Rate this book
My grandma is one of the last true masters of witchcraft. I'm nothing. Yet someone thinks I'm too dangerous to live…

Josefine comes from a prestigious line of witches, but she's never possessed so much as a breath of magical ability. Nevertheless, life in her sleepy German town is peaceful, and working in her grandmother’s herbal remedy store keeps Josefine happy.

But then her grandmother is killed in a merciless vampire attack. Wounded and alone, Josefine finds herself the target of a relentless pursuit. Each day is a battle to survive, so when one of the most powerful and dangerous vampires alive unexpectedly offers his help, a skeptical Josefine is left with no choice but to accept.

Lucius is not only as handsome as the devil, but he’s also as mysterious as the night is dark. The dashing vampire couldn’t care less that Josefine’s hostility for him is transforming into a fiery passion, and yet, she needs him more than ever.

The catastrophic secret surrounding her grandmother’s death will place Josefine in the very center of a war that could kill her once and for all, along with every soul on earth.

I really enjoyed this one!! I actually thought it was a standalone, so much to my surprise there’s a hell of a cliffhanger. Ugh, I don’t want to wait for book two!!!!! I want it now!!!!

Josefine is a great main character because we don’t focus on her talents or her beauty and romance. Instead we’re totally focused on her lack on magic and no romance is to be had whatsoever. Which is totally fine. This stands perfectly fine without some lovin added in. Which for me is rare. I just love… well, love!!!

I also adore the other characters, even the ones that don’t make it to the end. Sorry for the mild spoiler, but not everyone makes it!! That was a bit of a blow, but oh the emotions!!!! I loved feeling so much while reading this book!! It was so well written that I was totally immersed in the story. It probably helps that I really enjoy books about witches and this one is no different. I just like the idea that Josefine is a dormant witch and it’s such a huge part of the tale.

I highly recommend this to YA lovers who like books about magic and witches. There was lots of drama and action to keep this story oh so very interesting. The characters draw you in and keep you in the thick of it the whole way!!

Thanks so much to NetGalley, Timeless Papers, and Denise Daye for the opportunity to read this for my honest and unbiased opinion.

I am so so excited to finally see Josefine in the hands of readers! A few have commented on how much they like the raven, and I absolutely love it! Bertram is a major player in the series and will get an even bigger role in book 2 and 3.
So will a certain romance that book 1 suggests and that readers are rooting for. ; )
As I'm writing book 2, I keep thinking of all of you and how excited you will be to see a certain two people finally, well, don't want to give away too much.
Stay tuned for book 2 if you want to find out what happens to the witches, vampires, old gods, and Bertram of course! Enjoy more of the plot twists that you all love so much. I tried really hard to get away from the usual book themes of witches and vampires, and I think after reading comments of readers that we are actually onto something! Yeay!

Ok, enough...I'll stop.
I hope you all will enjoy Josefine as much as I do! And if not, that's okay too. I still thank you for reading it. You could have picked a number of books but chose this one, and for that I am very grateful! : )

P.s.: Please note that this is the first in a series. As a small-time author and full-time mom, I have to cut books off at full length and make it a series to be able to provide for my family and not cramp 3 books into one. This is not a money making scheme like huge publishing houses do it, but simply a time/money balance. It takes about a year to write and publish a book at the length of Josefine. The second one in the series is on track for publishing in spring...stay tuned with me! :) You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!

Thank you for your understanding!

Best wishes and stay safe,
Denise

This book annoyed me so much and yet I really want to read book 2.

I loved the story and the authors writing style. The author writes beautifully and, at times, it felt like I had stepped into Narnia’s winter. The main events in the book are well written and I could easily immerse myself in these scenes. I found it a breath of fresh air that the book was set in Germany with mentions of other parts of the world, rather than the usual US or UK settings.

By the time I was past halfway through the book I was so over the main character, Josefine. I couldn’t help but wonder why she was the main character. She seems to offer nothing to the storyline. She is hurled through event after event and her role is simply to respond rather than act. The side characters get to do all the acting and decision making while she follows. She’s not one for asking questions and is half hearted in her attempts to get answers. I wanted her to grow a spine.

