Anitra Pollard has lived in Blueberry Beach all her life, an idyllic small, lakeside town where regular people go to escape real life.
Unfortunately Anitra’s real life couldn’t get much worse, despite the idyllic setting.
Her husband left not long before her oldest son was diagnosed with leukemia. Worse, the head doctor on the team assigned to her son looks very much like the man she had a short, but very sweet, summer fling with…and the father of the child she carries.
Her life couldn’t get any harder or messier, but she will let nothing get in the way of getting the very best care for her son, even if it means staying married to her cheating husband to keep his health insurance and rebuffing the overtures of the doctor who thinks he recognizes her.
Thankfully she has the support of her friends and neighbors in Blueberry Beach – her safe harbor in the middle of life’s storms.
But even they can’t protect her from the heartache of losing everything she’s always held dear.
Will her new baby be the beginning of tomorrow’s blessings?
What a heart-wrenchingly sweet romance. I wasn’t sure how Jessie was going to pull off Anitra’s story but she told it with grace and dignity. Jordan’s death broke my heart, but rather than the end, it was written with hope both for Jordan playing baseball in heaven, and his mother finding love unexpectedly in the arms of John, his oncologist and an unexpected friend. Scripture says we are given beauty for ashes and joy instead of mourning. This is a great description of this book. I loved it.
This is the second book in the series. A sad, but sweet love story, though difficult to believe it took so long for John to recognize Anitra after their romantic encounter.
This was a heart wrenching story. It was sad to see Anitra lose her son to cancer but I loved how the town came together to help her out. I also like that she was able to find love again with someone who would treat her with kindness. I liked how this book showed what being a good neighbor looks like and that we don’t need to struggle alone.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Jessie Gussman has a knack for writing about imperfect people and situations that just feels like a breath of fresh air. Tomorrow's Blessings was a wonderful story of unselfish love, God's love and grace, and a community and friends taking care of each other. I would definitely recommend this book!
You are going to need your tissues as you read this sweet and very poignant story. It is a story of love, heartbreak, healing and of renewal. Anitra is a woman with an immense inner strength and fortitude. She nursed her terminally ill son on her own, and though she grieves his loss, she knows in her heart that he is without pain now and playing baseball in heaven. She also knows that God saw fit to bring someone into her life just as she was losing her son along with another unexpected gift. John is a doctor who has seen the circle of life many times in his care of young cancer patients. Heading up the new cancer wing at a hospital in Blueberry Beach would eventually free up more of his time and give him a chance to write books, and perhaps have a personal life for a change. He never expected to meet a pretty woman on the beach at sunset or to have a passionate interlude with her a few nights later. John’s new job at the hospital brings him back to Blueberry Beach a couple of months later and he doesn’t realize that she is the mother of one of his young terminally ill cancer patients. John even works with the townspeople to help keep Anitra’s diner afloat, though he doesn’t know she is his mystery woman. It isn’t until her son’s funeral that John finally realizes that Anitra is the mystery woman who captured his heart on the beach, and that their passionate night together had unforeseen consequences. There is a lot to sort out and to deal with even if they believe that God has guided them to each other.
I am loving this new series of books. They are not as lighthearted as some of the other books in Jessie’s catalog, but they are beautifully written, captivating and include wonderful messages that we all need to keep in mind. The characters are fascinating and so very relatable. I can’t wait to read more books in this series. I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Anitra has lived in Blueberry Beach all her life and loves it, but when her husband deserts her for another woman and her son develops cancer, she feels rather alone - so much so that she makes a bad mistake one night with a man she knows nothing about. When he moves to Blueberry Beach a couple of months later, he is slow to recognise her, but there is still a connection between them. Following her son's death, Anitra is forced to decide what she wants for her future life - hers and that of the child she carries. Will she live in the past, or look to tomorrow's blessings?
I enjoyed my first trip to Blueberry Beach and was eager for more - and the author has definitely come through! Not only is the setting lovely, the characters felt real and I enjoyed getting to know them. As usual, the writing is good, the content completely clean and the story highly satisfying. While a central part of this story is something that should never have happened between two Christians, I was pleased that it was acknowledged to be the sin God tells us it is (but with the resulting child considered a blessing from God). For readers who have already read book 1, note that it takes place in the middle of this book (I was a little confused about the timing initially) - but each can be read completely on its own. I look forward to more visits to Blueberry Beach. Recommended!
