description

"Deep down, I believed a story could change us, and that if we read it deeply enough, a good book could transform our souls."

Maggie, a passionate and zealous English language arts teacher, has been given the assignment of her life - to home-tutor a sick child (Yuri).

Yuri, child of Ukrainian immigrants Sasha and Katya, has spent most of his life trapped indoors due to a heart condition.

"You only get to be a kid once in your life and I'm not getting that chance."

He has to take special precautions not to over-exert himself...which results in him spending most of his life sitting on the wayside.

Luckily, Maggie is able to bring him out of his shell...and through the process, she learns a thing or two along the way.

So.

Sooooo.

Soooooooooooooooooo.

I really loved the perspective of Katya and her husband, Sasha, back when they were in the Ukraine.

Katya spent her early years as a Ukrainian ballerina and Richman does a truly excellent job of not only setting the scene, but also breathing life into those events.

I was completely enthralled by the Chernobyl events - from Katya and Sasha's frightened first days to their daring escape.

I also loved the love for literature. All of the books mentioned made me want to head out and pick them up all over again.

"Ever since I had first left home, I brought with me one of the books I had ever loved."

Unfortunately, there were a few areas that just didn't click for me - and those mostly centered on the main character, Maggie.

"For those of you who are already half-asleep," I joked, "wake-up. Because this year is going to be fun."

Throughout the book, Maggie was constantly a plucky, kind and hyper go-getter.

Her character is the kind that belongs in Anne of Green Gables - but in the later books, where Anne is so happy and good that you start to wonder what she is on.

"That's what my mother always says about me. I'm always trying to find a sliver of light, when everyone else sees shadows. It's the romantic in me." I smiled ruefully.

What I'm trying to say, Maggie's character just got to be too much for me. Someone with only highs and no lows does not give much depth to the character.

She never (ever) has a struggle that lasts more than a few pages and spends so much time wallowing in mild self-pity that I ended up not having pity for her at all.

"This has nothing to do with you."
"I think it does," I said, sobbing.

And, then there's poor Bill.

Who's Bill? you ask.

A saint personified, I reply.

Bill is Maggie's boyfriend of six years who (from the first chapter) you can tell he's going to be dumped for the hot (and sensitive) music teacher at Maggie's school.

But, even though I knew it was coming, I was still interested in seeing how this would happen.

And let me tell you, the evidence is appalling.

"Dad offered me and Bill cups of the cider, but Bill asked if there was any beer.
I bit my lip. It's not that my family was all that sophisticated, but we had our rituals. Spiced cider on Thanksgiving. Mulled wine on Christmas Eve. Was asking for a Coors on Thanksgiving really necessary?"

And if that wasn't disgusting enough, he has the nerve go out for drinks with an old school friend (once) in six months, to call her educational job as "practice" for motherhood (in an offhanded, excited-for-the-future way) AND to watch TV when he unwinds after work.

"You know what I'd really like?" I said, my voice rising, "It's for you to...make me a damn fire!" I pulled the remote from his hand and shut off the TV.
"I want to wrap my Christmas presents tonight with that fireplace going in full blaze. That's what I want for Christmas!" I was nearly hyperventaling from my rage. "Can you do that for me, Bill? Can you?"

Sarcasm aside, I honestly wondered if we are supposed to side with Bill on this relationship thing.

I just cannot see how having two beers on a thanksgiving night or gently poking fun at Maggie's family's overly-thankful gift-opening routine constitutes any sort of violent reaction.

The way Maggie treated him just broke my heart.

For example, Bill helps his family pick out presents for her and they're all warm-and-fuzzy clothing (cause Maggie always complains that she's cold - not that the audience hears that, it's just something we were told to accept).

And...Maggie gets furious.

"Perhaps I had made a few too many comments that I found the cottage a bit drafty, but I was just hinting that I wanted Bill to make a romantic fire."

She then proceeds to give him a watch (a passive-aggressive gift of "time" to hint that they need to spend more time together) and then exchange all of her presents for a slinky New Year's Eve dress.

Her excuse? She wanted to get something that SHE'D like.

She just seems so unnecessarily cruel to the poor guy that when she finally broke up with him that I was honestly cheering for Bill - he deserves to be happy!

I think that in order for Maggie to be justified in her actions, the book needs a reversal.

Just swap all of their actions so that Bill becomes the cruel one then it'll be clear that breaking up with Bill would be the absolute best option for Maggie.

Other than that, my other, other sticking point was that this one felt predictable.

There was no mystery regarding what happens - you can tell immediately that

And this is coming from the perspective of someone who NEVER is able to predict ANYTHING.

