Four years ago, he gave his heart to a rookie pitcher and struck out. Now, they have a second chance to get things right.
No longer living on the streets and surrounded by men who supported him, Cody Marshall’s life was finally looking up. He hadn’t expected to hook up with anyone on his first spring training trip, but there was something about Nick Stone that called to him. The chemistry was instant and intense. Cody finally allowed himself to believe he could have something good.

And then, Nick left…

Nick’s spent the first four years as a professional ball player trying to prove he deserves his spot on the roster. His biggest goal is to finally step out of the shadow of his father’s legendary career. He hasn’t forgotten the one person who made him feel alive and seen, nor has he forgiven himself for breaking both their hearts.

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed, purple haired mom of two kids, one of which was a thank you present to her husband for letting her get a Staffordshire Terrier with more anxiety issues than Sloan has, which is saying something. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself in a good book and forget that she has somewhere to be.

This one just fell so flat for me. I enjoyed the other books in the series but I was bored midway through this one. It felt choppy and I couldn't connect with these two at all. Hoping Clint's book is better.

4.5 stars

This is only the second book I've read in Sloan Johnson's Homeruns series, but after reading it I will go back and read the two I've missed. While I'd love to say that gay athletes are now welcome in professional sports, the truth of the matter is that's not always the case but in author Sloan Johnson's world they have a much better world to live in than most. This book shows us young love between a rookie pitcher and a young man who was taken in by some professional athletes after being disowned by his family, the heartbreak of letting go even when it was for the best, a not so joyful reunion four years later, and the building of a relationship as they let go of the past and look to the future. It also shows the harsh realities of playing in the minor leagues, the politics that go on behind the scenes and the strain of maintaining a relationship during the season. There were a lot of highs and a lot of lows in this book, but that is what I loved about it. Sweet Spot was about the love of the game of baseball, but it was also about the perseverance it takes to be successful both on the field and in the game of life.

Four years after a very brief but very passionate affair Nick Stone finds Cody Marshall is now an intern with Milwaukee Mavericks, the major league team Nick hopes he will one day be a part of. Nick finally sees his chance to apologize and make things right with Cody, but four years and a whole lot of hurt have made Cody stronger and Nick soon finds out that apologizing may be harder than he expected.

There was a very interesting dynamic between Nick and Cody and given their past that was expected, but it was more than that. With Cody working for the PR department of team where Nick's father is the GM there is more to their friendship and eventual relationship that just them. Given that the men that have helped Cody are all in some way connected to the team also adds to the complications, but somehow these to manage to figure things out. They struggle throughout this book first with trying to keep their relationship a secret and then with the separation that comes from them both traveling for their jobs with different teams. At times Nick made me a little crazy with his insistence to do everything on his own and even his petulance at being passed over for a spot in AAA ball, but I could also understand his frustration at the situation. Cody for the most part was a rock, very even keel and although younger than Nick a bit more mature about things. I appreciated that they were both there for each other when they needed a boost and that despite their separation and a few moments of doubt they were pretty solid. It helped that they both had people around them to give them a pep talk or some tough love when they needed it.

What surprised me most about this story was Nick's father, Marcus who not only accepted his son was gay but supported him thoroughly. I guess that shouldn't have surprised me given the fact that several of his team members are gay, but it was nice to see a parent whose child's sexuality was a non-issue.

I'll admit at times I felt a bit lost because I hadn't read the other two books in the series and I think especially the third book would have given me a bit more insight to some of the things that happened in this book, but overall this is a standalone story.

The struggles, the sweetness, the emotions and the sexiness all made the Sweet Spot a homerun for me!

Seems that Sweet Spot really does tick a lot of boxes for me!

I have adored each and every book in the Home Run series to date, and I have to say, the title is exactly what book number 4 is. It is sweet.

Nick and Cody's spring fling has been over for 4 years, but neither has forgotten those weeks.

Now, years down the track, their paths have crossed again and as much as they want to deny it, that attraction, that spark, that want is still there.

