Rebecca Allen thought moving to New York City with her long-time boyfriend Benjamin was exactly what she wanted. Far away from small-town Texas and her suffocating family, she and Benjamin could begin their new life. No longer under her parents’ control, she could spread her wings and build a life with him–one full of excitement and adventure. Except she soon realizes she has only shifted control of her life to Benjamin. What’s worse, since her strict parents have disowned her for the move, she no longer has her family.
Rebecca feels terribly alone. And Benjamin is too interested in climbing the corporate ladder to notice or build a life with her. Now in this strange city, she has no friends. She has no one.
However, the day Rebecca meets Casey Evans, her life begins to change. Forging a friendship with the outgoing Casey, Rebecca slowly becomes empowered, stepping out of her shell–and with Casey’s encouragement, gaining self-confidence. But partnered with the happiness, she feels guilt. Because her new friend isn’t the female-bestie Benjamin assumes. This tiny omission soon grows into a destructive secret, and Rebecca must choose between the life she thought she wanted or the love she never imagined she could have.
I wasn't too impressed at the beginning of the book. I knew right away it was going to be an "easy" read without a complicated plot.
The main character, Rebecca, is from a small town in Texas. She graduated from the local college and has always been a naïve, good-girl type who has lived with her religious, oppressive, narrow-minded parents her whole life. Rebelling against her upbringing she has moved with her long-time boyfriend, Benjamin, to New York City as he pursues his career which, naturally, is very time consuming and sends him out of town often. He finds her a job answering phones. She wears a promise ring (on her right hand, at his request) but marriage isn't quite on the horizon. Rebecca doesn't take any initiative to explore this scary, fantastic city in which she now lives. Her parents don't take her calls and her best friend is far away in Chicago. She isn't happy but doesn't even know it... yet.
Enter Casey, a perfect male specimen. Instant attraction. But Rebecca has a serious boyfriend and doesn't want to jeopardize their relationship. Casey slowly and carefully coaxes her out of her comfort zone even as his own secrets remain buried. He can't open up to Rebecca even as their friendship reaches new levels.
The story drew me in and I really enjoyed it. Be warned, though, there are several scenes of graphic sex.
I could not stop reading this book. I felt like I was actually there, living through the adventure. It had humor, anger, frustrations and steamy romance. This author has such talent. Great storyteller!!! Can't wait to see what she comes out with next. I'm hooked!!
A psychological look at becoming an independent young woman. Reminded me of my own journey through my life experiences. It was the best. A very enjoyable experience. I loved it.
I had a hard time putting this book down. It kept me wanting to turn the page. I loved the characters and the tension throughout the book. The ending left me with a smile and wanting to read more from this author.
