The year is 1942, and the horrors of war have finally reached Crowford. As air raid casualties are rushed to the local hospital, the town faces one of its greatest tests. But the worst is yet to come...
While desperately tending to the dying, Nurse Alice Johnson begins to experience a series of terrifying visions. The dead have a warning for the entire town, one that seems to indicate a fiery end for everyone at the hospital. At first, Alice manages to convince herself that she's simply imagining things, but then the warnings become even more urgent.
Soon, Alice begins to realize that the dead are trying to send her a very specific message. Even as her superiors tell her that she's losing her mind, Alice struggles to understand the nature of the tragedy that's about to strike the town. Will Alice manage to decode the warnings in time, or is the hospital destined to be consumed by fire?
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Spooky and intense, this was an amazing read. I never know what to expect from an Amy Cross story, they are either very good (like this one) or frustratingly mediocre. However, this was an intelligent well constructed plot expertly delivered. In my opinion this was, so far, the best story in "The Ghosts of Crowford" series. Highly recommended!
No offense, Ma'am, but you don't exactly look...” Her voice trailed off as she looked May up and down. “You seem a little scary,” she added finally. “I think it's the burned skin, and the fact that I can see bits of bone poking out. Then there's the smell to consider, because you really reek of... well, lots of things, really. I've seen plenty of bodies in my time, even my own, and even I find it hard to look at you. I can't even begin to imagine what a child would think. Please don't take this the wrong way, but you're actually kind of repulsive. You look like someone tried to fry you.”
Having now read the 7th book in the Crowford series, I have decided not to move there anytime now or in the future. How can a Hospital be dangerous? It's a good place where people are made well and all the nurses are 'angels', I should know because I was a nurse many moons ago and that's what we did. In my day the laundry room was one of the best places to hide away for a short while, so why isn't it like that in Crowford? A bomb lands on a house and its occupants are taken to Crowford Hospital. Some have horrendous burns and some have got away without a scratch, and there the horror begins.............
Oh my gosh, this was unexpected, mysterious, disturbing, and gory. The best of the series up to now, and the best horror novel I've read in some time. A compassionate and hardworking nurse, an arrogant but competent doctor, a terribly badly wounded victim of a World War 2 bombing, the latter's young daughter, a collection of ghosts, and a few other characters must make their way through the strangest night of their lives in the hospital; a night where unsettling and impossible things happen until the main character works out how to solve it all. Even outside this series, this would have been a brilliant standalone piece of horror.
Another good supernatural story in the Crowford series, this time, taking place during WW2 in an English hospital.
Alice was certainly a likeable character, even if the rest were slightly odd. There was the despicable arrogant doctor - not surprising - and an array of mostly strange people, not least the...no spoilers from me.
Fast-paced and spooky and enjoyable, despite the American English in an English story by a British author. Some errors, too, however, I loved the great storytelling.
I just can’t stop reading Amy Cross’s many Series (‘s?)! I started with the Haunting of Hadlow House and moved right into The Ghosts of Rose Radcliffe…and now the Ghosts of Crowford. I LOVE getting to know the town- the pubs, the churches, the ports, etc. And the characters become your friends or acquaintances. Amy’s books have NEVER disappointed! And Kindle makes it so easy! When I finish one, Kindle shows me a link to the next one in the series…and I keep absorbing the world of Amy Cross- a world I feel a part of now.
For some reason, I was just not thrilled with this one. IDK why. I can't pinpoint any specific reason, except that maybe I just found it easy to put down. I'm STILL WAITING for a REAL full length book from this author, rather than something that can be read in an afternoon. Can't really judge her writing skills if the book isn't long enough to give her enough time to develop characters and plot more completely.
The reason on deciding three stars was because I found the book a little muddley to start of with, especially during the middle part of it. I was in two minds whether to put the book down but I always try to finish what I start so I carried on. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy it, whereas other books written by this author have been enjoyable.
Leave it to Amy Cross to write a book you can't put down. The story was a little different but enjoyable and she always picks such unusual places and people. She has a knack of getting you interested and then you can't let go of it. I think, no matter who you are, you will enjoy this book. It's a little different but a great read.
I was so hooked that I read the entire book in a matter of hours. And then the very end came. No explanation of what happened to Cleo after being found besides 5 years later and then nothing. Ugh! It's frustrating because I need to know more. Fingers crossed that maybe you mention something in the next book....

I’ve read all the books so far in this series, this one I thought had the biggest twist. The year is 1942, wartime. The Crawford hospital has an amazing story to tell if you listen to the past.
The story has a good ending that tied up all the previous pages of confusion. The wasn't my favorite of the Crawford series but still worth the read. It is entertaining.
