This book seem a little redundant, and unreal. Impossible situation, one after another. The action seemed a little forced. There is no such thing as a Gulfstream 6700. All of the others, although somewhat unrealistic, had good character development and story. 3 stars is the best I can do.
Obviously, since I've just finished the 7th book, I'm a fan of Rachel Hatch. Despite failing to sever the bounds of credulity seamlessly, the action is addictive. Some of the setups are awkwardly amateurish, but The Plot drives everything forward. Now if only you'd have someone proofread the books my blood pressure readings would improve. And once again, please figure out the difference between lie and lay!!
Not quite as good as the previous novels but an interesting storyline. I like the character, Rachel Hatch, she is breathtaking individual totally reliant upon herself. Looking forward to the next novel. The writers also introduced a Babtz character and wondering if a new character and series is forthcoming.
O.K. I generally glance at other reviews just as I’m posting my own, but this time I had to pause. I wonder if we are all reading the same book. There are a few poor reviews that have left me scratching my head…and the only thing I can say is that some folks will complain if you hang them with a new rope.
But, embodying that which the majority of us readers seem to think (based on the 90% of reviews that give this book 4- or 5-stars), I enjoyed this book tremendously. And I love reading this series; it is one of my favorites, across all genres. The writing is on point with few errors (grammar/typos) and no glaring faults to throw the reader out of the story. It is an excellent experience to just give in, to let that internal editor relax a bit, and read for the pure love of a well told story.
As in previous books, the characters are as vivid as the plot. Rachel Hatch has evolved into a cool-headed protagonist who always comes through because she relies on herself and her 'self' keeps showing itself to be a valuable, trustworthy resource. The wisdom she soaked up from her father is finely honed and intertwined with her own hard-won insight. Her experiences, and some of them have been pretty extreme, seem to hold her together and boost her confidence and determination to succeed, to win at all costs when winning means everything.
In this book, Rachel heads to Alaska, which is experiencing major earthquake activity. Assembled is an intriguing cast of characters who add to the plot’s twists and turns. Rachel collects people the way some folk collect seashells or rocks. She takes care of her collection and, in turn, they seem to grow into their own lives from knowing Rachel, even tangentially. I liked Burton Hill, that handy old guy who paints houses and served as an Aerographer’s Mate Third Class. I ended up scurrying off to google “aerography.” In meteorology, it’s the production of weather charts; it’s a skill Mr. Hill learned in the Navy. He’s an interesting character; I’d love to sit and chat with him about earthquakes. I particularly liked his parting words to Rachel…very cool.
Then, there’s Christopher MacIntosh, who is part of the gang who kidnapped and tortured a US Marshall. BUT…MacIntosh is much more than he seems. Rachel’s people-reading skills are honed in on him and she learns what makes him tick, standing up for him when he is taken by the FBI. Without him, Rachel would have had an impossible time getting the injured marshal out of the Alaskan wilderness.
While the action moves from one calamitous event to another, Rachel keeps on keeping on. There is a horrendous number of catastrophes trying to topple our intrepid Rachel. They don’t succeed and even though we know she will emerge unvanquished in spirit, if with a bit of a vanquished body, reading this story is a thrilling ride.
Parts of Rachel’s past have caught up with her, too. First, there’s Cruise and we knew he was going to be surfacing after the last book. He is such a temptation. But also, there’s the Talon organization, up front and personal. I had – and after reading the book, still have – misgivings about trusting this private security company and government contracting firm. It was responsible for so much damage to Rachel and to completely innocent people. That firm is responsible for the team that killed her dad. Some terrible misdeeds have been committed by Talon’s teams and that’s a lot to let go of. If she decides to keep the corporation in her future, I hope she also keeps them in her sights. The men behind it have shown themselves to be deceitful and unreliable, not to mention downright dangerous.
I miss Dalton Savage, sheriff of Hawk’s Landing, Rachel’s great friend and potential love interest. While Cruise is no doubt pretty, he’s part of Rachel’s past and the next book or two will no doubt elucidate if she will ultimately have to choose between the two; I hope she doesn’t. It might be tougher to write, but I hope Rachel returns to Hawk’s Landing and uses that as her home base as adventures confront her. We’ll see….
I rated this book 5 well-deserved stars. Well written, far too easy to devour, and a new group of people to add to Rachel’s collection, this book offers a lot. It’s a fast-track action adventure in the Alaskan wilderness. I meant to slow down and relish this story, to savor each well-selected word, but I couldn’t stop myself from devouring it. Such a good book, I cannot wait for the next.
