S. R. Mallery has worn many hats in her life. Starting out as a classical/pop singer/composer, she moved onto the professional world of production art and calligraphy, followed by a long career as an award winning quilt artist/teacher and an ESL/Reading instructor. Her short stories have been published in descent 2008, Snowy Egret, Transcendent Visions, The Storyteller and Down In the Dirt. Unexpected Gifts is her debut novel. Sewing Can Be Dangerous and Other Small Threads, a collection, is due out late 2013.
S. R. Mallery has combined cozy mysteries with time travel and tarot, and she’s done it in a fun, whimsical way. The "grilled cheese sandwich" slayed me! Oh, and there are two books. It was almost Saint Patrick’s day, and I love green, so I jumped right into the second book with barely a thought that there was one before it. However, that has not impeded my enjoyment at all. I’ve been having my Echo Dot read it to me while I work on thrilling things like income taxes… The story actually helped make doing taxes bearable. Haha. Although don’t let that cause you to miss the first book. Cheers!
Fun cozy mystery that includes a lot, from poison to seizures to romance and tarot card to time travel to... I like the creativity of the author, and the point of view of the main character, Brooke. Abby the psychic time traveler is a kick, and the "detective team" of friends make it a fun read.
Abby is not at all certain that the death of a young man was due to an epileptic seizure he had while starring in a lead role in a play. None of the other actors really liked him-the director was weird to say the least and his poor mother was distraught.
Abby went to her trusty tarot cards and entered her uncles car--she was transported to Rome where she was a servant in a wealthy household. Nobody knew why she kept going back and forth there--but eventually she figured out why. With the additional help of her compadres--they were able to solve this mysterious death and the culprit was caught!!
This is an easy reading, clean cozy mystery which I am sure you will enjoy whether you read the first in the series or not (I did).
I don't normally read mystery, but I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. It had fun, romance, mystery, and suspense. I loved every second!
The book is witty and sweet with a dash of fascinating thrown in. I love the premise of learning from history to solve modern day murders. The book is well written and the plot is cleverly woven together. I love the inter-relationships between the characters, the friendships and the quirks that go along with that. There were some really humorous moments. I love Nancy’s job and the appreciation of bad amateur dramatics made me giggle. I will definitely read more in this series if there is more to come.
Creative mystery using time travel and psychic elements. Loved the interaction of the characters and how they support/complement each other. Has intrigue, mystery, humor, twists, suspense, and drama. Includes interesting Roman history.
This is the second book in the A Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery series. I haven’t read book one yet and wasn’t lost, so I’d say this could be read alone if you’d prefer. This book is the perfect example of a great cozy mystery. It short, keeps you guessing, has great characters, and leaves you disappointed because it’s over. I highly recommend this book to cozy mystery lovers!
The title and Roman twist led me to pick up this book treating me to an exceptional, engaging story. A young actor's death is ruled an accident but the gang of five feel otherwise. Brooke and Abby use their talents to uncover the truth surrounding Alex's death. I particularly enjoyed reading about the other actors thoughts and feelings about Alex providing a slew of suspects. Can the clues lie in the past? A fun, whimsical cozy mystery with a touch of Roman history that I highly recommend.
Loved this story. Has something for everyone from cat lover to happy endings to mystery to who dun it to time travel. Put them all together for a fantastic story that holds your attention from the get go.
A cute cozy that includes time travel . . . a good read that's quick and entertaining.
Poisonings in Ancient Rome, actors dying backstage at home. There's plenty of mystery here among the flashbacks to a different time and the hints of present-day romance . . . and revenge? Not to be missed, Mallery's second entry into the Brooke and Abby series is just as engaging!

When In Rome (A Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery Book 2) is a new release by Multi-Award Winning, USA Today Bestselling Author S.R. Mallery.
Having read the first in the series, Tea, Anyone? (A Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery Book 1), I was excited about reading the latest story from this author. It’s not necessary to read the first in the series to understand what’s going on, but I found it helpful to already know something about each character featured in the first book.
This is the second book in a series that features two female investigators. Brooke Anderson has a job as researcher for the local police department, and often consults with her roommate, Henry, while her neighbor Abby is a psychic who relies on intuition. Their friendship seems unlikely since Brooke is a skeptic, even when she hears that Abby has worked with other police departments, helping solve crimes.
