Matthew - My love life is kind of a mess. Okay, fine, it’s non existent. Believe it or not, short, chubby, and furry aren’t characteristics that top most guys’ boyfriend checklists; no guys I’ve met, anyway. My dating history is a shit parade of one night stands with men who promised to call the next day but never did. And so, I’ve put finding love on the back burner to focus on my business. I own a bakery called Muffin Tops (get it?) with my best friend Val. I do all of the baking and she handles ordering and accounting...and talking to our customers because I have an awkward streak in me. Anyway, business is good, but it could be better, so I’ve scheduled a meeting at The Caldwell, the fanciest and most successful hotel in the city in hopes of striking a business deal with them. Nervous but hopeful, I head to my meeting, not expecting to have my world rocked when I meet Simon; a gorgeous, debonair, charming man who is sixteen years my senior. What starts off as a business partnership soon develops into something greater than I ever dreamed of.
**This standalone M/M age gap romance is for readers 18 and up! It is low angst and insta-love, and is full of funny scenes, feel good moments, and lots of steam! There is no cheating or cliffhangers and it has a very happy HEA.
I live in rural Ohio with my husband and two sons who drive me nuts, but I love them with all my heart. I enjoy reading and writing romance of all types, but gay romance is my forte and favorite! Twice the sexy men? Yes, please! My books tend to be low angst because it hurts my heart, but they do contain lots of heartfelt moments, steamy scenes and a healthy dose of humor. Thank you to everyone for checking out my page and I hope you enjoy my books. Happy reading!
I'm not going to sugarcoat my opinion. This book was dreadful. Reading it was like watching a trainwreck in slow motion.
Both MCs are one dimensional and too perfect. We're told that Simon likes thick guys, but what else does he see in Matthew, whom he calls "pretty thing"?
Simon is active. Matty is not. Simon is 16 years older and a hotel tycoon. Matty owns a struggling bakery.
Don't get me wrong. Opposites DO attract sometimes, but the relationship was so shallow, there was no room to explore compromises and interests.
Simon tells Matty he's in love with him 24 hours after he meets him, and of course Matty says it back, instead of running away screaming like a normal person.
There are no disagreements, just one ridiculous misunderstanding manufactured for drama that made me literally face palm.
But that's not all, friends:
Matty's best friend sexually harrasses the pizza delivery guy, but that's okay because the guy likes it. They fall deeply in love too.
The MCs have sex in the back of a limo. They get completely naked, and it's Simon's first time bottoming. They get dressed and walk into a fancy gathering where Simon is the star of the show. The entire time I was thinking, dear god they must reek of sweat and cum.
We have one "bad guy" who is OTT bizarrely manipulative and allowed to be.
Simon's mom is cruel to Matty when she meets him, but then she apologizes and all is well.
These aren't people with complex thoughts and feelings; they're puppets. Add the wooden dialogue and "nothing happens" plot, and I think I'm generous rounding up to 2 stars.
2 Stars! 😬Wanted to like it, thought that the story would be unique but it was cringey, cheesy and just inexplicable. This was too unrealistic, the conversation and chemistry seemed corny. I almost DNFed it but skipped a lot because I just couldn't read without rolling my eyes the entire time.. 🙄🙄 This was my first book by this author, but I'm pretty sure that this will also be my last. 👎
Super sweet romance! We watch two successful men find what they have been missing. Each is special and deserving of all the goodness. Our executive hires a baker to supply the hotel with his delicious cookies, and then they go to dinner. Matthew, 26, a short, chubby, hairy, bearded ginger, co-owns the bakery with his BFF, Val, who has her own side romance, and he's a fun character. He needs someone to cherish him and treat him right. Hotel executive/owner, Simon, 42, has dark hair, a few grays and is tall and fit. He has been waiting forever for his "someone." A man he can have fun with, spoil and love.
Each man knows the other is it, and they make the most of it. Insta-love, hot sexy times and deep emotions are there for our two guys.
It's light, fluffy, unlikely, and romantic. We see how they survive strife and come out on top. So, as a reminder, this is fiction, fun, different, and heartwarming. ENJOY !
This book is a bit of a disappointment. Baker Matthew is short, overweight, and hairy (aka a bear - technically a cub based on age). He meets Simon, the older, highly attractive, rich scion of a hotel magnate. Insta-love occurs.
