After a drunken and adulterous night, Shane and Veronica’s marriage is on the rocks. In an attempt to save their relationship, Veronica books a couple’s retreat at an old lodge outside Ashmore, New York. Violent dreams, uncontrollable sexual desires and primal instincts haunt the guests at the old lodge. What is causing these bizarre urges? Will these savage imaginings become more than nightmares? As their stay at the retreat intensifies, will Veronica be able to save their relationship? Or will they succumb to the strange compulsions the house brings? Sometimes It’s better to die than to be awakened in blood.
I read Daniel Volpe’s debut novel BILLY SILVER a few weeks ago and the author impressed me a great deal. When I heard his second one was coming out, I had to grab it immediately.
AWAKENED IN BLOOD goes a very different direction and it is good to see the author wants to expand his horizons on not get stuck doing the same old thing over and over again.
This story is about a couples retreat outside Ashmore, New York. It is hosted by two therapists, husband and wife, who gives counseling to married couples who are going through a rough time. It is breathtakingly beautiful, but the four couples who go there for the week has no idea that the house has a very bad history. It wants blood!!
The four couples are Shane and Veronica, who is there because she cheated on him. Brandon and Cecil, gay men whose idea about their future differs. Diana and Marty, the former jock who is a bigoted, homophobic asshole and bad husband to boot – because every story needs one of them, too. Finally, Harland and Amanda, the overly religious couple who has trouble getting pregnant.
This story starts very much as a drama and turns splatterpunk, all with this light supernatural atmosphere throughout. If it sounds like I am keeping it vague, it is only because it reminded me of a movie which I can’t divulge or I will give the twist away.
Volpe’s writing is improving and, something I am very grateful about, he knows how to do a lot of character development in very few pages. For the most part, this was almost a 5 star read for me. However, I need to mention there is sex, sex and more sex. I don’t usually have a problem with it – after all, it’s something I love in real life as well – but the sheer amount of it made me feel like the story has more of an erotic feel with horror overtones…until the splatter takes over in the end.
This is not always a bad thing, I just think the tension could have been amped up if a little more time was spent on it. This book reads fast and it has a turbo pace toward the end, so there may be a lot of readers who prefer this writing style.
This is a really good story to read, especially if you like some haunted house with slasher kills kind of horror. I can highly recommend it to most horror readers who likes their stories just a little more on the bloody side...
Several couples with marital issues head out to a country retreat for some counseling. The house they will be staying in already has a bloody story attached to it, unbeknownst to the couples. Something about the house and the atmosphere brings out desires and urges that are unfamiliar to the visitors. Their hosts, or counselors, seem nice, but are they hiding something nefarious?
Daniel J. Volpe has crafted a fine and well-paced story that takes us to to depths of human emotions and the heights of violence. As we get to know the characters, we are drawn into their relationships and quirks. Something evil is lurking in the background of the lodge, and we are inevitably and immersively unable to escape the fate of each victim. If you like your extreme horror raw, this book is for you. Also, do not miss the author's excellent splatterpunk novella, Billy Silver.
What I liked most about this book was the characterization.
There were characters I liked and ones I hated and when he puts them through hell, it had an impact on the reader (me anyway)
To narrow down the plot, it's about an evil house that has a taste for blood.
I'm not into haunted house stories but Daniel Volpe's version of a haunted house story is obviously going to be totally different to traditional ones.
He kept it interesting and full of graphic sex and violence.
Definitely not one of his best, I think this was one of his first books? Anyway you can see by reading his later books how much his writing has bettered.
If you're a fan of slashers, this won't disappoint you.
Holy shit that was an intense ride. Straight in with the blood and gore for the prologue, then a great build up to full throttle sexy goriness!! I didn't want it to end!! Awesome!! 🖤
I absolutely devoured this book from the first bloody pages I was hooked..Sexy gore is a thing trust me.This is the second book I've read by this author and I've loved both. The build up was good the story was gripping it played out like a movie in my head I couldn't turn the pages quick enough.I'm slightly stuck in what to read now it's over.
