Forgiveness is a hollow prayer you only hear in your dreams.
Patrick Collins has spent years handling cases as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency, even as his secret standing in the preternatural community has changed. He should have confessed to his role as co-leader of the New York City god pack when he and Jonothon de Vere took up the mantle months ago, but he didn't. Now that split loyalty will cost him at a time when he can least afford it.
Outmaneuvered, framed for murder, and targeted by the Dominion Sect, Patrick has to face a past full of lies to regain his freedom. Revealing the truth means he'll need to give up the life that has defined him. Everything he's fought to build with his pack is at stake, and losing them isn't a price Patrick is willing to pay, but some choices aren't his to make.
Jono knows they can't cede any more territory if they want to win the god pack civil war spilling into the streets of New York City. But the souls of werecreatures are free for the taking when demons come to town and angels sing a warning no one can ignore. When Jono's worst fear comes to life, and he loses the one person he can't live without, the only option left is to fight.
Facing down the demons of their past and the ones in their present, Patrick and Jono will learn the hard way that some sins never wash away clean.

I need more stars and time to process the total head rush that makes up this book's story!
Every time I read a new entry in this series from Hailey Turner, I have to take a breath to absorb what she's just blown my mind away with.
Book Six is no exception, in fact, it's probably the most complex so far in all the Soulbound books as there are a multitude of big WTF moments that I won't be spoiling at any point in this review 😁
As the tension builds in this penultimate chapter of the series long arc, we find Patrick and Jono dealing with an escalation of attacks against their pack while trying to chase up the missing Morrigan's Staff (this book picks up almost immediately after On the Wings of War with Ashanti's return still at the forefront.
As with all the other utterly brilliant books in this series, Hailey mixes mythologies with a deft hand, bringing the Egyptian pantheon into the mix, as well as the lesser known Hawaiian War God Kū and his Nightmarchers.
This is one of the aspects of the Soulbound series I love the most. I am a mythology nerd and I freely admit it, but my knowledge is mostly related to the most commonly found pantheons - Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian, 'Celtic', South American etc - so I am always delighted when someone new pops up to give me another rabbit hole to fall into.
As for Patrick and Jono, and the rest of the gang, things are as complicated as ever but the strength of the bond between them is solid. The way Patrick and Jono's relationship has developed throughout this series is another solid thread which binds the narrative together.
They are each other's lodestone, and both are forced to call on that certainty at points during this book where I wasn't sure if they'd get through unscathed. Hailey is so good at driving an escalating sense of foreboding where you're really not sure everyone you love is going to make it.
Here she drives the tension to the extreme and that's why, once I picked up this book, I didn't put it down until I had finished it, the plot was simply too captivating to let loose and I couldn't bear to wait to find out whether everyone comes out at the other end.
Emotionally, this book holds the reader captive from the start, we are taken through a multitude of different highs, lows and all points in between, before being flung out at the end with a exhale of mixed relief and disbelief at just where the narrative has ranged.
Book Seven will be both an anticipated release and a bittersweet one as I am sure there will be more pain to endure and joys to celebrate before Patrick and Jono can safely take a breath and go on that vacation to Maui.
And I cannot wait!
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
You betcha I dropped everything to read this book.
It’s the second to last book in an amazing MM urban fantasy series. And I already feel the goodbye coming, it will be bittersweet.
From the very first book I fell in love with Patrick and Jono. Their pack. The friendships. The dynamic. The stories. This series has it all.
Actually the series combines two of my most favorite tropes/genres, MM romance as well as a fantastic urban fantasy. It’s rare to get both in one. That’s why the Soulbound Series will always have a special place in my heart.
What can I say about this book without spoiling it?
Not much!!
An Echo in the Sorrow is a continuation of the last five books. The main plot is coming to a close soon, but before that Patrick and Jono had to do some house cleaning in their city.
Also the cooperations between the different fractions is a great omen for what’s to come. Because the BIG fight is just around the corner. In the end, the author did a marvellous job of bringing certain aspects of the book to the forefront and clearing them up before the crew is facing the BIG showdown.
It’s not an understatement when I say that the tension is high in this book.