That's my first complaint: I'm not a fan of insta-love. Here they aren't fated lovers or anything, but they do go from zero to a hundred in twenty-four hours. Which, I mean, good for them, I guess? But insta-love in "real-world" romances bugs me because it is so unrealistic. I'll admit that the book opens with an author's note explaining how her stories are always insta-love, so I didn't go into this story unaware of what I was in for. But I... don't really enjoy the way it plays out here.
The book does contain a rather shallow villain and minor family-related angst, but what bothers me the most is the reason I picked this book up in the first place: the representation of an overweight character. Now, I actively seek out romances with overweight characters because reasons, so when I saw this recommended, I was hopeful that it would be better than other "fat guy" romances I've come across. Unfortunately, the plot is pretty weak, the characters are dull, and overall the story falls flat. Some thoughts: Matthew is 26 and stopped dating years earlier because of his weight - unfortunate yet realistic. Yet he doesn't consider seeking alternative apps or resources for meeting people? Really? In addition, not even once in this book are the terms "cub" or "bear" (or hell, even "chub") referenced. Simon's fetishization of overweight men is leaned into yet even he doesn't mention those terms. For as appearance-based and identity-politics-obsessed the community is, this is a pretty major failing of this book.
One day I'll find my golden snitch: a romance with an overweight character who doesn't lose weight, who falls in love at a normal pace, and who actually seems like a real person. At this rate I should probably just write it myself.
This was a fantastic example of Jayda Marx at her best. The last few books she's put out were "eh" at best or a "dnf" at worst. This though. THIS was what I love about Jayda's work. Feels out the wahzoo, heat and humor and that little something extra she manages to weave into her stories.
Read this book! Enjoy it! You'll have a smile on your face throughout (except that bit with Wendell) and you won't regret even a single second. Marx got her groove back and we are all winners.
I couldn’t get behind this. The entire thing made no sense. Like...really?? I’m not even going to go there.
It was so cheesy that it veered into lame territory. It was also very unbelievable. Like, he works out and has a hard body and yet he likes thick boys??
I don’t know why I keep reading Jayda Marx books. They’re not getting any better.
wow. I didn't know a book could be so awful. This book is bad in a cheesy, cringey, terrible writing sort of way and not a problematic sort of way. In fact, the only reason this is getting 2 stars instead of one is the I loved the fat rep and we need romance books where someone is unapologetically attracted to fat people.
Other than that, this book could've been good if the right person had written it. In fact, I have a few authors in mind who would absolutely crush this concept, but Jayda Marx isn't one of them. I mean seriously, this book is bad yall. Like "i love you" in two days, awful pet names "pretty thing" within the hour of meeting, and just terrible terrible cliches. Also, the sex scenes were really bad and I know I'm not a dude, but pretty sure just shoving it in there without any prep isn't gonna go as well as it's made out to be here. And, one of the characters is described as having "a dick as thick as a soda can" and I don't even know what to do with that information. Anyway, it was uncomfortable for everyone.
This book is about a fat baker who owns his own bakery with his fat best friend and it's called Muffin Tops, which I actually think is awesome. When Matthew goes to a local hotel to try and make a deal to sell in their lobby, the owner of the hotel takes one look at Matthew, starts calling him "pretty thing" in his head and steals the meeting from someone else. He then proceeds to save Matthew from choking on a banana (because of course) while also getting a hard on from the contact. It was weird. Then they make this in-no-way-realistic deal and Matthew is in love. They go on a date and have sex, then say "I love you" the next day. It's freaking wild. Now beyond the cringey awful MCs, there's a super judgmental mom who things a fat small business owner isn't good enough for her son, a jealous ex who calls Matthew fat and makes him cry, and a ridiculous side plot with Matthew's best friend and the pizza delivery guy.
I'm serious, please skip this book and go find better fat romances.
OMG this was so cute and so sweet it makes your teeth ache. I fucking LOVED it!!
This is definitely an instalove romance but that is mentioned right as soon as you open the book. Matty (26) goes to a luxury hotel for a possible business deal to sell his baked goods in the lobby area and Simon Caldwell (42, son of the owner of the hotel brand) sees Matty and immediately wants him. Simon has a type and Matty fits it to a T - hairy and thick allllll over. Simon takes him on a date the next evening and they hit it off from there... they sleep together that night and Simon stays over.
