Based in New Zealand’s stunning South Island, Peter Ryan’s writing and images have appeared in the world’s finest outdoor books and journals.
His new collection delivers superbly written essays on hunting, the natural world and life in general from an acknowledged master of outdoor literature.
In vivid detail they take the reader on adventures - from the jagged peaks of New Zealand’s Southern Alps to the scorching deserts and steaming jungles of Africa. It is a world of tough mountaineers, sunburned professionals, eccentric characters and stunning game species, but also one rich in the pleasures of hunting, gun dogs and family.
Hunting Life – Moments of Truth is illustrated by some of the finest outdoor artists and photographers working today.
In turn wildly adventurous and gently sentimental, these tales are, in Ryan’s own words, ‘a hymn to an old way of life, and a long love letter of sorts.’

Extraordinary writing and images. Up there with Hemingway, Ruark and Gene Hill.
The author puts you right there with him, whether it’s facing Cape buffalo in Africa, chasing alpine game high in the mountains or just a casual stroll with gun and dog. Makes for a fascinating and thoughtful read.
A masterclass from one of the greatest writers in the business. Superb.
This book is about hunting and all the different types of it. my favourite part of the story is when they dog runs out and gets shot and dies a horrible death. my favourite character is the dog because he was cool but then i had to get a new favourite because he died. What I learnt was to not run out infront of a gun because you might end up like the dog.