Fortunately for the main character, her side characters are fabulous and varied. They hold the intrigue, backstory and answers, which they dish out very slowly. The events and the side characters keep the plot moving at a steady pace. The overarching plot, controlled by the side characters, is gripping and I am keen to see where it goes.

This book is listed as Paranormal romance and fantasy. I could see the fantasy but there was next to nothing in romance. Just a passing unrequited attraction and a hint of interest elsewhere.

I look forward to reading Book 2, in spite of Josefine.

When one question leads to more …

An other author I follow since her debut novel, since she made me travel back in time,, and forward, visit the XIXth century Wild West, witness a modern day arranged marriage and them travel to Romania to visit a crumbling castle.
So I did not really not know what to expect from this new adventure.

Now I have turned the last page, I am left with mixed feelings, I knew it was a series but I hate cliffhangers. So here I am, with nothing having been resolved.
In fact this first book is maybe the part which glue the protagonists together.
I can’t say I really warmed to Josefine, she is the one always behind, the one people sacrificing themselves to protect her. After from her point of view, everything she knew as thus turned to ashes, so she has to cope with her new circumstances. Still, she is more a weight than an asset. And in fact she seems to be more a pawn than anything else in a game grander than she can imagine.
Yet I have the gnawing feeling, she is not whomever she was made to believe herself to be, she is probably more ancient in some than she thinks, and Lucius is in some way linked to her previous life.
I liked her three other companions, Fabiean the childhood friend, Luna and Lucius.

After I must say I am not a great fan of fantasy, I like a good paranormal story but fae, witches and vampires do not appeal to me. Hopefully the writing is good, but I struggled to invest myself in this story, plus the slow progress of the narrative, the absence of romance did not help.
And now at the end, I am left with no questions answered and even more coming to mind.
But for readers fond of this kind, it is probably packed with everything they might like, 3.5 stars.

Magic mixed with vampires and a war that no one saw coming. When I started this book, I thought it was going to be about Josefine finding her magic through her grandmother and finding who she is by going on an adventure with Frank. That turned on its head once her grandmother was killed. I loved how a group of mismatched people came together for the same goal of defeating the First Vampire. I want to read the second book so badly. It ended on a cliffhanger and I just want to know what happens. Does Josefine have magic? Is she more powerful than everyone thinks? Will she fall in love? I just want to know!

The synopsis of this book got me so excited to read it, but by the end it was a massive let down. Josefine’s grandmother, one of the oldest and most powerful witches, is murdered by the First Vampire and a vampire-witch hybrid. Now, they’re after Josefine. She must first go to visit the home of the First Vampire’s brother because… well actually I’m not really sure why. Then she needs to traverse through an ancient forest to go to the Order because… well I also don’t know why. And this is the biggest problem with this novel.

The entire time Josefine is in the dark about why she needs to go to the Order. It isn’t until about 70% into the book (yes… 70%!!!) that we’re told she’s being used as bait to get the First Vampire to the Order so they can attack him. Okay… but still doesn’t answer why the First Vampire is so gung-ho about killing Josefine in the first place.

See, Josefine is what they call a “dormant witch,” a person born of witches but without powers. They’re viewed as a disgrace and a doormat in the witch world. Essentially, she’s nothing special. Now, there are hints that Josefine actually harbors a very intense ancient power. We even get a battle scene where we see a glimpse of it. Do we ever find out if she truly harbors this power and see more than a glimpse of it? No!

A vampire named Lucius joins Josefine in her trek through the forest (along with a couple other side characters). It’s never really explained why Lucius shows up in the story at all, but I digress. Josefine finds Lucius incredibly attractive, almost to an unbelievable extent. Josefine made clear at the beginning of the novel that she has never felt any sexual attraction to anyone before, but she just so much as lays eyes on Lucius and is literally obsessed with him?

“But for some reason, the thought of killing Lucius was unimaginable to me. I’d rather do something crazy like this. But why?”

