Objective of this book is to get the topic sex out of closet. It covers how sex is currently experienced by men and women in general, problems with it and how it can be addressed by communicating it with the partner. This book has captured several debatable aspects of love, marriage and sex like possessiveness, extra marital affairs, masturbation, going beyond trust, male ego, value system,importance of sex education and the consequences of keeping sex as a taboo topic.

First few chapters is male bashing (author gives disclaimer that there are exceptions), next few on harsh reality of how men and women experience sex, few more on ranting about Indian society and value system, last few on way forward. This book is not a work of science and purely author’s opinion. For people who are deeply connected to the so called value system, some content of this book would be highly unacceptable.

I would suggest to read this book as I think it will be helpful for a happy marriage in long run.

மனிதன் மட்டுமன்றி இந்த உலகில் உள்ள அனைத்து உயிரினத்திற்கும் அடிப்படை தேவையாக காமம் உள்ளது. உணவு உடை இருப்பிடம் எப்படி தேவையோ காமம் அதே போல தேவையாக இருக்கிறது. காமம் ஒரு காலத்தில் இந்த சமூகத்தில் சாதரண விஷயமாக இருந்துள்ளது. ஆண் உறுப்பை (லிங்கம்) சாமியாக வணங்குவதையும் கோவில் சிற்பங்களில் உடலுறவு குறித்த சிற்பங்கள் இருப்பதையும் நாம் பார்க்க முடிகிறது. உயிர்களின் பிறப்பிற்கு காரணமாக இருப்பதால் காமம் கடவுளாக பார்க்கப்பட்டிருக்கலாம்.

ஆனால் தற்போதைய சூழலில் காமம் கெட்ட வார்த்தையாகவும் அது பேச கூடாத விஷயமாகவும் ஆகிவிட்டது. அதன் பலன் காமம் சார்ந்த அறிவை அதிக மக்கள் பெறாமல் போய்விட்டோம். அதனால் இங்கு யாருமே காமத்தை சரியாக அணுகுவதில்லை. பெண் ஒரு காமத்திற்கான பொம்மையாக ஆக்கப்பட்டதும் இதன் விளைவாகத்தான். பல வீடுகளில் பெண்களின் உணர்விற்கு மதிப்பு இல்லாமல் தனது கழிவை வெளியேற்றும் கழிவறையை எப்படி உபயோகிக்கிறார்களோ அப்படியாக தங்கள் வேட்கையை தனித்து கொள்கிற ஒரு கழிவறையாக பெண்களை பயன்படுத்தும் நிலை இந்திய சமூகத்தில் உருவாகியுள்ளது. எனவே தான் புத்தகத்தின் பெயர் கழிவறை இருக்கை. காமம் சார்ந்து பெண்ணுக்கும் ஆணுக்குமான புரிதல் வரும் வரை இந்த நிலை மாறுவது கடினம்.

வெளிநாடுகளில் பாலியல் கல்வி என பள்ளி காலங்களிலேயே இந்த விஷயங்கள் பயிற்றுவிக்கப்படுவதால் காமம் அங்கே சாதரண விஷயமாக மாறிவிடுகிறது. ஆனால் காமம் தவறு என கூறப்படுகிற நாட்டிலே குழந்தைகளை கற்பழிக்கும் நிகழ்வு தொடர்ந்து நடைபெறுகிறது. காமத்தின் மீதுள்ள தவறான பார்வையே அந்த குழந்தைகளையும் அதுக்குறித்து பேச விடாமல் செய்து விடுகிறது.

நாமே காமம் தவறு என கூறும்போது நமது குழந்தைகளுக்கு மட்டும் அதை பற்றிய அறிவை கொடுக்கவா போகிறோம். காமம் சாதரண விஷயமாக பேசப்பட வேண்டும் அது மிகைப்படுத்த கூடாது.

உண்மையில் காமம் அழகானது. அது மனிதர்களுக்கு மனுஷிகளுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியை அழிக்கிறது. அது இருவருக்கு இடையே காதலை உருவாக்குகிறது. அன்பிற்கு காமமும் ஒரு காரணமாக உள்ளது. அது உயிர்களை உருவாக்குகிறது. தவறு என சொல்ல காமத்தில் என்ன உள்ளது. காமம் ஒரு இயற்கையான உணர்வு மட்டுமே…

I picked up The Toilet Seat intrigued by its bold title and promise to challenge social taboos around sex and relationships. And while I appreciate what the author intended to do—starting a conversation around female desire, emotional honesty, and societal hypocrisy - I felt the book relied too much on provocation and not enough on depth.

