Michael Newton, Ph.D., born in 1931, holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology, is a certified Master Hypnotherapist, and is a member of the American Counseling Association. He has also been on the faculty of higher educational institutions as a teacher while active in private practice in Los Angeles. Over many years, Dr. Newton developed his own intensive age regression techniques in order to effectively take hypnosis subjects beyond their past life memories to a more meaningful soul experience between lives. He is considered to be a pioneer in uncovering the mysteries about life after death through the use of spiritual hypnotic regression. He now trains other advanced hypnotherapists in his techniques.

Dr. Newton is the author of three best-selling books, Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives (Llewellyn, 1994) , Destiny of Souls: New Case Studies of Life Between Lives (Llewellyn, May 2000), and Life Between Lives: Hypnotherapy for Spiritual Regression (Llewellyn, 2004). Dr. Newton has an international reputation as a spiritual regressionist who has mapped out much of our life between lives experience. He has appeared on numerous national radio and TV talk shows to explain our immortal life in the spirit world.

This is the second book from the first "Journey of Souls". If what he writes is true, then your whole life will never be viewed as the same ever again. And if it is all fantasy, it will still make you reconsider all your values, your purpose and the beauty of life, living and existence. Healthy stuff, powerful read. Great book.

Destiny of Souls (DoP May 1, 2000) is the second book from psychologist Dr. Michael Newton following the world-wide success of Journey of Souls published in 1994. Both books are published by Llwellyn.

I have had several 'out of body' experiences which may explain my interest in the subject of whether there is anything after physical death. My abiding interest is in the origin, nature and uses of consciousness and these areas of human experience coalesce in Dr. Newton's 30 + years of work with hypnotic subjects who revealed details of what seemed to be 'life between lives'. I should make it clear that Dr. Newton did not start out with any assumptions about what happens after physical death. He seems to have been a fairly conventional professional hypnotist and qualified counseling psychologist working with clients with common problems such as anxiety disorder, panic attacks, difficulty with anger, compulsive behaviours - a standard smorgasbord of complaints that most counseling psychologists help people with everyday. Dr. Newton also offered hypnosis as a method of breaking unwanted habits, regaining memories after trauma, etc. In the midst of his busy practice a patient who was being regressed to birth to release the trauma of that experience suddenly 'slipped into another life' without warning. Since Dr. Newton didn't believe in life after death much less in multiple incarnations he was alarmed at this development and brought the patient back into the present lifetime and then out of the trance state. However, this disturbing experience was not to be a one-off in his career. When regressed to the birth process, other patients also slipped into another lifetime or into the even more bizarre memory of a spiritual existence between lifetimes. Thus began Dr. Newton's 30 year long odyssey in the realms of life after life.

In Destiny of Souls, he examines 70 cases that are representative of the variety of 'between lives' experiences of most of his roughly 1000 cases. As an agnostic, I was not prepared for what these 70 clients revealed. I could accept an afterlife in which consciousness gradually faded into oblivion but what these clients revealed was far more sophisticated and far more demanding of us than I could have anticipated. As a lifelong student of whatever interests me I could accept that this life is a sort of school but in preparation for what? The answer seems to be a succession of lifetimes - many thousands in some cases - designed as challenges to gradually refine our consciousness to the point where we can participate in the ongoing work of... creating universes and populating them younger consciousnesses who will eventually be re-absorbed into the massive consciousness which is all there is and the source of all that is. Whether you 'buy that' or not, the revelations coming from Dr. Newton's clients are consistent across cultures, generations and genders in such numbers that we cannot write them off as co-incidence or mass fantasy. His clients came from all over the world and most of them were atheist or agnostic or just plain uncommitted. The few who had religious convictions worked to reconcile what was revealed in their sessions with what they "believed". For some that proved impossible but their memories of the life between life experience re-assured them that there is a spiritual reality that underlies material life. Case after case revealed a bit more of the process that we apparently are all undergoing but the essential steps of the process apply across the board. All that I say about it is that I found it worthwhile reading and it opened even further what I had considered to be an already open mind. I can't explain away these cases. Dr. Newton's methods are fully transparent with no 'leading statements or leading questions' so I can't fault him there. He did not ask for this bizarre twist in his career but he could no longer dismiss it and finally wrote up the cases from transcriptions of thousands of hours of audio/video recordings.

