mad Mick series and expanding their world. Book works great as a stand-alone too so you can read them out of order without any problems.
Enjoyed the higher level strategic issues and thoughts and different setting for these characters. Really liking Barb again so it makes me appreciate what Horton is doing as the writer.
"Punching Tickets" was actually better than the previous book in The Mad Mick series if that can be said at all. All the books so far have been spellbinding, keep you on the edge of your seat narratives. And although someone in "the family" doesn't fair well in this story, the account never misses a beat, forging ahead into the dangers of living in this apocalyptic time period. I certainly hope the next books lives up to its predecessor.
This is one author I never miss. He writes way too little, but once you've begun, you can not put down. The Mad Mick series is a fantastic story of an assassin, father and strange character you will come to love. Patriot and lover of country. He is trying to bring America back after a devastating attack.
Franklin Horton has done it again! I read this book in two days and couldn't put it down! The Mad Mick is at it again in book 5 and the only bad thing about it is you'll wish book 6 was published already. Franklin Horton does not disappoint and I can't recommend this book highly enough! Keep up the great work!
This book had lots of action and a fast pace that we have come to expect from Mr. Horton. I was not excepting some of the things that happened. I am not a fan of killing off main characters but oh well, I am sure there was a good reason. Anyway if not for that then this would have been a great read. This book was a roller coaster of emotions and I can wait until the next book. Get the books and leave your reviews.
There really isn’t much to say other than it’s fantastic from woe to go. Make sure kids have food prepped for the day so the can’t disturb the peace while you sit and enjoy another brilliantly written Mad Mick series. Intrigued as to where this last novel left off and what’s on the agenda for the next installation.
Excellent characters development. The story line is sadly so realistic. You can just see that Conor and Jim will have a meeting. Should prove to be .....interesting. Wife and I have read everything this author has produced. We highly recommend him. Very entertaining. Try him, you will not be dissatisfied. Please keep up the good work!
I’m loving this series. I read allot of serious and often have to go back and refresh my memory on the previous characters and story line but not with the Mad Mick, I clearly remember and am always eagerly awaiting the next book - like now....so hurry up Frank
If it wasn't for my hectic life, I would have finished this book a lot quicker. I found myself wanting to pick up mg Kindle every minute I was away from it. Franklin Horton has done it yet again. The US is on the ropes and Conor is sent in to fix the problem. But, did he really succeed? You have to read the series to learn that answer.
I am really becoming invested in the characters. Watching them develop and grow has been a fun journey. This book was more sad than the previous books, but just was enjoyable. I find myself saying, "don't do it - watch out - or that was really dumb". Like i said - really invested!
Another fantastic voyage of the Mad Mick. The continued mysterious twists and turns coupled with tears of sadness and tears of absolute hilarious humor.
We are left in a different world at the end of this adventure which will keep us suspended to the new reveal.
Mad Mick is off and running from page one. The action doesn’t stop and more feels like riding a bronco. The ride is relentless, nothing & no one is spared. Can’t wait to see what Mad Mick will do now......
Franklin Horton added the Mad Mick as a minor character in his other works. He was so well liked by the readers that he got his own series. I look forward to each new book featuring The Mad Mick.
Enjoyed the continuation of the Mad Mick series. Ask the characters age the depth of the books become more inspiring and interesting as they meet the new challenges of today's world.
I’m not sure, but this may be my favorite Mad Mick book. The excitement was described in excellent detail, the story moved at a great pace, and as usual, it unfortunately was over all to soon.
The mad mick is back kicking ass and the heck with the names. You can't help like Conor, he's crotchety and set in his ways, but hey when you know the stuff he flows you have a right to be
I can't wait for the next book in the series! They just keep getting better. The conspiracy theory is very realistic and the characters are actually human. I can't put these books down.
Mad Mick!!! Takes us on another wild ride and the only disappointment is the two words The End! Will be stalking Franklin Horton for the next installment!!!!
This book was more of a downer than most, and the first time things aren't neatly wrapped up at the end. There's plenty of action, but things are much more complicated and that's not always a good thing. It was enjoyable, but... it was a downer at the same time.
I enjoyed how Horton took this from just an EMP collapse series and incorporated the mercenary missions. Things get intense, both for Connor and Bard abroad and the kids back home. Still one of the most interesting casts of characters, and incorporated into always exciting events.
