In 2159, the Democratic State Force gains ground every day. As they fight to bring representative democracy back, they become heroes to the citizens indentured to the United Corporations of America. Widely spread guerilla units support the first civilian protests the country has seen in decades. Now it’s the Corporations on the defensive. And they are getting desperate.
On Base 1407, the Wildcards start to think they just might help the former United States wake up from its nightmare after all. In spite of the hints of internationally banned weapons the Corporations may have up their sleeves, there’s hope. People whisper that maybe, someday, they might just win. But you should never say something like that too loud.
Bringing their own experiences as a marginalized author to the page with flawed but genuine characters, O.E. Tearmann’s work has been described as “Firefly for the dystopian genre.” Tearmann is a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America, the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, a finalist for the Cygnus award and the winner of the 2022 Feathered Quill award. They live in Colorado with two cats, their partner, and the belief that individuals can make humanity better through small actions. In their spare time, they teach workshops on writing GLTBQ characters, plant gardens that showcase sustainable agricultural practices, and play too many video games.
That was a ride! First acting as if taking over actual territory was self sacrifice type behavior. Taking away private communication. Keeping people in line with civic mortality mandates. Using an armed force of people and drones to get rid of naysayers.
"Soilent green is people!"- movie qoute
Then protocols to stop people from stealing. Really! Like the clerks wasn't enough. Like communities being in a police state, didn't quite quench cooperate thirst.
(Insert rant here) cause when the crap hits the fan. I'll hopefully have already bartered for canned peaches, eggs, and preserves.
Draw Dead by O.E. Tearmann Aces High, Jokers Wild #5
2159 AD could be utopian or dystopian depending on what earthlings opt to do now…in this world inhabited by dogmatic autocratic controlling corporations, dissenting Dusters, and Fringers on the outside…utopia does not exist for a select few and even for them…it is not all that. It is a world I hope to never see but one that is populated with characters I can’t wait to spend time with because the Wildcards ARE all that and perfect company as they fight to right wrongs.
What I liked: * The Wildcards and dissenters working to find out what the cause of and solution for the unconventional weapon of war launched on them by the corporations * The way they came together to assist the Writers Union * Seeing how the Wildcards are coming along two years after the last book took place * Aidan & Kevin: commander and logistics officers of Base 1407, married and settled, loving, wise, kind, strong, and there for one another, their team and others * Janice: hydroelectric officer, trans woman, agriculture and science savvy, protective, strong, assertive, and ripe for a relationship – really liked her interaction with young Abigail and Milo * Milo and his daughter Abigail: Milo had some brainwashing to overcome and does so as the story progresses, Abigail was there to help not only her father learn but assist on the base – the tie between father and daughter was wonderful * Catching up with the other characters on the base: how the younger ones are changing, how the ones in relationships are faring, and what they are up to in general * The camaraderie of the Wildcards and how they are there for one another as well as for others that are in need even * The sci-fi aspects that I wouldn’t mind seeing invented sooner than later * The impact that the dissenters are having on the Corporations * Being able to identify with and root for those working against the corporations * That this series is so believable, educational, illuminating, and relatable * Thinking about and hoping for the overthrow of the corporations * All of it except for…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * The loss of innocent lives
Thank you to NetGalley, Amphibian Books, and Books Forward PR for the ARC – This is my honest review.
And we are back with the amazing series, Aces High Jokers Wild by O. E. Tearmann. OK, before we kick the review, we have to tell you this: If you haven’t read the previous books, please do so, because this isn’t the right book to start with, believe me. You can read all the previous reviews here, get all the books on the authors site for real cheap, and add them on your TBR list on Goodreads here. Off with the reviews? Yes, you bet!
This time, as per the titles of the chapters on the TOC, there might also be diseases, as we see a lot of medical stuff, and requirements, annnnnnnnd the fact that we start with Janice’s card… We can have severe bad news here, so… we can expect a lot from this book, and even before the book starts we are already on the balls of our feet!
How can a book be this good? Simple answer: The Tearmann are writing, of course. So if you haven’t read book one, two, tree and four, grab them this instant and join the Wildcards in these wild adventures because this will be one of the, if not THE, BEST series you’ll read. Love this to the core of my existence! Let’s go.
