First I will state that my review is based on an ARC of this book. It is subject to change at a later date should the issues be corrected in the edited proof.

The story itself is amusing. Ruby is a fun character but what really makes the book is her cat Rumpus. In this book, we meet a new witch who Ruby takes under her wing and who is Rufus's witch.

Fun story, interesting plot, and mystery.

Now the negatives...
There are a few issues in the book where the author loses track of who she is talking about. For instance, Ruby is teaching the new witch magic and has the new witch close her eyes while Ruby is watching her. The next sentence goes on about Ruby startling when she opens her eyes. That happens again when Rumpus's toy is turned into an item filled with cucumbers. She writes about it being Rufus's favorite toy, and then in the next sentence, Rufus is getting up to go see Rumpus get startled by the cucumber.

Those are issues with editing and I am hoping they will be corrected in the final issue.

My one last negative comment is the ending.... not a spoiler don't worry.

I absolutely HATE when an author actually writes the words "To Be Continued". Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I'm being talked down to and that I can't figure out for myself that there will be another book based on the CLIFFHANGER of an ending. I don't know why authors are suddenly putting that line in their books but it is really annoying to me.

That one little "to be continued" changed a 4.5 star into a 4 star.

All in all a fun read that I think most will enjoy.
Clean for teens and young adults.

nice story but the poor editing becomes frustrating

The series is lovely. Good plot lines. But the lack of attention to the proof reading and editing became so distracting that the book was becoming no fun to read. In the last 40 pages especially there are so many errors- double entries of same paragraph, typos, mussing section, Rumpus called Rufus.

There is a lot of effort to creating these stories. Why not make the final effort to make sure your work is finished. It is not that difficult to find beta readers or pay a small amount to have someone proof it. It would make a huge difference in the success of your books. Please do future readers a favor and edit and reissue this book. It’s a shame to waste a good story because of laziness.

You would never find JK Rowling putting out an unedited book. The snarky part in the book that alluded to Harry Potter was unnecessary as it didn’t add to the book. But it did make me more annoyed about the sloppy editing. I wouldn’t attack other books in your books. It’s very unbecoming and also lost you a star here.

There are lots of choices in this genre of cozy cat mysteries—so edit your books. If the next book is as sloppy, doubtful I will continue reading the rest of the series. It is a fun story but you need to remember that people are taking time out of their day to read your book. Make your book the best part of someone’s day or they will pick someone else’s book next time.

WHO AM I KITTEN is the second book in the Midlife Magic and Mystery series. While each book will stand on its own, read them all and in the order of release for maximum enjoyment.

I love the relationship that is building between Ruby and her new protégé, Allegra. I am glad that Rumpus and Rufus get to continue their tutoring as Ruby mentors Allegra.

Ruby’s friendship with the Chief of Police is also growing with mutual respect and desire. I like when there is true friendship in a love interest. The best lovers are best friends first.

This was a well-thought-out cozy mystery with Ruby assisting the local law as a “consultant” since it is obviously skirting the paranormal as well.

A few “small plot” inconsistencies that needed to be ironed out. I hope the author caught them between the ARC I read and the final release. Nothing that disturbed the major plot line and would require a major re-write.

My final word: I love these characters – especially the cats – and I look forward to reading more from this series.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Booksprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Finding a Killer . . .

Ruby Rivers and her feline familiar, Rumpus, live in a coastal town in Connecticut. Ruby is a witch who is the owner of a haunted Lighthouse inherited from her deceased uncle. Her relationship with the Chief of Police John Miller is off to a good start, at least until someone is murdered. We also have a teenage witch whom Ruby is helping with her powers and whose familiar is the kitten, Rufus, being mentored by Rumpus. Can John, Ruby, and Rumpus track down the killer before someone else is murdered?

This story is well-written and has great characters, including the two familiars who are Ruby’s companions. The light touch of humor is perfect. And I liked the comfortable way John and Ruby worked together. Grab your copy and enjoy this fun series. There is lots going on to capture your attention!

This is the second book in Corrine Winters Midlife Magic & Mystery series. At this point you'd probably be able to follow along even if you hadn't read the first book. I found the story fun and lighthearted. It was a nice lazy Sunday read for me.

Ruby is a middle aged witch who owns a lighthouse, she also has a bit of a (clean) romance with the police chief. She's assisting John on a murder case and at the same time she's also helping out a young witch understand her powers.

I think one of the best things about this story has to be the cats, especially Rumpus. The other characters were good and properly developed.

The next book in this series can't come soon enough.

I am really enjoying reading this series with Ruby the witch who now owns a Lighthouse after her uncle passed away along with her familiar cat, Rumpus. This installment includes her budding relationship with the Chief of Police John Miller and a teenage girl who learns that she’s a witch who’s familiar cat is the apprentice kitten, Rufus.