The writing often feels like a rant -
more reactive than reflective. Complex issues like sexual repression, infidelity, and relationship dynamics are brushed over with broad strokes, without the nuance or emotional insight they deserve. The characters feel like extensions of the author’s opinions rather than real people with layered perspectives.

At times, it even felt preachy—like the book had already decided what’s right and wrong and just wanted to drag the reader along. For a topic this important, I was hoping for more introspection and balance, not just shock value.

I respect the attempt. It takes courage to write a book like this, especially in a society where these topics are often taboo. But for me, The Toilet Seat was more noise than substance.

I guess, that when you read this book if you open your mind to its ideas and concepts, you’re gonna find it a little bit revolutionary. This book is clearly the start of a necessary conversation and it concluded with a strong suggestion to have and encourage frank discussion of sex with whomever it concerns not just your partners, kids, adults and not just about the risks, but also about how it can be a positive thing if fully consensual, reciprocal and meaningful. And also the Struggles of being a woman, how our culture suppresses their sexual desires. "Not masculine enough" is considered the biggest insult to a man. But of course, when it comes to women Being Sexual is equally related to being a slut.

Why are there different standards for men and women?

Simone de Beauvoir தனது “the SECOND SEX” புத்தகத்தில் "பெண்கள் பிறப்பதில்லை அவர்கள் பெண்களாக ஆக்கப்படுகிறார்கள்"(One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman) என்பார்.

சமூகத்தின் அனைத்து நிலைகளிலும் பெண்கள் தாழ்வான நிலையிலேயே நடத்தப்படுகிறார்கள், திருமணம்-காதல்-காமம் என எல்லா உறவுகளிலும் இதே நிலை தான். புத்தகம் Gender Neutralஎன்று முகப்புரையில் குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தாலும் யாதார்தத்தை மூஞ்சில் அறைந்தது போல் எழுதியுள்ளார் நூல் ஆசிரியர் லதா.

சுய அனுபவத்தின் அடிப்படையில் எழுதப்பட்ட புத்தகம் என்பதால் இதில் சமூகவியல் - உளவியல்- அரசியல் என பன்மைத்துவம் கொண்ட கருத்துகள் இயல்பிலேயே இடம்பெறுகிறது. மேற்கத்திய தாராளவாத சிந்தனையாளர் எழுதியதை போன்றே நூலின் கருத்துகள் தெரிகிறது. பல இடங்களில் குற்றவுணர்வை உண்டுசெய்தது இந்நூல். அணுகுமுறையிலும் சிந்தனையிலும் மாற்றம் வேண்டும் என்பதை அழுத்தமாகவே சொல்லி சென்றது.

நூல் ஆசிரியர் தனக்கு நடந்த பாலியல் அத்துமீறல்களை குறிப்பிட்டே புத்தகத்தை தொடங்குகிறார். 30 அத்தியாயங்களை இந்நூல் கொண்டுள்ளது. ஒவ்வொரு அத்தியாயத்தை வசித்து முடிக்கும்போதும் ஒருவித தெளிவு பிறக்கிறது. எதையெல்லாம் மாற்றிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் ,எந்தெந்த முன்முடிவுகள் மறு ஆய்வுக்குட் படுத்தவேண்டும், சரி தவுறுகள் எவை எவை என்பதை எல்லாம் எளிய ஆங்கிலத்தில் புரியும் வகையில் எழுதியுள்ளார்.

செருப்பால் அடித்த உணர்வை நூலின் பல இடங்களில் அனுபவித்தேன்(ஏற்படுத்திய தாக்கம் அப்படி!!). நூலை வாசித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போதே நெருங்கிய நண்பர்களுக்கு பரிந்துரைக்க தொடங்கிவிட்டேன். நூலின் பல இடங்களில் "வாழ்க்கையில் சரியாய் நேரத்தில் தான் இந்த புத்தகத்தை வாசிக்குறோம்" என்ற எண்ணம் ஏற்பட்டது. வாசிக்கும் அனைவர்க்கும் அதே எண்ணம் ஏற்பட கூடும். காதலிப்பவர்கள், திருமணமானவர்கள், தனியாக இருப்பவர்கள் என அனைவருக்கான கருத்துக்களும் இந்நூலில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது.