Yes… but why?! Too many questions are raised and none are answered. There’s a brief moment where Lucius says something along the lines of “You don’t remember me?” Woah! Back up! Josefine and Lucius have met before but Josefine has no memory?! Wow, this seems interesting and could easily explain why Josefine is unnaturally attracted to Lucius. Do we ever find out more about this? No!

Also, Josefine interacted with a handful of vampires throughout the book. Each time she would think of a question the vampire would answer it out loud. Josefine would then wonder “It’s almost like they can hear my thoughts” or “Wow, did they just hear my thoughts?” Do we ever find out if vampires harbor this ability or not? No!

Wayyyy too many questions were raised and not one was answered. I understand this is set to be a series and you want to leave some lingering questions to draw readers into book two, but when no questions are answered in a 500 page novel it turns me off from reading book two.

All that happened in this book is that Josefine's grandma died and her plus three others traveled through a forest to get to the Order. The end. The book ends where it should’ve started in my opinion. The whole novel is a lead up to the Order where finally we’ll get some answers, and it ends as soon as they arrive? The entire journey in the forest could’ve been summed up in 3-5 chapters max, not half the book. I nearly DNF this but decided to continue since some fight scenes happened and it made the reading a little more interesting. Otherwise it was just them wondering, walking, and waiting the entire time.

The only reason I’m not giving this 1 star is because the writing itself is really good. The characters have interesting and unique personalities, the world is captivating and I want to see more. Everything about this novel should’ve worked. The plot was just so boring and essentially nothing really happened in this book. I may give book two a chance to see if the story really gets going, because I think when it does that it’ll be quite the ride. Regardless, I think this one can just be skipped.

Oh, wow! What an awesome way to start to a series! This book is loaded with adventure, mystery, witchcraft, secrets, vampires, with a sprinkle of romance and feminism via a strong main character.

Josefine comes from a family of witches going way back in the family tree. Oddly, her witchy powers have yet to manifest, if they ever do. She has made peace with her dormant powers and is living happily with her grandmother, a wise witch herself. But when tragedy strikes, she is forced to leave that cozy home and embark on an adventure of a lifetime with an usual companion and a deadly vampire following her!

I cannot wait for the next installment in this series!

I received a copy of this book as an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

The main character, Josefine, is a young woman who comes from a long line of witches. Her parents died when she was very young and she has lived with her grandmother since then. Her life has been relatively normal until one evening when it all changes. Everything Josefine thought she knew about herself, her family, and the world she grew up in, shifts dramatically leaving her scrambling to keep up.

Overall I quite enjoyed this book. It is an easy read and interesting enough to keep coming back to. By the end of the book there is still enough mystery that I’m looking forward to reading book 2. However, I did find that at times some of the character reactions outpaced what was happening in the book. Josefine remarks at one point on her feelings for a main character and it confused me because they had not had a lot of interaction that was witnessed by us, the reader. It could be assumed that they did but it definitely needed to be played out. As a result I would have liked to see more development in the relationships between the main characters and Josefine.

Thanks for the ARC and I look forward to reading book 2!

Josefine: Shadows of the Witch is an exciting tale of magic and intrigue. The main character Josefine finds herself lost within the magical world that she thought that she knew, when an event turns her life upside down and she discovers that people have been keeping secrets all around her. This book takes place in modern day Germany, yet the world is one of old gods, witches, and vampires. The concepts may be familiar to fantasy readers, but many of the common tropes are missing and that is refreshing. The settings are colorfully described and very detailed. From beginning to end, it is a very fascinating read and will keep you on your toes.

5 stars for this enthralling story. It’s captivating, well-written, and full of vivid imagery. I’m dying to read the next book!

THE PREMISE:
19-year-old witch Josefine, aka Fin, has no apparent active powers and now she’s on the run, pursued by an ancient psycho vamp that killed her grandmother and cat for some magic rock. Turns out a friend of hers has a secret identity and mission involving Fin, but he isn’t forthcoming with answers. The only person who will give her any answers is Balthazar, an ancient vampire that runs an organic farming business
(despite not eating any himself and is struggling to parent a rebellious goth teenage witch named Luna. Fin is not having a good week.