Oh my heart broke for them both when their paths crossed again. Cody for all the hurt that he went through when Nick left, and Nick for knowing that he caused the pain, all the regrets he has held onto for years.

Cody and Nick both fell hard back then, but now their hearts could be absolutely obliterated if things don't go well.

I loved that as much as this is their story, it tells us to also follow your dreams. Follow your passion. Follow your heart.

And if you are lucky, they will lead you back to where you really want to be.

I loved how Nick's relationship with his father blossomed through his story. I could understand why Nick would try to distance himself from his father, but was so happy where they ended.

I loved that we got more of the boys from the earlier books in the series. Adore Adore Adore Sean and Mason more than ever. But each and every one of that extended family feel like they are part of my family.

Cody and Nick's story had a gritty feel to it. Their relationship, their problems, the hurdles they crossed all had a realism to them.

Sloan Johnson has hit another home run with Sweet Spot, and I can't wait to see what she brings us next.

A wonderful book that teaches a valuable life lesson. I really enjoyed the realistic portrayal of how difficult life is for minor league players and the impact that has on the lives of not only the players but those who love them. I instantly connected to the leading men and was cheering them on as they struggled to not only get over a rocky past but forge a bright future. The bedroom scenes were toasty hot and the dialog crisp. I'm looking forward to reading more from Ms. Johnson soon!

Sweet Spot is the fourth book in the Homeruns Series and I have loved each and every one of them! Sloan has hit another Homerun with this one as well. Her writing sucks me in and I don't want to walk away until it's over. Even then, I want more. I love all the characters. They are definitely a family that sticks together. I knew that before but in Sweet Spot it was more important than ever. I met Cody in Triple Play so I was excited that he was getting his own story with Nick, a triple A baseball player determined to make it to the bigs...

It's been 4 years since Nick walked away from Cody. They fell hard and fast during a two week period of spring training for the Mavericks' Triple A team. Nick spent his days on the baseball field and Cody spent his working towards graduation. But their nights were spent together away from everyone and everything. They were in their bubble until it burst. Nick was a 20-year player that had to prove to himself and to the league that he wasn't only on the field because his father was the Mavericks' GM. And lately, he was losing focus. He needed to keep his head in the game without distractions. He had to let Cody go. And now, four years later, he was face to face once again with the only man that ever had his heart. He should be surprised to see Cody again since he does after-all live with Mavericks' players but to see him on the team bus during spring training was a shock to his system and to every last muscle in his body...

Cody has followed Nick's career. He knew he would see him at some point during the six weeks he was taking pictures for the team as the social media coordinator but he didn't know how he would actually feel when he saw him. He should hate him for what he did four years ago but he doesn't. They were young kids back then but now was a different story and when Nick said he wanted to be friends again, he was torn. He knew he couldn't be friends with Nick, he would want more. Could he really trust Nick not to walk away again if they started a relationship?

Nick regretted what he did to Cody and was determined to prove that he could be trusted. He was still working his ass off to get to the Bigs but he was older and needed to know if he could have both of his dreams become reality. He was told by many that he was a great player but needed to work on his head game. He was thinking too much. And he found that instead of Cody being a distraction, he was his calmness but would it last past spring training? They could be headed in totally different directions in the end. And could Nick get it out of his head that he is one amazing player and not just there because of his father?

I love Cody and Nick!! They are so cute, funny, supportive, and so damn lovable. The way they are together is what couple goals are all about. So adorable. It was great to catch up with the rest of the Mavericks and their loves. I can't wait to see who is next up when it comes to the series!

Quotes:

“Trust me, he’s great eye candy but the boy has more issues than the archives at the library.”

If you don’t stop to think about what you want outside the park, there’s no way you’ll survive within it.”

“Good, because I’m not in the mood to play nice.”
Cody slid his arm around my waist and pressed into my side. “And I love it when you want to be naughty.”