I'm literally the worst at finding foreshadowing (I went through all the HP books when I was 10, fully expecting Harry to die at the end of each book...) but I predicted all this within the first couple of chapters.

Those were my main sticking points...And looking back, I honestly just think it was the character of Maggie.

Everyone else in the book was fine - her violin-making father was wonderful, Katya's struggle was beautifully done and Yuri was a bit too sweet at times, but I'll give him a pass.

This book had so much potential, but all the focus on Maggie just marred it a bit for me.

"I feel like I'm back in middle school."

I was hoping to enjoy this more, given so many high ratings on Goodreads, but while there were some things I liked about it, it fell short of being a story that will be memorable for me. Maggie Topper is a teacher charged with tutoring an eleven year old boy, Yuri, who has a heart condition that keeps him from attending school. They develop a relationship that affects both of them in a positive way. My emotions were certainly touched at times, but other times, it felt melodramatic. I loved some of the characters, especially Yuri and his parents Sasha and Katya who immigrated from Kiev just before Yuri is born, but mostly the characters were just too goody-goody, especially Maggie. There are two story lines. Yuri and his family’s story was the one that I wanted to keep reading about. Maggie’s romance story was pretty mundane and predictable. I’m a baseball fan, so Yuri’s love of baseball and the bond he shares with his father and his friend Finn was lovely to see, but Maggie trying to connect with Yuri over baseball was commendable but felt forced. The writing was simplistic and the dialogue ho hum. I did love the writing assignments Maggie gives to her students and reading them was a highlight of the book for me. While I was surprised at one thing that happens, for the most part it was predictable. I have to admit that overall it ended up being a good reprieve from some other tough books I’ve read recently, but not one that I loved. There’s pretty much a thing that didn’t work for me for every one that did, so right down the middle- 3 stars.

This was the December read with Diane and Esil, and we always have a good discussion. You’ll have to read their reviews to see if we felt the same.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Berkeley through NetGalley.

It takes a talented storyteller to get you completely hooked on a story even if you can pretty much predict everything that is going to happen. It takes even more talent to make you get all choked up even when you know what is coming.

In her new novel, The Secret of Clouds , Alyson Richman proves she has exceptional talent, because even though the plot moved as I expected it would, I was hooked on this book from the very start, and I found myself sobbing late last night as it ended.

Maggie Topper is a teacher with a true passion for what she does. She loves the feeling of reaching her students, of making connections with them, and inspiring them. She looks at each school year as a new challenge, and tries not to fall prey to the cynicism that often plagues her fellow teachers.

At the start of a new school year, Maggie is asked by the principal to take on an extra task—to tutor a student, Yuri, whose heart problem hampers him from being able to attend school on a daily basis. Maggie is reluctant at first, because the thought sparks painful memories from her own childhood, but she realizes that Yuri deserves to be inspired and challenged just like every other student she teaches.

Yuri at first rebuffs Maggie's attempts to connect with him, until she realizes she may be trying too hard. She finds the key to Yuri's intellect and his heart is through baseball—even though he cannot play the game, he is a diehard Yankees fan like his father, and has tremendous passion for the players and the stats. Little by little, she realizes how much wiser and more insightful he is than a typical sixth-grader, and he opens Maggie's eyes to the need to live life to the fullest.

Maggie and Yuri's relationship deepens, and she begins to understand just how his parents, Katya and Sasha, who emigrated from the Ukraine in the mid-1980s following the Chernobyl disaster, are torn between wanting to protect him and wanting him to be a "normal" kid, between believing he will get better and fearing for the worst. But Yuri seems to give everyone the strength he so desperately needs for himself, and touches people in ways they never quite expected.

"We can't be so afraid of experiencing pain that it interferes with the things we love."

The Secret of Clouds is in many ways, a love story—romantic love, the love between friends, parental love, the love of baseball, and above all, the love of life. Richman has created some beautifully fleshed-out characters and tugs at your emotions without being too maudlin (most of the time). Maggie's mother also is supposed to be an amazing Italian cook, so it's best not to read this on an empty stomach! (She does provide a recipe along with the acknowledgments at the end of the book.)

You may not be surprised by the book's plot, but I hope you'll be moved, and that you'll think about these characters long after. I know I will.

***NOW AVAILABLE***

I was interested in this novel because my daughter has taught 8th grade for 15 years and having raised four daughters I have always been grateful for all of the great teachers that my girls had throughout the years. That said I found that this book was a mediocre read for me.

There are two storylines here. The book is written from the point of view of Maggie, the main character in the book. Maggie is a new teacher recently having changed careers having found her work in a PR firm in New York to be a bad fit.