Book 5(!) – Dead Hand. Uff, ok. I’m here writing this before plunging into the book, because for the first time in my life I’m feeling that sinking feeling in my stomach, that nervousness that you feel before you do a presentation, you know? Hahaahahahahha, this book series is so gripping that once you dive, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions, and you never know what to expect and leaves you tired and exhilarated, and… Ufff!!! Haahhahaahha. Ok, ok, let’s do this. Maximum effort!!
We start off with Janice, mad as hell, ready to cut Aidan’s head and a problem that is proving itself difficult to solve. Yeap.
After reading a Yvonne and Sarah only scene, we realize that it is one of the few scenes so far that they were the central focus of, and we also realize how little we knew of them.
The book keeps giving and giving when it comes to dealing wig emotional things on our daily lives, and the fact that Yvonne and Sarah are working as a mom duo towards Tommy is one of the cutest and heartwarming thing on this book
We can see that on the first chapters, the authors are building up the upcoming events slowly, plotting and planting (pun intended) ideas on our heads to create expectations and surprises on the next pages and books because we now know that the authors leave nothing behind, and nothing to chance. Everything that they say will be used later, you just don’t know where, how or when, and actually, there is no way to find out. Believe me, I tried to predict events on all 5 books and been wrong 100% of the time.
Few are the books that are this diverse and honest when it comes to “inclusion” of characters. Seriously. You get people from India, references of Nigeria and how beautiful Nigerian women are, people from South America, and China in important roles, with accents well put and even names that sound and read as they should according to their origin. It’s something so natural that you actually feel at ease reading this book, and series, without feeling excluded, regardless of where you are from. There’s a cool character in here for everyone. This is spectacular. Love this series so much.
Janice, hit the jackpot!!! Hahahaaaaah!!!!! Yes!!! Thank you!!! Finally!!! Thank you Jesus!!!!!!! Finally!!! Oh god, some justice to our favourite character!!!! Oh yes!!
Tweak and Kevin, besties?! Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!! And Damien as one of the main characters this time? Niiiice, yet, scary, terrifying.
After a while of romantic scenes, lots, of success, happy momets, and Tweak smiling a lot, it hits you: this book is starting off too good… Too good… *Looks skeptically at the fan*. *Puts helmet, glasses, mask and raincoat*. Any time now…
And we have plagues! Damn diseases. Yeap! It hit the fan, and… a Commander… Yeap!!!! Better run for cover, this will be grizzly! Add that to civilians needing to be rescued, and all the possibilities of them being bombed again by a drone…. We are talking about high stakes here. This will be bad.
And this is one of the worst books when it comes to people dying. The death count is enormous. So be prepared for tears and sobs and dead characters. Lots. Main characters won’t die? Well, think again. You will cry with this book, and you will feel tired with all the anxiety and the dread. This is heavy.
Don’t expect action because this part of the series doesn’t have much, if any, action scene, but there’s thriller, oh you bet, the gut-punching, nerve-racking, throw-the-book-to-the-wall type of thriller and suspense, so hold your hat tight and prepare the tissue papers because this will be wild!
Once again, the authors made an excellent job when it came to the morals of the book, specially when it comes to being transgender, and reinforced the religion related arguments, exposing fallacies and showing how religions, *coughs* Christianity *coughs*, can be twisted to make people hate others and themselves at the same time. *Claps* Amazing *claps*. The authors even proposed a book for us within the story that we have got to check out!
Personally, I won’t say that this is my least favorite of the series because this book is outstanding, deep, relatable, incredibly unexpected, specially once we regard all of Janice’s time in front. Loved it. In a weird and sad way, yes, sure, but still, it’s another incredible book by theses incredible authors, and you will totally agree with me once you read it, so do get the book, check out the reviews of the previous books here, follow the authors and see other reviews of this same book and series on Goodreads, so you can be sure of how stunning this book and series is. See you in book 6. XD
Pros: Excellent narrative. So good that you forget it’s there when you lose yourself in the story Excellent follow up from book 4 Excellent plot, quite unexpected, realistic, self-developing and unpredictable Excellent rationale upon moralistic subjects We get Janice as the main focus of the book. So much win! New and interesting characters Sarah and Yvonne get more attention here too Heart-tearing moments
Cons Lots of characters die, so be prepared for that. We weren’t.