And I’m a bit nervous going into the seventh and last book. Of course I hate that it all has to end. And it’s a lot to process. But I have faith in the author. I have a feeling it will be EPIC!!
As always I devoured the book. Thanks to fantastic writing, captivating plot development, and absolutely fantastic characters. I adored every big and small interaction between my favorite characters. It’s always meaningful and makes me smile.
It’s hard not to love this series and band of characters. So if you are in the market for soma awesome MM URBAN FANTASY – this is your series!!

What a book, I think from book 5 until the end is where all the action happens and where it really is hard to put down!
Sad that the next book is the last, but hey only a few more months until Wades book, which is honestly a dream come true!

There was so much that happened in this book that you don't want to put it down.
but still T-3months until the final book of the series!!!
4.5 stars April 2021
This series man, each books gets better and better and the things they have to go through, it’s like watching a movie.
The world building in all of Hailey Turners books is flawless and I can’t believe I have to wait until OCTOBER before the final book comes out! But that leaves more time for me to reread the whole series before then!
Don’t worry Wade is still killing it being my favorite character with his sassy self!
********************** Original review March 2021:
***4.5 - 5 ❤️***
*wheeeeeeeeeze*
That.... that... was one hell of a ride with a dash of WTF-moments *side-eyes Patrick*, meddling of old gods, new gods, known gods and never-heard-of gods (umm, with that I mean me) and quite some heart-squeezing feelz. Oh, and a once again adorbs cookie monster – aka Wade – I would adopt on the spot if I wouldn’t end up dead broke. ;-)
Whew, well that story stressed me out!! Poor Patrick and Jono are put through the ringer with this one. They are getting hit from the meddling gods, the law and of course the other New York pack. They also have to deal with all that plus Patrick’s past comes into play.
I listened to the audiobook, and once again, Gary Furlong did an amazing job. He has distinct voices for each character, my favorite is Jono’s voice, of course.
For some strange reason, I thought this was the final book and I started to panic because there are the so many loose ends that hopefully will all be wrapped in in the book 6. We just have to wait until October
Hailey Turner's newsletter says "this is a rollercoaster of a book" and she "put the Pack through the wringer"? And the other books weren't? *side-eyes book* 👀
*edit*
Now, that I've read, thanks for the warning Hailey! 😭 Despite all the divine interventions on Patrick's behalf, thank all the gods for Jono. Because this last situation might have shredded Patrick if not for Jono there to anchor him, and his Pack behind that.
I love this series, every bit of it. All the gods and goddesses of all different mythologies, the magic, the fae, all the supernats, vampires and shifters and demons. The world is complex and complicated, rich in legend and characters. And Hailey Turner balances it all flawlessly. The narrative never misses a beat and the action and battles are realistic and breathless.
But most of all, I love Patrick and Jono, how they have grown together, seeing Patrick go from being so bitterly, utterly alone and mistrustful of the world to where he is now. With Jono, whose faith and love for him is unwavering, and his Pack, who all support each other just the same way. In addition to that, they are all genuine, legit badasses and I love it so much!! 😍😍
And it must be repeated, every time, that Wade remains my favorite teenage fire dragon shifter ever. *gives Wade a case of strawberry poptarts* 🥰
I am so looking forward to the next book, knowing what is finally coming, while also not, as it's the last book in the series! 😢😢💔However sad that might be, there's no doubt it's going to be a bone-rattling, epic conclusion, I cannot WAIT!!
4.5 stars. I am so glad that I have come across this series at a time when it’s been released as a whole cause the idea of needing to wait for installments would have literally had me pulling my hair out.
I mean, does this continue to be a little bit ridiculous, yeah it absolutely does lol, but that’s also where the charm and fun of it is for me (did we really need to add angels into the mix lol? As if we don’t have enough going on already).
I do feel like the synopsis was a little misleading. I was dreading that there was going to be some sort of angst storyline of Patrick wanting to be self sacrificial and leave the pack but I should have known better. Patrick and Jono are so unreservedly devoted to each other that they would never let the other one go. I completely adore their relationship and the heart that it lends this series but I do feel like the romantic subplot has dropped off a little bit in the last book or two in order to allow for the larger story plot, which I understand, but I do miss it a bit. Or maybe they’ve just been through so much now I want them to be able to just cuddle and be happy forever in peace.
