✰ Reign Delaney ✰
I have to start this review with Reign Delaney. I wouldn’t say he’s the elephant in the room, but he’s something big that I took away from this book. However…… in a book that was about Callie and Kane…. I don’t think he should have been the biggest takeaway. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy and I can’t wait for him to have his own book (hopefully!) in the Boston Wolfes series. But I felt like he was half of this book. I will explain. I hope it makes sense.
Callie & Reign’s relationship
the flashback chapters
I loved Billie’s use of flashbacks in Chasing Fire. She blended Callie and Kane, interacting in the present and their first meeting, showing the fiery connection they had and the growing sexual tension they continued to have. In Catching Fire, I felt the flashbacks were to show Callie’s backstory and how her past has shaped her to who she is today. These chapters tied into Callie moving on from her past in the end of Catching Fire. The main point of Reign in these chapters was to show how strong Callie has become and how in her life, she doesn’t need anyone.
How could Reign and Callie not have a strong connection? He literally rescued her. The next 10ish flashback chapters then go on to show their relationship and I can literally feel in my soul their connection. It was really well written. The first time they had sex and what it meant to Callie? Beautiful. That’s a memory that sticks with you for life. And I love how Billie wrote that scene, making Callie so delicate yet so strong at the same time, and Reign being patient and careful with her. Billie really shows their connection in her writing, and she shows it so well that it distracts me from Kane. The chapters, and even Callie’s feelings reuniting with Reign in the present day (love that little twist!), made me feel SO guilty about loving Reign and their relationship because I felt I should’ve been more focused on Kane. Even how Billie wrote them in the present day I still felt their connection. And I get that in life there are some people who will always be tied to us whether we like it or not. Callie said their relationship just wasn’t physical anymore, but why? She never said that she wasn’t attracted to him anymore. The only thing I could really determine affecting their relationship was Reign’s secrets and his inability to share them with Callie. It felt very one sided. He also moved back to Boston. Billie more so just told us that they were friends now and lost their physical connection. But it didn’t convince me.
I understand how the flashback chapters contributed to the storyline Billie wrote. But they also felt out of place. But also, I don’t know where else they should’ve/would’ve gone in the book, or if there was a better way to show Callie’s self-journey. I liked the concept, because it was a way to show us instead of just telling us how strong Callie is. But it’s something I still don’t know how to fully feel about.
Reign
I love him. That’s all. When he gets his own book, I wonder if his time with Callie will be mentioned in his POV. He’s sweet, patient, and was so caring to Callie throughout their time together even up to the end of their relationship. In the long run, they probably would not have worked out because Reign couldn’t tell Callie anything about his past or family, and it was already causing riffs between them. But my love for him made me feel like I was cheating on Kane.
✰ Callie & Kane✰
Kane
Ah, Kane. I think I loved him even more in this book. I have no doubt of his love for Callie, which he proved through his thoughts and his actions. His feelings had really developed from Chasing Fire, and I felt all of it from start to finish. From when he wasn’t sure how he was going to feel when he finally saw her, to feeling his anger when she wouldn’t explain why she left him, to the jealousy he felt over Reign’s familiarity with her because he wanted to be the one she leaned on, to him jumping in the hot tub fully clothed to wake her up from her nightmare, to being pissed she interrogated someone while pregnant. It was really refreshing to see him be vocal about his feelings. All he wanted to do was love and protect Callie. Billie wrote him even better this time around.
Callie
I felt Billie told us more in Callie’s POV than showed (excluding flashback chapters – those were written really well). While I could feel Kane’s love, I was only told Callie’s. It was hard to believe her complete love for Kane when she was also saying that Reign and her had this undeniable connection that she would always cherish, and that she would always love him in a way. I think it was the flashback chapters that made this harder for me, because we got to see how strong Callie & Reign’s relationship started off. I don’t know how to fully describe it. I just felt that Callie told us more about how she loved Kane instead of showing us. Like I said before, I think Reign being in this book distracted me. Callie and Kane’s physical connection was still off the charts though. Like that scene in Cuba where they finally see each other again in the bar? Hot hot hot as the Cuban sun.
Callie’s journey
We really got to see Callie’s self-discovery journey throughout this book. How her past has shaped her to be who she is in the present, and how that present was going to shape her future. It was beautiful to see her overcome the hold the men in her life had on her. I could feel it building up to that last scene with Junior, and then I felt her drop in adrenaline after she shot him. Also, I love her finally doing what Reign had been saying this entire time to do.
”Do you know what the last thing is that I owe you?” I ask, feeling any bit of leftover emotion leave my body right then and there.
Read to finally close this chapter.
He frantically shakes his head while a single tear runs down his cheek, making a wide grin tilt my lips.
“Callie, please, please---”
“A bullet through your head.”
Catching Fire really felt like Callie's book. Yes, we got Kane chapters and he had his own character development, but this book was really about Callie coming into her own, and I'm not mad Billie framed the book this way. It was empowering. Callie was empowering. It was amazing to read Callie's journey and how much she's grown since she was 18, how everyone in her life has taught her something, and how she is stronger now because of it. Reign helped her grow her wings, and after awhile, she didn't need him anymore to fly. We got to see her accept her past, the truth about her family, and her love for Kane. Callie’s character development shone at the end, and I felt the pain she felt when talking about how she’s always wanted to feel accepted by her dad and brother and how she’s always wanted a family (also Kane telling her he’ll give her one – I’m crying). I hope Billie follows up with this in the future, because Callie deserves it.
Their wrap-up
I’m really disappointed that this is the last book for Callie and Kane. I really hope we get to see them in the future. Since this was only a duet, I felt the ending was rushed to try and fit everything in for them - Callie meeting her grandma, the pregnancy announcement (Kane’s reaction is the CUTEST), and the bonus chapter. I’m just being selfish because for such a great couple I wanted to see more of them and their future, especially since Catching Fire had been focused on Callie’s past. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT BILLIE
✰Remaining Thoughts✰
o I am very curious to know why Billie decided to include the prologue, and in Frank Sr’s POV no less. I don’t like him!!!!!!!!!!
o Okay. There’s no way Imogen and Liam won’t get together. I physically/mentally/emotionally/spiritually NEED it. Once again, GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT
o Although I am unsure of the flashback chapters, Billie did do her sly magic of intentionally placing chapters next to each other to show connections, much like she did in Chasing Fire (Callie being called a handful before, Callie saying her and Reign fell out of love long before their relationship ended and then flashing back to that moment)
o Their first fight scene after reuniting and Kane calling Callie a pain in his ass had me LIVING, I could feel all the emotion and that line was just funny as heck
o Franklin using the word “wicked” properly had the New Englander in me screaming with joy
o Introducing Franklin & the Boston Wolves ???? comin in HOT and can’t wait to meet Franklin again in his book
Well, that’s it. The end of Callie and Kane. Which I have not accepted yet. I don't know what to do now. I feel lost knowing they don't have another book. I'm going to go back and re-read now GBYE
