"Studies show that sleep plays a vital role in reducing stress, lowering health risks and increasing productivity. But what happens when you simply can't sleep? Laura Harris Smith will make you aware of the harmful spiritual, emotional and physical effects of what is keeping you awake and lead you to a place of peace where you will learn to hear God speak"--
I found the insights in this book on how to give things to God really do help. The different changes that Laura offers are ideas that I am going to work into my life.
Thank you Bethany House, Chosen Books, and NetGalley for this advance read.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I appreciate Smith advocating us exchanging our worries for God's weapons. I appreciate that, while much of this book is about spiritual issues, there are some practical teachings about receiving necessary sleep. I appreciate her teaching about spiritual warfare. This is a book for Charismatic Christians and there is much in the book about demonic spirits and how they act. I like her teaching on dreams, how God communicates through them, the kinds of dreams, etc. I like her teaching about dealing with those pesky voices in our head. I like her emphasis on prayer and appreciated her insight of watching the news as gathering wartime intelligence for prayer.
But I felt there are some very odd aspects included in this book on sleeping well. Smith includes much political commentary. She is free about her very pro-Trump views although she prays for all presidents, regardless of party. She believes the claims of voter fraud and irregularities, even mentioning Mike Lindell and his claims. This book seems to have gone to print before the many court decisions against those who claimed voter fraud. I find it odd that someone who advocates insight into spiritual issues was taken in by the false and unprovable claims made by those unhappy with the results of the 2020 US presidential election. I also found it odd Smith mentions her oils and books so often. Having been a retailer myself (owning a Christian bookstore for 33 years) it seemed like some of this book was a sales pitch for readers to buy her other products. But then, she also has a sales pitch for her good friend, Mike Lindell's pillow, and spends pages detailing his story. I found it also odd that she includes much about her ordination as a woman, the criticism and her defense. There is also teaching on the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues and a section on how the US states got their borders.
If you want information on getting a good night of rest, you'll find some here. You will also find material that, to my mind, didn't have much to do with sleeping at all.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This is not the book I expected it to be. What I expected was a book about dealing with and overcoming anxiety and improving one's sleep. That was not what I found here, though, instead, finding the book to be far more focused on the author's self-image as an expert on subjects of spiritual warfare. This was not necessarily an unwelcome surprise, but the author's perspective demonstrates a particular approach to matters of psychology and spirituality. Those who are more aware of the author's perspective might find this book to be less of a surprise than I did, and that might make this book easier to enjoy because my mystification of the book's contents relative to its title caused some issues for me.
This book is about 250 pages long and consists of ten chapters that view the issue of sleep and giving it to God (the titular subject matter) as more of an extended metaphor about how various spiritual and emotional issues can be compared to things that either help or harm one's sleep life. So it is, for example, that fear, addictions, and unforgiveness are the junk that is under one's bed (7), political theater, social media, and television are the world outside one's window (5), and monitoring spirits, familiar spirits, and a wardrobe to die for are the monsters in the closet (3). The author shows a strong interest in dreams--it is a large part of her ministry--and also has a lot more to say about the influences that are present in our lives than might have been assumed to be the case from the start.
I liked the idea of this book. We all need to give our worries to God and to stress less. I appreciated some of the practical tips. I definitely appreciated the biblical counsel and all of the verses. Many of these ideas were reminders for me, and I think we all need those sometimes.
This book started out strong for me, but then the author went in a variety of directions that I did not anticipate. I should have guessed that with "dream more" there would be a section on dreams. But I did not anticipate being guided toward seeking prophetic dreams and interpreting their meaning. I am not wanting to call into question whether or not the author had these experiences or that God spoke to her in dreams. He possibly did. But I am a bit leery of seeking such experiences.
I differ with the author on several of her beliefs. She has what many would consider to be a strong, charismatic faith. I cannot join her in some of those opinions. Her perspective on spiritual warfare was intense, and I have not heard it stated that way before. While I do think God uses women in the church, I am not convinced that it should be up in front. For those that tend to align with her beliefs, they will probably be greatly blessed and encouraged by her words.
I am all for sharing experiences. After all, what has happened to us influences us. But perhaps too many examples were shared for me. I would appreciate hearing such details if I am drinking coffee with a friend. But for an author that I do not know, there was definitely a disconnect. I cannot help but question a bit of the authenticity and relevancy.
What else bothered me about this book is that the author used it promote her other books and her business. Hearing how God prompted her to create oils turned into a sales pitch. Perhaps the programs she has developed are helpful, but they were presented in a bit of a pushy way.
All in all, I appreciated all of the Scripture references. I could have benefitted from a few less examples. I am encouraged that a woman who is strong in faith can share her testimony. But everything was not quite for me.