I'm out of breath after finishing this wild ride full of real world consequences. This series about Democratic forces fighting back against the tyranny that is corporation rule. It would be wildly imaginative...if it wasn't busy being intensely topical. The first four books in this series were so amazing. Book five transcends them on a whole new level.
Technically, I think all the books can sit as standalones, but the experience is much better starting at book one. There are intricacies that may not be fully understood if you don't. These characters are all fully formed, empathetic individuals with unique personalities and strengths/weaknesses. Its also the only series I've seen and read to have transgender characters. Not only that, but the issues they go through were handled so well that you sometimes forget they are transgender. Author Tearmann wants to make you love her characters, but not love them because they are transgender.
This particular book centers in on some flawed new characters, a devastating biochemical attack, bigotry, death and consequences of romantic relationships. You might assume that bigotry was tackled early on in the series, but truth is it was almost a non issue for the Wildcard base until now. It was jarring the way it was presented and from whom...just like it can be in real life. Author Tearmann seems to be saying, "yes, it comes from anybody under any circumstances and you might not see it coming." I don't know when this author started writing this story, but using bio weapons to cull the Democratic party sounds pretty eerie considering the Coronavirus outbreak.
"If they wanted to kill me when I was a baby because I was made of the wrong DNA combos, if they hated me for being mixed, then Tweak and me are exactly the same! They hate her for being mixed from genes that they didn’t think they should mix, and they hate me for the same thing!”
“It’s not like that, it’s—” Milo started. And got cut off again.
“It’s not what?” Abbie demanded. “It’s not the same because what happened to her was in a test tube? So? They hate us the same way, for the same things. So if you think something’s wrong with her, then something’s wrong with me too.” The skinny girl stomped to Tweak’s side, fists on her hips. “And if you say nothing’s wrong with me, then you gotta say nothing’s wrong with her too. And if nothing’s wrong with her, then there’s nothing wrong with testing her antibodies and seeing how they work. You said I could help out and learn today? Well, maybe you can learn too.”"
This dazzling speech is by a teenager, and there are so many meaningful paragraphs of dialogue like this. Some outlining how death is dealt with, some going over the routines on the base. Its all important...Author Tearmann writes it like she's speaking her last breath. With urgency and desperation that people will read her rag tag group of warriors and understand them. This is not a novel that cowtows to mainstream. Its intelligence flows off the page in the way it highlights character actions over artificial drama. Its a brilliantly written saga, and I'm telling you all to give it a chance. It was so out of my wheelhouse until I gave in to it. Its beyond timely, even if you remove the Coronavirus from the mix. You will remember this story after reading it, especially next time you hit one click on the Amazon site.
“Draw Dead”. Book five of the Aces High, Joker’s Wild queer cyberpunk adventure series knocks it right out of the park. What unfolds is a story that—as sensationalist media might say—is ripped from today’s headlines. As we readers pass the one-year mark of the Covid-19 pandemic, we find Aidan Headley and his team also fighting for their lives against their most deadly enemy yet—a baffling illness that’s rapidly reaching pandemic proportions.
Every member of the Wild Cards family is needed to battle this deadly enemy: From the smallest child to the eldest person, everyone must work together. That includes the new guy who, as he settles in, manages to get Janice smitten, while opening a rift between himself and everyone else that he might not be able to close.
Will their combined forces be enough to win the fight for everyone’s lives in this tension-filled adventure, with a sideline of kickass high-tech horticulture? (Bet you didn’t see that coming.)
O.E. Tearmann has honed their storytelling skills over the course of this series, and it really shows in book five. The plot structure and pacing are spot-on, while character development and interactions are over the top and very brave. As for the story itself, just wow. As events unfold, you’ll probably be staying up past your bedtime to see what happens next. In the end, you’ll be rewarded with a highly satisfying conclusion.