Daniel J. Volpe is a very talented and twisted author! With his first outing Billy Silver it was fantastically grungy, dirty, high octane, in your face violence, and gratuitous sex. Not to mention curses, music, and sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll! (Or metal). Anyway, for Awakened in Blood by Daniel J. Volpe I was told the pace, mood, and styling of the book would be very different than Billy Silver. Which if you have yet to read Billy Silver I suggest you pick it up! So without further rambling I will tell you my thoughts on Awakened in Blood by Daniel J. Volpe.
Awakened in Blood is a story that begins with the lives of a couple, and their marriage is on the rocks. Veronica made a mistake, cheated, and came clean to her husband Shane. They both still love one another, but Shane is simply having a very hard time forgiving and moving forward.
After a couples therapy session Veronica announces to Shane that she has booked a nice couples retreat on the outskirts of Ashmore, New York. Shane is livid! Complains that they don’t have the money, he doesn’t have time off, and they have to cancel. Veronica causally let’s him know it isn’t refundable, and they could turn it into insurance because the owners of the lodge are therapists. Reluctantly Shane acquiesces to this proposal since it isn’t refundable.
Upon arrival they are blown away at the beauty of the lodge, the scenery, and just being away from the fast life. Their hosts Kathy and Sam seem like nice people, and are warm to greet them. Before long the other couples begin to arrive. Diana and Marty, Brandon and Cecil, and Amanda and Harland. Everyone seems at ease for the most part, are there to work on their relationships, and Kathy is great at keeping her guests well fed.
However, before long extreme lust begins to unfurl in the couples. So strong that they feel odd about it. Nonetheless, they go with it until strange occurrences begin to occur. Something just may not be right about this mansion sized lodge, it’s hosts, the other guests. Will Veronica and Shane kiss and make up? Will they rekindle their marriage? Or will their marriage splatter bloody on the rocks?
I must say I absolutely loved Awakened in Blood, and could not put it down! There is so many things happening that it is hard to put your finger on the outcome until the end. I personally love that! I think that makes a great story! This book has erotic scenes, erotic horror, a cursed land/house, ghosts, rage, splatterpunk, and a hint of a cryptid. Volpe masters misdirection with Awakened in Blood! Every time I thought I knew the outcome another curveball was thrown into the plot. I didn’t have the story figured out until the last second, and it left me pondering for quite some time! In fact I am still pondering, and am working on solving some of my deep questions.
I have to give Awakened in Blood five stars out of five stars! I almost deducted half a star, reflected a bit, and decided Daniel doesn’t take his audience for fools. He left some things up to reader interpretation, and to me that is talented. That is admirable. Although, severely different than Billy Silver Daniel still delivers the Splatterpunk goods in this novel! It also exhibits that Volpe can be diverse in his writing. The last portion had me on the edge of my seat, and the pace was extremely fast in the last moments. I think my heart rate was elevated. I was thinking, “What is going to happen?!”. I would highly recommend Awakened in Blood to any Splatterpunk horror fan. It is a must read of the year. Until next time, my friends.
This book has been on all my scrolling platforms so abundantly that I thought it was my screen saver photo. Everyone's raving about it and I must say, for good reason. The much anticipated release is out, and in your face. It's got all the bodily fluids you could ask for. And words... it's got those, lots of them. This was really enjoyable, and I recommend it for sure.
A beautiful girl stepped out from behind Veronica and Shane. She was tall, with blond hair, and ice blue eyes. She looked young, but already had the body of a woman.
Jonathan felt himself go hot and then cold. He shivered as the girl’s piercing blue eyes met his through the windshield.
"Maybe this won’t be so bad after all," he thought.
Okay, I'm not ashamed to say I was seduced by this cover at godless and envisioned a slasher with an axe welding perverse maniac. What I got.. was a pleasant possessed surprise.
It starting off with a few chapters of what was before, we are then introduced to the main couple and the breaking down of the relationship over infidelity, in other words extremely bad tequila sex with a work colleague. Heading off to a couples retreat for therapy, they are joined by three other couples with different levels of adversity in their relationships. Right from the start the presences of the house is felt through sexual tension, it does get steamy at times and then comes the blood shed for the houses thirst..
