19 stories full of awesome ideas and imagination, but often lacking polish. I think there is a lot of promise here and I’m glad each of these stories was published. I hope these authors will continue to hone their storytelling skills. I think additional editing assistance might have really elevated this book - too many of the stories don’t really go anywhere, or start to go somewhere then abruptly end. The book badly needed additional proofreading. But there are definitely stories worth reading and writers with tremendous potential in this compilation.

Simply a fantastic sampling of the most talented voices in not only Afrofuturism, but in Speculative and Science Fiction in general, including Nebula nominee Balogun Ojetade, Zig Zag Clayton, Milton Davis, Minister Faust, and Donovan Hall, among many others. I come back to this anthology and its counterpart Cyberfunk! :The City time and time again for the luxury of escaping into the worlds these authors have created. Black Speculative Fiction is for everyone to enjoy, created by and from uniquely Black perspectives that are breaths of fresh air and healthy for Science Fiction in general. Anything by MVMedia is going to be quality. Pick this up along with The City, Steamfunk, and Spyfunk, curl up in a comfy place, and enjoy.

A great collection of short stories. Some I wish were full novellas or longer, and some that didn’t click with me. I enjoyed the amount of cyborg/mech/tech, and especially loved the story about the corrupt politician with the dog Mubsy Wubsy.

Like most anthologies, a mixed bag, but the quality is generally good, and it opens very strongly. Published in 2021, one of the stories features a social media owner attempting a hostile coup of the US. Cyberpunk, ever the Cassandra of genres.