காமம்(Sex) பற்றிய உரையாடல்கள் இங்கு நடக்காமல் இருபதே பல சிக்கல்களுக்கு காரணியாக அமைகிறது. அதன் மீது கட்டமைக்கப்பட்ட ரகசிய பிம்பம் காமம் பற்றிய உரையாடலை நடக்க விடாமல் தடுக்கிறது.

ரகசியத்தை தேடுகிறோம் என்று திசை மாறியும், தடம் புரண்டும் ஒரு சமூகமாக நாம் பாதிப்படைகிறோம் . காமம் பற்றிய உரையாடல் குன்றிய காரணத்தால் பாலியல் வன்முறைகள் ��திகம் நடைபெறுகிறது. அடிப்படையில் மாற்றங்களை ஏற்படுத்தாமல், குற்றங்களை நடக்கவிட்டு மேம்போக்கான தீர்வுகளை தேடுவதன் மூலம் எவ்வித பயனையும் நாம் அடையப்போவதில்லை. கல்விமுறையிலிருந்தே நாம் மாற்றங்களை மேற்கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்பதை ஆசிரியர் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் நினைவூட்டுகிறார்.

காதல் மற்றும் காமம் இடையிலான உறவாடலை பல அத்தியாயங்களில் பேசுகிறார். காதலிலும் காமத்திலும் பெண்களின் நிலையை குறிப்பிடுகிறார். “Toilet Seat” என்ற அத்தியாயம் ஏற்படுத்திய தாக்கத்திலிருந்து இன்னும் மீளவில்லை. என்னை பொறுத்தவரை இந்த நூலை ஒரு வழிகாட்டி(Guide) புத்தகமாக அணுகலாம். உறவுகளில் சிக்கல்கள் ஏற்படும்போது Reference புத்தகமாகவும் இந்நூல் பயன்படும்.

Masturbation, Possessiveness, Male ego, Desperation, Food and sex, Friendship as the basis போன்ற பகுதிகள் எல்லாம் உள்ளபடியே ஆரோக்கியமான பரிந்துரைகளை வழங்குகிறது. "Rules for a Good Relationship” என்ற பகுதியும் அனைவர்க்கும் உதவ கூடும்.

சிலருக்கு இது தகவல் தரும் புத்தகமாக தெரியலாம், சிலருக்கு உறவு சிக்கலை தீர்க்க முற்படும் வழிகாட்டி நூலாக தெரியலாம், வேறு சிலருக்கு உளவியல் புத்தகமாக தெரியலாம், இன்னும் சிலருக்கு பெண்ணியம் பேசும் புத்தகமாக தெரியலாம். எல்லாருடைய சிக்கலும் வேறானவை என்பதால் நூலின் சாரமும் அதற்கேற்பவே சென்றடையும். ஏதோ ஒருவகையில் அனைவரின் காமம்-காதல்-உறவு சார்ந்த அணுகுமுறையில் இந்நூல் மாபெரும் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும் என்பதை மட்டும் என்னால் உறுதியாக சொல்ல முடியும்.

தமிழ் மற்றும் ஆங்கிலம் என இரண்டு மொழியிலும் புத்தகம் கிடைக்கிறது. மின்னூல் வடிவிலும் கிடைக்கிறது. என் நட்பு பட்டியலில் இருக்கும் அனைவரும் அவசியம் வாசித்து பயனடையுங்கள்.

What to say??? Just mind blowing......This book goes beyond everything about sex.Certain areas in sex like women and society, desperation, affairs, secrecy, friendship, ego, love, trust, suppression, repercussions are discussed in detail. The author has shared her real life experiences to us which is a spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling...i enjoyed completely and the book made me think from a different perspectives for a healthy and happy relationship.

