A pirate’s life is in fact for me

Who doesn’t dream of being a pirate as a kid? Dan E. Hendrickson brings those dreams to life and takes the reader on an adventure aboard the Red Witch, a pirate ship sailing the Caribbean in the early 19th century in the action-packed romance Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess.

The story centers on heroine Brandy, who starts the novel as a 15-year-old teenage girl, daughter of two renowned pirates: Captain Eric Erasmus (“The Plague”) and Katrina Mooney (“The Scarlet Mistress”). In a stunning betrayal, her parents are killed in front of her on the ship she was born on. Brandy, now a runaway, escapes in disguise with her uncle and spends the next 15 years in Jamaica running a tavern.
Striking, powerful, quick-witted and strong, many a sailor have had their eye on Brandy, but she turns all of them down… until one catches her eye, not just with his good looks, but with his charm and kindness. After swearing off her past at sea for good, could Brandy be persuaded to return?

The strength of this book lies in the plot. Many twists and turns were abound, and it was littered with historical themes from that era: the slave trade, and the politicians that profit from it; Caribbean pirates on the run as the Royal Navy hunts them down; the abolitionist movement rescuing runaway slaves to relocate them in Jamaica. Henderson did his research, and coupled the historical themes of Brandy with the wider literary world he had built in his “Last Enemy” series.
The weakness in this book, however, lies in the dialogue and the prose. It was incredibly wooden, making the characters very one-dimensional. The bones are all there for a great story, and it would have been even better if the focus had been more on world-building with the rich historical background Henderson already had, instead of having every character say everything they meant at all times. I need Brandy to tell me with her actions more so than with her words how she was feeling. She was clearly traumatized from a young age from her time at sea and watching her parents be executed in front of her. Let me see that with her actions and what she does not say, not have her tell me all of that to my face.

Because of the dialogue in particular, however, I think this book could be a particular hit with a younger audience, particularly ones interested in historical fiction and adventure. While I was interested in the romance, it was not central to the story, so someone looking for a steamy plot would be disappointed. However, this book did entice me toward other pirate books, such as The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty.

In closing, Brandy is a powerful heroine and sparked a newfound sense of adventure in me. I may have found a new genre to explore.

Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess by Dan E. Hendrickson is a brilliantly written historical novel about pirates, sea captains, corruption, slavery/abolitionism and redemption. The author's writing style is straightforward with the perfect amount of description and subtlety to keep the story interesting.

Can the daughter of two of the most infamous pirates on the Caribbean Sea move beyond the brutal teachings of her parents? Brandy Erasmus, daughter of the most feared pirate Eric "The Plague" Erasmus and his wife The Scarlett Witch, is about to find out.

It's 1829 and Eric "The Plague" Erasmus, and wife Katrina, The Scarlett Mistress, have been plaguing the waters of the Caribbean Sea for a quarter of a century, but their days of sailing The Red Witch to prey on American merchant ships for goods and slaves are coming to an end. Mutiny is afoot in the form of second in command Don Lomoche and his corrupt associates.

In the wake of her parents deaths, 15-year-old Brandy Erasmus is secreted off The Red Witch by her only surviving relative named Skinner, but not before Brandy avenges her father and takes a hand and an eye from Don Lomoche. Brutality is a way of life on a pirate ship even for a teenage girl who is now presumed dead thanks to the quick work of crewmembers loyal to The Scarlett Witch.

Fifteen years later Brandy finds herself in Kingston Jamaica helping her Uncle Skynyrd/Skinner run the tavern they bought when they first landed in Kingston. Life on land has suited Brandy for she wants nothing more to do with life at sea. Brandy is still trying to shed the brutal sword-fighting teachings of her mother and with help from Zhang Yong, a Master Shaolin priest from China, she may be able to find a balance of calm, strength and skill.

John Edwards, the best navigator on the sea, has spent the last eight years on The Morning Glory as first mate under the command of Captain Arthur Joshua, a well-known and revered British sailor in his own right. Though they help with the abolitionist's cause by transporting runaway slaves to safety, Captain Arthur has had a more personal agenda these eight years on the Caribbean Sea; he has a wife and daughter to find.