The pack dynamics and the god pack war have often been some of favourite storylines across these books and I’m very satisfied with how that played out. Fuck Estelle man, she’s the literal worst.
I am equal parts excited and sad to be moving into the final part of this story. I feel like I have gone through a whole journey with these characters and I feel a kind of grief with it coming to an end. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Turner sticks the landing with the final book 🤞🏻
What a spectacular adventure, the action scenes are so good, the mystery, the surprises, it was thrilling, I was hooked from the start, the characters are so intriguing, the good and the bad, the main characters remain lovely although I really want to give a good shake on Patrick...
I was at the edge of my seat almost the entire book, congratulations toHailey Turner!!!
I have this book on Audible too, another marvellous performance from Gary Furlong, he's really talented, I absolutely appreciate his ability to do different voices to many characters, the acting was on point, I was very pleased!!!
It’s like this series was tailor made for me. Seriously, it has it all: mm romance, werewolves, vampires, dragons, the fae, romance that started slow but only grew in intensity, and I am so here for it, the same couple through the series, adventure and mystery + all the gods from all the pantheons from all mythologies coexisting within the same universe.
But honestly, this has been the most anxiety inducing book in the series so far. There was no respite for my poor god pack. I don’t even know who was more worried about the wedding, me or Sage. And not only that, but the gods were constantly meddling and the FBI and the police were extremely annoying. For a moment it felt like everything that could go wrong happened, and I doubted they could solve it all. This would have ended my sanity. Also, I haven’t forgiven you Casale!
1. Fast paced 2. Action packed 3. Jono 4. So many Feels 5. Wade and his stomach 6. Jono 7. Patrick being stupid but that's oka. 8. All the gods and goddesses 9. Jono 10. The worldbuilding
4/7/2021: Waiting for audio was the right call. Patrick and Jono's relationship continues to develop. Wade is really growing up and I adore their found family. I want to sit with this book for a bit before I write a proper review.
Some fuckery is happening with other people rating this low before it's even out. This is one of my top favorite series so I'll just five star before I inevitably read this book, love it and rate it five stars legitimately.
[edit: it's December 23rd and I want this book so bad but I also know I'm probably gonna wait until audio cause Gary is so good! T_T
edit: it's January 31, the cover is amazing and the ARC reviews are coming in and it's looking really good! I'm keeping my rating here because I've never rated a Hailey Turner book less the 5 stars and I don't anticipate it happening here.]
I’m always in awe of Hailey’s talent, but this book just blew me away. It’s so brilliant. All the components you expect from her stories are amplified by a thousand percent. I loved the witty dialogue and banter, the bond between pack and chosen family, the action scenes, the amazing lore and legend she wove into every page, and her ability to write multidimensional villains. It just left me breathless. I cannot wait until series fans get their hands on An Echo in the Sorrow.
I always feel a little sorry for Patrick. The guilt and the weight he carries with him. Here his past, his life and his secrets are exposed. And I have to wonder if he’ll ever catch a break? The final book ending with him and Jono on a Caribbean beach would be a nice start. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Estelle has upped her game and she’s determined to force Jono out of New York. So Jono and Patrick face more attacks on their pack and themselves.
As always there’s an abundance of gods and mythological creatures. This is action packed but it works. I’ve complained before the balance was out (A Crown of Iron & Silver) but here I was glued to every page.
As always my favourite character was Wade. I just love him but I’m glad I don’t have to pay his food bill.
This is a fabulous book and I can’t wait for the next and final one.
8/24/2021 reread. Now I am all caught up and ready for the grand finale. Can't wait!!!
Hailey Turner is back and is at her finest. The story has everything I wanted: unexpected plot twists, meddling gods, love and devotion and fantastic finale that kept me on the edge of my seat with nerves and excitement. Witty entertaining banter, diverse cast of characters and some serious action scenes full of magic and fighting for their lives made this a very enjoyable story.
We hit the ground running, and the story never lets up its intensity. Patrick and Jono really show how strong two people in love can be surrounded by friends and family. Their adventures keep them on home turf but they do not lack danger or variety. It's never boring in casa de Vere-Collins.