Basically they say the I love yous after a few days but honestly, both of these characters were so fucking cute that I didn’t even care. Simon was so attentive and sweet to Matty and seriously loved all over his thiiiick as fuck body and made him feel wanted. And Matty liked Simon for Simon, not for his money or where being with Simon could get him. Ahhhh, swoon.
Another thing that I loved? Matty’s best friend Val. She is a plus size badass bitch who is crushing on this scrawny dude who works at their favorite pizza place. She’s been ordering pizza to see the delivery dude, Isaac, for the last 6 months. The chapter that we saw Val and Isaac interact was priceless. I was cracking up soooooo hard I had tears. So good. 😂
There was a tiiiiny bit of OM drama but it wasn’t what it seems. There was a jealous asshole who messed things up for Simon and Matty but it was resolved pretty quickly. So all in all it wasn’t that bad. I really felt for Matty when reading it though.. hurt my heart for just a second there.
The end was so cute. Epilogue was great. I absolutely loved this story. It was just what I needed to make me smile. I’m definitely adding more books to my tbr from this author.
Matthew Pace is the owner and baker at Muffin Tops, a local bakery. He meet with Simon Caldwell, part owner of the grandest hotel in the city. The meeting doesn't start well when Matthew chokes on a piece of banana. Simon rescues Matthew. Matthew is there to propose he opens a bandstand in the lobby of the hotel. Simon turns that down but offers a contract to buy 600 cookies a week. Simon takes Matthew on a date that night. They fall in love and deal with the usual difference in social status problems to make the relationship work.
Going to work one morning, neither man would have expected to meet their life partner... but sometimes it happens. I have genuinely enjoyed the other stories by this author, but somehow the chemistry between Matty and Simon just didn’t convince. It was a shame, because there was a little bit of Cinderella about this, with a man struggling to get by, being swept off his feet by someone who materially had everything. Two astute businessmen in their own rights should have been a good match, but it didn’t quite work this time.
If You’re into ridiculously fluffy, silly, insta-love rom-com type stories, this is for you. And by fluffy, this is a chocolate covered marshmallow on a snickerdoodle base.
To quote my sister, this was just not my brand. The relationships and characters bore no resemblance to reality and the romance was incredibly hetero normative, which is very disappointing for a queer love story. Also the sex scenes were dreadful.
This reads like a very unrealistic fantasy, almost dreamlike. I get that this is romance and all romance novels have some element of fantasy, but I also need some elements of realism and this does not have it. This feels like a dream sequence where Matthew meets Mr. Perfect in a movie style meet-cute. I'm not a fan of the pacing. Let me know when Matthew wakes up and the real story begins.
I loved that Matt is a,plus sized hero and that Simon appreciates, and is crazy attracted to the loving man he is. They are sweet together, but otherwise the story is definitely over the top when it comes to sweetness and insta -everything.
Jayda Marx is absolutely one of my favorite authors and a perpetual one-click on any book she writes. More to Love is another completely wonderful one and totally enchanting. I love how the author is able to incorporate snarky humor and heartfelt moments with steamy sex and sometimes a little angst. She oftens showcases characters that are a little out of the norm - whether it be age or physical limitations/disabilities, financial gaps, family backgrounds, or, as in this case, someone who is a plus size. I love that Matthew is such a warm, funny, caring person and that he tries hard not to let society's ideal of physical beauty stop him from reaching for both professional and personal success. Simon is a lovely counterpart, showing that the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" to be utterly true. The two of them are fire 🔥🔥 together and despite a few setbacks (cue the villain music here), they keep their hearts open, communicate with each other, and finally reach their well deserved HEA. Val, as Matthew's best friend, is an outspoken, sassy, beautiful breath of fresh air and the perfect bestie to the less confident young man. I absolutely loved this book and my only complaint is that it's over now. I just want more! Definitely recommend this book!
Simon is 42. I went back to the first date scene multiple times to confirm this because Simon is supposed to be a 42 year old, successful businessman. Yet he throws business at Matthew without any real negotiation, wrangles a date that night with his new contractor, immediately beds him and they're declaring love within a day of meeting and we're not even halfway through the story. I finished it so that you don’t have to.