When John Edwards finds himself in Brandy's tavern sparks fly between them but, what will happen if he finds out about her previous life on a pirate ship? The very thing he's been fighting against. Will Brandy be able to move past her aversion to life on the sea and give in to her feelings for this handsome seaman? Can Brandy find the balance she needs and leave behind the brutality taught to her by her mother? Will Captain Arthur Joshua find his wife and daughter? What secrets will be revealed? Will Brandy bring Lomoche and his accomplices to justice? What dangers will these volatile times in the Caribbean bring to our characters?

Find out in Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess as Hendrickson masterfully weaves a tale of British naval life, pirates, villains, victims, action, humor and good old-fashioned romance.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. Other than a few editorial mistakes I found the book to be well written with fantastic plot twists, historical accuracy and enough suspense to keep the pages turning. I love the way Hendrickson brings Chinese culture into the story through Zhang Yong and works it in seamlessly according to the needs of the storyline. Hendrickson uses subtlety when it comes to teaching moments and emotion for his characters. He uses the perfect amount of description throughout the novel to give you a good understanding of what's going in the story. His writing is fluid and to the point. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to end.

I would recommend this book to those who love a good historical novel with interesting characters, plot twists, humor and not a lot of extra words to get in the way of a very good story.

Master Shaolin priests, stories of the far East, the practice of Tai Chi, pirates, slave traders and Her Majesty’s British Naval forces combine to bring the pirates of the Caribbean more realistically to life within the pages of “Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate.” From ship captains and tavern owners, to death curses and sea battle, this read uses romance and family to anchor readers firmly to her story.

Two very different green-eyed, flaming haired women kick this story off, Brandy and her mother. But, after barely escaping with her life, Brandy is determined to hide her true identity and never return to the seas which claimed her parents. Brandy, Davonte, John and Ralphie star in the story of Brandy and her family’s wretched pirating ways as we find Brandy working alongside Davonte in her uncle’s tavern. This new life on land is enough for Brandy, until John and Ralphie walk through the door one night. The events that these two set off drive the remainder of the story as the sea calls for Brandy’s return.

“Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate” houses a combination of vivid fight scenes and the courting of two young couples. Showcasing the author’s minister work within the pages lends a fitting tribute to the 1800’s setting of this story. Lodged amongst the beauty of the Caribbean islands, the slave trade and relations between the southern United States and Her Majesty’s husband rage as fierce as the sea. Intertwining history and romance in a more stunning story than even Johnny Depp can pull off, Hendrickson enraptures the readers with his tales both on land and at sea.

No detail is left unturned in Hendrickson’s penning of sweeping battles between Caribbean slave pirates and British Naval forces. The seafaring knowledge stored within is softened at the edges by strong, powerful female romantic interests and interracial coupling, providing ties to draw in a diverse audience of readers. To the very last page, we are left praying for more of Brandy and Davonte’s story beyond the bookends of this “Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate,” as this is seemingly just beginning.

John & Brandy

Brandy is the only daughter of two famous pirates. She was born in the middle of a storm on their ship, and she was training to follow her parents' steps. When she is 15, one member of the crew betrayed her parents, and they died in front of her. Brandy could run away with her uncle. They lived in Kingstown, Jamaica, running a successful tavern on the docks for another 15 years until Captain John Edwards arrives at the tavern.

The first half of the book was fast-paced and packed with adventure scenes, more historical than romantic and it was easy to read.

I didn't know about The Sailor King, and I enjoyed the historical side of the story. I learned a lot about slavery and the British colonies, but to tell the truth, I expected a more developed romance. I think the author didn't take advantage of the three months that Brandy was nursing John back to health to describe how they fell in love.

Regarding the characters, Brandy was great. She was so kind, grounded to earth, funny, brave, and hard-working, but John, on the other hand, was too perfect and sometimes a bit boring. He was a one-dimensional character, and I didn't feel him real. Everyone has their virtues and flaws. I didn't see the conflict in their relationship either. John accepted Brandy's past without fighting his honorable principles at all. That could have been the conflict, but the author overlooked it.

All in all, the book was good. It took me a few days to read it, but I enjoyed it.

‘Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess,’ is a historical fiction about Brandy, raised by pirates. When Dom Lomoche kills Brady’s father and her mother’s secret is revealed, Brady has to lift the curse from the ship and claim her right in this world.

The story was highly descriptive and filled with a beautiful narrative on the Caribbean islands. The battles and the way the storyline and the scenes interacted were exceptional. Everything from the characters and how they were developed created an enticing story.