This book might potentially be a hard pill to swallow. It takes a hard look at our society, our current concept of marriage, love, needs (physical & emotional).
IF you are a man reading this book, it will be a "EVALO PERIYA MATHIRA" (what a huge pill!!) for you! but try going at it with a open mind, its not accusations / facts - its the author's opinions, anecdotes - we could all learn something from every experience right?
As a woman reading this book, you learn you are not alone, you are not broken, you are not cold n unfeeling, you are not a wart with unholy unethical feelings and emotions, you are not tainted from your childhood, you realize you have to educate what you want, become assertive and stand up for what you want. You may sometimes hope that you are understood and somehow the other person magically fulfill your dreams & hopes, but this book reminds us that as with all things in life it needs work and that it has to be earned.
Stephen Covey in his book "7 habits of highly effective people" responds to a person expressing his lack of feeling of love for his wife "Love her, love is a verb". When i originally read that i felt it was unrealistic, but there is a underlying truth to it. rather than saying you've lost the feelings of love, you just have to keep renewing, rekindling, rejuvenating your relationship rather than just walk away - the odds are even if you try again the chances are you wont succeed in any subsequent ones either eh?
The book itself could've been better organized, some repetitive themes / concepts, could've been short. But 4 stars since it handles a very hard topic, has the courage to call out a failure as a failure - call out marriages that are but a sham, a husk n empty souls going through life n dying frustrated never knowing there was another option out there and this is just one life.

அறிவியல்பூர்வமாகவோ, உளவியல்பூர்வமாகவோ, சமுதாயகண்ணோட்டமோ எதுவுமில்லாத குப்பை. பெண்ணியம் என்பதை முதலில் இந்த எழுத்தாளருக்கு யாராவது புரியவைக்க வேண்டும்.

பாலியல் கதைகள் போல், என் நண்பன் சொன்னான், தோழியின் தோழிக்கு நிகழ்ந்தது என்று கண்டதையும் எழுதிவைத்துள்ளார். இடையிடையே கூகுளில் கண்ட மேற்கோள்கள் வேறு.

இதுபோன்ற துறைசார் அறிவில்லாத எழுத்தாளர்களையும் புத்தகங்களையும் புறந்தள்ளுதல் நல்லது.

This book is about a topic that majority of the people in India think as taboo - S.E.X. The book aims at bringing sex out of the closet i.e. not feeling hesitant to get yourself educated on sex. You can't argue saying you get to watch videos (yes, I mean porn) online and know stuff, so why choose books which takes long time to read - particularly with respect to the subject of Sex Education. Doesn't work that way, simply because what is shown in porn is just too unrealistic.

I have been following the space of feminism, sexual freedom, marital rape, consent and harassment (#MeToo space to put it in short) for about 3 years now. But if you are new to this space and if you decide to read this book, it might sound to you like the author is male-bashing and vouches for adultery & free sex. Quite not. The book only aims at making our society debate around these topics. At the least, it recommends you to talk about these topics openly with your partner or partner-to-be and express your likes and dislikes.

The author herself gave a disclaimer that this book is not a work of Science. So for sure there are thoughts which you might disagree with. Yet, even the disagreement is a good start that would lead to gender equality in any relationship.

If you are looking forward to redefining your romantic relationships, this book is totally for you.

The author rightly states that sex is treated as a taboo topic and brings to light the ignorance surrounding sex in the Indian society both within and outside of a marriage. Unfortunately that's where my praise for the book ends. The more you read, the more you get a glimpse of the author's pessimistic view of the world and the people in it. I could not bring myself to finish the book after the author endorsed extra marital affairs. This book could have been a crisp essay. Instead it became a long rant that far overstayed its welcome.

Lot of things to be discussed and changed from what we are following till now, thanks to author for discussing more on taboo topics and need to do so..
Before marriage everyone should read this book, if not too late they can read now also to talk openly about sex and understand their spouse's needs and wants to maintain a successful relationship/companionship..

Feels a bit strange to rate a book this low, but there were probably very high expectations when I picked this one up. While the book did cover some interesting ways of looking at sex and its taboo nature in Indian society, as well as understanding gendered approaches to it, some chapters seemed to talk about things that are commonly known while a few others were a bit too liberal bordering on problematic (could be a personal opinion). So overall, this one had a few good chapters but largely didn't work for me and I strongly disagreed with some of her perspectives. The book also lacked inclusion and representation, largely discussing sex from the POV of heteronormative people.

