It’s the usual Suicide Squad smorgasbord of crapiola: tie-ins to bad events, drivel about recruiting team members, and pointless missions to nowhere simply because Amanda Waller, bombs in your brains, etc. Give peace a chance? How about this title takes a chance on something original for a change instead!

Despite being a volume one, this book opens with a two-parter tying into the recent Death Metal event. That said, even if you didn’t read it like me, the story is straightforwardly dull: alternate universe characters fight other alternate universe characters for stupid MacGuffin that doesn’t matter. Waller’s on Earth-3 or the Squad after Earth-3 Waller - who cares? This sets the tone for the rest of the book which is: one team of characters you don’t care about fighting another team of characters you don’t care about.

This is the first Suicide Squad book I’ve read in a while that doesn’t have Harley Quinn on the roster. Instead, thanks to the James Gunn movie, we’ve got Peacemaker front and centre, who keeps talking about making peace while wearing a stupid hat - what a riveting character. Waller wants Talon (Batman’s Court of Owls assassin) and Superboy, who’s locked up in Arkham Asylum for some reason, for this latest iteration of the squad.

Once Peacemaker and co. are done drearily punching others there (including “Red X” who looks identical to Dark Horse’s X character, or perhaps vice versa - no matter, they’re both rubbish) they go back to Earth-3 to punch some more idiots for no real reason.

Awful. Just awful across the board - bad storytelling, worse characters, rushed art. Instantly forgettable dross. Like reading an extended comic printed on the back of a cereal box. A thoroughly uninspired and worthless read, don’t give this Suicide Squad book a chance.

DC's determined to make you read half of their books to catch all of this. First are the terrible Future State issues. Then the regular series starts off with the new team dropping into Arkham Asylum right in the middle of A-Day which was the impetus for all of the Bat books post Future State. Then there's a crossover with Teen Titans Academy two issues later. Then we end up back in Earth-3.

I like that all of the old team is gone. No Harley Quinn or Deadshot. Amanda Waller seems to be out of character. She acts like the law doesn't apply to her, sending the team to kidnap people who haven't even been arrested or even committed crimes. It's an OK start to this book but it does have its problems.

This was so fun and loved every moment of this!

In the present day Waller recruits a squad and they are expendable and it also consists of villains from the new 2021 movie and so thats fun. Plus you have different missions for them like them going on some visit to recruit villains like Talon and thats under Joker attack from A-day and then they go after Bolt and battle Red X which was quite fun just showing how dangerous it is and then a crisis on Earth 3 with Bloodsport and Superboy vs Ultraman! Plus a look into the future about JL knockoff led by waller and the fate of Conner!

It was a cool volume and had various twists and turns and I love how it ties into the Infinite Frontier books and like ties into A-day and the earth 3 books plus this squad is quite dynamic and way different from the ones we have seen before and thats a plus and the writing is very sharp and to the point and for the most part a quick read. Plus I love the way they show faller and focusing on Bloodsport and Peacemaker and establishing their motives and they go into the crazy with multiverse which is crazy and the storytelling potential there is huge. The future state story is meh but hints at things to come which sounds exciting. Overall a good read and indeed worth checking out to see if this era of SS is worth reading or not!

Robbie Thompson & Eduardo Pancisa might be the surpise creative team of the year, as they drop an absolutely wonderful Suicide Squad book, with 8 fantastic issues that look to be building towards a war on Earth 3. The first two issues of this collection show the Future State run, which is actually very important to this story, and a decent one at that. The actual meat of the book is a little different though.