The cover design complemented the content inside. The steady pace kept the reader wanting more, and as it was a historical novel, the facts and timing of things were well-researched and put together.

What predominately stood out in this book was Brandy herself. Her personality and demeanour towards everything were admirable, and how she dealt with all that was against her was a delight.

I recommend this book to fiction readers and those who like stories that contain thrilling concepts.

In Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess by Dan E. Hendrickson, we are taken to the century when pirates are still at sea. Brandy’s parents are the most feared of the pirates, being known as The Plague and The Scarlet Mistress. At fifteen years old Brandy lost her parents to the hands of Don Lomoche and British admiral Bennets. Brandy and her uncle are barely able to escape and go into hiding for the next fifteen years. During the fifteen years, they run a little inn in Kingston, Jamaica, and come across Captain Joshua and his First Lieutenant, John Edwards.

Captain Joshua and Lieutenant John Edwards transfer runaway slaves from the United States to Maroon. The King of England has kept Captain Joshua from his wife and daughter for seven years but when they are lost somewhere in the Caribbean, Captain Joshua asks if he can go out to find his family. Captain Joshua has a cause to save his family but will Brandy and her uncle, Skynyrd, help Captain Joshua in finding his family or will they take down Don Lomoche for revenge?

I really enjoyed reading this book because I love that Brandy is a very strong character. Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess pulled me into the story the moment I started reading it. The writing was tremendous and made me love pirates more than I already did. I enjoyed reading about how her uncle took care of her and made sure no harm would come to her. I will admit, I was surprised that they were able to go for such a long time without being found. Dan E. Hendrickson really outdid himself with this book and the events that take place are extraordinary.

The parts that I disliked were that it was a slow read until the end, and a few parts did confuse me. After the fourth chapter, the story did become slow because it was all in the same area and it was hard to keep reading it and stay focused on the story. I did a get a little confused because there were so many characters to keep up with therefore, I had to keep going back to some spots to reread and understand what was going on. I personally did not see any errors in grammar or spelling in this book.

Brandy Erasmus lives the pirate life for the first fifteen years of her life on The Red Witch. Her father, the infamous Erick Erasmus, is killed by his second in command, Don Lomoche. Her mother, The Scarlet Mistress, is captured by a British admiral named Bennetts and is forced to walk the plank where she hurls herself to her death. Brandy and her uncle barely escape the same fate but not before Brandy severs Don Lomoche's hand. The Scarlet Mistress had trained her daughter in combat skills from early childhood that would carry on throughout her life. Brandy and her uncle spend the next fifteen years in Kingston, Jamaica. Uncle Skinner shaved his head and dyed Brandy's beautiful red hair to black to live incognito. Skinner had saved a small fortune and acquired a tavern near the harbor and named it Katrina after the Scarlet Mistress. Life changes for them all when the most celebrated sea captain, Arthur Joshua, and his first officer, John Edwards, come to Katrina's one evening for libations. Captain Joshua and his crew are on a mission searching for his long-lost wife and daughter while transporting runaway slaves to Maroons, a safe community in the Caribbean during the 19th century.

I enjoyed this tale of swashbuckling pirates and the adventure that was prevalent throughout the book. The pirates are depicted as nasty and soulless men as I imagine that they were. The heroes of the story are God-fearing and authentic to the times that I would be inclined to believe of that period. I especially like that our heroine is a formidable force. Brandy does not need rescuing when in fact, she does the rescuing.

I found nothing to dislike about Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess. I found it to be very entertaining and informative. I feel that Dan E. Hendrickson did his research on the slave trade, shipping, and the true nature of pirates.

I rate Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess 5 out of 5 stars for the excellent storytelling of days we can now only dream about in a time of pirates and a life that is no more.

I recommend this book to anyone that loves a good adventure, a great love story, strong family ties, and good versus evil. Christianity is prevalent throughout the book that I feel is keeping with how life was in those times but not in a preachy or overbearing way.

An intriguing and excellent read that kept me attentive and wondering what is coming next. I was curious from the beginning because when most people think of pirates and their looting and plundering the first thought is male pirates. Not the case at all with the main character Brandy. Not only does she hold her own as a pirate but honestly exceeds in many ways.

When I began reading this book I thought it might be a simple tale of a pirate's adventure and it was adventurous but it was also so much more. The author kept the storyline very realistic and this kept me wanting more!!! There was quite a bit to learn about the slave trade of the time frim those who took place to those who wanted it stopped.