Would I recommend it? Yes, especially to "sceptics". It is food for thought no matter your views on life after death.

Ok, upon first impression, I thoght Newton's work appeared too "new agey" and should be easily dismissed. I mean c'mon, case studies of life between lives in the spirit world? Sounds a little much. But after reading all three of Newton's books I am impressed with the years of research he devoted to his work.

Before reading "Destiny of Souls" I recommend starting with his first book, "Journey of Souls". Also I found it helpful to have already read "Many Lives, Many Masters" by Brian Weiss. This introduced me to past-life regression through hypnosis. Apparently, under hypnosis clients can remember their past lives and are able to recognize the important souls who agree to incarnate together lifetime after lifetime. It is possible the people you feel unusually strong connections with may have played central roles in your previous lives.

This is the knowledge that I brought with me into "Journey of Souls". But Michael Newton takes this type of hypnotherapy one step further---he helps clients remember their lives as immortal souls in the spirit world.. In "Journey of Souls" he maps out the souls journey from the moment of death until rebirth. He begins by taking subjects to through the death scene of their most recent past life. What happens after this is fascinating. The soul leaves their body and feels a magnetic pull into a tunnel of light. At the end of the tunnel they are met by their personal spirit guide who has been with them througout all of their physical incarnations. These guides possess infinite love and compassion and healing energy. After long hard lives on Earth, the soul need to be enveloped in healing energy. Shortly afterwards we have a casual conversation about our successes and failures of our previous life. We are never judged harshly....there is so much love and compassion in the spirit world. After this we get to reunite with our spirit group, our soulmate, and others who are important people in our life. This part is always very emotional, and we are always greeted with some kind of celebration full of love and humor. This is just the tip of the iceberg. While I found this information fascinating, was still skeptical.

A few facts helped me trust Newton's work. First of all he's not a half-baked floaty new-age hippie. He is old school. He hypnotised his first subject in 1947. He grew up an athiest...believed in no higher power, no God, no divine intelligence...nothing. While working with a client, he accidentally stumbled upon their memories of life in the spirit world. At first he was skeptical, but after more sessions with different clients he discovered that other people possess these memories as well. Overall, Newton has worked with more than 7,000 clients, and ALL of them report similar descriptions of life in the spirit world.

"Destiny of Souls" is a lot like "Journey of Souls" only more comprehensive. Loaded with nearly 70 case studies---actual dialogue from sessions with clients, there are many fantastic stories that give one hope that death is not the ultimate end, and insight that everything happens for a reason, that before our souls incarnate on earth, they agree to accept tragedy and suffering in order to learn important lessons and grow.

I know my friends who ascribe to more doctrinal spiritual beliefs will not be interested in this text, and I am not going to encourage those of you who feel you fit that category to read this. It is not my intent to challenge or proselytize here; I'm just reviewing a book in a very self-centered sort of way.

Those of you who know me really well know that I have had some strange experiences in my life, and I have been working all of my 42 years to try to piece together how these all made sense. It's been like working a jigsaw puzzle without the big picture on the box to help me find the edges and the general shape of things. At this point in my life, I had assembled some of the big stuff, but this book was like seeing a good portion of the finished picture. What I had figured out on my own was confirmed by this book. The rest of the text offered explanations for lingering curiosity.

I am eager to read the first book, Journey of Souls, which I received in the mail today. It's pretty exciting to know that I'm not the only one on the planet who has a sense of this stuff. In fact, the more I broach the subject with people, the more I find that many of us think about this stuff even if we don't feel comfortable talking about it.

"Destiny of Souls" is the follow-up to Newton's "Journey of Souls," expanding upon the basic "map" of the Spirit World and the movement of souls through that world as they review their past life and prepare for their next incarnation.

