The novela wasn't bad per se, but...

We had a scenario of insta love, insta marriage and let's not forget that the hero blackmailed the heroine into sleeping with him.

Yes, she was willing, but as a principle I don't really like this trope.

Another thing that bothered me was the fact that this jumped from one scene to another very fast. I know it's a novela and things should progress faster, but, I've read better.

3 Stars!

A new author's debut novel, it had potential and fell just short of a good read.

Plot Summary
Luke, Viscount Thornton, a well-known rake, is smitten with lust for the widowed Sophia, Lady Pembrook and wants her in his bed. All Sophia wants to do is help navigate her younger sister in the Season's marriage mart. If only, the rakishly handsome scoundrel would stop pursuing her. When Sophia's brother loses everything to Luke at cards, debts must be paid. Sophia agrees to a deal with this Devil, one month as his mistress and her brother's debts are cleared. The question remains whether Sophia will be claimed by the Viscount or will the Viscount be the one who gets claimed?

My Thoughts
- Let's just say that the plot had potential and would have worked if it had not been for the writing style.
- The story was haphazardly put together and it would be a shame to use the word structured.
- Too many characters were introduced and it cluttered my mind making it difficult to understand who is who and how the hell do they connect to the main characters?
- The character backgrounds were left unexplained, there were historical inaccuracies and continuity errors.
- Now the three stars because
1. the plot was interesting if you can get over the debt for mistress bit
2. Luke was an interesting rake, someone who had a tender heart (I am guessing because it was not hardened by some trauma or another). I really enjoyed reading him, but I wanted more.
3. The hero's friends too were interesting, I would be very happy to read their stories.
- Sophia was unexplored as a heroine, so much potential wasted.
- I understand it was a novella but was it really necessary to describe so many balls & ball gowns and people? The word count should have been redirected.
- I am in a forgiving mood because of a new author, a debut novella, plot & character potential, it can be difficult to write novellas that read like a full-length story, very few authors can do it (Stacy Reid and Scarlett Scott)
- It needed more steam for a mistress plot!

My Recommendation
If you do not keep very high standards you may enjoy it. I have not written the series off and I shall read the next one as soon as I can find it.

Sophia, the widowed Lady Pembrooke, is busy launching her sister into society and watching out for her brother, who recently inherited a baronetcy. She has no time for handsome rakes like Luke, Viscount Thornton. When Sophia's brother loses his fortune to Luke at cards, Luke offers to forgive the debt...for a month of her in his bed.

I picked this book up because gambled/wagered tropes are a favorite of mine, but this novella really needed to be a full length story in order to have the time to develop. I didn't like the hero for most of the story; and, just when I started to connect to the book, it was nearing the end. The writing did have promise though, so I would try this author again in the future.

Tropes: Widow, Settle a Debt, Reform a Rake (sort of)

𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧 was a delicious, read in one sitting, regency romance treat!
I adored this book and once I started it, could not put it down

Luke is a first class rake. He is in it for a good time not a long time. Sophia is a widow hoping to help her sister on the marriage mart. The Viscount is brought to his knees by the stunning Lady Pembrooke and resorts to blackmail to get her full attention. Jokes on him because while is mind and other parts of his body understood the assignment, his heart did not!

Watching them fall head over corset in love was both sweet and sexy! I’m giving 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧 the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!

Great

I found this a really good book. Sophia is a great character. She is the eldest of 3 siblings and a widow too. Supporting her sister in her debut, the eyes of the ton are on her beauty too and several lords all try for her attention. Luke Thornton the rake amongst them will anyone catch her.

I enjoyed this story. It was a quick read (I think I was finished within a day) that was on the heavier side of instalove but I liked the author's style of writing for the most part. With Sophia's family recently being welcomed into the peerage when her brother unexpectedly inherits the title of baron, she makes it her duty to ensure her younger sister makes a good match and enters society successfully. As a fairly recent widow, albeit a young one, she's out of the loop of the ton's comings and goings having spent her marriage at her husband's country estate, but uses the connections she has to ensure her sister and brother are welcomed into London. The problem? Her brother, being young and having acquired newfound wealth and admittance to gentlemen's clubs reasonably quickly, is spending his cash at a rate far quicker than the family can afford, especially at the card tables. When he takes on the the much more experienced and skilled Viscount Thornton (aka Luke), he loses everything with a debt to be repaid. Having recently made the acquaintance of, been rejected by and becoming absolutely infatuated by his mark's older sister, he proposes a solution when she tries to negotiate with him. Her in his bed for a month for her brother's debts to be forgotten.

* Slight spoilers below *

There were a lot of things to like in this novel. I liked both of the main characters. If you've read any historical romances set in this time period previously, there'll be few surprises. There's the unrepentant rake who's trying to avoid marriage and taken unawares by his feelings for the female lead. There are the balls, society norms and etiquette to follow and the need to make a solid marriage. I loved that instead of having a virgin as per a million other regency romances, Sophia was a widow - an unexperienced one at that, but it still made a nice change. The book started off with a good introduction as well, because who doesn't love a potential scandal in the ton when an unchaperoned lady is in the clutches of one of the ton's major players.