It's hard to say anything without stumbling into spoiler territory. One thing is for certain. It will get a lot worse before it gets truly horrible. But there is always a way out, and Jono, Patrick, Sage and Wade will always make it to the other side. Can't wait to read how Ms Turner finishes this series. It sure will be EPIC. Copy received for my honest and unbiased review.
Wow!! 4.5 Stars in this penultimate book in the series.
There is lots going on here, but Turner does a fantastic job of reviewing the main plot points in case it’s been a while since you read the last book.
So...the fight for the NYC Alpha God Pack comes to a head with some crazy fights.
More gods come on the scene & it’s anyone’s guess as to whose side they are one.
There is a wedding to plan. Fenrir wants to come out to play. A murder charge locks up one of the alphas. A missing god has the fae on alert. Hermès keeps popping up. Wade keeps eating. Gargoyles!! And more....
This is definitely NOT a stand-alone by any means.
My rec? It’s such a good series!! I ADORE hard-headed Jono and Patrick ❤️❤️
An Echo in the Sorrow is now my favorite book in the series, thank you! So many things I wanted to see from the moment I started the series happened in this book. There was one very big plot conflict that stretched across all 6 books that got solved here and it was everything! I needed and more. I am so beyond happy with how Turner developed everything sldfjsldfjlsf h e l p
I loved every single bit of this book from start to finish. I read it in one sitting, as always, and had no regrets. There was so much tension and action and the stakes were so!! high!!! that it was impossible to put the book down. Pretty much all of the big players were present and had something to do that either made me cheer or frustrated me to no end. I loved it!
You all know I didn't have the best time with On the Wings of War because it felt like a big filler that didn't add anything that important to the series? Which in hindsight was still mostly true, but it did serve as a stepping stone for some huge reveals that happened here. When I thought the series was aimless, An Echo in the Sorrow showed me Turner knew exactly where she wanted to go and how she wanted things to happen.
It was very obvious that Turner worked to resolve some of the big conflicts in the series so she could turn the characters to the final showdown that's supposed to happen in the next book. I am so! tense! regarding that because An Echo in the Sorrow was already such an Experience for me.
And the ending was super sweet, please. Patrick and Jono have overcome so much and they're grown together as people and in their relationship and the final scene with them was such a sweet and lovely moment between the characters that I had to stop and lie down for a bit.
Everything about this book worked for me.
*
Series: #6 in the Soulbound series. Beings: Werecreatures, magic users, vampires, dogs, demons, and more! POV: Told from Patrick and Jono's POVs. Content Warnings: Steam: A few steamy scenes! Cliffhanger: No. HEA: Up Next: the final book, A Veiled & Hallowed Eve.
That was some edge of seat reading, right there! We need to wrap Patrick and Jono in some nice, fluffy cotton and hide them away! Holy moly! I cannot wait for the next (and last) book!
This series is simply brilliant. And every book proves it.
I hadn't read a book in this series for a while and I missed those characters, especially Jono and Patrick. I like how the author balances their POV. Both of them are always involved in any story, and we spend practically the same amount of time with each of them. At this stage, I can't say which one I like more. It was wonderful to see them working together again.
This series is getting darker and darker and the stakes are really high. Patrick finds it increasingly difficult to reconcile his role in SOA with being Jono's partner as he fights for leadership of the shapeshifters in New York City. It will be especially noticeable in this book.
Again, I really enjoyed that Patrick and Jono work together and support each other all the time. There are no serious conflicts between them. Whatever the situation, they are always together. There is something in it that warms your heart.
I look forward to the next book in this series. Apparently, this will be the last one, it will be difficult to part with these characters.
I don’t think I realized this was the calm before the storm.
Calm. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAAA.
No. There was nothing calm about this book but still, I didn’t realize there was only one more book in the series until I started writing this review.
I almost feel better about what I just read with that knowledge.
Almost. This was a lot and with what is to come, well, it’s only fair that that should be all that is left for them to deal with. And hey, let’s be fair, yeah? Please?
The last book overly exhausted me. I was so tired for me and for them. It was just too much too fast and it felt like it never let up.