Much denser than JOS, this book offers details unavailable in that first book and is recommended only if you found the JOS compelling. I did, and thus I enjoyed this book immensely, especially the 65 new case studies in which Michael Newton hypnotically regresses his subjects first to a past life, then moves them forward through their death in that life, then on to the "eternal now" of the Spirit World, where the fondest hopes and aspirations of our souls are realized: we are eternal beings, destined (if we desire it) to become perfect, to guide other souls in their search for perfection, to aid in the creation of planets upon which other eternal souls will dwell, and to ultimately join with the Source of all life, what we call prosaically "God."

Aside from my own spiritual beliefs (I was raised a Mormon and I'd say 90% of LDS theology dovetails nicely with Newton's revelations), what impressed me the most about Newton's research is the consistency of recall over hundreds of hypnosis subjects. While there are other explanations (Jung's "collective unconscious" comes to mind, as well as the "genetic memory" theory), Newton's discoveries seemed most likely to me. In the words of Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism and a true charismatic sage: "Truth tastes good."

The purpose of our lives as detailed more fully in "Destiny of Souls" does just that: it tastes wonderful.

So this guy regresses people, not to their past lives, but to the time *in-between* their last life and this life. To see what that's all about. And he's collected all these cases to piece together this map of how all this life stuff works.

It's a little off-putting at first because it's so detailed that it sometimes seems like a giant bureaucracy, with the levels and the advancement of souls and various departments with various functions. But two things: he'll specifically ask the person "uh, this is starting to sound like a giant bureaucracy" and they'll scowl and say "no, no, you don't get it." I think it's a) these accounts come filtered through the human incarnation currently sitting in his room and b) we just don't have a lot of models for organization that is organic, non-sucky, and actually works on this planet. That is, facilitates growth instead of restricting and regulating freedom.

So yeah. Fascinating.

Just as wonderful as his first book. I have had 'visits' from loved ones who have passed on so it isn't as difficult for me to read Newton's books. I think any haters would not enjoy it because it details a certain organization between lives and shows that NO we do not fly around with wings on our back singing! (although it that's your thing, you certainly could) Although there IS singing there, and so much more.

To me the descriptions ARE heavenly and so interesting! Retaining our 'self' how awesome is that? We have fun, friends, study. Ultimately 100% pure love, well isn't that what heaven is all about? I would invite any naysayers to read the books before making uneducated judgements. Some of it is hard to believe, yet at the same time makes so much sense.

Many of our current friends are part of our Soul Group and help us in this and other lives. Some are our detractors, having agreed to play this part so that we can experience something specific. Why go to all this trouble? Well how can one appreciate Perfection without experiencing less than? Here we can experience being Mom's and Dad's, marriage, all sorts of Earthly events that do not happen in Heaven.

Rather than destroy religious beliefs the goal seems to accept them all as valid and contributing something to our 'Earth School', but showing that there is more to it; we ARE all One and not a single thing happens without reason no matter how terrible which is what I believe anyway. LOVE his books!

Michael Newton has written another well-organized book, sharing his discoveries (and theories) about past-life regression. Hence the four stars.

In my other reviews of his books here on Goodreads, I've called Newton out for publishing misleading ideas, some that may have a pretty low truth value. Even so, it's a luxury to read books on a topic that can be so helpful for self-actualizing spiritual seekers.

YET ALL SYSTEMS FOR PAST-LIFE REGRESSION ARE NOT EQUALLY EFFICACIOUS

Nor are all conclusions drawn from past-life regressions necessarily tethered to spiritual truth. For example:

* Ask clients who've gained lasting, positive results in their human lives, thanks to a system for past-life regression designed with rigor (which is clearly true of Newton's system, among others).
* Also ask clients who benefitted from high truth value during and after their regressions. So essential, since intelligent clients seek to understand their experiences.
* In my view, even when the regression system is rigorous, that doesn't guarantee useful understandings.
* Rather, the degree of reliable truth largely hinges upon having the past-life regression system based upon cocreating with the Divine, rather than talking with spirit guides, etc.