**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**

Nick and Cody met when they were young. They fell for each other quick. It was taking moments when they could at spring training. Nick was early in his baseball career. He was still fighting for his place, even though he was the son of the GM, he wanted to make it on his own. He had to work harder, throw harder and focus harder than his competition. He didn't want anyone saying he had a hand getting to the big leagues. That meant cut out any distraction in his life, Cody included.

When Nick decided Cody couldn't be a distraction, the break up was quick. Cody was devastated. It took him a long time to get over Nick to be able to live a normal life. When he accepts an internship with the Mavericks, he knows there is the possibility to see Nick. It will be hard be Cody is determined not to let Nick's presence get to him, until Nick asks for a chance to apologize. Nick wants Cody to know how sorry he is, Cody wants Nick to see he's unaffected, until he isn't. Can they make it work again? Is Cody willing to risk his heart? Will Nick keep his priorities straight, realizing there is more to life than baseball?

I enjoyed this new Maverick's book. I love seeing the past characters in snippets, seeing how there lives are moving on. Ms. Johnson got me again with this one. I found it to be emotional and at one point was almost brought to tears. At times the story did slow down for me, but I knew to hang on that it would grab me again, and it did. I like to progression of Cody and Nick's relationship and the fight they had in front of them. The relationship wasn't easy but it was worth it and those are the best kind of reads.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

I am a really big fan of sports romances, and this series of MM ones is very, very good. I highly recommend that you read them from the beginning, so as to not miss out on a whole heap of hotness - however if you want to dip a toe in, then this is not a bad place to start.

A big part to this story is the way that one's own head can cause more trouble than really exists, and how easy it is to deny oneself happiness for fear of doing the 'wrong' thing. Nick is so worried he will be judged due to his father's position, and so sure he would disapprove of his sexual preferences that he sticks his head in the sand - and lives a lesser life because of it. Cody was a casualty of those fears before, and really isn't sure if he can put his heart in such a vulnerable position again ... Watching these two men grow up, grow brighter and create a really hopeful future makes for a very hot, passionate and heartwarming story. Having friends around them, that we've met in previous books is the icing on the cake!

Thank you again Ms Johnson, a great addition to the series.

I gave this book 4.5 stars!

While there was off the charts chemistry between Cody and Nick there is a life lesson in here to. If you keep at your dreams, one day you will achieve them. I love how the secondary characters help make this book. The storyline had a realism feel and some pretty Hot scenes. It did take me a few chapters to get into it but once I did, I couldn't put it down.

Four years ago, it took no time at all for Cody Marshall to fall for the rookie pitcher at spring training. While their lives were nothing alike, Cody understood Nick Stone's insecurities and pain. And then... Nick left. Eventually, Cody found his own passion and landed a dream internship with the Mavericks. His life was finally turning around. And then... Nick came back.

Just like the first time they met, Cody finds himself falling for Nick. Unfortunately, Nick is still plagued by the belief that he is where he is because of his father. If they're ever going to make it, Cody has to prove to Nick that his success has little to do with his name and everything to do with his drive to succeed.

Two men, both close to having everything they've wanted. Will they be able to find the sweet spot between dreams and desire?

I could waffle on about the lovely romance between Cody and Nick and how they work to get over mistakes of their past, but for me the highlight of this story is Nick's struggle to make it to the majors.

Being the son of the club's General Manager Nick doesn't want any unfair treatment because of who is father is. It is a huge hurdle for him to overcome because he isn't getting unfair treatment and his own paranoia about the issue is holding him back. Nick's struggle to get to where he wants to be had me in tears and I felt every emotion, every frustration, right along with him.

I loved Nick and Cody and I loved seeing the struggle of the younger ball player that we get in Sweet Spot. After spending the time with the guys from this series I want to go back to the beginning and read them all again.

Sweet Spot lives up to its tittle, it will leave you a sweet spot in your heart once you're done with this book.

The awesomeness continue in this series, this installment will bring a smile, a tear, and a lot of love for this characters.