At least her raven (Bertram) stuck around, guess he likes Fin more than she thought even if he clearly thinks it’s funny to prank her sometimes. (I can relate. I just know my cat thinks it’s hilarious to trip me when I’m carrying a large pile of laundry.) Clearly people expect her to do something important to stop this ancient psycho vamp (including said vamp as he’s clearly hunting her), but everyone’s either fuzzy or tight lipped about the details. Fin picks up some allies on the run: Fabeian, Luna, and Lucius. Lucius, a vampire, is as helpful as he is enigmatic. Fin finds him suspiciously charming. There’s something about him she can’t place and she feels strange around him sometimes for reasons unknown. With all these mysteries, Fin soon begins to wonder if who she really is is a mystery even to herself.

THE WRITING:
There is just the right amount of world building so that you’re immersed and not confused without slowing down the story. The nature and origin stories of vampires, witches, and magic in this tale is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Clues are doled out at a nice pace to keep you constantly interested, thinking, theorizing, rethinking, and inching closer to seeing the full picture. (I have a few theories myself.) The mysteries drive the story, keeping the characters from being solely defined by their romantic interests.

This book has the beginnings of slow burn romance without a love triangle. It develops organically and is just getting started, instead of rushing and having the main character and her love interest get together in the first book. In fact, all the relationships, romantic or otherwise develop naturally and slowly. No insta-love, insta-trust, insta-hate, or insta-friends.

THE CHARACTERS:
Daye has created an array of lovable and fallible characters that are described vividly enough to picture and each have their own distinct personalities, voices, and speech patterns.

I love the main character. Fin, frustrated from still showing no signs of any useful witchy powers and being kept in the dark, has had about enough. “If death really surrounds me, maybe you should ask yourself if it’s a good idea to piss me off.” (Fin says to a witch that easily electrocute her with magic.) She may not seem powerful, but she’s no coward. She may be on the run, but she won’t be pushed around. And no, she’s not putting on any overly-fancy designer clothes (provided by the local organic-farming vampires) no matter how many days she has to wear the muddy pants and T-shirt from when she fled town. Just nope. Daye definitely doesn’t portray life on the run as glamorous. Fin is empathetic, kind, assertive, brave, loyal, hardworking, and occasionally impulsive. She sees the shades of grey in the world. She doesn’t excuse bad behavior, but she also doesn’t condemn those who make mistakes. She’s amazing without being put on a pedestal.

Lucius is, surprisingly, both secretive and frank. He’s intelligent, brave, rude, kind, loyal, and full of ancient knowledge. He treats others as equals and has a quirky sense of humor. Impressively, Daye made Lucius likable even though you don’t know who he’s working for, what inhuman vampiric abilities he has, or what his plan is. Fin is tries hard not to develop a crush on this strange vampire. He’s a good love interest.

THE ENDING:
The book ended at a natural stopping point. While it doesn’t end of a cliffhanger, things are not is fully explained yet, many mysteries are still open, and the plot of Fin’s story is just getting started. There has been enough plot progress, clues, and reveals that at the end of the book, I feel much closer to answers and will eagerly anticipate more story.

There is some death and violence in this book, but nothing graphic, excessive, or unsuitable for young adults. Thanks to Timeless Papers and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Josefine lives with her grandmother, who is a powerful and ancient witch, in a small town in Germany. Tired from years of wars, power plays, and such, the grandmother now sells herbs and spices to tourists. Although Josefine was born in the same bloodline, she's a doormat...a cruel term for dormant witches with no powers. When her grandmother is murdered by a powerful being, Josefine finds herself being hurried away to the Order in France, according to her grandmother's plan. The same creature wants to destroy her, although she has no idea why, but then, she has no clue why everyone is trying to protect her. She only knows that her grandmother's plans are they only thing standing between the creature and the end of humanity.

Josefine is easy to root for as she suffers under the loss of the person she loved most and refuses to go against that trust even when things go crazy. Her decisions are mostly understandable as she tries her best to work with a sudden thrust into a dangerous and confusing situation. The characters around her don't have quite as much depth, which I missed, but then, one of the main drives in this plot is that no one really seems to know what's going on, and for reasons of self-preservation, they keep everything about themselves close. So, the depth builds as the story happens.