Maybe important to know as a reader, a past-live regression professional, or as a client

Avoid playing with astral ideas, and/or treating discarnate spirits as though they were trustworthy sources of wisdom. Which they aren't.

TO END ON A SWEET NOTE

For my final review of a book by Michael Newton, having already done three additional ones tonight, how about this? I'll quote a couple of statements from him with which I do agree. YES!

FROM PAGE 398

Some theologians suggest that nonreligious people are attempting to cut loose from moral and ethical responsibility dictated to us in scripture from a higher authority.

However, we are not evaluated after death by our religious associations, but rather by your conduct and values.

FROM PAGE 399

... we are given freedom of choice to exercise free will in the search for the reasons why we are here. On the road of life we must take responsibility for all our decisions without blaming other people for life's setbacks that bring unhappiness.

There's some high truth value. Thank you, fellow seeker of truth, Dr. Michael Newton.

After an un-expected death in the family this year it gave me comfort and helped me better place my views/thoughts of the feeling that there has to be more than this and this helped me a lot. I had the book for a long time (always feeling I have been here before) and read it after this loss and I know it will help me in dealing with losses in the future. To know/believe that I will see those closest to me again is a huge comfort for me. I never thought I would be able to deal with death and lossing loved ones but this book gave me a great feeling.

I have not read Newton's preceding book "Journey of Souls" so I can't compare it with the one under review.

In this book the author recounts how he places his clients under deep hypnosis, guides them to the spirit world between lives, and there interviews them about their experiences.

The book goes into more detail about the spiritual plane than any other book I have read on the subject, including those by Dolores Cannon.

Newton covers various subjects, such as techniques used by the souls to comfort their bereaved partners and family members, including entering into their dreams; ghosts (who are mostly obsessively attached to places, people and events where they can't let go); discarnates who visit Earth; regenerating damaged souls, and so on and so forth.

There is always a part of the soul that remains in the spirit world. Highly developed souls, especially, often underestimate the percentage of soul energy they need to take with them into the body and thus run into problems.

One piece of information that was completely new to me was that the body, apparently, as far as I understand, has a strong consciousness and can act counter to the intentions of the soul and thus cause problems for the latter. I must admit I don't understand this matter adequately and feel it could have been explained even further and better.

There was also for me new information about the birthing of souls. Here is a quote: "My soul was created out of a great irregular cloudy mass. I was expelled as a tiny particle of energy from this intense, pulsating bluish, yellow and white light...." The new souls are taken care of by special helpers and given the "love hug". The soul is brought to an awareness of its existence. Each soul is unique.

We learn about cluster groups, the spiritual learning centre. the life books library, and much agout the colour spectrum of spiritual auras. The primary core colours indicate the stage of overall development, but "certain souls carry secondary colours .... called halo colours".

A chapter describes the Council of Elders, to which we are summoned for evaluation in two occasions. We are asked how we feel about major episodes in our live and our courses of action. Some of the Elders bear medallions with images designed to remind us of significant episodes from our lives. Sunjects mention the "overwhelming" feeling of a higher force called "the Presence" which they feel to be perhaps not God but deified entities with capabilities superior to those in the council. This higher force influences council meetings.

In a subsequent chapter the subject of primary soulmates, companion soulmates and affiliated souls is discussed. But not everything occurring in the spirit world is serious, there are also numerous recreational activities for those interested in these.

Newton goes into great depth in his study of the spirit world, the information being absolutely comprehensive but not always easy to digest.

There are many levels of soul development, and one thing I realized from the book was that I am not myself as spiritually advanced as I had thought, and perhaps not spiritually advanced at all (ha, ha!) - everything is relative.

There is a screening room of future lives so we can get a taste of what is in store for us, and choose between various bodies. In some cases you might choose a body that will die young, and have several choices also as regards manner of death.

One thing I can say is that with all the talk of what may happen at the end of 2012, the Shift or the ascension into the fourth or even fifth dimension, and all the uncertainty connected with this, this book had a very relaxing effect on me. Even if I don't make the ascension but my body dies at this time, there is absolutely no cause for worry - the spirit world is an extremely loving and comforting place to visit.