As the story begins, Brooke and Abby are in the audience watching a play, when Alex Russo, an actor who suffers from epilepsy, drops dead during a performance, supposedly because he wasn’t taking his medication as directed. Even though the death is ruled an accident, before too long, it appears that he was murdered. There are a slew of people who disliked Alex, and many of them have secrets.
While Tony, Brooke and the other detectives interview his girlfriend, mother, the actors and director, this is where history steps in, as Abby is transported in time with her tarot cards to Ancient Rome, where another murder has been committed, which will provide clues to help solve Alex Russo’s case.
Will they be able to discover who killed Alex Russo and find out why he’d been murdered?
And then there’s that memorable kiss that Brooke shared in Book 1 with hunky detective Tony. Is there a romance coming soon between these two?
You’ll just have to read the story to find out!!
This is a fun to read story full of quirky, well-developed characters with LOTS of dry humor for some laugh aloud moments. It also features an intriguing whodunit, which makes it hard to put down once you begin reading. Add in the author’s interest in history and the engaging way it’s threaded into the story, and you have a unique cozy mystery which I highly recommend!!
When in Rome is a time-travel cozy mystery, leaping back to ancient Rome where personal and political differences are settled with a generous amount of deadly poison. S.R. Mallery has written a number of fascinating historical fiction books. In the Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery series, the storytelling tone is whimsical, yet it is underpinned by the author’s research skills and fascination with the past, which create a patchwork of clues for the case at hand.
Brooke Anderson, a researcher for the local police department, is driven by methodical logic and often consults with her roommate Henry. Abby, her complete opposite, is a psychic who relies on intuition. Together with detectives Tony and Larry, they witness the untimely collapse of a young actor, Alex Russo, who’s known to suffer from epilepsy. Even though the death is ruled an accident, suspicions persist.
While the detectives and Brooke interview his girlfriend, mother, the actors and director, Abby plays with her tarot cards and finds herself quite unexpectedly in the time of Roman Emperors. What she brings back is the smell of a particular herb, which helps sniff out the suspect in this case.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I was a beta reader for this book and enjoyed the story in both its earlier draft and its polished form.
When in Rome is the second book in the Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery series. Though I have not yet read the first book in the series, it was easy to get to know the characters and their motivations.
When a young actor drops dead during a performance, his death is ruled as a result of a medical condition, but not everyone believes that story. So, Brooke, a researcher for the local police department, and Abby, a psychic/tarot card reader, along with their handful of friends, two of which are detectives, set out to prove there’s more to Alex’s death than a life-long, fairly common and treatable, medical issue.
As they start to unravel the mystery, they discover Alex has made a lot of enemies through the years, making for a long list of murder suspects. Abby’s time travel back to ancient Rome where she stumbles upon conspiracies similar to what she and her crew are experiencing at home, offers clues to help solve the mystery.
There are two hunky detectives involved in this series. I enjoyed the tension and budding relationship between Brooke and Tony. As for Larry, my heart goes out to the poor guy. For a trained observer…well, I don’t want to give anything away, but I’m rooting for Larry to find happiness.
When in Rome is cute and enjoyable cozy mystery.
I’ve worked with SR Mallery in the past on a boxed set and instantly became a fan of the stories she weaves.
The story has so many elements. It's a cozy mystery, it's time travel, it's a bit of fascinating history, and it's just fun story telling. The lead actor in a college play dies suddenly after leaving stage. It is thought that he died from his epilepsy, but things don't quite add up. There are plenty of potential suspects. And Brooke's team is on it, along with her long time friend and his partner, who are both detectives.
This book took me a short while to figure out who everyone is. But if you haven't read the first book in the series, never fear, you will get it sorted out in no time.
I can recommend this book to almost any reader.
I was provided an Advance Reader Copy by the author. This is my honest review.
When In Rome (Brooke & Abby #2), my sixth read from author S.R. Mallery, each very different than the others (Sewing Can Be Dangerous, Other Small Threads, Tea, Anyone (A Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery Book 1), The Map Room: A Short Story and The Dolan Girls books until this 2 book series. All have one thing in common, no matter the genre you can count on a well-written, entertaining read. Narrator Ellen Quay's narration contributed to the enjoyment of the book & made the re-read very worthwhile. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
This book definitely suits it's genre - cozy characters with wholesome relationships, solving a mystery - using conventional and uncoventional means. My favourite character is still Junebug, the adorable comfort cat. If you're looking for a great way to relax for a few hours on a stormy day with hot cocoa or a hot day with cool lemonade (I'm the latter right now), then this is the right book! The writing is impeccable, the mystery is intriguing, the characters are well developed and the suspense will keep your eyes guzzling every word.