Maggie and her boyfriend Bill have just moved to Long Island to get away from some of the stress of living in the city and they have found a small cottage to call home. Her relationship with Bill is loosely described but we know quite soon that things are going downhill between the two of them. We never get to know Bill’s character well at all but he is pretty much always described in a negative light.

There is a second storyline which is quite interesting and that is of the sick boy’s parents. Katya is an aspiring and quite talented ballerina until an unfortunate accident puts her career on hold. Sasha is a budding scientist and the couple live in Kiev, very interesting times for this area of the Ukraine. Soon conditions in their country deteriorate and with the disaster at Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Sasha convinces Katya to move to the US. Throughout the novel we get some glimpses of what their life was like before they had Yuri, their ill son who has a birth defect which affects his heart and how much exertion he can endure. I wish that their lives had been more well described as I found them to be an interesting couple with a great story to tell. Katya is convinced that Yuri was born with the birth defect because of the nuclear fallout and blames herself.

Moving on, Maggie is asked by the Principal at her school if she will tutor Yuri, she teaches 6th grade English. At first Yuri is shy but she finds that they have a mutual love of baseball and this helps to cement their relationship. Maggie also eventually enlists the aid of one of her other students, Finn, who also loves baseball, and together they make great progress with Yuri. Eventually he attends school one day a week and enjoys the baseball games.

I won’t go into any more of the plot as I don’t want to insert any spoilers. I thought the premise of this book was quite good but really found the writing to be somewhat mediocre and predictable. The reader can pretty much tell what is going to happen next in the book with regards to all of the characters. There really isn’t anything surprising or new that kept me turning pages.

What really lowered this read to a 3* was the ending. It was just so perfect and with quite an unbelievable “happy ending for all” feeling. Things in real life just are never this predictable. I do thank the author for calling attention to teachers and how they use their talents to inspire students.

I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher through Edelweiss. This was a Traveling Sister read :)

An emotional story that flowed beautifully.

The author's storytelling made this an emotional journey for me. A teacher, Maggie Topper goes the extra mile to connect with a home-bound student, Yuri. I was able to relate to Maggie and the teaching environment.

Two stories are told.

The backstory of Sasha and Katya and how/why the fled Ukraine.

An unexpected tragedy.

A ballet career in Kiev.

Parents undying love for their son, Yuri.

A dedicated teacher who re-evaluates her life and what she values the most.

I enjoyed this story overall, the backstory of what happened in the Ukraine was riveting.  Maggie's story was slower paced and a bit predictable, but held my interest. I liked the way the two stories came together to make this a memorable one for me. I would love to read more from this author.

I love the cover of this novel. The description had me intrigued and I was excited to start reading.

The book opens in 1999. Twenty-six-year-old, Maggie Topper has just moved into a small but lovely cottage with her boyfriend, Bill. Maggie is looking forward to starting her second year teaching sixth grade English Language Arts at Franklin Intermediate School.

Maggie formerly worked as a personal assistant at a prominent PR firm but she wasn’t happy working there. So she went back to school for a degree in teaching.

Maggie is busy getting her classroom ready when the principal asks to speak with her. He has an unusual request, a special assignment from the superintendent. He wants her to tutor an eleven-year-old boy named Yuri. Yuri was supposed to be in her class this year but is unable to attend school due to severe health issues. Maggie would tutor him in his home after school two days a week.

At first, Maggie is hesitant to take the position. Memories from her childhood, of another child in need flood her mind “ a painful reminder of the unfairness of life” . But ultimately, she decides to take the opportunity. She switched careers to make a difference and this boy needs her help.

Katya Krasny and her husband, Sasha emigrated from Ukraine before getting pregnant with Yuri. We are taken back to 1984 and learn more about Katya and Sasha’s lives in Kiev, their move to America, and their adjustment to living in the US.

Maggie meets Yuri Krasny and his family. Yuri isn’t thrilled that Maggie will be tutoring him. He is frustrated as he is stuck inside all day while other children are outside running and playing. At first, the visits don’t go very well. Maggie starts to worry that she's going to fail Yuri, but eventually she finds a way to connect with him.

“The thrill of teaching children is that they don’t edit themselves like adults do.”

Maggie doesn’t realize just how much this young boy will bring to her own life.

The Secret of Clouds ” is a story about relationships and how they can transform us. It was an enjoyable read, although I did find it a bit predictable and slow at times. But overall, this was a lovely story that I'm glad I read.

Alyson Richman indicated that the story is a “love letter to all the teachers I’ve had in my life who contributed to making me the writer I am today.” I could see how much she wanted to honor all teachers. Maggie’s passion for teaching definitely shines through and I was reminded of some of the wonderful teachers I had growing up.