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
I am really into this delightful and heart rendering new series by Jessie Gussman. She just has a way with words that pulls you into a story and keeps you submerged until the final heartfelt conclusion. This couple is just fantastic and seem made for each other, but there are a few heartbreaking circumstances that pull at them from the outside. The characters are so well scripted that you feel their presence as you are reading. There is always one bad apple in the bunch, but this guy seems to get his due by the end of the book. The storyline is devastating and yet a total blessing in another way. My faith has been a strong force for me in the past but seems failing recently. I keep wanting to ask God, why the children have to suffer, (He hasn't given an answer) This book seemed to open me up to seeking the Lord once again and came alive in a beautiful way, mainly because my best friend lost her oldest daughter yesterday. A beautifully told story that just grabs you and is so very difficult to set aside. I finished it at 2:30 this morning. Well worth your time! A good, sweet, faith filled romance.
I received an ARC copy of this book. This is my voluntary, honest, and completely personal review. VICKI FROM WYOMING
There is no greater pain for a loving parent than watching their child die and being unable to do anything. Anitra Pollard knew her son’s cancer had returned and there only experimental treatments were left as a last resort. It was hard to see the beauty in the world and not be angry with God, or not resent the man who had abandoned his wife and son to deal with this alone. When she crumpled onto the beach in her pain a stranger offered help and comfort until she could find her own strength. As they spoke in the darkness, Anitra felt safer than she had for a long time.
As a pediatric oncologist, Dr. John Chambers was used to helping families through the pain and emotions that accompanied their children’s illness but as he sat with, and comforted, the woman on the beach his protective instincts were aroused. Even without knowing what her problem was, he later found himself thinking about her and wanting to know her better. If he spent more time in Blueberry Beach, perhaps they would meet again.
This story made me cry at some points and made me happy at others. It was also a story of faith and hope. The pain that Anitra suffered is real for many families whose children suffer from life-threatening illnesses and is a reminder to be thankful for our blessings.

Grab your hankies, y'all! You're going to need them at the beginning part of this book. Anitra, an abandoned wife on the brink of divorce whose young son has an aggressive form of cancer, is overwhelmed when trying to keep her diner going while simultaneously keeping her son as comfortable as possible and staying with him during his last days. She felt all alone until the business owners of Blueberry Beach stepped in to run the diner for her. Then one night at her lowest point so far, Anitra went for a walk on the beach and met a kind stranger named John when he noticed her distress and stopped to comfort her. This is the story of Anitra and John and it is also a story of hope, redemption, and moving forward when life hands you its worst. There are no perfect people in this story--but it paints a perfect picture of God forgiving, loving, and holding on to His people even when they stop holding on to Him. Highly recommend! I was entrusted with a copy of this book by the author and this is my voluntary and honest review.

SO much emotions happening in this story with Anitra, Jordan, Iva May, John, Bill and the townsfolk of Blueberry Beach. I can't believe people like Danny and how they think they can treat people, I hope he never comes back to Anitra's life! She is a strong yet human woman, so much going on in her life, losing Jordan the brave young man playing on Heaven's baseball team. The un-planned pregnancy, not planned by humans - yet God had other plans for her and John. What an amazing man Dr. Chambers is, such a comforter, protector, caring and so much more! Those words could also describe the people/family of Blueberry Beach, all helping keep diner open, working a shift when they could, protecting Anitra when her Ex showed up. Iva May's secret and what the people will think of her, really made me think how bad can it be, these people are family, I am looking forward to the next book with eager anticipation!
Wow!! What an awesome book. I have to say that Jessie and Jay are a winning combination. She writes great stories and his narration makes them awesome. I have to say they did something with this one that has really happened before. My son was amazed. He asked me if I was ok. I was listening to the book with my headphones in and they made me cry. I had tears just rolling down my cheek. I can't say that I have gotten that deeply absorbed in a book to make me cry like that. Great job guys.