🔆இணையத்தில் வைரலான மற்றுமொரு புத்தகம் , லதா அவர்கள் எழுதிய கழிவறை இருக்கை . புத்தக வாசிப்பு வட்டத்தில் ஏறக்குறைய அனைவரும் எனக்கு பரிந்துரை செய்த புத்தகம் . அனைவருக்கும் பிடித்திருக்கிறதே எனக்கு பிடிக்குமோ , என்னும் அச்சத்துடன் தான் இந்த புத்தகத்தை வாங்கினேன். முதல் சில பக்கங்களிலே , என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்த புத்தகம் ஆகி விட்டது .

🔆உடலுறவில் பெண்களின் விருப்பத்தைக் கேட்பாமல் இருப்பதெல்லாம் , அந்தக் காலம் . இக்காலத்தில் எல்லாம் அப்படி இல்லை , என்று சொல்கிறவர்களுக்கு , அந்த நிலைமை அப்படியே தான் தொடர்கிறது என்பது தான் உண்மை . “ஆண்” ஆக பிறப்பதே ஏதோ பெரிய சாதனைப் போலக் காட்டிக் கொள்ளும் சமூகத்தில் நாம் வேறு என்ன எதிர்ப்பாக்க முடியும் . கடந்த வருடம் , மலையாள மொழியில் வெளிவந்த The Great Indian Kitchen படம் இதற்கு சரியான உதராணம் .

🔆பொதுவாக எழுத்தாளர்கள் கூறும் அனைத்து கருத்துகளிலும் நமக்கு உடன்பாடு இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற அவசியம் இல்லை . ஆனால் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தில் கூறிய அனைத்து கருத்துகளுடன் நான் உடன்படுகிறேன் .

🔆“பாலியல் கல்வி “ என்பது இணையருக்கு இடையில் எவ்வாறு பாலியல் உறவு கொள்வது என்பதன்று . தன் உடலையும் எதிர் பாலின உடலையும் புரிந்துக் கொள்வதே. பெண் பூப்பெய்தி விட்டால் விழா வைக்க காட்டும் அவசரத்தை , அந்த பெண்ணின் உடலில் ஏற்படும் மாற்றங்களைக் குறித்து பேசுவதில் காட்டுவதில்லை . நான் அலுவலகத்தில் பணியாற்றிக் கொண்டிருந்த போது , சக தோழிகளுடன் பேசுகையில் மகப்பேறு மருத்துவர் என்ற வார்த்தையை உபயோகித்து விட்டேன் . நான் கொலைக் குற்றம் செய்துவிட்டதைப் போல் என்னைப் பார்த்தார்கள் . “மகப்பேறு” என்ற வார்த்தைக்கே இப்படி , எவ்வாறு உடலுறவு , பாலியல் கல்வி பற்றி பேசுவது .

🔆“பெண்ணும் சமூகமும் “ என்ற தலைப்பில் இந்திய எழுத்தாளர்களில் பலர் , பெண்களை பூ, நிலா என்று உயிரற்ற பொருட்களுடன் தான் உவமைக் காட்டியிருப்பார்கள் . பூவென்று சொல்லி சொல்லியே நம்மை கசக்கி விடுவார்கள் .

🔆எந்தவொரு உடல் ரீதியான பிரச்சனைகளுக்கும் மன ரீதியான கோளாறுகளுக்கும் , திருமணமோ, குழந்தையோ தீர்வு ஆக முடியாது என்பதை நாம் உணர வேண்டும் .

🔆எவ்வளவு காலம் ஒரு இணையர் சேர்ந்து வாழ்கின்றனர் என்பது , நல்ல திருமணத்திற்கு சான்று ஆகாது . ஒரு மனைவியோ , கணவனோ தங்கள் இணையரை மன ரீதியாகவோ , உடல் ரீதியாகவோ மட்டம் தட்டிக் கொண்டே இருந்து , 50 ஆண்டுகள் சேர்ந்திருப்பதில் என்ன பெருமை .