I'd like to thank Berkley for providing me with a copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.

It I just so hard to write a review about a book that proved to be a good read, a three stars read. Readers always want to read books that have ratings above the simple good. There is, however,a reading place, time for these books, books that are perfectly fine, a story that reads quickly but is written in my opinion, simply. Quick, easy to read stories, are often enjoyable in times of stress, or during busy times of year, like now.

What I enjoyed: the story flowed very well.
Ballet
A teacher who is inventive and enjoys teaching.
Loved how baseball and baseball talk brought a father and son together, although I'm
not a Mets or Yankee fan.
The historical nightmare of Chernobyl.

What could have been better.
The story itself, I felt, needed more depth.
The characters just didn't seem real, were one dimensional, way too nice.

This was Angela, Esils and my monthly read. Not too surprised we all agreed.

A stunning story that enveloped me completely and pulled at my heartstrings!

Every once in a while when you finish a book you know it’s going to stick with you for a long time, this was one of those books. There was just something about this story that touched me deeply, and I really can’t put my finger on it. Perhaps it was the fact that this is a beautiful love story and tribute to teachers everywhere, my mother was a teacher, my daughter is in school now to be a teacher, they hold a special place in my heart. Or perhaps it was watching Katya and Sasha’s emotional struggle dealing with a sick child Yuri. It could have even been Yuri’s incredible passion for baseball, a game he himself will never be able to play. Regardless of what it was that completely captivated me, this was one lovely and emotional story!

Maggie is excited for the start of the school year when her principal reaches out and asks if she would be willing to tutor a boy who cannot come to school due to illness. At first Maggie is a bit hesitant afraid it might dredge up some old ghostss, but Maggie has too much compassion not to help a child in need. In the beginning Yuri was not receptive at all to Maggie, until they bonded over baseball. We also got a glimpse of Katya and Sasha’s lives in the Ukraine. Katya was a ballerina and Sasha an engineer, they both were in the Ukraine for the Chernobyl disaster. Their guilt over it perhaps being there exposure to nuclear power leading to Yuri’s heart defect was palpable. This story was also peppered throughout with family, food, romance, friendship, Art, and the violin.

Yuri really stole the show and my heart in this book. There was just something so innocent yet so wise about him, and I loved his bond and relationship with his parents, Maggie, and Finn. The mom in me could not help but put myself in Katya’s shoes and the human in me could not help but put myself in Maggie’s, I felt this emotional journey with the hearts of both these wonderful ladies. Maggie was such an energetic passionate teacher I enjoyed every minute I spend with her in the classroom and out. Katya was such a lovely loving mother and I loved that we got to see pieces of her past. Sasha was a remarkable man and husband, and I found it interesting how differently these two dealt with their son’s illness. There’s a part in the story regarding an assignment and letters that will make your heart both sing and cry. I could go on and on, but I will spare you all! Just read it!

Beautiful, evocative, and emotional, absolutely recommend!

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and ferries wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall

Passionate, compelling and evocative!

THE SECRET OF CLOUDS by ALYSON RICHMAN is an emotionally charged, tender, moving, beautiful and insightful contemporary novel that I absolutely loved and thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. The story was so beautifully told and totally touched my heart.

ALYSON RICHMAN delivers quite the awe-inspiring, emotional, touching, entertaining, well-written and unforgettable read here that will definitely stay with me for a very long time. I was totally invested in this story, fully absorbed in these characters lives and thoroughly enjoyed both storylines equally. The story and writing definitely held my full attention and I didn’t even care or notice that it might have been a little predictable. If a book can totally take you away into the world you are reading that for me is one extremely satisfying reading experience.

This is a book that I will always hold close to my heart.

Norma’s Stats:
Cover: Beautiful, intriguing, hopeful, huggable, spellbinding and an extremely emotive and fitting representation to storyline.
Title: Oh my goodness! The meaning behind this title is absolutely awesome, extremely fitting, and definitely heartwarming. Love...love….love it!!!
Writing/Prose: Well-written, perceptive, beautiful and extremely readable. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and it definitely resonated with me.
Plot: Engrossing, powerful, affecting, moving, interesting, enlightening, fast-paced, and highly entertaining.
Ending: A beautifully written, heartwarming and extremely satisfying ending! This was a huggable and endearing book.
Overall: A fantastic and captivating read that had me totally absorbed within this story right from the very start, thoroughly enjoying every minute of this unputdownable and heartfelt story! Would recommend!

I had a feeling about 20 pages in this would be an emotional read, and sure enough I was right. Whether you are a parent or not, I think it would be hard not to develop an attachment to a sick child. Yuri for sure is what drove the story.