Meh. I don't have the energy nor desire for another mega rant, so I'm gonna try to keep it simple. This was just simply an okay book. The entire series after the first book has been mostly lackluster and this one is no different. It's at least a smidge better than the previous entry (by one star), only in that it had more interesting characters and a more harrowing plot. But even THOSE two ended up sorta backfiring. The characters were either not fully fleshed out, too numerous, or too much alike. And the plot, while dramatic and action-heavy in a "spurting" kind of way, it was also rather ridiculous.
Not gonna bother mentioning the plot, but of course it's the usual course of action in that something serious has gone down with a U.S Marshall being abducted in Alaska because...well honestly, I can't even remember the bad guys' motivations. It just happens, okay? And then it ends up yet again being Hatch who saves the day (for the most part) with some help along the way. Even when she was merely tagging along as observer of the covert government elites who SHOULD be handling the business, she swings into action when the elites are forcibly removed from the playing field by deadly landslides. But don't worry; there are still a convenient string of coincidences to help her along the way. River danger? A man named Hill happens to be there to save at precisely the right moment. A rescue of Lawson? Never fear, another man by the name of Macintosh is protecting him until Hatch's arrival.
I wasn't lying when this thing was ridiculous, especially when it comes to Hatch. The woman gets mangled, bashed, thrown, and nearly drowned along the way, but she comes out unscathed anyway. It's as if the author(s) forgot what barrage of opposition they threw at her as the story carried on, and there was barely any aftermath of the physical brutality she had to endure. Hatch has essentially been molded into a sort of superhero in these stories, when at first she was a cool HUMAN character for me to love. Now, all that's been tossed in the wind and she can survive literally, LITERALLY anything and be no worse for wear. There was no mention of recuperating for Hatch, no "aftershocks" of her wounds or damage to her body. It made everything she went through feel pretty meaningless in the long run.
The action is present, but it's very erratic and hard to visualize. I called it a "spurting" type of action earlier. A scene would be chugging along nice and calm and then boom, something crazy happens, and the author(s)' descriptions of the crazy flails around in a chaotic fashion to the chapter's end. I had a hell of a time trying to picture the things that were happening, like my brain couldn't properly build up the image into something coherent. It was like throwing a bunch of Legos together that don't belong to make some hodgepodge project. I am not THAT much a master builder, I guess. It all just left me feeling frazzled and confused and eager to just push onward without really understanding how a thing came to be. It was both exhausting and aggravating.
I appreciate the more numerous characters, some of which were fun to at least KINDA get to know, but overall, most were expendable in one way or another. And many of them felt the same with no distinguishable characteristics or personality. Either way, they all mostly ended up just serving as filler and fodder to an otherwise Hatch-led story. Some of the fight scenes were so over-the-top with the seemingly deadly wounds being nothing of the sort. One guy named Grizz gets slashed across his neck with a pretty gnarly weapon and is still totally, TOTALLY fine. Writing was teetering on the edge of mediocrity, but not as horrible as it was in some past books at least. This story ends in a typical loose-ended fashion, not quite cliffhanger territory, but more a "to be continued" fashion.
I'm still to the point of still not quite caring anymore about Rachel Hatch's endeavors, but knowing me, I'll still end finishing the entire series anyway. I'm thankful this specific entry was short.

Unbelievable chaos seems to be wherever Hatch lands. This time it wasn’t just bad guys but Mother Nature as well. This book takes her back to an early love. But we will have to wait for the next book to see what she decides. I personally want her to go back to Hawk’s Landing to her family and Dalton Savage. Are you listening LT and Brian?
Way too contrived for me. Earthquakes, entire "elite" force out of commission and only Rachel Hatch to save the day. Beaten to a pulp , mangled and always saved at the last second. C'mon man.
I am giving this four stars because I like the descriptions when tenors hit. Other than that, it was a quick read and if you are fan of this series then you have an idea of what is going to happen. I like Hatch although I would love to see her in more compromising situations then the one described here. Note to author: this one way to easy. Come on! She deserves more

Hatch is definitely the character of characters. She is forever looking to help those that can't help themselves. She finally meets up with Cruise and gets her interview and tryout with Talon Associates that killed her father. As always it becomes more than it is. The one Marshall is dead then the other gets shot and kidnapped by the white supremist group. So after the earthquake Talon operatives are hurt so Hatch goes in on her own. Nevertheless it becomes a kluster! But she is able to work with McIntosh to rescue the injured Marshall and defeat Gross and other members of his group!!!! Great story 10 stars plus !!!! On to next chapter !!! Thanks, Carl Clause
LT & Brian, you just keep getting better with each new novel. You two make the world a great adventure in reading. Thank you both for helping make my world a bit brighter.
