First off, I would like to thank my real life friend, for allowing me the privilege to read her book. This isn't necessarily my favorite genre, but I gave it a go. I am actually pissed it ended on a cliff hanger. Now I have to wait for the next one, teehee! I am biased, but also it was a good book. 4 stars.
Save My Heart, is about a deranged serial killer, focused on serving the Lord. With most crazy murderers, following the orders of "GOD", they think they are saving the souls of the people they kill. In fact, the irony is, they too are doing wrong. Thou shall not kill, isn't meant for just some people, but all people.
Jodi Lamont is a 30 year old drifter, working at a book store for minimum wage, when gorgeous Detective Jack Lawson walks into her life. Her sister Hannah calls Jodi a martyr because she tends to take care of everyone else, but herself. Which is true. Jodi went to school to be a Sped teacher and instead, dropped everything to take care of her sick grandparents, then again with her dying Aunt Mary.
When Jack starts asking questions about Jodi's parents death, her story and his don't match. She doesn't want to dredge up those old emotions. She wants to run away. However, with her dying Aunt she has no choice, but to return to her hometown of Bayrock, Maine, where one mystery after another is soon to be revealed.
I dropped a star because again, this isn't my favorite kind of genre. Even though this is technically a thriller, I just hate reading drama and this story has plenty. Miscommunication or just not saying what you want to say is one of my biggest pet peeves in stories. There isn't anything wrong with the writing, a lot of contemporary has that troupe in their stories. I just hate the back and forth drama of it all. I kept shouting just say it!
The things I loved about the book: it was intense and fast paced. The killer was ruthless and definitely put me on edge. Even though I have read many books where the killer uses God as his driving force to kill, I enjoyed the killers M.O., it was something I haven't read before. Sometimes you get things left with bodies at the crime scene or on the victims body and this one was unique. As I am more of a thriller/horror reader, I definitely enjoyed the antagonist's story more than the protagonist.
If you enjoy thrillers that are not police procedural's that are fast paced with a bit of romance, then I think you will really have fun reading this one. I read this book in 2 sittings and I'm definitely looking forward to book 2, where I hope we get more of the badass Captain.
Jodi goes back home to take care of her sick aunt, not expecting to relive the death of her parents and fall for the detective looking for answers. Did her parents really die in a car accident or did something else happen to them? And why is this all surfacing now, decades later?
WHAT I LIKED
The mystery. I devoured this book because I was so damn intrigued! I kept thinking, what is going on? What are these people hiding? Why is this town as a whole so suspicious? I had so many questions, which led to more questions, and I absolutely loved it. I just HAD to know what happened, so I read this book in one day, which is rare for me.
The suspense. I was on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE book. I almost always lose interest at some point and the plot gets slow or dull, but that definitely did not happen here. At one point, my jaw was practically on the floor. I literally put the book down and just said, omg, omg, wtf?? It gets intense!
Unexpected. I did NOT expect to dive into this crime-ridden murder mystery. I was expecting some typical romance with a cop while investigating a case type of thing, and I couldn’t have been more wrong. Yes, there was a little romance, but that definitely was not the focus of the story.
The killer’s POV. I surprisingly enjoyed this aspect so much. I loved being inside the killer’s mind. It was sick and twisted and dark, but I was so interested! I needed to know more.
Fast-paced. A story being fast-paced is usually something I complain about, but I actually was so grateful that it was this time. Things happened so quickly that it just added to the excitement. It was nonstop action and suspense. I felt like I was watching a movie. It was great!
That end! Are you kidding? What a cliffhanger! I did not expect that.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK FOR ME
Typos. This did not affect my rating or opinion of the book and it’s an easy fix, so it may not even be an issue in the near future, but there were a lot of typos, and it became hard to ignore.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
Oh wow. What can I say? This book was just such a surprise. I can’t even put into words how I much I enjoyed it. I have never read Kristi Jun before, but now I am on a mission to read everything she has ever written. I want more. The cover and book blurb already had me excited, but the book itself is on another level. I’m so glad I didn’t overlook this one. If you enjoy a good serial killer mystery with a touch of romance and you don’t mind the dark and gritty, then trust me when I say that you need to read this one. I cannot believe I have to wait for the next book! I will be impatiently waiting for this one…

I could not put down this book! It has all the elements I love in Kristi Jun's other books-- interesting, well-developed characters to root for and an exciting romance-- all mixed in with the intriguing plot twists of a contemporary thriller! Jun's characters are complex and interesting. Her descriptions of a small town in Maine pull you right into the setting and the story. I found myself continually trying to guess what would happen next. (I was wrong!) Jodi is a relatable heroine. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. If you like thrillers, if you like romance, read this book!