Maggie, a young teacher, has agreed to help tutor Yuri, a boy who is not able to attend school due to his heart condition. His parents, Sasha and Katya, left Ukraine to live in America after the Chernobyl disaster. While Maggie is busy teaching Yuri reading and writing, she just might learn a thing or two from him as well.

This is the second book I have read recently in which a teacher does a writing assignment in which the children write a letter to their future selves. In this case, Maggie will send the sixth grade students' letters to them when they graduate high school. How the letters factor in later on in the story and when the secret of the clouds is revealed are really some touching and beautiful moments. The difference a good and passionate teacher can make in a child's life is also part of the appeal of this book.

While I did enjoy this book there was just something holding it back from being a 5 star read for me. The Maggie parts of the story that did not involve Yuri were the weakest in my opinion. I agree with another reviewer that it felt like any problem she faced was just magically resolved or moved on from without another mention. I just can't say I warmed up to the character 100%. Honestly though this is more nitpicking than anything as I did overall think this was a good read. So much so I finished it in a day.

Thank you to First to Read for the opportunity to read an advance digital copy! I was under no obligation to post a review and all views expressed are my honest opinion.

I can rely on Alyson Richman for an emotionally resonant historical novel, and The Secret of Clouds delivered. At its heart it is two things: a tribute to teachers and love for child.

Told in two storylines, past and present, the first takes place in Kiev in the 1980s around the time of the disaster at Chernobyl. Katya is a promising ballerina, and Sasha is a graduate student. The two are in love when tragedy strikes. They later have a child, Yuri, born with a health condition due to the after effects of the disaster.

The present storyline blends a dedicated, loving teacher, Maggie, into the present day with Katya, Sasha, and young Yuri. Requiring a teacher in the home due to his significant health needs, Yuri and Maggie take some time getting to know each other, but when they develop a bond, Maggie draws inspiration from Yuri’s wisdom and zest for life.

Easy-to-read, full of emotion, I was invested wholeheartedly in the characters of The Secret of Clouds. Maggie as a teacher epitomizes most of the teachers I know – selflessly giving their time and love to their students, advocating for their best interests.

You simply have to read the book to know where the title comes from, and the story behind the “Family Cloud.” The afterword is also not to be missed as Richman describes her inspiration for the book and her thankfulness for the teachers in her and her children’s lives. Overall, The Secret of Clouds was moving and insightful, and I’m grateful I read it.

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

The Secret of Clouds is a tenderly written heart-warming and heart-breaking story that explores the bond between a teacher and her student. Who soon find they can learn something from each other.

Alyson Richman captures a mother’s love, fear and sorrow, a teacher’s caring ways to make a difference with her students and an ill child’s courage to connect to the outside world. Through each character, we learn something about resilience, perseverance, acceptance, love and connections in many ways, sorrow and healing.

I really enjoyed the special connection and dynamics between the characters. Each connection is interesting and heart-warming. At times the pace is slow and predictable however I think it’s to bring a bit of relief to the reality of the story.

Norma and I read this one on our own since a few of our Traveling Sisters read this one because I couldn’t get our schedule organized. It is definitely one we recommend for group reads.

Catching up…

I saw one of your reviews of this book and decided I wanted to read it, too.

And…

Then it arrived from the library. At which point I realized I had already read it. Oh my! Have I read that many books in the last few years that I can’t remember I read it already? Yes.

Regardless…

Here is my review.

The story centers around a teacher’s experience tutoring a sick child and the bond they form. It also alternates between past and present in which we meet the child’s parents. There is also historical context with Kiev, Ukraine and Chernobyl.

And…

The story definitely fosters an appreciation for the work that teachers do, as we watch how the teacher makes learning more exciting for her students with meaningful reading and writing assignments.

As well as…

Appreciating what a teacher learns through her students.

Which…

Makes Maggie, the teacher and main narrator, a teacher we will not forget.

Even…

The author shares in her acknowledgments that this book is a “love letter to all the teachers.”

In many ways…

This story also brings many heart-warming characters for readers to appreciate – besides, Yuri, the student she tutors. There are also Maggie’s colleagues and her best friend, Suzie, the one we’re all grateful to have or wish we had.

Or…

Substitute music teacher Daniel who also happens to treasure beautifully-crafted violins. (There is an importance to his love of this, too.)

But…

The story was predictable.

Although…

There is an emotional swelling and surging to her narrative, which makes this author readable.

With…

A strong message that one person can make a big difference.

Which…

Makes this story also, heart-full and compelling.