The story line is solid and the author does a good job with going between the different characters.
Brad interviews Brad about “Awakened in Blood”, the new book by Daniel J. Volpe. Let’s listen in...
Me: “So you read DJV’s new ARC?” Brad: “What the hell does that mean?” Me: “I was just asking, about Daniel’s new book, Awakened in Blood?” Brad: “Ohhhhhh! Oh yeah, yeah! That shit was awesome!” Me: “Oh? How so?” Brad: “What, you kidding me right now? First off, its DJ motherfucking V, as in, inventor of Billy Fuckin’ Silver, need I say more?” Me: “I wouldn’t mind...” Brad: (sigh) “Whadda ya wanna know?” Me: “Well, you could tell me about the new fucking book maybe?” Brad: “Like I said, that new shit was awesome, it was nothing like Billy Silver, which surprised me, it was more of an insane slow burn, it like, curb stomps you in the first 2 chapters, then settles in for a nice haunted horror slow roasting, ramping up and up until the shit really hits the fucking fan, and when it does, you’re getting fucking smothered and covered in all kinds of blood and piss and gore. Plus, Daniel’s style is really fluid, easy to read, easy for me to retain. I never got confused or crossed up any plot lines, I get befuddled easy. Not this time. It rules. IT RULES.” Brad: “That’s my kind of story!” Me: “Right? That’s what I’m fucking saying man! You gotta read this shit, seriously! It really hooked me, I read the whole thing in one fat session!” Brad: “Well, I did read it, because I’m you, Jesus you’re a fucking (redacted)!” Me: “That may be, but at least I read the best fucking shit, penned by the best fucking authors. No question about it.” Brad: “Now that’s a fact, but so do I. I mean so do you. I mean us....” Me: “...” Brad: “...” Me: “Wanna burn one?” Brad: (exhaling smoke) “Yes!”
Awakened in Blood by Daniel J. Volpe 5/5 Skulls ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
A really entertaining book which kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. I loved the characters and Volpe managed to make them come to life as he took the time to explain about their backgrounds in detail. The gore wasn't "Over The Top" but just enough to keep me interested...and the sex scenes flowed easily without being "Tacky"...Some well horny people booked into this retreat!!! 🙈🙉🙊 Well written and the ending was superb...Maybe I see "Awakened In Blood 2" in the future?? I do hope so!! 5 Well Earnt Stars 🌟⭐🌟⭐🌟from me 👏👍
From the awesome cover art to the very last word on the last page, I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. The author took a simple premise and used it to great effect in examining relationships and commitment. But, I think that's just the jumping off point. Similar to Billy Silver before it, this story takes a hard look at how human beings treat each other. Besides this, it's also just a fun story. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the setting, and the characters, especially when I found my heart breaking for some of them. This is a great book. It's rad to have brutal fun with substance!
I personally think it's tough nowadays to pull off a haunted house story. That concept has been milked dry over the years. But Volpe pulls it off with flying colors. Flow and pacing are excellent. The story is well-constructed and pulls you along effortlessly. It gave me a nostalgic feel for mid-eighties horror/splatter but with a deeper plot than was typically found in that era of movies. This is an impressive follow-up to Billy Silver. Looking forward to the next one from this author.
Daniel never fails to disappoint with his action-packed prose and gritty story telling. ‘Awakened in Blood’ is a slasher/supernatural horror with smut grade sex scenes that may lead to a ninja wank. Therefore, caution is advised if reading at work or on public transport. With each new release Daniel is asserting himself as one of splatterpunk’s premier writers.
I loved this story. Great set up, great meaty middle full of great characters and gore, fantastic ending. This is the fourth book I have read by Volpe and it is now my favourite. I read it by the campfire late at night. I had a great time reading this haunted tale.
This is such a good book that was recommended to me by some people in a group I’m in. A story about a couple and one of them cheated so they decide to help their marriage they will go to a couples therapy retreat. What turns out to be what should be a weekend of relaxing and sex turns into something you wouldn’t believe. I will say it starts off slow but, it needed to. It’s perfectly written and just keeps you on the edge of your seat. The ending that explains it all is fantastic! Check this great read out you will love it.