There was a good amount of history on the motivation for many of the pirates and people of the time period. Chinese herbal medicine as well as many other things were brought up in the story. A very excellent history lesson on many subjects. This captivated me as I read.

The author did such a good job with building the characters up and keeping the storyline moving. I was very impressed on all aspects. A very nice approach to adventurous, historical fiction along with a strong female lead character had me loving each page as I read through the book.

This story is wonderfully written...I think Brandy is a strong character in this story for many reasons...for having no fear in the face of her enemies..keeping her head strong as she diligently faced her enemies ,and not letting her unknowns in her personal life effect the objective that she was able reach, Wich was claiming back what was rightfully hers...The fact that she didn't come from the best parents but she didn't let it define her she used her power for love and out of love and claimed victory for the war she was in..There were alot of unknowns about who was on her side ,,but she seemed to still find love..she was able to protect Devonte while being held captive.and also saved her own hero in the midst this is a true story of Strength...Faith ... belief...and love.. and the value of having a strong family with unconditional love ..And to stand up for what you believe in no matter who the enemy is
she's a hero in her own right..for doing what's right and acting out of love...Story also shows me you don't need everyone on your team you only need the Good ones!
I'll be reading this book again!

Private princess

Even though it was a good book. It was very slow on the plot and ending. I always enjoy a good pirate book. When first reading It was very up and down. Good one minute, boring the next. It took forever for the plot to finally take place. The main character I felt she was having to go through alot of reflecting and trying to accept who she really was, while helping her family and friends. It's a good historical pirate read for young adults. I only give it a 2 out of 5 stars because it was a slow to read book It didn't keep me engaged and I felt some areas where all over the place and trying to keep up with different character perspective.

What do you do when you realize everything you believed in is wrong?

This is a story about a girl who loses everything and when she thought she was safe her past comes back to remind her of what she lost and what she needs to recover.

I’ve always been a fan of sea and ventures and pirates in general and this book definitely delivered a good old piste story.

I love Brandy and ow she determined she was. I really loved the person she slowly became thanks to the different encounters she had throughout the book.

I still don’t know how to feel about her parents and well I do not think there’s a lot to say about her uncle.

Nothing short of AMAZING

I loved the all around setting in this book. The author done a wonderful job at grabbing and keeping my interest. I didn’t like how Brandy and her mother had a terrible relationship. I believe it could have been a lot better. I would most definitely recommend “Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess” to anyone who loves a good adventure book and anyone who enjoys being pulled into the story. Pre-teen adolescents and older would be the age range in my opinion. I am going to end up reading this book again. That’s just how intriguing it was to me.

Absolutely one of my new favorite books. This story was a refreshing take on a pirate family and how having a daughter born on board a pirate ship can affect everyone on board. It is hard to believe a woman pirate would continue her violent pursuit of piracy after having a child. Brandy is in an unique position being raised on a pirate ship among so much violence. She escapes the pirate life eventually settling down on a Caribbean island. The story continues revealing much of her current life and how being raised on a pirate ship has affected her whole adult life.

Not my usual type of read, but Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess was a quick and fun read. I enjoyed the story of the pirate life as well as the change in lifestyle that Brandy and her uncle had to make after Brandy's parents' deaths (murders). I also enjoyed the love stories that evolved and the friendships that were developed. My only critique would be that things wrapped up too quickly and a lot of things what Brandy and her companions' way (not a lot of adversity). Overall an interesting and quick read.

The book really only gets into romance from Chapter IX and is more a general historical fiction than specifically romance. It's set in 1844 which is, I think, unrealistic. The age of Caribbean piracy had basically ended by 1820 by the 1840s there were still slave ships but that's not this book. This book is a rollicking sweet pirate adventure. It's written at an accessible level for ages 14 up. Since it's YA the romance doesn't get steamy but is sweet. I enjoyed it because I'm into history and I do recommend it. Enjoy!

A rollicking good story that follows Brandy, the daughter of pirates, and John Edwards, an officer in the British navy. An unlikely but irresistible pair, who together right wrongs in the Caribbean and fight to keep freed people from being returned to slavery.

I loved the Chinese priest and his lessons in this book as well. Very diverse, well written, and made me emotional. Not many books I read actually made me emotional, but this book did.