The remainder is Val getting an instalove moment for herself, Wendell playing the "villain," Simon's mom disapproving of Matthew, Simon's emo teen reaction to that (he is 42 years old!), Wendell still only existing to be a contrived annoyance quickly put down at any turn then Simon and Matthew live happily ever after. I can't even give this points for body positivity. It's honestly the kind of story that could be read whenever someone wants to drag the whole romance genre for ridiculousness. This is so cringe and I only have myself to blame for actually reading it.
It's a shame there is so much dislike for this book around because it fills the niche it is meant to fill perfectly - romantic fluff.
There is nothing deep, intensely emotional, or heavily angsty in this story. It wasn't meant to, the author even states this in her notes!
Shakespeare or another work of great literature? Not even close! What it is is an instalove, feel good, body positive, schmoopy romance. And you know what? That's exactly what I needed when I started this book.
If you are looking for an emotional, angsty, or intense reading experience, look elsewhere. If like me, you are looking for something to refresh your brain from a previous emotional, angsty, or intense reading experience, then this may just fit the bill.
More to Love is a beautiful story of two men who seem to be polar opposites being exactly what the other needed. There is not much more to it than that, and I loved every moment.
I hope this post doesn’t discourage others from giving this book a go.
If instalove is your jam then this book is for you.
Unfortunately, instalove is not MY jam.
A fact I’d temporarily forgotten when downloading what was promised to be a funny, light-hearted read on a recommendation post.
Matty and Simon were definitely sweet, their story was light and fluffy and certainly lacking in angst.
I’d hoped it would be a good palate cleanser (after the last few books I’d read being higher angst) but the too fast pacing of the story ensured that I soon remembered that I’m not a fan of the speed date that turns into sex that turns into boyfriends that turns into ‘I love you’s’ all within the space of a few days.
I ended up putting it down at 35%, unsure if I’d finish it.
And I didn’t.
I gave this story three stars because its not the authors fault I picked a book I should’ve known I wouldn’t enjoy, the writing was good, the characters were likeable, it just wasn’t.. my jam.
What a simply delightful book! It pushed all my buttons: mild age gap, class gap, gorgeous man who loves a chubby, hairy, adorable man. Ooh, and a bakery with goodies to die for! Hotelier Simon falls for baker Matthew the moment he sees him. Once he tastes the cookies Matty brings him, there's no turning back. Partners in business/ partners in life. Not even an undermining, arrogant, entitled as...can spoil their happiness. Yes, there are great friends, great food, laughs and tears, and sexy scenes that will leave you panting. Family issues will be resolved. And a proposal to remember. You are gonna love this book! This book contains adult themes and language, mm sex and is intended for mature readers only.

DNF at 52%. I could have finished it, but why bother. I was not enjoying it. Even a piece of unapologetic insta-love fluff should be able to maintain a minimal amount of suspension of disbelief, but the MCs simply did not behave realistically. They discussed all their sordid dating history and deep insecurities on their first date, before they even knew each other. They declared their mutual love a day after they met. They practically loved everything about each other, they didn't find even a single flaw in their instant soulmate. There are science fiction heroes that are more realistic than the MCs of this book. Sorry, not for me.
I love Jayda Marx's books and she is definitely one of my go-to reads for low angst, feel-good, insta-love stories :) Matty is a short, chubby, bearded baker who hasn't had the best of luck with dating so he throws himself into running his store (Muffin Tops) with his best friend Val. He meets Simon, owner of a chain of hotels, randomly one day at a business meeting. It's insta-attraction and funny moments when they meet :) Matty is adorkable, funny, and so sweet and Simon falls head over heels. Wonderful book with a great couple of men and a sassy best friend!
* sigh * I had initially thought about DNFing this, but decided I would finish it, bc at the time of reading I needed something that would occupy my brain but not challenge it in any way. It's insta love fantasyland stuff (and is advertised as such, so I was warned.) I did roll my eyes several times, but the fat rep was neutral (tho I didn’t quite get the super fit guy that loved his husky boyfriend but made sure he himself exercised “enough” to be able to eat his boyfriend's baking. I have heaps of thoughts about 'health concern' and orthorexia in romance novels, actually.)
What a refreshing book. Having a main character who isn’t all sculpted abs and muscle bound goodness was so nice. Matty was just an average guy and I adored him. He and Simon were a great couple.
I love that Jayda can give us books that keep us interested and make us smile. That’s what I’ve come to love about her books. Definitely high in the sweet and insta-love side, but always a joy to read.