Ruby is helping the teenage witch how to use her powers as Ruby is assisting John with the murder of another prominent townperson.

Keep this stories for this series coming.

Ruby has found the young witch she is supposed to help. Ruby sees just what kind of life Allegra has, she realizes they are very similar. Ruby will help Allegra start to learn her magic. Ruby is again involved in a death investigation with John. She learns that Allegra's father could be guilty of the crime. Ruby and John work to find who killed the person and bring them in.

This was a really good story. I really enjoyed the developing relationship between Ruby and Allegra. It added a new dynamic to Ruby and her story. Ruby and John are slowly building their relationship. Ruby has a lot going on, can't wait to see what happens in next story.

So first, suspend all reality about civilian involvement in law enforcement investigations when reading these books. These are just brain Candy at the end of a day to unwind. No thinking, no deciphering a great plot, they’re just fun. Rumpus is funny and his supervising or being the “paternal” figure head in the dates is just hilarious. Ruby and Jon’s relationship is progressing slowly but surely, Ruby has a new apprentice, there’s serious subjects of domestic violence, grief, child neglect, alcohol abuse, interwoven in the story, but fine in such a way that it doesn’t bog down the story nor ignore the issues. Gerald, quick, quirky, reads.

Chief John and Ruby seem to be finding their way towards each other a few explosive steps at a time

Ruby finally gets to meet her apprentice witch Allegra, and things are more than a bit sloppy on that front.

A hungry petty thief with mechanical talent will likely be quite a handful- and she has an angry, drunk of a father with a temper

Can the team face down a demon, face the demons of Allegra’s father, and survive and maybe thrive?

Intense growth, pain, drama and action

entertaining paranormal women’s fiction series

This is an entertaining per women’s fishing series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Ruby is a witch who lives in a lighthouse in a small Northeast tourist town. She has a large orange tabby cat familiar is friends with a local sheriff and her friend Trixie is a pixie. She is also a mentor for a young witch in training and her familiar as well. Read on and see the adventures they get into and all the fun and entertainment you can have listening in.

Ruby, John and Rumpus are investigating when Ruby is surprised at spotting a severed human finger in with her fresh fish. She finds a magical newbie named Allegra whom she takes on to mentor. When is becomes apparent that Allegra’s father may be involved in the murder, Ruby investigates with the help of her boyfriend John and her hilarious kitty Rumpus. Ruby, Rumpus and John are on the trail of another killer. This one may be connected to her new witch apprentice. Love the characters and the quirky townspeople. The banter and situations keep the story lighthearted and fun. A relaxing, entertaining murder mystery, with just the right amount of tension to hook you right from the start.

I love Connie Winters’s writing. Her books are amazing and this is one of my favorite series! Rumpus is the funniest familiar. I do miss his and Rufus bantering back and forth, but Rufus has gotten better at the snarky quips since he’s got his witch now. Ruby and John are the perfect team. I love how they are so cute together. Looking forward to reading more about them all!

Great book!

I really enjoyed reading this! I love the cats, and all the characters. Ruby starts mentoring Allegra, and I love it. A great book! I hope there will be another! I don’t usually care about editing, but sometimes the wrong name is used which makes you stop for a second to figure it out. So not for editing snobs lol, but I don’t mind. I will definitely get the next one! Thank you for a great read!

Middle aged witch tutoring a young adolescent into witch life.

I really enjoyed reading this book where a seasoned witch is paired with a new one to help her learn how to be a witch.  At the same time, she helps her new beau solve a crime.  Easy to read, easy to follow the story with endearing characters.

I received this book as part of an ARC team and this is my honest review.

A fun read

This is the second book in the series and I will be reading the next one. I like Ruby. It’s nice to read a story with a witch who can do magic that is so versatile. The cats are … well… cats. They have fun personalities gods commentaries and over all protective of their witches. I recommend this series as a fun easy read.

Good story EXCEPT...

The story is really good. The proofreading is HORRIBLE: wrong names are the most prevalent. It really causes disruption to the story and it seems to be getting worse with each book in the series! PLEASE CORRECT THIS!!

I don’t know why I keep reading these. The stories are fun, the writing isn’t too bad, but the phrases used are so cliche and aren’t good. I’ll more than likely keep reading.

I was less enchanted with this book than the first one in the series. However I kept on reading thinking it would improve. I really didn't hold my interest. And then the cliffhanger at the end finished it off for me!

Why do authors throw in those cliffhangers at the end? If they think it will get me to read the next one in the series - they're wrong! I'm too mad about it and this author is crossed off my "To Read" list!