This book didn’t exhaust me because there wasn’t any time to get tired or be tired. There wasn’t any time for anything except the next battle and there were so many. Secrets were revealed. Storylines were wrapped up. New faces as well as old. Pain, pain and more pain.
This one drove me to drink.
From the first page, once this book started it did not let up. One thing after another, faster and faster with what felt like not a single breath in between them.
Maybe I am a little exhausted now that I can actually breathe again.
My God Patrick. I am sure I’ve said this before and believe me, I know I’ll be saying it again, but it bears repeating, I don’t know how he is still standing. I hurt so much for him. Jono says it best and it sums it all up. “He was a fucking child”. God. What a relief that he finally has a home but I can’t even think about when he didn’t really. I also can’t think about the threat to it.
Jono. What a rock. His calm. His strength. His compassion. He’s just and he’s logical and he’s the perfect compliment to Patrick and it just grows and grows and grows. Get ready Jono.
So yeah. Pretty much exactly what you would expect from this series and more. With a hint of too much but also a hint of relief because the end is near. Even though I know it is going to be really, really, REALLY bad all of this was inevitable. It was bound to happen. It was fate after all.
I’ll be resting until then. I hope they all do the same.
Congratulations to the happy couple!!! Thankfully there was a soft and beautiful place to land at the end.

This series is still absolutely blowing me away! I seriously love it so much!
I love Patrick and Jono (oh Jono, how I love thee ❤️😍) All of the supporting characters are amazing.
I'm about to start book 7, the final in this series (but not the last in this universe). I really, really don't want this to end. I'm going to be lost.
Also, a massive shout out to the narrator! I've listened to all of these on audiobook, and he has been amazing with his different voices and different accents. I'm glad I'm listening to these, because if I was reading them myself, I don't think I'd be able to pronounce most of the God names. lol
"An Echo in the Sorrow" was truly, utterly, stunning. I know I've said this for every single one of this series' books, but I'll say it again: Hailey Turner is a master storyteller and each book has left me both speechless and screaming incoherently. This one, in particular, has such a distinct atmosphere: dark and painful at times, melancholic and bittersweet, but it's also teeming with love and sweetness and pride.
All of the characters go through the wringer this time around, but Patrick especially has to deal with the lies and secrets that have kept him alive all these years and that are threatening his relationship, his pack and his reputation. I know I'm being redundant but I love him so much: he's truly one of the protagonists I've adored most these past few years, a mix of fragility and toughness, ruthlessness and snark, pain and fierce protectiveness for the family he's finally found. I also loved Jono with my whole heart during this book: I've always adored him, but he's truly something fierce and furious here. Sage and Marek, Leon and Emma, Wade and his bottomless stomach, were fabulous as usual, and I loved seeing some new, and old, faces too. Ashanti, especially: her relationship with Patrick was interesting (to say the least), and I cannot wait to see a bit more of her. Book #7 is too far away for my heart to cope but for the next few months I'll try to survive be re-reading this series, A LOT.
THIS BOOK??? This was THE MOST action-packed of all the Soulbound books so far that had me guessing what could possibly happen next, and it had me sobbing by the end (but for good reasons). Rest assured this book does end with a HFN but it is a VERY hard fought road to get there and we still have one more book, one more epic showdown to go!!!
The rest of this review will be as spoiler-free as possible for this book, but will reference things that happened in previous books.
Trigger warnings include graphic violence, demonic possession with and without consent, torture, kidnapping, forced pregnancy (by a fertility god in a previous book), and dismemberment.
A lot happens in this book!! For anyone needing a refresher of what leads up to this book...there’s Estelle and Youssef (the other New York City god pack) making alliances no matter the cost in order to get Patrick and Jono out of the way, Ilya has control creating an army of the undead, Ethan and the Dominic Sect are still a threat because he wants to become a god, and Jono’s dire, Sage, and the seer billionaire Marek are engaged to be married. So, yeah. There’s a lot going on.
I loved seeing how all the pieces that have been laid out in the previous books are coming together, even if everything gives me anxiety. I just want everyone to be happy and for Patrick to finally get his vacation! Is that too much to ask? But until then, Patrick and Jono have a heck of a lot to do to clean up the gods messes. Patrick has been a pawn in their game for years and this book proves that all the gods have chosen their sides, and it’s getting really ugly.