Daniel J. Volpe's "Awakened in Blood." is a far less scuzzy experience than his previous work, "Billy Silver." This slow burn of a book takes us to a something-is-definitely-going-to-end-up-very-wrong-here couples retreat hosted by an ill-intentioned couple with a creepy agenda. With an out-of-the-way cabin full of character development, and a consistently revolving bedroom door of boobs, butts and wieners, you'll definitely start to feel funny in the pants, before feeling guilty about feeling funny in the pants. A cleverly conceived twist on the haunted house genre, this old-school style romp works in a way that will make you momentarily forget about your own romantic woes, while coming to realize that tender moments and terrifyingly moments are often just a page turn away. Volpe's clean flowing prose makes the journey worth the payoff as a writer whose work I definitely plan on following closely in the future.
It’s the sound of me kicking myself for not reading this much sooner. Yep, I know I’m late to the party but I freaking loved this! I can now say I’ve read all of Daniel’s books. His writing is superb.
The scariest part? When each guest had to introduce themselves to a room full of strangers. Ugh, the horror! *shudders*
Just finished Awakened in Blood by Daniel Volpe. The couple in this story has been through it, an affair that is. Obviously, feelings are hurt and emotions are damaged. An opportunity suddenly presents itself, that might just bring their relationship back from the edge of destruction. Or will it? Just when you think that maybe there is a little sliver of hope for the lovebirds, you get splashed in the face with blood and guts. Yes, there’s a lot of sex, but none that I found did not apply to the story. It’s a couples retreat, why else do you go on a couples retreat? To try to rekindle and reconnect. Are the scenes graphic? Yes, but I don’t want to read about someone saying “penis and vagina” during sex. No offense if you do. If you don’t like very descriptive sex scenes and blood/ gore, then you should probably pass. For me and my house, it was a solid 5 bloody hearts 🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀
This book absolutely lived up to all the hype I have been seeing lately. This had it all, a mixture of sex, love, betrayal, paranormal, gore and blood, which is all the wonderfully and sick stuff I love about horror books. I definitely recommend this book!
Awakened in blood was my introduction to Volpe. I recently joined in on an online interview with him. He seemed like a guy I'd like to talk with. He mentioned Talia and a few other works. As he explained his feelings on Awakened in blood I realized that I needed to give it a shot. Man am I glad I did.
This story has plenty of extreme horror for sure, but he also provides the reader with very relatable characters. Flawed, imperfect characters, much like those of us reading.
I won't spoil anything as I feel each and every page has something of merit on it. I highly recommend giving Awakened in Blood a chance. You'll be very happy you did.
Another great read by this author. You can't go wrong reading anything he's written. I loved this book because the characters were so real and so different from each other. I loved the supernatural aspect and the right amount of gore.
I’ve read a few of Volpe’s books and I wish I had read this one first. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed it, but it just wasn’t as good as his other three books: Billy Silver, Talia and A Gift of Death. I would have preferred more action earlier on but this was still a quick, fun read with a great ending!
If you haven't read this then your missing out on truly fantastic horror novel, riveting story line,my first time reading anything from this author. I'll be definitely buying anything Daniel Volpe releases in the future.
I really enjoy Daniel Volpes' writing. However, this one missed the mark for me. I think it's one of his earlier works, so he definitely has improved a lot. This was just overly repetitive, not that engaging and if I have to read the word "pre cum" again I will lose my mind lol. It was more sex than horror for the majority of the book which gets boring after the first time.
The ending was OK, but it's pretty average and one to skip, in my opinion.
"Like she was Annie Fucking Oakley and born with a gun in her hand."
Maybe I should of read this one first. Don't get me wrong, the story was great but my one wish is that there was more blood and guts. That came to late in the book for me. Knowing that this was Volpe's first book and having read all his others. Billy Silver, Talia, (which is my favorite by far), A Gift of Death. His writing just gets better and better!! The blood and guts and gore get so much better. The stories get better!! Even though this one fell short for me it is still a great story.
