Why They Hate Us: How Racist Rhetoric Impacts Education

Rate this book
This book examines how racist political rhetoric has created damaging and dangerous conditions for Students of Color in schools and higher education institutions throughout the United States. The authors show how the election of the 45th president has resulted in a defining moment in U.S. history where racist discourses, reinforced by ideologies of white supremacy, have affected the educational experiences of our most vulnerable students. This volume situates the rhetoric of the Trump presidency within a broader historical narrative and provides recommendations for those who seek to advocate for anti-racism and social justice. As we enter the uncharted waters of a global pandemic and national racial reckoning, this will be invaluable reading for scholars, educators, and administrators who want to be part of the solution.

The book, "Why They Hate Us: How Racist Rhetoric Impacts Education", is a recommended read for students, educators and faculty working K-16. The book explores the detrimental impact of the Trump administration on the education experiences of POC. All the stories in this book are personal narratives of students and teachers from different grades and demonstrate the issues of racism students are living through since the Trump era. The authors emphasize that we need to reform policies, combat current racism, and address political rhetoric that is affecting K-16.

The book touches on topics that is well-suited for courses on critical issues in education, the college student experience, the public education student experience, and race relations. It also does a fantastic job in explaining racial nativism and how it’s effecting education. Readers who read this book will learn about how public and higher education institutions need to take responsibility, start decolonizing education and establish actionable goals to advance anti-racism. It is an informative and fantastic book!