The plot is woven with action, intrigue, and secrets, and everyone is in a mad race to avoid the very evil First Vampire, while trying to follow a plan laid out by Josefine's grandmother. And not everyone involved even knows this much. So, there's a lot to unfold as Josefine blindly trusts whatever her grandmother claimed she should, while battling to stay alive and knowing that her life, thanks to her complete lack of powers, is truly in the hands of others...and these others have so many dark sides, that it's hard to know if they can be trusted, too. So, there is a lot of tension and twists and turns.

There is death. There are vicious vampires, heartless witches, and ruthless gods, and an approaching war. And among this, there is romance. Sort of. It'd be wrong with all of the blood, confusion, and loss for Josefine to flip head over heels and suddenly fall in love...I mean the girl has a massive portion on her plate. The author kept this end very slow burn, and while this first book does leave suspicions of possible future romance pairings, it's not fleshed out yet. I appreciate that, since there is so much more to come.

This does leave off with a cliff-hanger, and I do wish book two were already out because I would have instantly picked it up. But fans of secrets, vampires, witches, ancient gods, intrigue, and action will enjoy this one.

Josephine begins with the first novel in the series, Shadows of the Witch. As this will be a trilogy, this book is a great intro to the world and characters; however, a “cliffhanger” ending is always frustrating as I want to know what happens next. (It is not a typical cliffhanger as the story ends at a stopping point where it will most likely pick up in the sequel.) The story centers on Josephine (Fin), a 19-years-old dormant witch, who’s originally unaware of her own magic although she comes from a long line of witches. The story takes place in Germany in the town of Rudesheim on the Rhine River where Josephine lives with her grandmother, who runs a shop selling herbs and remedies. After a vampire kills her grandmother, Josefine is forced to align with others and be on the run.

The romance in this story is hinted at, but it seems that I will need to wait until the second to see it further develop. As a character, I am on the fence with Josefine as I liked her yet I did not quite warm to her. I am sure there is more to her than meets the eye and she will go through some development as the series moves forward, so I just have to read the next installments to find out more. While Josefine was not my favorite in this installment, the side characters were incredibly enjoyable. Fin’s raven, Bertram, has some nice humorous moments that break up the action and mystery. Other enjoyable characters are Luna, Fabian, and Lucias, who all join Fin on her journey.

The world-building is immersive as there are many places explored in this story along with the vampires, witches, and magic. While the pacing of the story may not be non-stop action, it was a great set-up for the rest of the series. There is still some action, so this was a great introduction novel. The story is great for readers who love witches, vampires, adventure, mystery, and everything else in between as it gives the reader a bit of everything. There are many questions that need to be answered and I cannot wait to find them! Overall, this novel makes me very curious to read the sequel, Shadows of the Sword.

**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Timeless Papers, for the opportunity to read this entertaining novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**

If you're looking for a great adventure with a relatable main character, LOOK NO FURTHER!

Josefine comes from a long line of witches; however, her own powers have yet to manifest, if ever. Regardless, she has found peace and a good life living under the roof of her grandmother, one of the oldest and wisest of witches.
However, tragedy strikes and "Fin" is forced to flee her home and on a journey she could have never expected with the least likely of companions with a deadly vampire hot on her trail!

whew, this book is a good one!

I was immediately sucked into Josefine's world. The imagery is vivid. The lore and way of life is detailed but simple enough for even us mere mortals can understand.

Fin is a great main character. She is relatable and the love she has for her close knit family can be felt in each page. She is fierce and a little naïve but someone everyone can root for from start to finish.
All of the characters are fleshed out. Those supportive of Fin are easy to like and nuanced in their own way, even the Raven. The villains are ruthless and complicated, which makes for an even better read.

The plot is fascinating and easily digestible. There is a level of mystery of in the story that makes it easy to keep going because who the heck is Fin really!? The adventure she embarks on is dangerous and it could lead one way or the other but it hooks the reader in! The pacing is wonderful in that just when you think everything is calm, something happens! Also there is a HINT of a possible romance and I'M READY FOR IT. Just really great story telling.