A small encouragement: If you haven’t yet read the first four novels in the Aces High, Joker’s Wild series, I strongly encourage you to do so. While “Draw Dead” stands well on its own merit, you’ll be missing out on previous adventures, but more importantly, human backstories that show why the Wild Cards are such a fiercely tight-knit family.
Thank you to author O.E. Tearmann, StoryOrigin, and Amphibian Press for allowing me to read a digital advance review copy of this book. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.
This book takes place four years after the start of the series. In those four years, the Wild Cards have lived together, loved together, experienced loss together, and fought together. Now they're back and they're gaining ground with the rest of the Democratic State Force in the war against the corps, but there are new rumors, new weapons, new dangers around every corner. The writing in this book is solid. You can see where the authors have improved since the beginning of the series. Their plots are tighter, their character development more subtle and impactful. Everything in the series is heating up and this book brings out the best in everyone on the Wild Cards as they face the newest threat to them and the rest of the Force. This book has everything I've loved from the first four books and then some. It's brilliantly done and I didn't want to end. Now I must wait (Im)patiently for more.
The Wildcards’ dark, dystopian journey and fight continues in the fifth book in the series. This book is at times darker than some of the others in the series and the reader is taken on an emotional rollercoaster throughout the book. I like that no matter how dark the trials and challenges get there is always a spark of hope in the books and the series as a whole. That didn’t stop me crying at some points in the book. The plot as always is gripping but for me one of the best parts of the series as a whole are the characters they are smart, resourceful and brave. Each is an individual with their own baggage and issues but together they thrive and this book epitomises that thread throughout the series. I liked seeing more of Janice than her grumpy sweary persona from previous books. It was also really touching to see how much Tweak and Billie have matured and got to know who they are and believe in that. I am looking forward to more Wildcard adventures.
This continues to be a series I think and talk about. The Wildcards have faced some big trials to this point, but things are building up.
We also get to learn some more about another character, Janice, the motherly, sometimes foul-mouthed engineer, who has some quippy sayings that have me laughing.
The Wildcards and others like them have been fighting the corporations for some time now, not believing in the various systems, and wanting to break free from control and ruling. In this book, things get more dicey for the Wildcards and many others. Supplies are being tainted as the Corporations try to find a way to get rid of these 'rebels'. There are some tough times ahead for the Wildcards, but will they be able to find their way through? You'll have to read to find out.
I'm never disappointed by I E Tearmann Jokers a wild series. The book is fabulous, the characters are always deep and the story is engaging. Not everything is in a neat and tidy stack of cards on This one. This one takes place with a unknown virus makes everyone's ill and it's become a race to find the source before it becomes to late for all. There is one member of the group that falls pray to the virus and pays the price of not being strong enough to make it. Very sad. I look forward to more of the jokers wild team in the future.
Book 5 starts approx. 4 years after the start of the series. This one hit me so hard, such an emotional story with real life consequences. I love how book 5 shines a new light on the wildcards. I just loved how the author made each character with a unique personality with strengths/weaknesses. loved seeing the existing relationships flourish and new ones form. Book 5 was defiantly a great addition to the series.
This is a phenomenal fifth addition to this highly entertaining series, I seriously recommend reading the previous books first because the story arc is built up and advances through each and not one minute of this crew's rollercoaster ride is to be missed. I had absolutely no problem finishing it in one sitting.
Amazing addition to an amazing series! I could go on and on about how much I love this series! It is so well written, set in a world unlike anything I've read before! Following the Wildcards on their latest adventure was a wild ride. I'm loving where everybody's stories are going and I cannot wait to see where their adventures take them next!
Fantastic book and really touches on what a family this group has become. They work together to survive, try to make life better for others and celebrate their victories and each other. Well written book that grabs your attention in the beginning so you have to read to the end. I have totally enjoyed this whole series but this one seemed to have a little more emotion. Can't wait for more.
Love this series so much. It deserves so much more love. I'm so invested in all these characters and the great blend of social topics in the background of a military scifi dystopian is not something I would normally pick up but I regret nothing about getting into these books. READ THEM PEOPLE.