I would strongly recommend that you read this book if you're at all interested in the nature of our stay in the spirit world.

This perspective is certainly interesting, and fun to think about. However, the big problem with this ontology is that it is naively realist about the meanings and transcendental value of emotions and interpersonal ethics. The emphasis always seems to be on the affective value of transitions, like refreshment after a long time, or of relationships. There is very little consideration of the philosophical implications, it is like a cartoonish sketch of metaphysics, comprised of comforting images and realism about social ontology and karma, as a way of "progressing". This work suggests the hypostatization of "progress" and "personal development" and "ethics" as the purposive foundations of both life and death. It's all about karma and growing up. The afterlife is basically high-tech energy based group therapy. All the complexity of the world is reduced to properties and shapes of energy, which itself bears properties of mind. There is a kind of dualism suggested between mental substance and material substance, with talk of beings from menal worlds coming into the heaviness of earth space and what what. It's all very wishy washy, and I really wish that a proper blockheaded analytical person questioning all the givens and mechanics or implimentation details of, things like realism about moral-responspibility and emotions and affective energies as forces outside of the brain, could have refined the logic of this half-baked cosmology.
The idea of free will here is also rather dodgy; cartoonish libertarian free-will constrained by karma, complete with manifest-image ideas about accountability. There is no in depth analysis of to what extent personhood and thereby moral-responsibility is socially mediated, and with that there is also very little attention payed to what exactly constitutes the integrity of personhood, beyond mere karma and memories, it is as if the soul is an arbitrarilly divisible monad of energy, with an identity rooted in a sense of dialectical history and interpersonal status based on karma and skill development. Primtive! Drenched in sappy emotionality. So, heaven is just a schoolhouse for the mushheaded, and god bless the poor autists who do not reduce reality to a utlitarianism of feelings. Buddhists have a better idea of what's going on. Fuck this book!

Thank goodness I read Ross Kevin Porter's review on Amazon - after seeing all those five star reviews I thought I must be the only person who noticed that the voices and the language used by the 'clients' were all too similar. It seems odd too that the author mentions no reports that contradict events in the cases mentioned so far - perhaps he believes they don't count, although these might have served to balance the scales somewhat. I'm almost halfway through, more than slightly sickened by the all too neat and detailed utopian setup and ready to let the book fall from my hand. If this over-ordered, hierarchical and sugary love-saturated description of life between lives is true this free spirit would prefer oblivion.

And another thing - where the heck are the animal souls...?

Edited to add that I managed to finish this one, and that in fairness, animals are mentioned. Apparently when we want to spend time with our friends from a previous life we contact an Animal Caretaker who then locates that particular animal's soul energy and reconstructs a facimile? for a while, afterwards returning one's friend to the special animal location, as animal souls and human souls don't intermingle. Bleh.....

Another thought that occurred to me while finishing this one is that so many of the subjects under regression to their life before the current one (before their last death) mention easily checkable details of that life, yet no attempt seems to have been made to verify these, even though many of those lives took place in the 1930s and 1950s.

Dincolo de faptul prezentat in lucrarile dr.

I’ve read all of Dr. Newton’s books on the subject of Life Between Lives hypnotherapy. I consider him to be an important pioneer in the field and I am extremely grateful to have read his works.

“Destiny of Souls” is precisely what the subtitle says it is: New Case Studies of Life Between Lives. I appreciate that Dr. Newton presents his opinions as opinions, and not as facts. He invites his readers to embrace or discard what they read according to their own judgment. I did find myself in disagreement with him on a few points, but never to the point that it interfered with my ability to gain what I could from the book.

If you’re looking for a lot of interviews between hypnotherapist and souls, this is a good choice for you.

