My father talked about Atlantic City the way some women talk about their ex-boyfriends. No good. Avoid at all costs. Soul-sucking even without the demons. Never mind that we lived across the country where, by day we worked as mountain guides, and at night he trained me to use my magic—not that I was allowed to showcase it. That was a hard no. So I hid my powers the way he hid his bourbon—until his murder.
With nothing to lose, I hightail it to—you guessed it—Atlantic City, where I make a deal with a group of monster hunters, including Saxon, a hot hybrid that ignites a helluva lot more than celestial fire. If I survive the takedown of an all-powerful demon, they’ll help me investigate my father’s murder. So what’s a girl to do when the chips are down?
Annabel Chase is the author of urban fantasy and cozy mystery novels. She would love to live in a magical town where she can shop at Ready-to-Were for the the perfect outfit, flirt with hot angels and vampires, and cook gourmet meals without exerting any effort. Visit her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Annabel-Chas... or on her website at www.annabelchase.com.
Love a good box set, it’s the equivalent of a good Netflix binge!
This is the story of Callie. Her hero’s journey of loss, discovery, plot twist, battles, plot twist, love interest plot twist and reconciliation of her loss and discovery.
There is enough originality in the world building and the character premise that the stories make for a really good cohesive read. There is action, adventure, vampires, werewolves, angels, elves and a whole range of pesky deamons. I would love to read a book set in the time of the plagues although that might be a little triggering right now in good old 2022.
The author throws in a little romance as well - done in the right way, not everyone wants to read pages of how the female protagonist needs to psych herself up to take the girthy D, or how many she shattered because of life altering Os. Instead it’s written sweetly and focuses more on the characters rather than lengthy sexy times.
Is it a wholly original story, no. However there are some elements that are, and it’s enough to give the overall themes a nice flavour - like when your favourite chocolate ice cream is rereleased with raspberry swirls instead of chocolate fudge.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
3.5
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Annabel Chase brought us another awesome world - the characters were amazing, I personally loved Liam the sex starved pun dropping hybrid (once you got past the 1st book, his sex starved attitude diminished and he wasn't a pre-teen attitude kid any longer), I am a huge fan of puns. I felt like I was in this dystopian style world and thought nothing of the supernaturals walking amongst the humans. Any conflicts that came up, were taken care of, the pace of the stories was the type that keeps you picking the book back up when you had to set it down.
I am assuming this series was written a few years back, since I have read Annabel Chase’s most recent series (Crossroads Queen, which is one of the best series out there and one that left me wanting more ❤️). This series in particular was a fun read with great characters, plenty of magic, action, funny moments and all around a wonderful read. Not as great as her recent books, but good enough to put a smile on your face and keep you well entertained. Enjoy!
This series takes place in the future and there are scads of paranormal creatures, including demons. There is also total magic, hybrid creatures, murders, mystery, violence, and a whole new world order. For the most part, all creatures have pretty much divided up the cities and a lot keep to themselves in their own "territories". It is action packed and highly entertaining if you like futuristic fantasy.
I am sorry, but this book didn’t impress me much. The world building was sparse, the characters nice but generic and annoying in their immature reactions. The plot was the most lacking in my opinion. When you as a reader have better ideas than the main character, are frustrated that the characters simply don’t raise the right questions and not to mention that the supernatural aspects are mentioned but not used by the characters, the book simply gets frustrating.
First story in years that kept me so riveted that I stayed up all night to finish. Well done! I’ve been a fan for awhile but this is by far her best work. Each character was so clearly defined that as the reader you are drawn in, laughing, fighting, and falling in love with all of them. Would love an epilogue storyline.
This amazing series follows Callie and her group of "colleagues" through a twisty-turny journey of team-building, revelations, and all-round excellent urban fantasy world-building. Bonus points for the use of Atlantic(a) City!
I nearly put this book down several times. It nearly pained me to continue reading. While I found parts of this book interesting it left gaps that I feel could’ve been filled. It isn’t a terrible book but not one I would be excited to recommend.
I thought the Spellbound series was good, this is SUPERIOR!! My sadness is that it’s over and that there truly doesn’t seem to be a way to have a sequel, or to have characters visit as this is a unique world. I don’t know how I missed this series!!!
A great story that unravels at the perfect place. You don’t get lost in what did I miss you get here moments, and nothing drug out making you think “get on with it!”
This was a good set to read and get lost in, but had to many jumps in fantasy that sometimes lost this reader. However, it is a fairly good read when you want something light to keep you entertained. Good job.
This was a really world fantasy world and had many well developed characters. It was a little rushed at times and there was little spice but the overall plot was engaging and fun with lots of good humor thrown in
So this was an entire series, I felt like there needed to be more information. Callie kept gaining powers and learning new things with out real explanations or real meat to the story... it fell flat and I wanted to like it.