I also liked that the author followed through with the 'deal' to pay back the debt and wish that this had been stretched out a wee bit. As it was, there was only really one main smexy time encounter and then the book left it mostly at that with the main characters realising they were in love with the subtlety of a tonne of bricks falling on them. This is why I gave the book a slightly lower rating. I felt that the 'Oh, wow, I've just realised I love him/her' was chucked in there way too early with little context when there was a great opportunity to develop their relationship a little bit more and give the reader more plot. Some of the other story elements also seemed a bit forced in, for example one of the other characters, lacking similar development, became a scoundrel to help the plot along, but this was just chucked in there after he'd been presented as a pretty nice guy. There was also Sophia being described as 'average looking' by Luke and then being quite a beauty.

The book leads into the characters associated with the Everly Club where I assume the series will continue to match up the rakes and anti-marriage crew. I would definitely try the next book in the series because I really enjoyed this one for the most part. I just wish the book spent a bit more time on plot development because for a story that focussed on Sophia being Luke's mistress, it was literally for a night. Him calling her his mistress that he fell in love with is a bit of a stretch, even for fiction in this trope. A bit more detail and a slightly longer relationship would have made this book an absolute standout for me and a solid five stars.

The Everly club, a discreet exclusive club of which Luke, viscount Lanley is a member along with his bachelor rake friends.
Baron Huntingford, good friend of Luke, who has to accompany his sister through her debut season and forces his friend Luke to go to the balls with him.
Sophia, Lady Pembrooke, a young widow, who tries to guide her sister Caroline and het brother, the brand new Baron Whitfield through the dangers of society.
Sophia and Luke meet at a ball and Luke is determined to make her his mistress, while Sophia is determined not to give in. Circumstance drive Sophia to give in anyway.....

It’ s a catching story, the first book of what appears to be a promising series. All friends of the Everly club will probably get their story, and I can’t wait for the next
Smoothly written, good structure, likeable characters.

I do think the story would have been even better if it were a bit more elaborate. I now feel that there is too little time for everything that happened.
To be honest, I did have my reservations about Viscount Langley. The way he wants Sophia to be his mistress at all costs, without regard to her reputation or wishes, is not very pleasant.
Sophia also realizes very ( too) quickly that she cares more about Luke. I feel that the development of their relationship could be explained in more detail.
But as said, a catchy story, other interesting characters, Luke who redeems himself, and promises for a good series

Claimed by the Viscount is the first book by Anya Cade and #1 in the new Everly Club series.

When Luke, Viscount Thornton, meets Sophia, the widowed Lady Pembrooke, it’s lust at first sight. Following her around the ton, Luke tries to woo and seduce the beautiful Sophia. Sophia has no time for him as she had no interest in marriage and men and trying to launch her sister into society.

Luke is also a member of the Everly club, run by a duke and home to other rakes and men among the ton. His pursuit of Sophia becomes an obsession and out of character for the renowned bachelor. When Sophia’s brother loses his fortune to luke at the gambling tables, she finally gives in.

This book was a pleasant surprise and a bit more than the synopsis conveys.

For a first novel, the writing was excellent; the details, characters, and story were entertaining, and it ended way too early. The author easily could have written at least 100 pages more. It felt like this book ended just as it was getting started. I also loved that Luke wasn’t just a rake; he fell fast and hard and fought it the entire time. I also love how inconvenienced Sophia felt by Luke’s pursuit. It was nice to watch him have to work for her attention.

I am excited for the next in the series and Huntingdon’s book. Anya Cade is definitely a new author to watch.

Luke Gets His Way . . .

Sophia, the widowed Lady Pembrooke, has taken on the tasks of introducing her younger sister into society while guiding her brother, who recently became a Baron, unfortunately one who had no control over his gambling habit. A rake, Viscount Thornton (Luke), saw Sophia and decided he wanted her for his mistress for a month. But Sophia was not interested. So when her brother ends up losing his fortune to Luke in a card game, Luke will forgive the debt if he gets that month from Sophia spent in his bed. To avoid scandal, she is forced to agree to his terms.

The feeling she stirs in him surprise him. Will he let her go when her agreed upon time is ended? Or will he try to convince the woman he loves that his feelings are real and he wants her for his wife?

I hate women being forced into situations, especially to appease a foolish man who should live with his own mistakes. Whether she falls in love with Luke or not (yes, I know Luke redeems himself rescuing her from Haverley trying to disgrace her by forcing a kiss on her), I would have left skid marks on the floor in my hurry to get away from the manipulative Luke. He would have much groveling to do. But I am obviously more stubborn than Sophia. Regardless of my growling, the story is a good one and I do recommend it.

