It is under the title Monet to Picasso that the Albertina presents its extensive holdings of classical modernist paintings, which come above all from the Batliner Collection. The overview of the most interesting chapters of 130 years of art history made possible by this permanent collection is unique both in Vienna and in Austria.
I bought this book when visiting Vienna this year and had the pleasure of seeing this exhibition in Albertina. It gives a great run down through this era of impressionism and beyond and I could look and read about paintings which were understandably very crowded in the gallery.
Great catalogue book to accompany the exhibition and works well as a stand-alone as well.
I had the great pleasure of visiting the Albertina recently while on vacation in Vienna. By far the highlight of the museum for me was the Batliner Collection. This book presents beautifully rendered images of some of the most famous works, grouped into the major schools of art. More text is shown for each of the pieces than would typically be found in the museum. I think this book stands on its own even for those who have not visited the museum. For those that have, it serves as a wonderful reminder and reference for this amazing collection of modern art.
Beautiful book of a spectacular collection in Vienna. I wish there had been more information on how this collection was built up. Don’t miss this museum if you go to Vienna!
Visiting Albertina was an awakening experience. I felt touched, understood and enlightened, as if I discovered a part of my soul there, scattered into centuries of Arts and sculptures!
It has deepened my understanding about the modern as well as the renaissance Masters to a new extent, which I never before thought was possible.
The descriptions and explanations (summed into this book) helped me to understand the massage hidden underneath the allegory, ornament, thematic, technicality, the way Braille helps someone blind.