There's nothing I didn't like about this one! Can't wait for book 2!

This book is the perfect read if you are a fan on genres such as Fantasy and YA or NA.

The author's writing style was truly magic in itself. Captivation is inevitable when it comes to this author's writing. It painted the story so well, I felt like I was a character myself. This story was, while still following the basic fantasy set up, new. For instance, this story had a setting I had never been to before. In most stories, they follow the idea of UK renaissance like world and every once in a while has a sprinkle of Irish or American ideals. However, this one took place in Germany.

Another win for this book was that the side characters were PHENOMENAL. They were a great group of diverse personalities and really made this book what it was. They helped move the plot along very well, which leads into my first loss for this book.

I loved the idea of Josefine being this girl with her grandmother gone and really hoped that would give her kind of an edge and make her more cutthroat, however I feel like it made her the opposite. She never made any of the decisions or called any of the shots. It made her seem like a very lackluster main character at some times. I felt as if she liked to just cruise through while the side characters focused on making the legitimate plans and gave answered to the important ultimatums in the conflict.

Overall, this book was great, but while it did not exceed expectations, it checked off majority of my boxes and you can believe I will be reading book 2.

The thing about writing fantasy stories is that the characters, localities and so on can be redefined however you want. So this book, like many another, is a war between good and evil. Here witches are good and vampires are their evil opponents. Where do humans fit in? Somewhere in between. Hated by some, liked by some and tolerated by others.

It begins in Rudesheim, a town on the Rhine River, where Josefine, a young woman who is the main character, lives with her grandmother, a noted and powerful witch. After her grandmother is murdered, Josefine is taken to a certain vampire as directed by witches. Josefine herself is not a witch, but one can't help but feel that witch-like powers for her are only a few pages away.

There is danger, trekking through the forest and running the gauntlet of magical enemies. I couldn't help being drawn along by the story. Unfortunately for me it does not conclude; it merely stops. So, what happens now - well you have to read the next book in the series .But why is the word invicta (undefeated) of magical significance? That is certainly something to find out in the next book.

I confess I prefer books that are complete and stand-alone even if they are part of a series. In this case, though I realise that there is much left to happen and it could not all conveniently be put in the one book.

Well worth reading if you enjoy the genre.

The book was supplied to me by the author, but my review is voluntary.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book for review!

Josefine is a tale involving witches, vampires, and ancient creatures that test your imagination. The side characters in the story add intrigue to the story, as they all traverse to figure out what happened to Josefine's grandmother. It is a very easy book to flip the pages and get a fun take on the vampires versus witches idea. I think this series has a lot of potential, it just did not quite hit the mark for me.

I feel like many things happened in the book, but it did not go anywhere. It had the potential to go much deeper than it did, but it just seemed like Josefine was following side characters through the woods for the majority of the novel. I enjoyed the writing immensely and could not stop turning the pages, but I kept expecting more action to occur. I also was very interested in the romance with Lucius, but all it amounted to was stolen glances and adversities to touch. I understand wanting to have a slow-burn romance, but I just wanted a little more out of it. Another thing (I don't know if this is my fault or not) is that I did not get a great idea of the setting. Sometimes I pictured it as being in a magical olden land, but then they would casually mention a Mercedes or limousines. I was just very confused during the book.

Witches, vampires, magic. What more could I ask for?

Josefine is a young, "dormant" witch who is forced on the run after an ancient Vampire kills her grandmother and sets his sights on eliminating her. She is forced to trust people, and vampires, she's never met before, including one who makes her blood boil, both in good and bad ways.

I was attracted to this book by the description but I do think the story lost me a bit. It's mostly Josefine running away. There is a brief description of life with her grandmother and then it jumps right into Josefine running from evil, a brief stay in a mansion, and we're on the run again. Then, the book just kind of ends. Not a cliffhanger in a good way, the story just somewhat ... ENDS.