My copy was downloaded through NetGalley. I wanted to read and review this book All opinions are my own.
There were parts of this book that I enjoyed, and parts that I couldn't stand...and it was pretty much either / or, with little to no middle ground. I get skeptical of people who claim to have that many prophecies, and include a dream dictionary in a Christian book. But my biggest issue, I suppose, with the book was that it appeared to be a 'sneeze book,' meaning it seemed like every other page the author was directing us to purchase another one of her books or resources. I just want to read this one....not be told to go purchase several other books.
Reduce stress and improve sleep Among other things Laura Harris Smith, N.D., is a certified counselor, naturopathic doctor, executive producer and host of theThree and an author. With "Give It to God and Go to Bed. Stress Less, Sleep Better, Dream More". The book was published by Bethany House - Chosen Books. It contains ten chapter with topics such as "The Distraction down the Hall", "The Monster in Your Closet", or "The Writing on the Wall". Smith states her goal as a vow: "Here is my vow to you: I am devoting myself to helping you change the way you process your daytime stresses and nighttime burdens. If you will glance over this book’s chapter titles, you will notice that each one contains a preposition: “The Monsters in Your Closet.” “The Weapons under Your Pillow.” “The World outside Your Window.” “The Writing on the Wall.” The entire book is set in your bedroom, where we are going to tuck you in, get you to sleep, revive your dream life and fill your prayer life with purpose and peace. So whatever your pre-position as you begin, prepare yourself for taking a new position altogether" (in chapter 1 - The Distraction down the Hall). She is right when she writes in the same chapter: "We need to learn how to pick our battles, letting Papa God fight for us so that we are not stressed-out, worrisome, workaholic insomniacs". Smith talks openly and honestly about her own experiences. She offers videos with nightly blessings on her website for the readers. The book also contains notes for reference and further study. I really appreciated that she closes every chapiter with questions and prayer. But there are also things that might not be appreciated by every readers, e.g. in chapter 5 (The World outside your Window) she talks a lot about American politics which, in my opinion has nothing to do with sleeping well and are less relevant for readers outside of the USA. Mike Lindell's story in chapter 7 (The Junk under Your Bed) is promoting his company "My Pillow" which I did not appreciate at all. She writes also heavily about her dreams and about Mike Lindell's dreams about "My Pillow". Lastly her argumentation for being an ordained women minister has, in my opinion, nothing to do with the topic of the book which is about better sleep. The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #GiveItToGodAndGoToBed #Netgalley
Do you have trouble sleeping, are you tired all the time? Ms. Smith states that stress is at the bottom of most of our troubles, and if it isn't addressed, no end of physical and emotional problems will be the result. She knows what she is talking about because she suffered horribly from years of little sleep.
The author states that three things are responsible for most of our problems: stress, work, and worry. When these things are addressed, our life will turn around. She advises giving the things that have you stressed over to God, quit working at a reasonable time, and make yourself go to bed.
This book is devoted to telling you how to change your life for the good. The author states that if you follow her advice, your life will improve physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Changing will be a lot of work, but if God is included, your healing will come about much sooner.
I think a plan to reduce stress in our lives is very important, so following the suggestions of Ms. Smith may be the way to make life changes. The one thing I know for certain is that inviting God to help in all areas of our life is absolutely something that can bring positive change. You must decide, or try for yourself, the author's other suggestions. She writes from a charismatic point of view. I recommend this 5-star book to those wanting to improve their lifestyle, feel better, and get rest.
Chosen Books has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, “Give it to God and Go to Bed,” for the purpose of review.
I absolutely love this book! I decided to take it with me on a recent vacation and read it. It has been from the United States to Germany to all of Greece and now on to Ireland and Scotland! I used to have a hard time going to sleep at night and also staying awake in the daytime. Most days, I had to have a nap which messed up my night time sleep cycle. Through changing my diet and becoming more active, which resulted in losing weight, I have been able to restore my sleep in a way that I never dreamed possible. However, the part of this book that really intrigued me was prophetically dreaming more. This book shares very practical tips on how to create a space that is peaceful sleep inducing! I am so excited to implement some of the tips in my own bedroom.
One of the things that I've been practicing on vacation is letting go of social media and constant news. I'm trusting it all to God. I think that's what makes a true vacation! However, this book explains that you can live the vacation life every day by casting your burdens on God, knowing and trusting that he directs our path. This book is ultimately about prioritizing what is actually important and getting rid of the clutter that fills our life with things that don't make us fulfilled or able to listen to God's instructions. It shows practical ways to prepare ourselves for sleep, lighten our load, hear from God and then go out and DO what God is calling us to do!
