Lane Douglas is a die-hard realist, so when her superstitious grandfather tells her he will die if the tree planted long ago in his honor in Scotland is chopped down, she doesn't buy it for a second. But when her grandfather's health starts a downward slide, Lane hops on a plane and flies across the ocean to convince the landowner to spare the old, diseased oak. To her surprise the landowner is a devilishly handsome man named Conlan MacGregor. I’ve always dreamed of living in a castle—or, at least, a house that resembles a castle—in a faraway country in the middle of nowhere, but Leslie Ann Dennis’s Reason to Believe will probably be as close as I’ll ever get. So you can bet your last Scottish kilt that I lived vicariously through her characters while reading this delightful romance.

Lane Douglas has a dilemma. Her beloved poppa believes he’s dying because a tree that was planted at his birth in Scotland has now become diseased. The current landowner plans to cut down the tree so the disease doesn’t spread to the surrounding trees, and Ian Douglas believes he’ll die when the tree is destroyed. Though Lane doesn’t believe in all that hocus-pocus superstition, her grandfather seems to be on the verge of death. So she heads to Wolfscrag Castle to confront Laird Conlan MacGregor and ask him to save the tree.

Tantalized by the spunky woman with her funny American slang, Conlan allows Lane to stay and doctor the tree—even though he doesn’t believe it can be saved. The longer she’s there, the more attracted to her he becomes, until letting her go becomes almost impossible.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a romance that didn’t have me rolling my eyes and saying, “Oh, give me a break!” Not once did I think that about Reason to Believe. Lane Douglas is such an endearing and delightful heroine, and she makes this novel a pleasure to read. She’s so down-to-earth and likable that there’s no way you can not like her—even when she’s scoffing at the Scottish belief in magical creatures and superstitious stories.

Though (like most women) I’m not crazy about seeing a man in a kilt, Conlan MacGregor might just change my mind. He’s a super-sexy hero, and I kept hearing and picturing actor Gerard Butler in my mind whenever Conlan showed up. And the sex scenes were—oh, my!—scorching hot, yet tasteful and full of love.

I also loved the fascinating superstitions and folklore of Scotland that Ms. Dennis wove into Reason to Believe, adding a bit of mystery and intrigue to the story. Please don’t pass this one up! A romance read simply doesn’t get much better than this.

Lane Douglas is a rational, independent woman, too busy running her interior design business to even think about letting a man into her heart. Her ordered life is turned upside down when her grandfather falls ill. Poppa is convinced his health is tied to the health of a tree planted in Scotland in his honor. They receive a letter from the landowner where the tree is planted stating that the tree is diseased and will be cut down soon. To please her grandfather, Lane heads to the Scottish Highlands to confront the landowner despite the fact that she doesn’t believe in silly superstitions. To her surprise, the landowner turns out to be the handsome laird of Wolfscrag Castle, Conlan MacGregor. The two of them sense an immediate attraction. She convinces him to let her stay at his castle while they nurse the tree back to health. As Lane and Conlan grow closer, she is unable to resist falling for the alluring young laird.

I really fell in love with this captivating story. REASON TO BELIEVE is everything a modern fairy tale should be: a sexy hero searching for the woman who will make his life complete; a strong heroine holding out for the right man to win her heart; and a magical story set against the backdrop of a Scottish castle in the Highlands. The tale is interwoven with Scottish folklore, and I love the clever way the oak tree was linked to Lane’s grandfather. The characters’ personalities really popped off the page. Lane and Conlan’s passion for each other felt very real (and very hot), even though their relationship wasn’t always perfect. Lane could be cantankerous at times, and more than once I wanted to smack her and say “can’t you see this amazing man before you?” REASON TO BELIEVE is a wonderfully romantic tale, and if you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a laird’s lady, I would recommend escaping into this book for an afternoon. I really liked it, so I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars.

What a truly lovely read! It's rare, these days, to find an author who has clearly done his or her paranormal and mythological research, and even rarer when he or she can convey that research in such a captivating and real way.

Ms. Dennis whisks the reader away, along with her heroine, to the misty hillsides of modern-day Scotland, and into the middle of traditions steeped in thousands of years of mythology and folklore. I promise you - you will be entranced, following the twists and turns of a love that begins with one diseased tree and an old man's fervent wish.

The only thing I found just a tad bit unrealistic was the overdone, almost stereotypical Scottish speech. Having been to Scotland many times in my life, I can honestly say I don't recall anyone every talking quite that way on a normal basis. However, understanding that such stereotypical speech patterns are sometimes the only way to distinguish accents in written language, it made it's point, while not being overly intrusive into the story.

All around, a truly excellent read! Brava, Ms. Dennis!!

As far as a story, it started out sweet and romantic but then the raunchy sex scenes ruined it for me. . . it would have been so much better, in my opinion, if the author would have left somethings to wonder on... I could not recommend this book to anyone I know due to the amount of graphic sexual events.