Anitra's son was dying of cancer and she felt helpless. There was nothing she could do to save him. So one night she went for a walk and met a man on the beach who made her feel good about herself.
I'm not going to tell you anything else about the book, execept I think you would really enjoy it like I did. I read the audiobook version and it was an emotional read. Not all my tears were sad tears.
I have now read 3 of Jessie Gussman's books, and have enjoyed them all. I think, though, that I'll have a special place in my heart for her Blueberry Beach series. I imagine I'll end up with them on my shelves.
It's real life. The characters go through really hard things, but it's real, and there's no unnecessary tension. You know, just for the sake of adding tension. Also, sin happens. We all know that. Jessie doesn't gloss over the sin, but she also doesn't allow the characters to wallow in guilt, which is a fine line, I think, but she does a great job with it.
In this book, which is number 2 in the series, Anitra's son is battling cancer. Well, I'm not going to give a recap; you can look at the book description for that. I like the way it started partway through the previous book, but with different characters. I like to see the timeline of things.
I highly recommend these books, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

It’s nice to see a Christian book where the characters have to work through a mistake vs being perfect all the time.
I found it odd John took so long to recognize her or that in this small town he never put 2 and 2 together. He was her son’s doctor, lived in her town and worked at her diner. He saw her AT the diner and in his exam room but never thought it was her?
The scene where she is trying to leave her son’s casket after the funeral had me in an absolute puddle, I never thought of that moment the way the author describes but what a totally heart wrenching moment.
Anitra gets over her son’s death seemingly quickly with John’s help and I found myself not understanding somewhat but with him having suffered so long I guess she was more prepared.
A feel good story, another one with some overly saccharine parts but I appreciate and enjoyed the overall storyline and message.

John moved to Blueberry Beach to open a new hospital and to get away from the rat race of the big city. He meets a woman on the beach and is instantly pulled towards her.
Anitra's world is falling apart. Her son's cancer is back and her ex-husband has stolen all her money. She meets a wonderful man on the beach but knows nothing can ever come of it. Her son is dying and there is nothing that can be fixed.
When the residents of her town pull together to keep her business going, she is so very grateful. It allows her to spend time with her don before he goes to heaven.
There is an unwavering amount of love and support shown in this community. They take care of each other as life throws curves ~
An unexpected story of loss, grief and new beginnings.
Having read Book 1 in the series, I anticipated Anitra's story and hoped the intrigue related to the Dr/cook would be explained in this story... and it was!
Such a heartwrenching, beautiful redemptive story - a different journey to Adam and Lindy in the previous book, but redemptive nonetheless. It's funny how we Christians screw up our fair share in life, but many "get away" with their ill-advised choices. But a pregnancy out of wedlock? You can't hide it, and for some bizarre reason it's often at the top of the sin list for Ms Judgy Christian. 😉 I was SO RELIEVED the characters in this story decided to love in action in Anitra's time of grief regardless of any added circumstances. And John? Ah, loved that man. 😍
Be prepared to cry, to smile, and even to laugh a little bit. This story will break your heart and then put it back together again. There's hope wrapped up in profound sadness, and it's one of the most unique beach romances I've ever read. Anitra experiences one of the worst losses imaginable, has to deal with an ex who has betrayed her on multiple levels, and yet is still willing to risk opening herself up to hope.
Jay does an amazing job reading the story as always. I continue to be amazed by his wide range of voices that allow the listener to have an experience that leaves no doubt about who is speaking, and what's going on with the action. But the emotions, the heart-wrenching intensity of the struggles and cares these characters go through - Jay gets it across so well!
Anitra has lived in Blueberry Beach all her life. Her marriage has fallen apart and her son is dying of leukemia. Her business, a small restaurant, is being tended by friends in her community while she tries to spend as much time as possible with the dying child. Her husband left her, but now is trying to get money from her in the form of the little she has managed to save. On top of all this, she is pregnant, the result of a dalliance on the beach. She takes her son to a new cancer specialist and the doctor is the man who fathered the unborn child. What else can go wrong?
Read this book to learn the outcome. I enjoyed the book and I hope you enjoy it also!