There is some sensible advice in here (ditching sleep in favour of more work while raising six children is bad for your health, who knew?), but I found myself quite disturbed by the author quoting Scripture and then claiming that her own definition of a term was what was being referred to. Older translations (the author uses the KJV, which is in Early Modern English) speak of "familiar spirits" where translations into Modern English generally use "mediums" or "the spirits of the dead" or "people who consult the spirits of the dead". The author's definition of a "familiar spirit" is "a monitoring spirit of demonic origin" and she says "what if you are consulting with familiar spirits and don't know it?" I'm pretty sure that nowhere does the Law of Moses prescribe a death penalty for something a person might not even know they are doing. Deciding on your own meanings for words in the Bible is not how you find truth - and elsewhere the author does seek the original meaning of a word in the Greek text in order to support another argument.
And like other readers, I was put off by the commercial content of the book, including the promotion of essential oil blends which she claims God gave her the recipes for, but which she has nonetheless patented and trademarked, presumably to ensure no one is blessed by them without paying her first.
I vacillated back and forth on my feelings about this book. Some spiritual things really resonated with me with the points she was trying to make about incorporating prayer and faith and God in our lives, and then the rest of the time it was a self-promotion/sales book on "buy all my other books and products, oh, and buy my friends' products too!" While personal experiences make things more real and relatable, this went beyond that for me. If the author had focused solely on her personal experiences and not product/book promotion, I would have given this a higher rating. Finally, towards the last third of the book she focused less on all those things, but there was too much of it in the book for me personally. I did highlight many of her spiritual insights and I'm glad she included a copy of the picture she had drawn about her dream with Jesus binding her wounds, that was beautiful and brought that personal experience more to life. I just wish the book had less of the other and more of the rest.
***I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.***
I opened this book thinking I was going to learn how to get better sleep at night, but I finished it with a whole lot more than just that. This book was a huge faith-builder for me regarding dreams, hearing God’s voice, and prayer. Author Laura H Smith writes with a beautiful blend of personal testimony (that will wet your appetite for the supernatural) and scripture (that will build your faith to experience and have confidence in it). Before I was even halfway through the book, I had already received 2 prophetic dreams from the Lord that I truly believe I received because of the spiritually hungry prayers I prayed throughout this read. The end of the book also contains a very practical 10-day guide to better sleep that recaps each chapter and aids readers in applying the content to their lives. If you are in need of better sleep at night, struggle to release life’s stressors to God, and long for a powerful dream life, this book is absolutely for you!!
This book is the real deal. I love that, Give it to God and Go to Bed, met my expectations. I really appreciate this book and Laura Harris Smith. I highly recommend it. It is full of great tips, biblically sound, informative in issues of Sleep, and easy to follow. I have completed several of the suggestions given and have obtained much better and needed Peace, Rest, Relaxation. Plus, I received a Prophetic Dream this week! Yes! Which I'm working through the message with the help of the Holy Spirit and Laura's suggestions on how to process and interpret a Prophetic Dream. God wants all of us to Sleep better and live Peace through Him. I encourage you to get this book. It will minister your body, mind and spirit.
I really enjoyed this book and wanted to read it from beginning to end without putting it down. I have read most books from this author and find her to be very knowledgeable and sincere in her mission to help others. Laura Harris Smith is a very creative writer with great ideas and suggestions. Her energy is "catching". She gives suggestions to help with sleep which is a major struggle for me. This book will be a good resource and in time, with application and practice I believe I may master the task of sleeping. I struggled between 4-5 stars only because some of her other books are my favorite and there are some statements I am not sure about (which may be how I interpreted what was written), but nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to others. I love the videos.
PERFECT BEDSIDE READ! After this 10-course meal of tackling sleep obstacles, I feel like taking a long nap...which of course is the point! The book is its own object lesson of filling you up with nutritious and tasty soul food and giving you the permission to enjoy the fruits of your full belly with a good, productive snooze. Analogies aside, this Dr. Laura gives her readers practical and sometimes unexpected advice to improve their sleep and dreams, thus, improving their overall health - body, mind and spirit. [SPOILER] And, don't miss the 10 Days of Good Nights Videos practical application program at the end.
As a Clinical Christian counselor, I feel “Give It To God And Go To Bed” is an extremely timely work. So many people are struggling with stress, anxiety, worry, and insomnia that really need the Biblical counsel and practical methods presented in this book. Insights from, prayer strategies and decerning God’s voice, to identifying unhealthy “Behaviors, Attitudes, Reactions and Expression” (BARE),“ to the “ABCs for ZZZs”. A person will find an abundance of wisdom, encouragement, and practical insight to combat the many factors robbing us of sleep, rest, and ultimately peace.