A thoroughly enjoyable story with a unusual paranormal twist. I loved the characters Brooke and Abby, the police analyst and the psychic time traveller. Great ideas, plenty of suspects all with secrets, The story is very well written and I was hooked right away. A clean, old style whodunit with a great twist.
Exciting and suspenseful read whether you are a fan of cozy mystery, historical fiction or time travel genres. Actually, I am adding humor to the genre listings because Author Mallory injects this throughout the book which comes in handy when one has so many suspects in what could be a homicide. I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Abby and Brooke are so different, but together they are a great team. Add in Henry and Junebug, and the murderers don't stand a chance. The romance in this book was a bigger part than in the first book, so if romance isn't your thing, you might not like it as much as I did.
The main characters are all interesting and multi-dimensional and that really adds to the enjoyment of this book.
What fun it would be to take a ride in that Packard. I so enjoyed the mystery trip back in time to Rome. I began this journey with Brooke and Abby in book 1 and I am so hoping there is a book 3 to expand on "my" travels, also. Great work on the research and weaving of the historical tale.
Loved this second book about Brooke and Abby as they try to solve another murder. This time Abby time travels to Ancient Rome to find clues as to the real cause of death of Alex Russo. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
Abby and a tarot card finds herself traveling in time to Rome. With connection to an accidental death at the theatre finding it may not be. These are fun and enjoy to read.
“When in Rome” by S.R. Mallery is the second book in her ‘Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery’ series, yet reads well as a stand alone even though you have not read the first in the series. It follows the pseudo-official police investigation of the murder of a young man during a theatrical production. It is not a run-of-the-mill who-done-it, however. Brooke is a researcher for the Hillside Police Department and works with two of their Homicide detectives, Larry and Tony, and the remaining two members of her crime-solving ‘gang-of-five’ are made up by a homeless man she rescued, and her rather odd neighbor, Abby. Oh, and not forgetting the feline member of the group, Junie, who’s role seems to be one of motivation and consoling. The homeless man, Henry, excels at historical investigation, whilst Abby has a unique approach: using Tarot cards, she boards her grandfather’s old Packard inside her garage, and time travels back to a period that might offer clues to resolving the present-day case!
Intrigued? I was, and thoroughly enjoyed the unravelling of the murder mystery. The time travel element might seem way out to left field, yet Abby’s trips to ancient Rome provide much useful information for the gang to identify the method used, and ultimately lead to the killer.
Author Mallery does her usual outstanding job with the characters, making each a real, three-dimensional person to the reader, who quickly finds they all, Junie included, claim their place as a reader’s favorite. The tale is also both funny and fast-paced with plenty of interesting backstory (especially due to my faux-pas of starting the series with book two) that will entertain. (I immediately read book 1, “Tea Anyone”, after finishing this one.) Very highly recommended.
This is a fun read. When In Rome (A Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery) is the second in the colorful series featuring two fascinating female investigators. Brooke Anderson works as a researcher for the local police department, and her neighbor Abby is a psychic who relies on intuition. Their friendship has occasional tension since Brooke is a skeptic who questions Abby’s approach to solving crimes. This situation leads to some laugh out loud moments.
In this second story of the series, Brooke and Abby are in the audience watching a play featuring Alex Russo, an epileptic actor who dies during a performance, supposedly because he wasn’t taking his medication. The death is ruled an accident, but it soon appears that he was murdered. Alex had enemies, and all of them have secrets. History steps in as Abby is transported with her tarot cards to Ancient Rome, where a similar murder has been committed and may provide clues. There’s also a bit of romance between Brooke and a handsome detective named Tony. This is a delightful story full of colorful characters with dry humor and an intriguing whodunit. A bonus is the author’s knowledge of history which is woven into the story. This is an enjoyable cozy mystery which I highly recommend!!