Maggie Topper has moved from New York City to eastern Long Island where she will be teaching English at a middle school. This is a major career change and her first time working at a school. Her move to rural life was also motivated by her desire to live with her long-time boyfriend.

One of her early assignments is to tutor a child who is too ill to attend classes. Yuri Krasny has a congenital heart condition which keeps him home and isolated. He would love to play baseball and engage with other children but his body is too frail for a normal life. Over time Maggie and Yuri form a bond which impacts Maggie beyond the classroom.

The Secret Of Clouds is a story about family, love, and friendship. Alison Richman is a wonderful storyteller whose books always depict rich character development. This book demonstrates the author's unique talents in interlacing multiple time periods.

Tearfully beautiful and filled with a certain sort of magic that only an inspiring story can deliver, Alyson Richman’s The Secret of Clouds is a book I encourage everyone to open their heaart to. I’m still a bit choked up over this story in a wonderful way. It spoke to the child in me who still remembers that one teacher that really changed my life, and it spoke to the adult in me who knows how special the imaginations of youth are. And it also is just an incredible story about the love of a family, all wrapped up in the connection between teacher and students. Wonderful!

About the Book

When Maggie Topper is first assigned to work with Yuri, achild suffering from a congenital heart defect that prevents him from attendingschool with his peers, she is hesitant to accept. Maggie remembers a friendfrom childhood Ellie who passed away one summer, and she has never reallyrecovered from that heart ache.

But from the moment Maggie meets Yuri, it is so clear that thereis something special about him. I loved seeing Maggie and Yuri get to know oneanother. At first, Maggie doesn’t know how to engage this frail, despondent child. But eventually her friend and colleague Suzy suggests that kids are perceptive—they know when you are putting on a brave face. Yuri is a child who has never been treated like a real kid due to his condition. As they bond over a shared love of baseball, pizza, and writing, I fell in love with their story.

Reflection

I was captivated by the story of Yuri’s parents Katya and Sasha, who fled Ukraine for a better life in America. Katya was a ballet dancer, and her quiet grace as a person shined through the pages. She had such fierce love for Yuri. She was so afraid to let him live, because of her fear of losing him. Sasha is also a wonderful character. I think readers will be mesmerized by their story, and what they had to go through to get an opportunity to provide medical care for Yuri. Heart-warming!

Maggie also has a storyline outside of just her work with Yuri that I really enjoyed. I won’t say too much, but I found it to beincredibly authentic and showcased the ups and downs we go through in life, as well as how our passions can make tough times bearable.

One other thing I loved about this book was the importance of food. Maggie’s family is Italian and they show love and caring through food. I found my mouth watering often hearing what Maggie or her mother were cooking, and I loved reading about the meaning of the small acts of preparing a meal. Food is also the first thing that really bonds Maggie and Katya, as Katya explains her own Ukarainian dishes that hold meaning and provide comfort. I found these food traditions to be so wonderful, and they helped these two women connect in a way that words alone could not.

This was such a sweet and enjoyable read!

This book was powerful for me because I used to be a teacher and it brought back so many memories and made my heart happy :).

There are two parallel storylines that are brought to light in The Secret of Clouds. Maggie is a teacher and connects with one student in particular Yuri who has a heart condition that is mostly taught at home. As the story progress, Maggie and Yuri form a powerful bond as they both are inspired and learn from one another. The second storyline is about Yuri's parents move from Soviet Union to the United States in the 1980's.

It was a tad bit predictable where the story was going but I still enjoyed this emotional and raw story.

Alyson Richman displays a beautiful tribute to devoted teachers and all the ways that they inspire their students. Our kids need more teachers like Maggie in this big world of ours <3.

Overall, a sweet and enjoyable read.

4 stars for The Secret of Clouds.

The Secret of Clouds has two parallel story lines. Maggie is a young teacher, trying to find her way personally and professionally. She makes a connection with a young student, Yuri, who has a serious heart condition and must be taught at home most the time. The other story line involves Yuri’s parents, and their move to the US from the former Soviet Union in the 1980s. The Secret of Clouds could have been much better, but it suffered from simplistic writing, a very predictable plot and unsubtle emotions. I like my characters to be a bit more nuanced — everyone is nice and well meaning, except for Maggie’s boyfriend. Unexpectedly, the end was a bit stronger than most of the book. But, overall, this was a meh — a low 3 stars.

It was made much more enjoyable though as one of my monthly reads with Angela and Diane. And thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for an opportunity to read an advance copy.