TThis is the first book in a delightful new series "The Everly Club". All the books are about the gentleman who are the founders of the club or part owner. The club is Elite and members need to be recommended by a member. There is a special room called "The Green Room " for men with special tastes. Each is a Rake in his own right, and most are titled also. Some are war hero's and each story is about the Ladies who catches each of the fellow's eye for different reasons. These are short stories but all have a great plot, drama, secrets, lots of spice and steamy scenes perfect for rakes and the women who may tame them.
All the books are set at the same time and events thet happen at a ball. For that reason, it is best to read them in order as the same characters are in all the books. I read them out of order and still found them a great read.
Each book has its own problem between the rake and his lady and mystery to solve. You will like some of the Rakes more than other and same with the young women, but in the end, each will win you over. As these are short stories, I hate to give anything away as it is so much better to find out the hidden secrets on your own.... I do hope you get this series and get started. Books 1-3 our out now and book four will be later this year.. I can't wait to see what happens in it..

A debut books that hits all of the right buttons and then some. When you read that a story has a rake it in and he is not even close to a rake you are kind of disappointed. I want a rake to be a rake with a heart. Well, you have come to the right place. This rake, Luke, is not in the least sorry for his actions (they are not malicious or even towards virgins). He likes to be naughty and it works. Enter Sophia who wants her brother’s debt forgiven. A game of seduction ensues. I thought the characters were well developed for this short book (I did wish it to go on). Does the rake discover love? I am glad you asked. He most definitely does even though he does not recognize it at first. No, he thinks he is warning men off of Sophia when in reality he can’t stand to see them fawning over her. Sparks flying. I could go on and on about this fantastic story but now look forward to her sister, Caroline, and his friend’s, Huntingdon, story.

Oh what a yummy story! Sophia is a widow and Luke a renowned rake. When they meet it is fireworks. Sophia’s brother loses everything to Luke in a card game and Luke decides he will take payment in the form of Sophia in his bed. What could possibly go wrong? A scheming debutante, an unscrupulous baron, and the threat of exposure with the promise of scandal torment the duo. This story is light, steamy and fun to read. The dialogue is spot-on and the characters’ personalities come through loud and clear, each one adding depth to the story. It appears that this is the first book in a new series, and if the rest are like this, Ms. Cade has a hit on her hands. I can hardly wait to see what delightful trouble she conjures up next.

Entertaining

Enjoyed this book … the storyline was fairly original and well written. However, I found the character of the male hero too stereotypical… a « bad boy turned hero ». I just couldn’t find him any redeeming features … he seemed like a badly created caricature. The dialogue was unoriginal, tired and predictable. The female heroine had more character and originality. The too-explicit sexual content was disappointing and added nothing to the story. Actually, it detracted from the warmth and sweetness of the tale. I probably would have liked the male character more had he been less of a sexual predator. I will not be reading any more books from this author.

I really enjoyed reading this book, especially when the drama created in it wasn’t drawn out. I loved how Luke and Sophia met and how they realized they loved each other. I also liked supporting characters as they made the story even more interesting. I will definitely be reading more of this author’s books.

The widow and the rake.
A spicy hot delight is what this charmer is and I loved it. Sophia a widow meets a rake named Luke and it is off to the races. He wants her and fate just drops the way into his lap. It is a quick read and really fun! I think there is more to Caro than Sophia or Huntingford may realize. I cannot wait to read Caro’s story. This was a great start to a new series. Good read.
Really well written. It was a tad short in length so she wasn't able to get a lot of character development. But they were still written with depth. It would have been a great read had it been longer and more storyline played out. Sex was good. Only once, others implied or just mentioned. Overall, not a bad read. The other 2 books are a little longer so interested to see where she takes them.

That was delightful! Regency romances are always fun, and in this case, the rake (and there are a few of them) and the widow clash, and of course, that intrigues him. Situations arise and he makes his move, and she is his. She falls hard, he falls harder, and they get the HEA she had been denied and he never realized he wanted. Quickly grabbed the next two books in the series, loved this one so much!

The first book in The Everly Club series a well written short story by a new Author, it looks like this is her debut book. A well written historical falling I love story

For a short tale this one was complete. We really get a feel for the widow Sophia and I truly liked her, her naivety and her protectiveness for her family. Luke, Thornton, is cynical. Probably because he feels chased by marriage mart mamas. But when Sophia and Luke come together the chemistry is smoking. And a great read.

Sometimes plans backfire

A raunchy story of retribution that goes so wrong! Luke won all the Barons worth, and to redeem it, his widowed sister had to spend thirty nights with him! Well of course things don’t go as planned, but enjoyable book!

2 stars - too short! They fell in love almost immediately! And even tho the description plays up the gambling and the month long debt.. it was barely mentioned in the narrative. Also, there were a lot of modern swears & anachronisms.

This was a cute short story about how Sophia ends up making a deal with Luke to cancel her brother's gambling debts by sleeping with him for a month. He ends up getting attached more than he had anticipated, so we have a very quick happily every after.

I liked this story. There is a little open doors. The characters are flirty, fun banter, and stern all rolled into one. Saving her brother from ruin she gives herself to the rake for a month. They both find they can not live without the other.