Oh and everyone!!!!!??? Buy this story and don’t pass up a great delivery of action and suspense. Just make sure to cut the phone off before settling down for an hour or four.
This is by far the best in the Rachel Hatch series!! I just pre ordered book #8. Sad i have to wait till next year to keep up with Rachel and all her comrades but we'll worth the wait I'm sure👍
I listen to the audio narrations while I drive. This was better than bk#6, but the ‘it was all a mistake that we tried to murder you’ was hard to swallow. I loved the action and characters in books 1-3.
Aftershock was number seven in the Rachel Hatch series, and I read the previous six. Romance is not a strength of L T. Ryan, and that observation is rather clear in this installment. Ryan does, however, excel in describing action, whether it be shooting, hand to hand combat, or escaping impossible life threatening situations. The author tests the boundaries of credibility, when Hatch entertains the idea of going to work for Talon Executive Service, an organization that killed her father and attempted to kill her. Her inside mentor in this venture is Cruise, a man that she fought with and had a relationship with in the military. Only her trust in Cruise (not sure he has a first name), convinces her to explore the possibility of working for Talon. The Talon team is tasked with subduing and arresting a nasty crew of meth lab operators in Alaska, and Hatch is invited along as an observer. I'll stop there, but suffice it to say that the mission goes awry, and Hatch becomes a crucial cog. The book is rather short, but it is packed with an abundance of Alaskan action scenes. Along the way she meets up with some honorable characters including an earthquake chaser and ex-con, who was victimized by bad luck, but in reality is a solid human being. Quite a bit of the early part of the book is devoted to Laura Babiarz (Babz) and Medina and an FBI unit, but their involvement in the book seemed rather minor. Perhaps the author was setting up for future plots. This book was OK, but I liked earlier versions in the series better.
Hello Booklovers. Welcome to the next book in the Hatch Series, 'After Shock.'
If you have read the short stories, you already know the backstory of Rachel Hatch, the main character. She is a former Army criminal investigator who has a troubled past and a knack for getting into trouble. After surviving an attack at her home, she goes off the grid with the help of her friend Savage. She had also received a mysterious text from someone who claimed to know her and warned her about the attack. She decides to meet this person, who turns out to be Cruise, her ex-boyfriend and former colleague. He works for a shady organization that has been hunting Hatch and was responsible for killing her father. He wants her to join them, promising that she and her family are safe now. And to prove their sincerity in the offer, he invites her to tag along on their next mission: rescuing an FBI agent in Alaska. But things go wrong quickly, and Hatch has to use all her skills and instincts to survive. This book is full of action, suspense, and twists. You won't want to miss it!
Always a Good Ride The Rachel Hatch character always produces an intriguing, hang-on-tight storyline, and this audiobook is no exception to that. This woman has no "quit" in her, even when everyone else around her is throwing in the towel. I love her sense of purpose, her strength, and her honor. I love how she just puts her head down and pushes through to get the job done. I love that she manages to do all this without being some self-absorbed, smug ball-buster. In her mind, it's not about her- it's never about her.
There are some fascinating new characters in this tale that add extra depth to an already great novel. This story took a turn I didn't see coming with the return of an old love. He seems really interesting, but I'm still hoping Rachel and Dalton Savage have a future down the road. Yeah, still the hopeless romantic, even when reading about tough women.
If you're new to Rachel Hatch, no problem. The authors are great at keeping the reader up to date so that you can jump in at any point. I'm pretty sure they realize that once you meet this character you'll want to go back and catch the rest of her outrageously over-the-top but oh, so rewarding adventures.
In the seventh installment of the Rachel Hatch series, our protagonist arrives at a crucial destination that shakes her to her core after a revelation from Navy SEAL Aiden Cruise. The story unfolds when two U.S. Marshals fall victim to an ambush during a stakeout, leaving one dead and the other becoming a hostage.
Hatch becomes involved in a task force searching for the missing U.S. Marshal in a region threatened by potential seismic activity reminiscent of the devastating 1964 earthquake. The situation intensifies as their target, a white supremacist leader of a militant cult-like organization, holds the surviving Marshal hostage in the same tremor-prone area.
As increasingly violent tremors hamper rescue efforts and Hatch's team suffers casualties, she finds herself paired with a quake chaser in a race against time. Together, they must rescue the captured Marshal before either the white supremacists or the impending earthquake claims another life.