There is a hint of a romance between Josefine and another character and because of that and Bertram, Josefine's bonded animal, I am going to read the second book. If for no other reason than I need to find out why Josefine is so important and what powers she truly has.

I gratefully received this ARC in exchange for honest feedback.

Thank you Timeless Papers for the ARC! I love a good witchy read, but the whole falling in love with a male vampire plot line is so overdone, and still to this day, completely unoriginal. It's 2021, not 2007. However, the description of this book hinted at giving this unoriginal plot idea a new twist, which is why I decided to take the bait.

I can't necessarily say I was disappointed, the romance portion of the book was intriguing. It was the more of the writing style that was a bit too choppy for me. Dialogue scenes need to flow, but right off the bat, we'd have one character say one sentence, only to be followed by 1-2 paragraphs of exposition explaining in great detail the setting or backstory of something until the another line of dialogue is said again. From a reader's perspective, that can get pretty confusing real quick and possibly make some readers give up way too early.

But overall, it was a fairly decent read in a very unique setting that kept the story fresh. If you are a sucker for gorgeous vampires as the love interest, then this book is definitely for you.

Josefine is a story about a young woman from a witch family, however, she is also what is refered to as a dormant witch. Even though she is from a powerful line of witches, her powers have never surfaced. Josefine has believed her whole life that she was nothing special until her grandmother is killed by the first vampire. Soon Josefine is forced on the run for her life and must get to the order with the help of some unlikely allies.

I find witch novels hit or miss and this was definitely a hit. I was not expecting to be pulled into the story as quick as i was. The story builds really well and is hard to put down but also very easy to get back into when you put it down. This story has a lot of action spread throughout the whole story. I really liked this whole book since it wasn’t just about magic but war and other paranormal creatures as well as old gods. I think this a was a great combination of supernatural beings for those who like paranormal genres.

I truly enjoyed this book. The author managed to draw me in from the very beginning with wonderfully descriptive writing. I must admit, I haven’t read too many paranormal books, But all I want to do is go and stay a night at josefines house, the way it is written about just sounds magically (no pun intended!). The characters are all brilliant in their own right, Josefine is so strong and determined and so much like her grandmother who I love, because she’s like a grandmother should be… protective and kind with a side of sass.

The world with Denise Daye introduces you to in this book is quite simply fascinating, mixing witches, vampires and the old Gods, intertwining their stories to tell an addictive tale. I can not wait to get my hands on book 2 because I need to know what the hell is going to happen between Josefine and a certain vamp!!!! Finally, I really really want To read about the moment Josefine sheds the title dormant witch and comes into her own.

Josefine is a fast paced novel with a wide range of compelling characters. I loved the concept behind the narrative and the world the author is starting to build - but I’m a sucker for anything remotely witchy anyway! I was drawn into the story from the first chapter, although character development started to stall a bit once more were introduced.

Whilst I enjoyed the story, I felt that scenes of particularly frenetic action could have been described a little slower and in more detail so that readers can understand better what’s taking place. I think there’s a romantic relationship building between two of the characters, and that could have been explored more throughout the novel - although I’m aware this is the first of a series, so I understand the author didn’t want to give too much away too early.

I’d be keen to read future books in the series if those action scenes can be sorted out!

What a whirlwind of a story!

Our MC begins as a lowkey alcoholic with a sassy crow and a pet cat as her best friends - but soon evolves into a strong, mature woman in the face of tragedy.

Luna, Hilde, Fabiean, Lucian and Bertram were all secondary characters that I genuinely wanted to know more about because the author took the time to flesh out their personalities. Like Bertram! He's a whole crow, but I can confidently say that he's my favorite character.

The romance definitely took a backseat in this book, which was refreshing in way because we really got to focus on Fin's growth. So when we did get glimpses of romance between Lucian and her, I almost didn't care for it because I know it wasn't valuable to this story.

The ending was satisfying but there are a lot of unanswered questions that I'm hoping gets revealed in the next book! All in all, I enjoyed the story and recommend it to all my paranormal-fantasy lovers out there :)

Dormant witch...

It must have been agonizing to hear these words since childhood, especially since your grandmother was one of the last true masters of witchcraft.