This book is intense in all the right places, but still allows for some breathing room with some snark and levity at just the perfect moments. Wade is still a darling and I love him to pieces!!! Not that other characters don’t also need to be protected, but I would love it if Wade suffers no more trauma. He’s so young and he’s already been through so much! After this book too, I think Patrick might be right there with him. Patrick is put through the wringer even more than usual but I do love that the pack, this found family of his, can help him heal (along with his therapist).
The whole situation with Ethan and Patrick’s twin sister, Hannah, is just...a LOT. I think I’ll talk more about this when the series is done? I don’t want to spoiler too much right now but it’s something I definitely want to dive deeper into.
The next book (and last!) will certainly be interesting in not only how everything gets resolved but what life will look like for the pack and their alliances after. I’m kinda rooting for Wade to have his own book with his own HEA and even for Spencer to have a polyam book with Lucien and Carmen because I feel like I need it!! Everyone deserves happiness. Even beings who live to irritate Patrick but still begrudging help him.
If I had to give one critique, the one thing that confuses me the most in this series is Ginnungagap. Like, I get the definition of it in the context of this book but I don’t GET it? How does it work? It’s a place but not a place? What’s it even doing (or maybe not doing because it’s...controlled??) at the last fight in this book? I don’t understand it. It’s confusing no matter how much I try to understand.
There are new gods in this one! They don’t play a huge role like we’ve seen new gods do in previous books, but it was nice seeing some new myths and characters, no matter what side they’re on.
There are certainly characters I love who I worry about not surviving the next book just because they’re not the main characters and that means they’re fair game to be killed off. I desperately hope my faves will all survive, but I’ve never read how Hailey Turner finishes her long book series and I AM SCARED. I’ve been left disappointed too much these past few months with other book series and their endings. Maybe I should hurry up and read her Metahumans series to get a better idea? That series also sounds very good.
All in all, I loved this book!! Pro-tip, when you get to the last chapter and the song that’s listed as playing at that moment right there on the page? I suggest pulling it up and listening to it while you read those last few pages. It gives the story ambiance and definitely had me sobbing from all the feels. I adore Patrick and Jono and they’ve been through so, SO much in the year they’ve met each other! I can’t wait to read what else is in store for them after the events of this book and to see if they get their much needed vacation to Maui. I am definitely planning on re-reading all the books before the last book when it comes out!!!
*** Thanks to A Novel Take PR for providing me an ARC for review!***
Today, Jay and Kris are continuing their Buddy Review of Hailey Turner’s fabulous Soulbound series. An Echo in the Sorrow is the sixth (and second to last) book in the series and continues a series-long storyline, so you are best to start at the beginning with this one. This review will also naturally reveal some plot points from earlier books.
Read Jay’s and Kris's review in its entirety here.
I've given this an A- for both content and narration at AudioGals.
Note: The Soulbound series features a number of overarching plotlines, so this book is unlikely to make much sense unless you’re familiar with at least some of the previous entries in the series. There are likely to be spoilers for those in this review.
Following their battle royale against a zombie army in Paris, An Echo in the Sorrow finds Patrick and Jono back in New York and facing danger much closer to home. There are two major plotlines running throughout the Soulbound series, one related to the growing tensions between the New York City god pack and the rival god pack led by Patrick and Jono, and the other to the ever-present threat posed by the Dominion Sect, a cult dedicated to destroying the veil between worlds and literally unleashing hell upon Earth.
An Echo in the Sorrow focuses on the first of those storylines as the corrupt New York City god pack led by Estelle Walker and Youssef Khan steps up its campaign to destroy Patrick and Jono and all the were-creature packs that have placed themselves under their protection. Estelle and Youssef don’t care what they have to do or who they have to kill in order to maintain control; Patrick and Jono suspect that they may have allowed demons into their souls, just as they discovered had happened in the London god pack, but even if they haven’t gone that far, they have certainly allied themselves with agents of evil, from the Krossed Knights, hunters of anything supernatural, to the Great Marquis of Hell – and possibly the Dominion Sect itself.