This book...oh my, after finishing it, I had to sit with tears running down my face as I let all the poignant, heartbreaking yet wonderfully inspiring emotions from The Secret of Clouds course through me. I cannot imagine reading this book without being affected in some way by the incredible characters, heartening plot, or Alyson Richman's breathtaking, lyrical writing. This is my first time reading a book by Richman, but it definitely won't be my last.

As many of you know, I've been an English Literature professor for 17 years, so I was quite thrilled to read a book where the main character is a 6th grade English Language Arts teacher...yes, the teaching environment is vastly different but to be a teacher, an educator, is a profession that I truly believe with all of my heart is a calling for the ones who want to instill the love of learning, inspire, and help students of all ages discover their own potential. Even more, I believe it's about discovering what your students can teach you. So astoundingly did Richman capture all those things in this book, that I was completely blown away!

Maggie Topper is a young teacher who has so, so much to give her students and wants them to learn, strive for more, and grow. I just marveled at her character because Maggie is every teacher who inspired me to reach higher and realize that I was stronger and could achieve anything I could dream. No, Maggie is not perfect--she's human, flawed, and very real, but she has the passion and dedication that every true educator whom I've ever known has shown. Can I just say (if you can't tell) how much I love her?

Katya, the beautiful ballerina who can no longer dance, and Sasha, the Jewish scientist who faces persecution under the Soviet regime, are young lovers from Kiev who came to the United States for a better life. Their story is romantic, lovely, poignant, and so bittersweet. I love how their story in the past while living in Ukraine is intertwined with the story in the present day, especially as we learn about the awful disaster that happened in Ukraine that unknowingly to them leads to their son Yuri being born with a terrible heart condition.

Yuri is a character who will always stay in my heart, and his story is one I don't want anyone to miss! His heart condition prevents him from attending school, so Maggie begins tutoring him at home. It isn't until Maggie discovers they share a love of baseball that she tears down his walls and forges a deep bond with this wise beyond his age boy--a boy with the same dreams, hopes, and desires as every other boy his age. I loved his joy at the small things, and it reminded me while reading not to take everything for granted and to look at the pleasures in each and every day. Yuri truly reminded me of all the students who have ever touched my heart and for that, I'm grateful.

The Secret of Clouds is one of my favorite books of 2019, and I highly recommend it.  Richman manages to explore the love between mother and child, between father and son, between teacher and students, between lovers, and one's hopes and dreams for tomorrow. The book is uplifting while being emotional, and I'm going to hold it close to my heart!

3.75 stars Thanks to Edelweiss and Berkley for a chance to read and review this ARC. Publishes February 19, 2019.

If there were a place that everyone could find each other after they passed, Yuri a small Ukraine boy, dreamed it would be a family cloud.

A heartfelt novel with a great story line and wonderful characters celebrating teachers, of all ages. Music played a major role in this novel, letting you believe that even it was a cherished character. There is so much creativity in this book, both in the story itself and in the lives of the characters. Melding a Ukraine family into a Long Island existence, with factors related to the Chernobyl nuclear melt down, this contemporary story is based on a true life experience. Richman has put forth a story both sad and sincere and well worth the time to read.

The book tells of Yuri, the young son of Ukranian immigrants who is isolated from other children because of a rare heart condition. When Maggie agrees to come teach Yuri at home, she develops a special bond with the boy and finds herself transformed. A magical story of unlikely friendships and the ways in which teacher-student bonds can change our lives.

Titulo: El secreto de las nubes
Autor: Alyson Richman
Motivo de lectura: #The52BookClub2024
Lectura / Relectura: Lectura
Mi edicion: Electronico
Puntuacion: 3.5/5

When tragedy strikes the City of Kiev in Ukraine, Katya and Sasha are blissfully unaware of what is happening to their world. All they know is that the days are unusually warm and the water is like a bath and they delight in it. Years later when their son, Yuri, is born in America, they learn that unseen forces from that long ago time has caused their baby to be born with a heart condition. He needs to be protected from germs so is unable to attend school. A young, dedicated teacher Maggie is asked to tutor Yuri but at first is reluctant to do so because of childhood memories that still cause her pain. But when she meets Yuri, she gladly agrees to teach him as she knows she has met someone who will be very special in her life.

This lovely book truly touched my heart in many ways. There’s the love story of Katya and Sasha and Katya’s dream of becoming a ballerina. There’s the story of Katya and Sasha who come to America as immigrants with so much hope for the future, only to learn of their child’s illness. There’s the story of Maggie as a young girl who suffered a loss she never is able to leave behind her. There’s the story of the grown up Maggie whose soul rejoices every time she walks into her classroom and faces the children she cares so much for. But most of all there’s the story of Yuri, whose soul refuses to bend under adversity and who teaches all around him how to live each day to its fullest.