Cody and Nick's journey is a sweet, but strong, lovely yet upsetting love story. Don't get me wrong this is a good thing, when a book has you loving the characters but at the same time you want to shake them up, that only means one thing the book is amazing .

You don't want to miss this installment, I am a huge fan of this series and this book does not disappoint. I was happy to see this two young love birds finding their happily ever after.

Nick is trying to make it to the big time. However, he is letting his mind keep him back thinking thst everyone sees him as making it because of his father.

Nick had a prior relationship with Cody and reunites with him during the new season when Cody interns for the team.

Can they put their past behind them to rekindle their relationship? Can Nick get past the mind game? Can Cody for Nick for the past?

This book is fantastic. We meet up with prior characters and get a resolution to past damage done...

Do not miss out on this book. I loved Nick and Cody and their love

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The chemistry between Cody and Nick was off the charts. Nick Stone has a lot of pressure and hype to live up too, as his dad was a professional baseball player and now he’s the GM of the Mavericks. He’s also determined to do everything the hard way as he doesn’t want to show anyone that he’s supposedly getting special treatment because of who he’s related too. He’s been basically avoiding his father or well any talk about baseball when he’s home. Nick’s also been avoiding his teammates as it’s hard to tell who genuinely wants to be his friend or whether they’re just being nice because of who his Dad is.

Nick was seeing Cody but Nick put way too much pressure on himself and was upset that he didn’t get called up so he thought it would be best to cut ties with Cody even though it would hurt like hell, he thought it needed to be done. He’s been focusing on the game ever since and he still thinks about Cody a lot but doesn’t think he’ll ever see him again. Little did he know that day would come soon enough. Cody’s father was an utter a*sehole and kicked him out after he got caught kissing another boy in the locker room. He ended up at a group home for LGBTA+ teens and then when the owner closed the home he ended up staying with Drew, Bryce and Eric since Drew was Cody’s mentor while in the group home and then they became friends as well as family.

Cody has recently graduated from college and gets an internship with the Mavericks in their social media department. While him and Drew are on their way too spring training Drew asks him about Nick who Cody doesn’t want to talk about but Drew warns him that he may see him as he’s trying for the majors again. Both Nick and Cody are shocked to see each other after all this time and I’m glad that Cody eventually gives Drew a chance to explain why he left? I thought this was a great second chance romance.

Man, the altercation at the hotel with his homophobic a*sehole of a teammate was pretty hard to read but I loved that it was the catalyst that Nick and his dad needed in order to fully reconnect. As something Cody had said helped them start to reconnect earlier during spring training. I’m glad Drew finally got his closure since his attacker was finally found after all these years. In some ways it was a surprise who it ended up being but then also not, as I was wondering how the person knew Drew was gay since he wasn’t out at that point. I’m looking forward to reading Clint & Kevin’s book next. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

Sweet Spot is a marvelous sports romance. The fourth book in the Homeruns series, Quinn Ward is re-releasing these books that were formally released under the pen name of Sloan Johnson.

This time around we get Nick and Cody's story.

They started something years ago, but now they are back at Spring Training together. Nick's reunion with Cody isn't so easy. Cody's still hurting, angry and sad, that Nick dropped him four years ago.

Nick's the coach's son, so he has a mess in front of him. Either the coaching staff is too tough on him, or people assume he's only had success because of his father. It's a tough role. And, as a baseball fan, I appreciate this aspect a lot. I've seen it time and time again, so I love that the author uses this in their novel.

They have to deal with an ass of a teammate who we hated in the past. They have to deal with Nick's mental block. And they have to deal with being together again, as well as coming out.

Their story includes some homophobia, a hate crime, some understanding, and some forgiveness. There are some tough to read moments, but it's also sweet and tender, as these two men are perfect for each other.

I absolutely love the baseball compound that Drew and the guys own. They're all supportive and loving to each other and I adore the way they took in Cody. Love it. In general, I enjoy every moment of this big group of friends and teammates throughout this series.