The story follows a very new Suicide Squad, with Harley Quinn and Deadshot gone, and Peacemaker and Superboy replacing them on the team, as Amanda Waller takes the squad back over. Their first mission is to rescue Talon from Arkham Asylum, with the A-Day events taking place admist the mission, sending it into a classic chaotic SS mission. From there on out we go on a wild and fun 6 issue ride, with a decent crossover with Teen Titans Academy and Swamp Thing in there for kicks. The TTA issues aren’t included here, but they aren’t necessary. The arc ends with Peacemaker being sent to track down Levi from Ram V’s Swamp Thing run, which has 3 issues tying into this series. I think while this run is great, this is a problem as two major crossovers within a books first 6 issues is a bit much, and you can feel like you are missing out on some important information in volume 2 if you don’t read Ram V’s Swamp Thing (even though you should because it is DC’s best ongoing on the shelves right now). Besides that, this book is fantastic, with consistently fun missions, and a new team of B, C, and D listers making the squad a joy to read again. Talon, Peacemaker, Superboy and Co. is way more interesting than Deadshot and Harley for another 20 volumes. Since I did read both Swamp Thing and TTA, I enjoyed this even more, but it does suck that you have to read other titles to get the full picture.

The Suicide Squad have a new mission, a new roster, and the same old Amanda Waller pulling the strings. But this time, Waller's got even less oversight than usual - and that can't mean anything good for the Squad.

This was super refreshing. Coming off of the fairly straight forward Rebirth run and the very different Tom Taylor one, this gets the Squad back to basics but with a few clever twists along the way.

Jettisoning Harley Quinn and Deadshot gives some other characters a chance to shine, including some newcomers, and the driving force behind everything which I shan't spoil here really gives the book a different feel, which totally changes by the end of the first adventure.

Edurdo Pansica's doing the best work of his career on this book, and I've seen him do exceptional stuff before as well. He's one of those names that doesn't always spring to mind when I think about artists that I really like, but he knows what he's doing, and he can draw an action scene like nobody's business. The colours here are also really crisp.

Suicide Squad's always been a book I've kind of ignored until recently, but this looks like another in a line of great runs, even if it's for very different reasons than what came before it.

Well this was a hell of a nice surprise.

I'll be honest, those Future State issues almost made me drop this. Was not a fan.

But then we got to the main storyline and I was in.

This is a more serious take on the suicide squad. Not as jokey as the last few years. There's still humor, and some great lolz moments, but for the most part we have a more serious team here. And Peacemaker makes a great protagonist/antagonist to the team, and having interesting members with diverse amount of personalities really helps build this team up in a interesting way.

The fact we jump from a failure of a team to Earth 3 to meet that fucking psycho ultraman, is great. Plenty of twist along the way, especially the last page of the volume is a SUPER zinger. The art is great, and some excellent fight scenes to be had.

So besides the first ehhhhh issues that cover the Future State storyline, the next six issues build up to be a rather interesting and fun story arc.

A 4 out of 5.

I really enjoyed James Gunn's The Suicide Squad movie, but between Give Peace a Chance and Tom Taylor's Bad Blood, I'm beginning to think the Suicide Squad simply doesn't work in modern comics.

Just like in Bad Blood, we're awkwardly dropped into the plot mid-story, and with the bonus assumption that we saw the latest movie and loved Peacemaker. Other characters are haphazardly introduced - a classic Suicide Squad conceit because they're expendable, but it doesn't make for an engaging read.

Give Peace a Chance arrives with two Future State issues that are intriguing, I guess, then swiftly forgotten. Peacemaker and Amanda Waller work hard at building a team even though expendable members keep dying. Eventually, we arrive on Earth-3, where Bloodsport has been scoping out potential new recruits. On Earth-3, the heroes are villains - oh, and something is wrong with Superboy, who is a member of the team for "reasons." Why are any of them here really? It'd be nice to receive that explanation at any point in a Suicide Squad comic.

I literally just finished Give Peace a Chance and already the plot is washing out of me. I probably won't give another Suicide Squad volume a chance for a while after this dull entry.

This book started out well but then deteriorated with Earth-3 and Waller going evil? The characters seemed interesting and it appeared they had a sinister government plan that was going to be interesting. But everything after Red X just felt like things were getting off track.

It's a little hard to know what to make of this comic. The writing is pretty good, but the story and characters are muddy.