The attacks on Jono escalate – an ambush by demon-possessed hunters armed with aconite-dipped silver bullets, hell-bombs thrown at Tempest (the bar where Jono works in the building that acts as a kind of HQ for pack business) and a devastating assault on the subway by the Marquis of Hell and his demons… the city is unprepared for a civil war on this scale and Estelle and Youssef’s god pack is doing everything possible to make it look as though they’re the victims and paint Patrick and Jono as the bad guys.
Tensions in the city are running higher than ever, and Patrick and Jono realise that they can’t bide their time anymore and they have to strike back. But before they can advance their plans, they receive the news that Youssef Khan has been found dead – the murder weapon – the trishula of Shiva – still protruding from his chest. Just a few days before, Patrick had been assigned to investigate the theft of the trishula – a minor artefact – from the Met, and his boss assigns him the murder case. Patrick knows should recuse himself – his being co-leader of a rival pack creates a horrible conflict of interest – but he has deliberately kept the knowledge of his links with the supernatural community a secret from his boss at the SOA – and if he steps down, his being pack will become a matter of public record, and the anonymity he’s managed – to a degree – to maintain for the past two decades will be shattered.
Hailey Turner really knows how to turn the screws in her stories; you’ve just finished biting your nails down to the elbow while characters you’ve come to know and love are put through the wringer, and just when you think things can’t possibly get any worse – they do. And then some.
We hit the ground running in this one, and the dizzying pace doesn’t let up until the end. The phrase “never a dull moment” was never so true; it seems that not a chapter passes without our heroes having to face off against something monstrous, or getting yet more bad news; it had me breathless and on the edge of my seat, but I loved it, blowing through the audio in two or three sittings and having to really force myself to stop so I could get some sleep.
I expect the next book – the final one in the series – is going to bring the long-awaited mother-of-all confrontations between Patrick, Jono and their allies, and Ethan Greene and the Dominion Sect – but in no way is An Echo in the Sorrow a placeholder or filler. Ms. Turner keeps the action going and the excitement buzzing as she works to bring one of the series’ major conflicts to a close while at the same time keeping the emotional stakes high for her characters (and listeners). Jono and Patrick continue to grow as a couple and as individuals; they’re both ready to step up, lead and defend in a way they weren’t quite before, and Patrick is coming to terms with more of the painful aspects of his past. Through six books, the author has skilfully manoeuvred a very large cast through an incredibly complex panoply of storylines and created ambitious and detailed action scenes, but has never lost sight of the importance of character and relationship development. While the romantic elements of this story are described in the books’ synopses as a “subplot”, the honesty and depth of the love between Patrick and Jono that has so clearly become their mainstay permeates this novel and is an essential element of the overall story. These guys aren’t the demonstrative, hearts and flowers type – Patrick hasn’t even been able to bring himself to say The Words yet – but there’s no question they wouldn’t die for one another if they had to. (After what she did to Jamie and Kyle (In the Requiem) I’m kind of dreading what Ms. Turner is going to put Patrick and Jono through in the finale!)
Gary Furlong is a one-man cast of thousands. (Or at the very least a cast of… er… lots). He gives voice to demons, vampires, angels, witches, fae, werewolves, gods, a dragon – and a few humans, too, all of them distinct and a really good fit for the type of character, such as gravelly menace for the demons and deep booming tones for the angels. His portrayals of Patrick and Jono are, as I’ve said before, perfect; they’re such vibrant, well-rounded characters, and he captures all the different facets of their personalities incredibly well while also bringing out the depth of the emotional connection between them. The many recurring characters are performed consistently from book to book – I especially love his interpretation of Wade – and I continue to enjoy the way he conveys the warmth and camaraderie that exist so strongly among Patrick and Jono’s found family/pack.
An Echo in the Sorrow is a terrific penultimate instalment in what has been a consistently exciting and entertaining series. The conclusion to this particular part of the overarching plot is brilliantly executed; tense, emotional – even devastating – and I lapped it up, perched (metaphorically!) on the edge of my seat and happily ignoring whatever was going on around me. Gary Furlong delivers another impressive performance, proving once again that he’s one of the best narrators around. If you enjoy Urban Fantasy and haven’t tried this series yet, my advice would be to go back to the beginning with A Ferry of Bones & Gold.
