Mr Smithfield is the story of Gabriel Chase, who is trying to navigate single parenthood, his demanding job at a law firm, and his attraction to his American nanny Autumn, who’s 10 years younger, and completely off limits. I really liked the latest addition to the Mister series; I think it could be my favourite yet.
Gabriel is struggling to keep on top of everything, a high-powered lawyer with difficult clients and to be present in his daughter Bethany’s life, ever since his ex-wife walked out of their lives without a word three years prior. He’s hired Autumn, his best friend’s soon to be sister in law for the summer until her new job starts, and whilst there’s an attraction there, they both know that nothing can happen. But soon, the close proximity of living together, Autumn’s personality shining through and the love she so clearly has for Bethany, means Gabriel can no longer deny the feelings he has, and they begin a secret fling. Both begin to fall quickly, especially when they both reveal sides of themselves, they’ve always kept hidden from others, but when plans fall through, and people from their pasts reappear, was it always going to just be a summer fling?
Gabriel and Autumn’s relationship was so well written, full of steam, emotion, and a real connection. They got each other in a way that no one else had before, even Gabriel’s ex-wife, and they both helped them realise things about themselves that they hadn’t known. They both grew as people in this book, facing their pasts and questioning their futures, and they both had to find answers to these before they could be together. Despite the age gap, the fact Gabriel was Autumn’s boss, or how his friend had warned him away from her, they both knew they were meant to be early on; it just wasn’t an easy journey to forever.
Gabriel was so put together and serious on the outside, but behind closed doors, wow the man had a filthy mouth, it was amazing. I loved how he felt he could be his real self with Autumn, not the man who had been surviving for the past three years making sure everything around him was perfect for Bethany but not taking care of himself. He was such an incredible dad, something which made him only more attractive, and his protectiveness at times could’ve been seen to be overbearing, but to me was completely warranted. But his understanding and ability to put Bethany’s wants and needs first even if it was the complete opposite of his own feelings, was so beautiful, even if it hurt him to do so and took him a while to convince was the right thing.
Autumn is my favourite heroine from this series so far. Having met her in Mr Knightsbridge, you got a feel for her character, but once you peeled back the layers of the constant sunny personality and smile, she always seemed to have, she became so much more real. Always trying to see the positive to keep everyone upbeat after a troubling childhood was her job, not wanting to cause more worry or upset, so having someone like Gabriel around who could be her safe place to fall, and could carry the burden easily was something she wasn’t used to. She too always put her own needs to the side and focussed on what was best for others, something that meant Gabriel was so well matched for her.
Louise’s writing was great once again, I love getting the feel of London from the book too, and this time an area I wasn’t familiar with. It gave it an extra edge and makes you feel like you are there, something I have been missing during the UK’s lockdown. I am still intrigued by the rest of the boy’s story’s and I am so excited for Joshua’s next! Mr Smithfield is another must read from Louise!
