When I looked at this book's table of contents and compared it to the book's pages/locations, I was surprised at the number of topics discussed. It isn't simply about muscle building exercises as you might think, though he does get to that—to a limited degree—later in the book. He touches on a variety of topics that could affect muscles and muscle training, like how muscle building works, sleep, nutrition, recovery, and progressive overload. Some of this discussion feels a little tangential to the central topic of building muscles for beginners. As he does cover so many topics, some subtropics only get a couple of sentences or paragraphs. Unfortunately, sometimes the author did not actually discuss the subtopic under its heading. For instance, under the subheading about how muscle building can help strengthen bones and ligaments, he doesn't really discuss that at all. Instead, he talks about how having strong muscles can help take pressure off of joints while running. Nothing whatsoever about strengthening bones are ligaments! In the section where he talks about the different types of muscle-building exercises, he doesn't actually tell how to do them or variants of them. Rather, he just talks about them in general and includes potential pitfalls. That was a disappointment. In many sections of the book, the author makes a lot of claims about exercise and nutrition but doesn't back them up with any scientific studies. In many places, he seems to just be toeing the standard gym rat line, stating what is often heard in exercise circles. Finally, this book does not seem to be as beginner oriented as the title suggests. Many times, he references other types of athletes regarding muscle building. What about the rest of us… you know, the true beginners? All in all, I found myself somewhat disappointed by this book.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
If you are new to this activity or to nutrition, this book is spot on. Sound nutrition advice, recommendations for types of lifting and how to implement cardio and lifting to optimal health.