So grateful for this book! I felt as though the author held my hand and walked me through various issues that maybe hindering my sleep. Issues and areas that really needed to be looked at, addressed and dealt with honestly. The author really helped provide solutions and scripture to help remedy and start a healing that leads to better sleep and wholeness. I highly recommend this book if you struggle with sleep like I have. I now look at sleep in a whole different way. This book was an answer to my prayer.
Are you having trouble with sleeping? Then this is your next book to read. Knowledge is a great thing to obtain. Dr. Laura teaches in this book practical ways that will help you to sleep better. If you have stress, anxiety, worry, lack of peace that can hender you from sleeping well. God wants us to sleep well and to be at peace . Your answers are here in this book! I urge you to get this book.
I knew I wanted to get this book in my hands ASAP when I saw the words on the bottom of the book that said Stress Less, Sleep Better, Dream More. This book is amazing, so many golden nuggets and details for everyone. But I must say that Chapter 6 is a game changer for me. I especially loved being reminded on page 141 about a few examples of women in influential ministry. A must read and a great gift to share with everyone.
I'm giving you permission to skip straight to Chapter 3 and get started. (But make sure you go back and read the first two chapters.)
Seriously, though, what a powerful book. As a person who works in freedom/deliverance ministry, Laura's teaching on monitoring and familiar spirits was life-changing for me. We're never to free to be set free even more.
Such a great book for the chaotic world we live in!
Laura has done it again! I have read several of her books and like all of the others, there is so much practical and useful information included in this book as well. I love her acrostic - PRAYERS. It is very helpful! I’m looking forward to starting the “10 days to a lifetime of deeper sleep and dreams program”. Get the book; you will be so glad you did!
This is not what I expected. Although there is a lot of research data given, it is not a devotional, if that is what you are expecting. I was overwhelmed by all of the information. Yes, there are bible passages mentioned.
I was expecting a devotional type of text, not heavy on research.
I’ll be honest…I couldn’t finish the book. I felt so many red flags after chapter two I decided to look up the author and it confirmed what I was sensing. The book pointed me more to the author and selling her books or products than to Christ as our only source of peace. I seriously wanted to like this book. I can’t recommend it in good consciousness.
A well written, informative book with great ideas on how to get a better night's rest. I especially enjoyed learning about the different type of dreams and what to do with them. I'm looking forward to working through the 10 day video course at the end of the book!
While there are some good ideas in the book, I was stressed just trying to read it. I can't recommend it but others may enjoy it. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a galley of this book for review.
Loved reading Give It To God And Go To Bed. Has helped me to understand some issues to praying and opening my mind. Will definitely be rereading and going into more depth of studying the Bible. Putting two and two together. This is one of those books that you want to share.
Laura Harris Smith, N.D. has done it again. A well written book with heartfelt advice. I am looking forward to using some of her techniques to 'Give it to God' in areas of my life.
I loved this title for this book and the book is a good read. For someone who has a belief system and faith but also worries, this book was a huge help.
I’m settling on 2 stars. There were many 5 star concepts and ideas, but this book was so heavy on religion and the author’s personal work that it fell down for me.
Requested this because I was going on a retreat and needed a devotional to share with my friends. Sadly retreat was cancelled but I am enjoying this a lot.
I think there are a lot of us in this day and age that struggle with sleep at times. Give it to God and Go to Bed by Laura Harris Smith, N. D. looks at sleep struggles from a Christian point of view.
Give it to God and Go to Bed helps you look at the issues and struggles that you have that may be stealing your sleep. She encourages you to look at the stressors in your life, your environment at nights, spiritual warfare, your inner voices, struggles with social media, inner spiritual struggles, struggles with other people, and more. Smith is a naturopathic doctor who encourages people to look at all aspects of their lives to have their best health and to live the best that they can for Christ. There are 10 chapters in this book just full of good information. At the end of each chapter, there are questions to ask yourself. She really encourages readers to take the time to answer the questions. Then at the back of the book, she has a 10-day program to help readers make lasting changes using what they have learned in the book.
I was already familiar with Smith as I have her books, Get Well Soon and the Healthy Living Handbook so I was looking forward to this book. I do like a lot of the helpful advice and thoughts about Christian living. However, Give it to God and Go to Bed does have some political commentary in it that didn't resonate with me. I didn't remember any of that from the other books. I am not a fan of Mike Lindell and she tells his story and pushes his pillow in this book. This book also makes references to Charismatic teachings so it may not be for everyone.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions within this review are my own.
