Years earlier Marine veteran and former Dallas Police Sergeant Jake Hathaway allowed Federal Government scientists to conduct top secret experiments on his soldiers, and on himself. They were given supplements designed to transform them into ‘Invincible Warriors’. Instead, the formula became tainted by some pesky, infectious prions. The result was a virus that transforms exposed humans, some more gradually than others, into frenzied, flesh-eating, cannibalistic ZOMBIES!!
Jake’s former police partners: Kelvin “Mack '' McElroy, a Belgian Malinois K9 named Roscoe, and a petite tattooed blond named Megan Anderson team up with a dwarf named Anthony and some survivalist prepper friends from Mississippi. Their mission: destroy the CREATURES, ensure an end to the ‘Infection Armageddon’, and most importantly- SURVIVE!! To accomplish these goals, their only chance may be to first find their missing friend, Jake Hathaway. As a result of the Marine Corp ‘Zeus Project’, he now possesses superhuman abilities. But is the team better off NOT finding Jake? Will they find him to be MAN - or - MONSTER?!
Merrill David is a brain tumor survivor who now resides in East Texas with his wife and their Chiweenie dog Vinny. Merrill's list of works includes his Wicked Awake zombie novel series, a splatterpunk sci-fi novel called Fester, a paranormal amusement park novel called Season Pass, a horror / mafia crime novella called Lasagna, two collections of my own disgusting stories called Appendage and Every THING You Love, extreme horror anthologies Head Blown and Head Blown Too, and a Western Horror anthology called Tumble Bleed.
Follow me at any of these places to be the first to know when my next book will be out!
If I did not think the protagonist Jake Hathaway had enough to deal with, Merrill David showed me differently! He meets almost insurmountable odds in his quest to survive! Not only does he fight for his life, but also to stop Merrill's terrifying view of the zombie apocalypse. To say that he goes through some changes would be an understatement! If you read Wicked Awake, you must pick up Merrill's sequel! You would be surprised at how the story ends!! Thoroughly enjoyable read of his horrific vision of the zompocalypse!
This is a really great series. It's really interesting to see what the continuing effects of the virus is going to have on Jake and where it will all lead. Plenty of excitement and action with the rest of the characters. Looking forward to the next book.
Dear Zombie horror fiction sub genre your lord and savior Mr. Merrill David has now expanded his Zombie gospel with 'Wicked Awake Too' and it's one, worthy of worship.
In 'Wicked Awake' Marine veteran and former Dallas Police Sergeant Jake Hathaway allowed Federal Government scientists to conduct top secret experiments on his soldiers, and on himself resulting into a total mess of a nightmarish Zombie Armageddon.
In 'Wicked Awake Too', Jake’s former police partners along with a dwarf named Anthony and some survivalist prepper friends from Mississippi are tasked with the mission to destroy the flesh eating monsters and end the Armageddon.
To do so, they must find their missing friend, Jake Hathaway. But at what cost?
What follows is an action-packed, zombie infested, goretastic thrill-ride, scary and fun enough to keep you nailed on your reading seat devouring page after page.
In 'Too', everything is amplified. The author manages to deliver an upgraded, on steroids follow-up to the already fantastic first story. The creatures are terrific and terrifying, the plot is incredible and super tight and the characters? Well the characters are monsterous, juicy, fun and definitely well penned.
This is definitely one hell of a book series that must be adapted into film or TV series as it beats the watered down version of the current state of shows we are presented with.
An adrenaline shot to the Zombie horror genre and a superb example of how things are done when eventually altered.
Wicked Awake, Too - Slaughter Before Slumber by supreme horror writer Merrill David is everything you want from the second book of a zombie apocalypse book series. More action, more romance, more comedy, more story and, of course, more zombies!
In the first book, Wicked Awake (reviewed 9/16/21) the author pulled us into his world building of a United States slowly overrun by people evolving into super human strength zombies. We learn how the government's failed "Invincible Warriors" project was to blame and we leave our hero, former marine and police officer, Jake, with the tainted formula coursing through his veins.
In this continuation we ride along with Jake's best friend, Mack, Mack's new lover tough tattooed Megan, resilient dwarf Anthony, a few tag along survival preppers, and most importantly, Jake's loyal K9 partner Roscoe, who must be protected at all costs.
As this motley bunch criss crosses the country, from metropolitan and suburban Dallas to rural Mississippi to the underground criminal elements of Las Vegas, looking for Jake, they encounter powerful zombies and very dangerous humans.
Every chapter is fraught with danger and action. Narrator C.J. Grey continues his brilliant storytelling voice acting with giving each character a very distinct voice that fits perfectly with the writer's clear precise descriptions of them.
Will they find Jake? Will he be a full zombie? Where is Jake's girlfriend Amanda? Can they find a cure? Mostly, can they survive?!
Written with a wink of comedic timing, a bow to gory horror literature fans and a few twisty turns to thriller lovers, this audiobook is pure escapism from the real horrors of this world.
All three books are available on Kindle Unlimited and in paperback. Definitely worth treating yourself to this fun zombie, dog loving, human emotional apocalyptic series.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
I was concerned that I should have read the first book before starting Wicked Awake Too but other than a few instances where things were cloudy, I found this book easy to pick up and go with and what a ride. Merrill David's storyline was an exciting ride featuring believable characters and an original spin on the Zombie Apocalypse that I for one found refreshing. All in all, this was an original, exciting, and action-packed story brought together masterfully by Mr. David. Now, I am going to go read Book 1.
Wicked Awake Too is wonderful when we were wearing white!
More alliteration than I remember from third year big school Latin class's Homer's The Illiad and The Oddessey. But in spite of the literary litany laid lightly in the lines, I enjoyed the book. Memorable characters performing in a remarkable storyline - I enjoyed this read. Good work!
Great for your next zombie fix, the Wicked Awake universe expands exponentially in offering #2 Slaughter Before Slumber. More is learned about the mysterious Zeus Project and the super zombies, such as main man / monster Jake Hathaway. Some zombies / zombies in the making are showing expanding powers, such as precognition and rapid healing and regeneration. (Also, animal zombies!!) And everyone has their own mission, which is survival.
I particularly liked the layout of science parameters of the zombie creation and powers in Chapter 7. As in the 1st Wicked Awake, author Merrill David likes to “flesh out” his storyline with lots of interesting facts on a variety of topics, places, or peoples in the book. Whether it’s the Amish community, industrial pig farming, survivalist communities, etc, you do get an education, especially in police-related tactics, policies, and pencil pushers.
The old gang is back and a few new human zombie fighters are added to the team. Mack and Megan take the lead roles through much of the book, with a certain Belgian Malinois alway nearby and as flatulent as ever.
Exemplary narration by C J Grey makes the action move rapidly through the audiobook.
