An interstellar epic with rich worldbuilding, great characters, and fascinating speculative science!

With "When Morpheus Overslept," Michael Scott Phillips has given readers an thrilling adventure story set in a thoroughly developed world that spans centuries and star systems. Henry, the protagonist, awakens from cryogenic sleep in an escape ejected from humanity's first interstellar vessel - only to watch the ship devoured by a life form unlike anything humanity imagined could exist in space. With help cast of engaging, complex characters - some human, some alien - he explores a post-apocalyptic world entire centuries beyond the date he expected to arrive at his destination. The story explores themes like quantum consciousness, psychic abilities and their potential to be weaponized, and the challenges of communication between multiple alien species. I was particularly blown away by the Tolkien-esque attention to worldbuilding, to include development of a full linguistics system for an alien species totally distinct from humanity. This is an excellent first novel!