Josefine had to face this every day, but her grandmother would always tell her that her powers might come out soon. She was losing hope now that the most important person in her life was killed, and she could not go back to her home because she was being hunted.

Worse of all, Josefine makes an ally with the witches' greatest enemy, a vampire. Her heart skips a beat for Lucius, a mysterious pureblood who is more than meets the eye. Together with Luna, a dark witch, and Fabiean, a human, they are all set to go to the Order, fight the First Vampire, and hopefully find the First Witch.

I really thought that I wouldn't like the story, but it was written well, though there were some parts that were a bit confusing. Still, I am excited for book 2!

This book is very interesting. It really pulled me in. It has fantasy, mythical, and even romantic aspects. Josefine believes she is a regular human that was raised by a very powerful witch. Her grandmother, who raised her, dies. She is swept away immediately to an unfamiliar area with new people. She meets Lucius. Lucius is not only as handsome as the devil, but he’s also as mysterious as the night is dark.

There is a catastrophic secret surrounding her grandmother’s death that will place Josefine in the very center of a war that could kill her once and for all, along with every soul on earth. It's intense and so action packed. The world building and character development in this book was amazing. I'm excited for the next one. I enjoyed it. Definitely recommend!

Thank you both Author and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this.

Witches. They captivate me in so many ways, and it's always a gamble on how well their story will be told. More often than not they are made out to be the ugly, villainous women who haunt our nightmares. However, this story was far from that. I was sucked into it and openly wished that I had a grandmother similar to Josefine. We follow her as she uncovers the truth of their family's history, why she doesn't possess the same magical capabilities that generations before her did, and why her family is now a target for vampires and other paranormal creatures.

I really enjoyed this book, and I find myself impatiently waiting for it to be on a shelf at my local bookstore so that I am able to add it to my library.

I received a complimentary copy from the author through Voracious Readers Only. This is my honest review.

I enjoyed reading it. I like the characters especially Josefine. The story is mostly in Josefine's point of view and shifts in some chapters into 3rd person point of view. It was great to witness the characters' growth in the story. I didn't like Luna early in the story but eventually liked her towards the end. By the end of story, you'll feel like Josefine is your bestfriend already. The plot is cohesive, fluid, easy to follow and of course with plot twists. This story is mainly like a journey set up for the next book.

I do want to know what will happen next, so I guess I will wait for the next book.

The author generously provided a copy of this book via Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review.

I was very excited upon reading the blurb of this book, and even more so after reading the prologue. It had me hooked from the first page, but unfortunately for me at least, it went downhill from there.

The writing style left something to be desired. There were a lot of added details that I think were unnecessary and took away from the flow of the novel. More editing would have been of benefit.

This was also missing the romance that was hinted at, but I feel it will come into play in the second book. Despite not being blown away with the story, it did keep me wanting to know what happens next. I will read the next book as I want to know what comes next for Josefine.

Thank you netgalley for providing an ARC for an honest review!

I was instantly hooked on the premise of this book and loved the witchy vibes it was giving off. We start with our Protagonist Josefine and as the premise says her life is essentially turned upside down as she finds out she is from a long line of witches. This book is gripping and does have a lot of twists and turns that keep you hooked but I did find that it dragged a bit too much for me towards the middle. I’m still greatly looking forward to the 2nd book in this series. The authors writing style is very interesting and keeps you hooked. I did not fully get the romance aspect but hopefully it will be further be expanded upon other in books! Once again thank you netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.

Casual witches, vampires, and a side of mythology in modern Germany. When danger comes to her grandmother's apothecary shop, young witch Josefine flees with her raven familiar and a friend with secrets to find answers and safety with the mysterious Order sworn to protect humanity from vampires and other evils. This story is 80% mad scrambling to the secret hideaway (think Eragon or Shadowfell), 10% I-have-no-idea-where-these-monsters-came-from-but-they're-intense, and 10% chilling in a fancy mansion. The last chapters felt like they came to a stopping point more than an ending, and I'm totally with Josefine - can someone please just spill the secrets already! Oh well. Guess I'll let it tease me into the sequel.