This is the first book I’ve read by Alyson Richmond. She’s a writer whose poetic side shines throughout her work. The ending is one of the most touching I’ve ever read. I can only wish that my own grandsons will always have teachers as dedicated as Maggie.

Recommended.

This book was given to me by the publisher in return for an honest review.

The Secret of Clouds is about a young teacher, Maggie, whose enthusiasm for her middle school students and her passion for introducing them to the joys of reading and writing seems limitless. Maggie is asked to take on an additional role, tutoring a 12-year-old boy named Yuri who is unable to come to school because of a health condition. Hesitantly, Maggie agrees, but soon is completely charmed by this lonely boy and becomes determined to help him regain an interest in the world around him.

Bonding through his love of baseball, Maggie slowly draws Yuri out of his shell of apathy, and soon has him engaging with her and the worlds of literature she's introduced him to with real interest and insight. As she begins to earn Yuri's trust, Maggie also learns more about his parents, Katya and Sasha, and their desperate love for their ill son.

Katya and Sasha lived in Kiev at the time of the Chernobyl disaster, and while they themselves suffered no adverse effects, like so many others, their offspring suffered birth defects -- in this case, a rare heart ailment -- due to their own radiation exposure.

Meanwhile, as Maggie witnesses Yuri's struggles to live his limited life to the fullest, she reassesses her own life and relationships, seeing where her true happiness lies and making the changes needed to live life to her best ability.

The Secret of Clouds is touching and appealing in many ways, yet something about the writing style let me down. It's the old "show, don't tell" issue: I felt like Maggie was sharing a summary of her experiences, rather than drawing me in enough to see the events myself. The writing kept me at a distance throughout, as entire months or sometimes years went by in the span of a few paragraphs. There was no sense of immediacy; I rarely felt as though I had entered into a scene or had a genuine moment of emotional connection. For example, when Maggie meets and falls in love with a new man in her life, it's very nice for her, yet I'd be hard pressed to tell you a thing about him other than that he's a musician and seems to be a really great guy. Granted, their love story was not the main point of this book, but he feels like a cipher to me.

From the synopsis, I expected Katya and Sasha to have equal time in this novel alongside Maggie, but that's not the case. While we see their lives in Kiev in the early chapters, once it's been established that they were exposed to fallout from Chernobyl, the story shifts entirely to its 1999/2000 setting, focusing on Maggie and Yuri. Katya and Sasha become supporting characters, in the background as Yuri's parents, but not central point-of-view characters.

The Secret of Clouds is a fine read with an interesting story to tell, but unfortunately the writing style kept me from feeling truly emotionally invested. I will say, though, that if every student had a teacher as committed, idealistic, and compassionate as Maggie, the world would be a much, much better place!

Maggie is a young, enthusiastic English language arts teacher who enjoys challenging her sixth grade students to find beauty and meaning in the written word. She has decorated her classroom to reflect the theme of “The Mind is a Powerful Tool”. When her school’s principal asks her to tutor a student at his home, Maggie is a bit apprehensive. Yuri is a child who loves to learn and would like to be at school, but because of his health problems, he must stay at home. As the school year progresses, Maggie and Yuri form a powerful bond as they learn from each other.

Author Alyson Richman’s beautifully written novel is a tribute to dedicated and devoted teachers and the ways in which they inspire their students. It’s an emotional, heartfelt story of love, perseverance, family, and courage that you won’t soon forget.

Thank you to author Alyson Richman, Berkley Publishing Group, and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC of this unforgettable novel.

This morning I did not take a shower. You readers know the feeling. You are immersed in a world, and even though you are due somewhere at 9AM, you find yourself transported into another world sobbing, just needed to feel through the experience and ride it to its natural conclusion. Shower be damned... I did pause to watch with my husband the early morning talk show clips of Donald Trump Jr embarrassing himself on the View. And to hear more about the Supreme Court's decision to fine Donal Trump 2 million dollars for siphoning Charity funds for personal or political use. But other than that, I was in Alyson Richman's lovely world of Maggie and 12 year old Yuri, and Katya and Sasha and Daniel and Suzie. Transported back to Middle School, where literature and childhood, and imagination, and locating yourself in the world, and wondering all have a place. Where beauty and loss are intertwined. Not sure this was a YA book in the least, but it had that feel, in terms of both the characters, plot, and themes, and yet the writing was quite exquisite. And what is unforgettable, is Maggie's father, who is retired, and now despite severe arthritis, became a violin maker in the basement of their home. His careful treatment of wood and what makes music and sound, is the perfect corollary, to what literature does, and love. And dreams. Just loved this little ditty.
