Rei, a former samurai lieutenant is reincarnated into the body of an 8 year old, who happens to be the main villainess in a romance novel for foreign girls. A villainess destined to be executed by her fiancé the crown prince for cruelty towards the heroine of the novel.
To avoid being executed she must to make allies among her enemies, get out of the heroine's way, and untangle herself from the poisonous intrigue of court the best she can in the role of a future courtier. However, the vaguely described backdrop said nothing about the conflicts building beyond the heroine's understanding, or that women weren't allowed on the battlefield.
I LIKED IT!!! Ignoring the many wrong word use, grammatical errors and awkward terms, it was a well-written and well-fleshed out story by a novice author. I appreciate the character designs that almost never stray from their designed attitudes, morals and beliefs. Especially the MC, when against all odds, she was never anything but a samurai through and through. She doesn't need much growth because of course she was already an adult soul, which is realistic than some other stories with the same main plot. Other characters also doesn't stray much from what was expected of them. It might get frustrating at times, but I appreciate how the author gave them their own set of character as if they were actually real, thinking people.
I also like the style use by the author in her storytelling. The way she arranged the sentences, the dialogues, the maturity it felt. (Of course ignoring the errors, but that is just a minor matter to me) I never felt deeply with Lily but I enjoyed her journey together with the people around her. I was sad for Asher but I know, he cherished his life and his Joy. I just wished he found a good woman to spend the rest of his life with. If not, he can get isekaid to marry me instead🤣.
Reading the end of the story was bittersweet and conflicting. It also shows that not all can end in happily ever after (As per Jesmaine's fate - though I'm glad Jacques realized that enough hurt is enough) And also, I didn't read about the aftermath and effect of Magdalin's parents punishment. I would have liked to immense myself in their pain.
All in all, I think this is a first time I've meet a character (Lily) who is actively outside the norm of what is expected of a main character of this type of stories. Her character as samurai never wavers, she didn't suddenly grows compassion to lower status (which at one point I hated her. But a the story moves on, I understand where she's coming from), she immediately rejected any thoughts of treason due to loyalty and honor, and she was such a prude, it was kind of cute. So imagine my shock when
Well, I'm ranting so I just wanna tell you all to try this story (I want to say a lot of things too but I suddenly felt lazy typing - It would have been fun if I could put my mind review here, less hassle 😁). It might not be for all, but for someone, it might be exactly what they're looking for. Sigh, I'm gonna be hangover now for a while. 🥲
[Warning; Kinda long and it’s also a vent, also swearing] [This is counted as OI right?] [TL;DR available at the end]
I’ve been reading a certain novel for a while and I’ve been genuinely enjoying it. The MC here is a battle hardened samurai who transmigrated into a lonely little villainess named Lily.
It is an interesting perspective since the MC is not the typical “I work a dead-end job with no one that cares for me” and rather someone who is important, experienced, familiar with magic, and not from the modern world. (She is very impressed with toilets)
I especially liked the War Arc where she (as an 8 year old dressed like a boy) leads their army to victory despite being vastly outnumbered and finally showing her family and her territory what she’s made of. Is it kinda unrealistic? Yeah, but are we really looking this genre for realism in the first place?
However my impressions of this book immediately soured once I reached chapters 61-62. In this chapter a commoner named Helena (who maybe has something against her) proposes in their economics class that the nobles should start being taxed more so it could be used to help the common folk be more educated and have easier access to medicine. The MC told her to stop and started to point out the flaws that are present in Helena’s proposal. Then at some point MC says:
"In other words, you wish to say that we are equal, despite our titles?"
Helena responds proudly with a “Yes”
MC gets mad and was like “If you get attacked what do you do?”
“Flee cause the knights will deal with them”
And MC said “What a hypocrite, if we’re equals why expect knights to fight to save you?”
??? What? Helena says “Cause that’s what knights are trained to do?” I mean yeah? Knights ARE trained to fight? In the same way a seamstress sews and a baker bakes, knights protect?
Then the MC goes on a tangent about how that is what the nobility do, protect. Helena basically said “What?? Aren’t we (the servants) the ones getting sacrificed for you?” MC then says “the maid swore herself to loyalty, do not sully her courage!” WHAT A CROCK OF HORSESHIT. So because someone is employed that means we should get sacrificed for our bosses?
Mc then goes on about how nobles only serve their lord and that they should never serve the crawling filth that begs for their lives and turn on their lord to live. How the greedy nobles that exploit the working class ‘aren’t REAL nobles’ and that commoners should be grateful to their lords that they protect such FILTH (she legit said filth) and that they should know their place!
How the nobles that don’t follow such ideals don’t deserve respect WHILE SHE OFFERS NO WAY TO REMOVE SAID NOBLES FROM POWER
Helena then (basically) asks her “What would you do if people got fed up with your bullshit and stop breaking their backs to feed you your extravagant meals?” And OUR MC MIND YOU responds with fucking
“Tell the army to get the food they need however they want. Taking them from peasants that want them to starve should be fine, shouldn’t it?”
WHAT? She is blatantly promoting using the fucking army to raid her people of their hard earned supplies. An unabashed declaration of terrorism AND of how little she views those ‘beneath her’.
The worst part about all this is that the story depicts her as ABSOLUTELY RIGHT (because she can’t have fucking flaws can’t she? No ‘course not) and that Helena is undeniably wrong for how dare she think that commoners can ever be as great as the glorious nobles?
Helena was right, shes a monster. Helena then says “They (the commoners) deserve better!” And MC responds basically saying “They already have everything they need, commoners being equal to nobles is unrealistic and so is your dream”
Then what? Let’s say our MC is absolutely perfect and flawless and just. What about the others? Not everyone lives in her territory, are they supposed to just grit their teeth and bear with those that exploit and harm them for the sake of their own pleasure? I’m starting to think MC is the naive one here. I know the MC is saying this because she isn’t from the modern world where the nobles are practically irrelevant in a lot of places but why does the story proclaim her views to be undoubtedly right?
I’m honestly rooting for Helena and hope that MC gets a lesson slapped to her face on just how privileged she is just because she was born a noble, but that will honestly never happen.
This just basically killed whatever charm the story had for me. The amount of elitism, worshiping of the wealthy, and blatant rich good commoner bad and greedy are too much for me to not get frustrated over. And I’ve read through some real shit novels. The MC gets a damned “She just doesn’t know what you deal with” at the end of it.
I honestly have should have expected these kinds of things considering how the MC goes on a tangent at the beginning of how GAUDY OGLily’s tastes were with so much PINK and how dare the dresses be poofy and have laces and frills and ribbons? But I wrote it off as the MC being from a different place with different cultures of course she’d find it weird.
I even excused the MC’s blatant slut-shaming of her mother in chapter four saying how her mom looks awful and how dare she wear makeup and jewels and show BOOBS? Even though historically people didn’t really see it as being sexual? I wished I didn’t but apparently my mind has gotten used to the misogyny in these kinds of stories.
What a disappointment. I was actually looking forward to this series since it seemed like it had promise. Many commenters are also agreeing with MC so talk about more disappointment. My interest in this book has effectively been killed so please recommend me any good novels.
TL;DR MC has a shit take and promotes acts of terrorism which is getting praised by the narrative since she is the MC and Helena deserves better. Also us the readers and writers need to stop glorifying the wealthy.