S.R. Mallery has always been one of my favorite historical fiction authors but now she’s quickly becoming my favorite cozy mystery writer as well. Brooke and Abby are back and I couldn’t be more excited! As with book one in the series, there’s a murder to investigate, but this one isn’t so clear-cut. An actor dies, supposedly from forgetting to take his medication, but soon the team realizes that he had far too many enemies among his fellow crew members and that his past wasn’t all that squeaky clean. But who would want him dead and why?
Once again, Ms. Mallery employs a time travel device that quickly transformed a cozy mystery into something even more fascinating. Through her characters’ eyes (one character - sorry, no spoilers!) we get to explore an Ancient Roman court full of intrigues and conspiracies. There will be a crime committed here too, but will it offer any clues or something else will? You’ll need to read it to find out.
Utterly compelling and full of unforgettable characters you’ll grow to know and love (or hate), “When in Rome” is an excellent continuation of the series. I already can’t wait for book 3!
When in Rome (A Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery, Book 2), by S. R. Mallery was a super satisfying read. I love books about Italy so went for this title, even though I haven’t yet read read Book 1. However, I had no trouble following the suspenseful plot and the well-drawn characters. This can be read as a standalone. There was no shortage of suspects, but I never guessed whodunnit.
I really liked the love story between Brooke and Tony and all the obstacles they faced. I liked the way the group of friends (The Gang of Five) interacted with each other to support and help solve the crime. The time-travel aspect of the book was unique: Abby was transported to Ancient Rome in her great-uncle’s old Packard with the help of her mother’s slightly faded Art Deco tarot card set. And the clues she found were relevant to the present-day murder.
I liked the dialogue and the characters’ back stories contributed to making them sympathetic. This book is a cozy mystery, time travel, and romance rolled into one. A highly-recommended quick and enjoyable read. Historians and cat lovers will especially appreciate this book.
Brooke and her "gang of fire" which includes 2 police and her niece and cousin. They are in a murder mystery which includes a back in time to the ancient Rome. I think it seems like the author blends several genres in this book. This makes it exciting. I did not read book 1 (but will now), however, you do not to get enraptured and understand the story.
Brooke and her neighbor, Abby, who is a psychic form an unusual and good team together. Brooke and Abby start out watching a play when Alex and actor drops dead during the performance. The death is ruled as accident because they claim he was not taking his medication as prescribed. However, many people did not like Alex so it does appear he was murdered.
While Brooke and her friends are interviewing various people Abby is transported in time because of her tarot cards to ancient Rome, where another murder happened. This helps to provide clues for Alex's murder.
I enjoyed this since I was in Italy and did all the ancient Rome things too.
I found this story very entertaining and highly recommend for you to read so you find out what transpires. This was a review copy but is my honest opinion.
When In Rome: This is an engaging cozy mystery for dark winter nights. Two friends, Abby, a psychic and Brooke a researcher for a police dept, pool together to solve the untimely death of an actor, Alex, who was performing on stage at the time. Although his death was ruled an accident due to epilepsy, Abby and Brooke soon realise there is far more to Alex's death than originally announced.
As the unlikely duo dig deeper they soon discover that Alex was disliked by many, complicating the road to his killer.
The authors love of history shines through as Abbey is transported ba k in time through her psychic abilities and learns some interesting information relevent to the current case. This captivating tale, with dollops of humour weaved through will grab the readers attention and keep you turning the pages until the end. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
I am usually not a fan of time travel as an element in the books I read, however, I love the Brooke & Abby series. I've read books one and two and hope to read many more. In the latest installment Brooke is attending a college drama production with her niece when the lead actor dies immediately upon leaving the stage. Now Brooke, Abby, Larry, Tony and Henry race against time, both present and past, to prove his death wasn't the result of a medical condition before someone else is killed. S.R. Mallery always write a great mystery with lots of twists. The characters are funny, flawed and very relatable. I recommend this series to anyone looking for a great mystery with a lot of fun and some history thrown in to keep you guessing.
This is a time travel cozy mystery and it was super fun to read! It’s pretty short so I finished it really fast. It’s definitely a page turner! When an epileptic actor dies of a supposed accident from not taking his medication properly, Abby and Brooke aren’t so sure. Abby plays with her tarot cards and ends up in Ancient Rome, while Brooke and the guys investigate in the present day. I really liked the mystery and it was cool how everything worked out at the end. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, this is definitely worth the read!
I received an ARC copy and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
