From the acclaimed author of the popular "Yngling" series. For centuries, the mercenaries of the planet Tyss have been legendary for their military prowess. But a new legend is born when they bestow their training secrets on the young people, who now face their first assignment as the White Regiment.
John Dalmas—pseudonym for John Robert Jones—wrote many books based on military and governmental themes throughout his career. He grew up in Minnesota and Michigan and resided in Spokane, Washington. He was a parachute infantryman in WWII and was discharged in 1946 without ever being put seriously in harm's way. He has worked as a longshoreman, merchant seaman, logger, construction worker, and smokejumper. He attended Michigan State University, majoring in forestry, but also took creative writing.
This is the third installment in the five-volume “Regiment” saga, and the direct sequel in action to The White Regiment. The “White T’swa” -- Iryalans trained by the real T’swi -- have graduated and been sent out on their first contract to a world where an arrogant absolute monarch has invaded a much smaller neighbor. (Smolen, the smaller country, has sympathizers around the world and one of these has taken the contract on their behalf.) The situation is ready-made for the mercenaries’ special skills in small-unit actions and Col. Romlar and his troopers are having an increasingly important impact on events -- when the aforesaid monarch hires his own T’swa regiment. Then things begin to get interesting as the two groups of “playmates” join in joyful battle. There are numerous subplots involving individuals, including two in which infiltrators from each side stalk the leaders of the other side. It’s a nice wrap-up, and the last chapter will leave you ready to grab the next volume. Dalmas’s style is straightforward and he’s sufficiently knowledgeable in tactics to completely hold your interest.
I lost track of Dalmas when paperbacks started becoming an issue for my vision, but I particularly liked the Regiment novels. Now with ebooks I may return to Dalmas.