The big problem with the story is that it crosses over with both Future State and Teen Titans Academy. The first crossover makes the volume entirely unintelligible until you realize that the first two issues are Future State, and there's no explicit indication. (There's a little Future-State-caption, which doesn't say Future State, so you have to know the context.) The second crossover, which introduces some Red X guy, remains semi-unintelligible and likely will until Teen Titans Academy V1 comes out, which is 3 months away, which seems like some pretty bad timing.

There was also some muddy storytelling in an assault on Arkham, with there suddenly being Joker gas everywhere ... and apparently that's YET ANOTHER crossover, to "A-Day". This series is just not being given a chance to breathe!

The small problem is that the characters are ciphers. Amanda Waller is so bloodthirsty that I feel like she must be the Earth-3 evil version of herself, but maybe it's just bad writing. Superboy similarly is acting out character, but at least it's a plot point leading to our annoying cliffhanger. (Want a complete story? NOPE.) And then there's Peacemaker, Talon, and a few no-names, WHO? I barely know.

Which is all a shame, because there's some good stuff here, particularly the Future State setup, and the pushing of things in that direction.

So, kinda intriguing, but heavily weighted down by continuity and character problems. A big slick volume correctly highlighting the Future State stories and intermixing TTA and SS might be much more successful than this mess.

One volume in, and this is easily the third-best Suicide Squad run after Ostrander and Tom Taylor. The characterization is sharp, the stakes are clear, and the team is a new, fun ensemble featuring movie carry-overs like Peacemaker and a revamped Bloodsport, comic relief wiseass Culebra, and genuine curve ball Superboy (Conner Kent). The plotting is satisfying and twisty, and there are lots of juicy mysteries sprinkled throughout; it's an engrossing read!

There are only two things holding this book back from being an unqualified win.

First of all, this volume is absolutely hamstrung by tie-ins. The first two issues are from the horribly misguided "Future State" event which essentially reimagined every DC property as being set in a dystopian cyberpunk future of some sort-- and in those issues, we learn that Waller has created an authoritarian "Justice Squad" to rule over Earth-3 with an iron fist (for some reason). Then the first issue of the book proper takes place in the midst of an unrelated Batman storyline, and there's a gap between issues #3 and #4 where the volume omits a tie-in issue of Titans Academy, of all things.

Secondly, the book has no clear political messaging-- which is kind of important when you're dealing with the Suicide Squad. Rather than carrying out missions for the U.S. government in this volume, Waller is recruiting for her planned Justice Squad and building up to an invasion of Earth-3. Why? Because she's "tired of losing"-- she's apparently become demoralized by the repeated failures of her Suicide Squad tactics and has decided to seek out an alternate world to colonize that "wants to be saved" (i.e. is willing to submit to authoritarian rule for the greater good). I guess she settled on Earth-3 because she heard that everybody there was an @$$hole, so she figured she'd fit right in.

Now, don't get me wrong: I don't hate this direction. Waller comes off as worn down and sad here, making this the most complex and human portrayal of the character since Ostrander. But I do have to wonder where she's getting funding for an operation that literally doesn't benefit anyone on her Earth, and only really serves as a salve for her wounded ego. Pretty sure the U.S. government isn't gonna be interested in establishing peace on Earth-3 (unless... ah, man, I really hope this turns into an explicit allegory for colonial imperialism and the Iraq War, because if it turns out that Waller talked the Americans into financing her puppet Justice League on Earth-3 by promising them oil rights, I will cackle like a madman over here).

Anyway, it's good stuff! Not quite great, but very good.

This was...different. I haven't read any of the other Infinite Frontier or Future State comics, so the Future State issues just really confused me. And really, even the other issues were hard to follow but I just ignored any backstory and it was entertaining in that regard. We have a new Suicide Squad that includes and obviously John Cena inspired Peacemaker as well as Superboy of all people. Then the Squad ends up on Earth 3, which is the home of the Crime Syndicate. Now that is a cool concept, Suicide Squad vs. Crime Syndicate. This volume ends about the time that heats up, so the bulk of that story will be the next volume.