So called social taboo to speak about the sex. Here latha gives her writing on why we should converse about it more. Her writing is really excellent, the points she brings to floor does have a view and strong reasoning. Every person should understand themselves better in all aspects mainly sex. Marriage is a custom for living in the society. She speaks volume in this book about how it is suppressing people instead of aiding them.

I have read Latha's Toilet Seat in both English and Tamil—and the impact it had left me since. The title itself is sufficient to raise eyebrows, and what it holds within it is even more thought-provoking.
This book plunges into subjects too often left unsaid—on womanhood, lust, silence, and self. It doesn't yell, but it trembles you.

It compelled me to face the silent rules I'd unknowingly embraced and made me think intensely on how I exist, love, and speak.

Latha speaks with a bold yet empathetic voice, and the stories she tells are close and unflinching. Any reader starting to discover personal boundaries, emotional richness, and cultural double standards will love this book.

A brief read—but with a lingering resonance.

This book is a wonderful meta analysis on the most misunderstood topic of our lives. Sex.

On almost all the pages I see an ally with whom I can find resonance
with my thoughts. I wish there could have been more depth to the book. Nevertheless it's an engaging read.

Special mentions to Latha's metaphors to convey tricky topics. Mentioning the metaphor Toilet seat as excellent would be an understatement.

I have a feeling to this is going to be a seminal work which will lead to many such books in Indian context where it's a rarity.

Kudos to Latha for writing this one.

Don’t let the title throw you off, The Toilet Seat is not about bathroom hygiene (well, I actually thought the same before diving into the book). It’s about something way messier: our complicated, awkward, and often suppressed relationship with sex.

Latha dives into everything your aunties whisper about but never say out loud; masturbation, desire after marriage, and whether women actually stop wanting sex post-menopause (spoiler: they don’t). She breaks myths, calls out hypocrisy, and somehow makes it all feel like a necessary heart-to-heart.

It’s not preachy. It’s not scandalous. It’s just real about desire, relationships, and all the quiet struggles we don’t talk about enough. By the end, even the title The Toilet Seat makes perfect sense.

If you’ve ever felt like there’s more to intimacy than what we’re taught to accept, this book might just be the conversation you didn’t know you needed.

Also, I would love to watch this book turn into an episode of the TedX show someday, maybe in a humorous but needed way!

Where to start from? This book is such a gem. I'm blank as a flood of thoughts is on the edge, it is waiting to consume all the space. The words are fighting with each other to occupy the places before Instagram blocks them. Let me put it as Much as possible and the rest I'll upload it to my blog today evening.

The toilet seat talks about the odds. It screams out loud the topic whichever we say it's taboo. Starting from child abuse, parenting, polygamy, balancing life and emotions, open relationships, menopause, mental intimacy, mutually satisfying sex, individuality, and whatnot. Basically, a sex education. Few other significant titles like asexuality, and homosexuality are untouched though. Maybe Latha was not concerned about it but even those characters play a major role in reality. Due to word restrictions, I'll talk about all these topics specifically in my blog.

In the beginning, I was doubtful whether this book will keep me engaged or not because whenever I read books related to this topic either it will bore me with the repetitive content or its boorish language. Gratefully, that didn't happen. In each chapter, the author had folds something new and her writing hooked me up throughout the book.

The toilet seat is a must-read book to understand the basic knowledge about individuality and acceptance which we as 6 sense animals should know instinctively. Some of you might feel several topics are contradictory and tiggering but it is all upon each one of us that how much we want to limit our acceptance.

Open your mind before you open this book! Toilet Seat is a straight slap on the faces of men who have exploited women only for sexual needs.

While we might not concur with all the points she had put forth—especially on the front of infidelity and extramarital affairs—we are left with the thought that we might dwell on such ideas at some point in our life.

How can an egoistic mind even think of improving itself? The ego stunts his growth, and there is no scope for learning.

Let friendship be the basis for every relationship and see what wonders it does for your relationship.

The more we try to possess someone, the more we get possessed by our malevolent thoughts.

Go beyond trust. Love people and allow them to be what they are. This will, without any effort, keep the relationship alive till we are alive.

This book is sure to hit you differently. The question is whether you can take it constructively. Hoping for the future where the toilet seat would only mean the literal toilet seat and not women. Fingers crossed.
