Individually they're meek, mild and soft. But together, with their combined talents, they're a herd. The Nerd Herd.
Barny the Lamb and his friends may have scared off the fox. But now they have a new problem. A gigantic bull (with behavioural issues) is on the loose. Can Barny and his gang get the bull back in his pen and earn the respect of the petting-zoo farm? Or will this be another big mis-steak?
Hilarious. Exciting. Clever. What an incredible sequel! I loved the antics the Nerd Herd conjured up to outsmart T-Bone. We’ll show you who’s boss. Right after we run screaming.
The Nerd Herd are such a cool group. Interesting characterisation and dynamics. The winner of the laughter award went to the Vampire Leeches.
What I love about these books is that I enter thinking ‘a story for kids’ and exit having realised I’ve enjoyed them FAR more then all the big fancy Booker Prize winners I am ploughing through in my current reading challenge. They are funny, and they are SMART. I’ve heard the trope ‘the adults will get a lot out of this’ used a lot for kids’ movies, but never seen that realised so fully in books before.
Anyway, on to the main audience… I read this book to my 6 and 8 year old nieces via Zoom and they LOVED it. Even my 14 year old nephew started listening in on the side. They were open-mouth laughing from page 1. The clever illustrations are paired perfectly with language that is never ‘dumbed down’ for kids but still provides clarity and humour. The story line is winning and manages to embed really good lessons (believe in yourself, embrace your inner nerd, the importance of friendship and loyalty, look beyond the surface) subtly and elegantly. And did I mention funny? My personal favourites... the enormous cookies, vampire leeches, and embrace-your-inner-hoarder storyline.
Am I looking forward to the next book? Un-bull-ievably, yes.
A combination of graphic novel and chapter book, this was a light read that followed on directly from Book 1 as the friends need to resolve the issue of what to do about the angry bull and fixing the electric fence. Miss 6 is looking forward to Book 3.
Miss 6 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