And, yes, Nick and Cody are hot together!

I love Sweet Spot. This entire series is one of my guilty pleasures. I have read them all many times and am thrilled that Quinn Ward is re-releasing them. If you haven't yet read them, so do. They are fantastic!

Rough Going

This one has a lot of elements that saved it from being tossed, not the least of which is Cody, and the best of it being that the unique Milwaukee gay family that has come together in the previous three books is also there.

This one brings together the sweet natured but somewhat untrusting Cody from "Triple Play" and Nick, who has never appeared before but is the 24-year-old son of the son of the general manager of the Mavericks. The setting is four years after "Triple Play," which might be a bit of a stretch considering all the goings on here, but it works.

There are several subplots, including an explosive one which I expected in the previous book but which, on reflection, belongs here. And the book is more geared toward the business and political part of baseball rather than on-field exploits--and this is handled very well, indeed.

Why only three stars? Well, I simply could not get myself to like Nick. He is so self-centered in his confusion over his identity and his guilt over having dumped Cody four years before without an explanation that it took the whole book for him to really get over it. I also despised the fact that there wasn't a plausible delineation of the fact that Nick was purely a top and Cody so submissive. It did very little to amp up any sympathy I may have had for Nick.

There is a bonus at the end--the first chapter of the next book in which two of the sneaky characters author Johnson brought into this book become rather opposite MCs. I will complete this series, hoping the next two take me to a level of satisfaction the previous three had.

We met Cody in the last book as Drew worked with him at the center and eventually welcomed him into their home. Your heart couldn't help but hurt for the boy who was kicked out of his home, spent time on the streets before finally settling in to the shelter and working hard to make sure he got a scholarship.

Nick's path was always baseball and as the son of a former player/now GM, he felt he had to prove that he wasn't riding his dad's coattails into the MLB. The prologue was heartbreaking. Nick did what he felt he had to do for both of their sakes and it's just so sad.

Nick spends years in the minors and Cody goes on to school and ends up interning with the Mavericks. They rekindle their relationship as both men have feelings for each other, but it isn't an easy road to the HEA. Nick finally makes it into the majors, comes out to his father, and is taken under the wing of the older guys.

The hotel scene was rough, but I think most of us knew who was responsible for hurting Drew and I'm glad this was the catalyst for Drew getting the closer that he needed.

You can't help but hope for the best for Cody and Nick and I'm glad they get their HEA.

Ok so on a positive note I have enjoyed the series so far. Is fun, light reading with generally good dialogue and nice pacing. Some of the plot line fell a little bit flat for me but as the rest of it is pretty good I’ll let that pass.

There is one major drawback for me that’s becoming a major obsession as aim going through the series. That drawback, I have literally no clue what any of the characters look like. It’s no exaggeration to say I know that Cody has brown hair and brown eyes because it’s mentioned ONCE in all the time he appears in the books so far and he’s tall. Nick has blue eyes, that’s it, I know nothing else (again mentioned ONCE). Its actually becoming a running joke between my friend and I that we haven’t got a clue what any of the characters look like, literally no clue. It may seem a minor thing but I’m finding it hard to get attached to characters that I think of as amorphous blobs because we’re not told anything else about them.

The thing is this series could be great, it really could, but instead it’s just okay

YEAH! To second chances.

I liked this story because it's really kinda scary when you go for second chances. Trusting is the hardest part. It's better to take it slow, be honest, say what you want. EXpect both parties want the same and respect each other before going in for it, again. Life isn't always a bed of roses, but if both are willing to give it their all, GO FOR IT! THANK YOU, QUINN!
ENJOY!

Loved it

Set four years after the previous book, it's nice to see how all the characters are doing having grown up a bit. I like that this has a bit more sports and involves the younger characters. The story is really satisfying with a whole bunch of closure for everyone. Possibly my favorite of the series so far.

Sweet story