This is the sequel to the author's earlier book "Journey of Souls". I found this book much slower to get through than his first. It could be that the subject material was less novel to me (thus less interesting) or the fact that this "deep dive" into the specialization of advanced souls is just more demanding material than the general overview presented in the first book. For skeptics, this book feels like the author may be stretching his paradigm beyond where the reader can continue to suspend disbelief. This book is organized like the first, as a set of case studies of hypnotic regression patients that are grouped together by their various soul specializations. Apparently, the Afterlife is a highly organized, hierarchical, somewhat bureaucratic educational institution in which one is enrolled for eternity. I have very mixed feelings about this if it's an accurate portrayal of reality. The picture of the astral realm painted by this author is broadly consistent with the content of Suzanne Ward's (channeled) book "Mathew, Tell Me About Heaven" and its sequels. On the other hand, it is somewhat at odds with Dolores Cannon's two dozen books also sourced from hypnotic regression (QHHT) patients. Dolores' work paints a much richer picture of the multidimensional nature of the cosmos and her work is consistent with the Law of One and other New Age material (the eight densities in the octave). What I find very interesting is that both Michael Newton and Dolores Cannon include in their hypnotic sessions a conversation with an omniscient consciousness distinct from the patient themselves. This concept loosely aligns with C. G. Jung's concept of the Collective Unconsciousness and is called by various names such as the "unconscious mind", the "Over-Soul", or the "Higher Self". Both authors report that the voice and vocabulary of this entity is distinct from the patient themselves and it can be asked questions from a third party perspective such as "What lessons did this person set out to learn in this incarnation?"

Captivating. I read this quite awhile ago, but keep coming back to it. I came upon it rather oddly and had that feeling like I should have heard of it before but was so relieved to be reading it now. I must say that Dr. Newton comes closer than anyone else so far. It is the right combination of being on the right track and reminding me how much is still left to uncover. This is a life altering and life enhancing book that is a gift to humanity. I am a happier person for having read it (as well as the first book he wrote...I just happened to read them out of order because the B Dalton that was on my way home that day was out of it. Amazon has everything, obviously. But you know. That takes a day or two ;o)

Just like his previous book, this world of souls between lives is fascinating to contemplate, but so difficult to believe. Over and over, I found myself saying "COME ON!" in my head while listening to this audiobook. I would love to see if I could be deeply hypnotized in this way. If I were able to go back to the "life between lives", then I would be convinced, but until then, I remain merely a hopeful skeptic.

P.S. As in the previous audiobook, the way he says "Subject!" (fast, loud, staccato-like) before every statement of every subject/client really gets on my nerves. I think I would have enjoyed the printed book more for this reason.

I think I read this book a number of years ago, and have a suspicion I might own it stuck in a box somewhere. I was totally fascinated with it again. As another reviewer said, "This is the second book from the first "Journey of Souls". If what he writes is true, then your whole life will never be viewed as the same ever again. And if it is all fantasy, it will still make you reconsider all your values, your purpose and the beauty of life, living and existence. Healthy stuff, powerful read. Great book."

This book helps tremendously to engage yourself with further questions and it is possible that you will not see your life as the same ever again. It is demanding and purposeful, sometimes it reads as sci-fi, but I took the best out of it as far as I could. There were some parts which I couldn't comprehend; the emerging of our body cells with the soul and how intertwined it all is because of the ego and soul contract duality and potential. Still, the writer has the best intentions and I thought that it would be overwhelming, and it was, but I had to know, so I know now.

Michael Newton‘s work is very special to me. His book “Journey of Souls” came to me at a time of searching and questioning in my life, and ended up being the foundation of my spirituality.

When my Dad died last year, I begin searching in the same way that I did before, and “Destiny of Souls” was the perfect healing antidote to my pain. It took me a while, but I’m really glad that I dedicated myself to reading it. This book gave me so much comfort and hope and peace and has continued to help me through my grief. I’m so grateful for MN and his work.

See my review of Journey of Souls, by the same author. This is just as fascinating (and just as problematic) as the earlier book. In some ways, I'd *like* this picture of the world to be true; but despite there not being enough evidence to convince me, I still think that this book and Journey of Souls are good reads.

Really interesting follow up to Journey of Souls, if you wanted to know more specifics (though the gist of it was already explained in JOS). Dr. Newtons conclusion in this book was the most impactful part for me (I don’t want to say it but it’s a theory about our “evolution” as souls and how things may be changing)