This pulse-pounding thriller keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end, masterfully weaving together natural disaster, human malice, and heroic determination.
Rachel Hatch 's live changed the moment her father was murdered. Then they came after her. Talon. Her father worked for them and they turned on him when he left. The operators chasing him, who killed him were following orders The people giving the orders were corrupt. Bent. They were removed. Permanently. Talon is a secret organization in the government. Their operators and leaders all top-notch former tier one operators. Now, the operators sent to kill her want her to join them. She is asked and consents to accompanying them on a hostage rescue mission in Alaska. Only as an observer. Unfortunately shortly after their arrival earthquakes obliterated their mission and killing some of their operatives. What ensues is non stop action, intrigue and bravery in its highest level. My highest recommendation!! Enjoyed immensely!!
7th in the Series. This time Rachel Hatch aka Hatch is on her way to California. She has been contacted by her former boyfriend, who has sent her messages to watch her back. She wants to find out what he might know about the agency who is trying to kill her and had killed her father.
When she arrives, Cruise lets her know, that yes they were responsible, but they want to set things straight and she is free from them trying to kill her. In turn, they ask if she would like to join their company?? Not accepting a position, she is just going to go on a mission with them, but only to fact find and she if she can trust them.
This takes her to Alaska, where an earthquake might happen any minute, but will the earthquake be what takes Hatch's life this time or does this agency have other reasons for her joining them.
Aftershock captures Hatch at her best in cold and snowy Alaska. During Rachel's stay, she meets an old beau from her military days. The old beau gets hurt badly, and Rachel must get him to a hospital in a sled in a snowstorm. Just another ordinary tale for Rachel. Along the way, a cabin fire causes her to find a convict on there run who helps her get the injured beau to a hospital. What happens in this book is extremely affected by the cold and snowy of Alaska, and Rachel's heroism in the can e of adversity!
Ex soldier Rachel Hatch is invited to join the agency that killed her father and tried to kill her. Her ex lover works there. She goes with the team to rescue a captive Marshall and end the reign of white supremicist meth heads. But mother nature has something to say about it.
This was fast paced. I thought the inclusion of the FBI team was redundant. The female agent was too much like Hatch, reviewing the wisdom imparted by her agent father. But otherwise exciting read.
Actually have read the first few chapters and decided not to finish the novel. Why would Hatch who was supposedly dead just suddenly reappear? Why would Hatch even consider working for an organization that killed her father and tried to kill her? The rekindling of a romance with a previous lover when already had another person she was developing a relationship seemed awkward. The novel got good reviews, but that is not enough for this reader to consider finishing reading this novel or consider completing the series Not recommended.
I've been reading the Rachel Hatch series in order and I've been enjoying the series thoroughly - until this one. The story jumps around a lot with no sense of continuity or even an understandable time lapse between events. I was whiplashed by the jarring switches in the story that seemed redundant and weirdly repetitive: Talon mirroring FBI HRT, Agent Barbiaz almost a Hatch clone. This was a struggle to read and finish despite the interesting premise.
This is the seventh book in the Rachel Hatch series I have read. Set in Alaska this story features lots of action that is appropriate for a Hollywood Movie. The book is pretty fast-paced and intensive. In this story, Hatch is offered a position in Falon Enterprises, once her antagonist, initially as an observer. This ends up in a situation where Hatch ends up shouldering much of responsibility of saving a FBI officer in Alaska from a drug-running criminal gang.
Now that I think about it, I remember learning about about seismic movements and plate shifting !! Thanks for sending me back to my library to 'refresh' what I had forgotten !! It would have been nice to have read this book 'way back when' as I learned this in science class !! Each Rachel Hatch book I read let's me see something new about relationships and what's really important in life !! I'm beginning to think of her father as one of the 'main characters' in your writing !! Thanks Again, L.T. !! I'm A true fan !!!
Hatch meets Talon, the group originally responsible for her father's death and finds a better organization than she thought. She goes on a mission as an observer and finds herself in Alaska during a disastrous earthquake . I would pre order the next book but I am in a post hurricane disaster myself without power . This was great reading , however I did find one typo .
This series grabs you right out of the shute and holds your attention all the way through each book. I binge read this series in the past four days and can’t wait for book 8. Both of these authors are good at hat they do..and write. Both have the way to the spot in your brain that wants a good book to catch you unaware that it has you in its grip before you even know it. I’ll keep reading; you guys keep writing!