The art is top notch, and once you get a handle on the story, this wasn't bad. It just takes a while to get into, at least for me.

It was fun up to a point where you realize this Suicide Squad series didn’t add anything new. The start was fine. But as it crossed over Teen Titans Academy (which is really bad on its own), made this title lose its momentum. And as this first volume was closing, also did what little interest it had built.

Oof. Well, this was ... ok I guess? It's very difficult to find your footing when you're thrown into the middle of an event comic but back in the old days they'd give you some kind of explanation for what's happening to give you interest and motivation to explore further. This is just people hitting people for two whole issues. Not that the main feature storyline is much better here, which mostly amounts to people just hitting people. Apparently Suicide squad is not about nuanced storylines or clever ideas, it seems to follow the pattern of Waller says "YOU DO AS I SAY" for a few pages, followed by the team teleport somewhere, there's a brief attempt at a joke, some hitting and then someone turns out to not be on the level, or a bit wild or whatever, they all teleport back, Waller says "I CAN SET THE BOMB OFF YOU KNOW?" and they are off again for the next round. It's ok, maybe even fills a hole, but I have plenty to read and I can't see myself continuing until volume 2 is even cheaper than it already is. It's short though and I did like Psycho Superman who looooved Kryptonite. It's not all doom and gloom.

Nový run Suicide Squad bez Harley Quinn ?!?!? Shut up and take my money!!!

Generally I don't like stories that start at the very end and then go back to the beginning to show you what happened, especially if everyone is dead. What motivation do I have to become emotionally involved with the characters if I know just about everyone dies in the end? I'll give the series the benefit of the doubt though, because I did like the rest of the book, barring the first chapter. Although I do have one unanswered question, and I'm not sure if this is just a plot hole or foreshadowing, but Waller wanted criminals from other worlds to work on the Suicide Squad, like from Earth 3, but when everyone from Earth Prime visits Earth 3, they need a special device otherwise their brains go splat because of interdimentional-sciencey-reasons? But if that happens, why does Waller want to bring people from other worlds to Earth Prime? Like I said, either a plot hole, or there is some kind of chicanery going on.

As a longtime fan of the Suicide Squad titles, I loved this new direction the team and series are taking. The new concepts introduced with these new characters and members of the squad were fantastic to see, and the mysteries were so intriguing to dive into. From Amanda Waller’s powerful new endgame to the divide between her and Rick Flagg and the way Waller was able to gain control of Superboy all drove this new team led by the new fan-favorite character Peacemaker. The bright and intense artwork really kept me invested in this story as it evolved, and the chemistry of this new team was unique enough to make the title feel fresh and alive on the page. A must-read new direction for the squad!

Wow really really good, highly enjoyed ALL of it

Great story, great art. Characters even though some of them we've seen before are still different in some ways and at the same time not going too far off what we know. Really like the idea behind it and as a fan of Peacemaker I would love to see him in more comics, him bloodsport, Talon, all of them it was great too because it wasn't the team of suicide squad members we always see in the movies or the ones promoted so I liked meeting some of the new characters. And Waller is still and always will be the biggest piece of shit lol. Enjoy I definitely did

Gave it a chance, not for me.

It suffers from the first two issues being a crossover and then the first actual issue also crossing over with events in the Batman series. Which would be fine except the reader is not really told much about etiher of these events and instead must piece together what is important and not.

Also, didn't really care for this team. It seemed to have lost some of it's comedic charm.

This was pretty good. In keeping with the new film, Peacemaker is front and center as team leader. Other members include Bolt, new creation Culebra and Talon. It doesn't reinvent the wheel--there's missions, there's bomb explosions--but it's good enough if you want Suicide Squad storytelling. If there's a weakness to the volume it's that it's reliant on outside events, tying into the likes of Death Metal, A-Day (Batman event) and Teen Titans Academy in a few short issues.

Meh...