A very somber tale. I must say I couldn’t get past the first chapter when I was bawling my eyes out. It’s never an easy story to listen to about a child with terminal cancer. Anitra was on the brink of a collapse when she sought solace while walking along the beach at night. I admired her strength. I doubt I would be able to hold on as well as she did. She had many more issues to deal with in her life as well. It was encouraging to see the neighbors and townspeople pulling together to help her out. They also stood beside her when her selfish ex showed up threatening her. It wasn’t enough that he withdrew all her money from her savings. This story has a happy ending though so there’s that. Thanks Jessie and Jay for this poignant story.
We've met John and heard about Anitra in the first book in this series. She is tending to her dying son and he is a doctor who has volunteered to help keep her diner open. They already have feelings for each other but their previous meetings were anonymous and she doesn't know that he's working in her diner.
Unlike the author's other books, this book tears at your heart with a dying boy and his grieving mother. I loved the depth of emotions of this story. Very well done.
I think anyone except for young readers would enjoy this book.
I received an advance reader copy from the author. This is my honest review.
Heartbreaking news added upon some extra challenges, Anitra has had more than her share placed on her plate. When her small community rallies around her to help her with the dinner as she takes care of her sick boy. John is leaning towards a move in his career and personal life. When he meets a woman his spirit is drawn to her. He just doesn’t know her name. As he hopes to see her again he volunteers to help at the Cafe in the morning to help the owner who son is sick. As the Lord works in small and simple ways they are able to help one another.
Anitra was introduced in the first book in the Blueberry Beach series, Yesterday’s Treasures, so I already had an idea of who she was and the heartbreak she was going through.
In this book John is introduced and we get more of the story and Anitra gets her happy ever after. It was a good book, with lots of lessons and some religious overtones. I really liked the faith Jordan, Anitra’s son had.
At times the story moved a little slow, but I loved how Anitra and John’s relationship developed. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narration! I look forward to more of Jesse’s books.
This sweet romance has wonderful characters in Blueberry Beach Michigan. It is a small tourist town where the residents have kind hearts and help their neighbors when they are down on their luck. Anitra and John have a one night stand on the night her divorce becomes final resulting in her becoming pregnant. John is a pediatric oncologist and when he moves to Blueberry Beach permanently, he finds he really must find the woman that intrigued him enough to do something he had never done before. I listened to the audio version for free on YouTube, narrated by Jay Dyess who does a great job on the various voices.
Jessie's books are edifying. I would say they are also light reads, but she does tackle difficult topics. Bad things happen to the characters or because of their choices, but there is redemption, grace, and forgiveness. She weaves in truths about how we should leave as Christians, which serve as reminders as I listen along.
I've listened to her books on YouTube "Say With Jay." He's a great narrator, even for the women's voices. It's the type of book that you can listen to while doing something else. Any can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend starting the series in order as several connect characters and places.
I was so intrigued by Anitra and John's story in book one. This is not a light hearted read but I did walk away with a smile and encouraged. Not only does she have joy in the midst of sorrow but hope for the future. How Anitra and John cam together was a shock but I did like how the author dealt with it. So many times we condone or excuse sin. I'll admit this wasn't a one sitting read. I had to put it down to think about what the characters were going through - their feelings as well as their circumstances. Loved how her friends and the community came together for her. A sad but happy book.
I liked that fate brought Anitra and John together by chance while walking along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Anitra was dealing with life and later her consequences and John was dealing with some major changes in his life. I also liked that everyone helped Anitra run her diner when she was busy with her son, Jordan who was dying from cancer. It was nice how everyone in the small town of Blueberry Beach came together in her time of need. I especailly liked the spiritual parts and inspirations in this book and how we all should show our gratitude daily.
I really liked this story. Anitra owned a diner at Blueberry Beach. Her son, Jordan, had cancer, but it was no longer in remission.Anitra enjoyed walking to the beach and watching the sunsets. She had been standing for a while, tuned and started towards her apartment, felt dizzy and blackness coming over her vision. A man ran to her and was asking If she was ok. He sat beside her and assisted her to sit. His name was John, but at this time they didn’t exchange names. He just sat and held her. You will enjoy this story, don’t hesitate, read it.
