Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.

That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.

In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.

In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.

In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.

Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]

Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.

Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.

The review contains spoilers!

I honestly believe it’s impossible for this manga to have even a single bad chapter or volume. But anyway, I want to run to continue the story so here are some of my thoughts on these three volumes.

— The fact that Griffith had the apostles kill Flora.. I can’t remember the last time I despised a villain this much. I genuinely wish him the most painful and drawn-out death in the history of the universe.
— The new armor? HELL YEAH!!
— I absolutely love the change in Guts, especially how he keeps asking his companions how they feel and thanks them for their help.
— SKULL KNIGHT!!!
— Guts finding new companions is the best thing that’s happened to him in recent chapters.
— Zodd needs to die. Preferably the most painful death possible.
— GUTS AND CASCA!! The way Guts "wakes up" from his rage by remembering Casca..

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ description

— Casca smiled!!

I know a lot of Berserk Guys(tm) hate the troll chapters and the introduction of Schierke the witch, but it’s during volumes 25-35, or the Millennium Falcon arc, that Berserk suddenly became the most exciting, ambitious piece of fantasy I’ve ever read, and a deeply moving exploration of the lifelong trauma of rape. It’s the most convincing PTSD guy propaganda ever written. Every close-up of Guts barely smiling at someone to show that he’s proud of them nearly moved me to tears. When he finally put on the Artorias dark souls armor I might as well have been standing on top of my kitchen table and cheering. When Guts looks at his new friends and thinks about how he never knew he’d feel like this again, I almost passed out.

I also watched the 1997 anime adaptation of the golden age arc around here and it just made me appreciate the series even more - I’d recommend it on Susumu Hirasawa’s soundtrack alone.

I like Puck, and Isidro is a good combination of goofy and earnest. The rest of the group that has gathered around Guts -- often including Guts himself -- is terribly unlikable. Casca has spent thousands of pages at this point serving as nothing more than a MacGuffin, which I have to say, it STILL really sucks that Miura would so thoroughly destroy the only complex female character he had ever managed to write, only to turn her into a prop and a perpetual plot device. This time, Casca is mostly a prop for the attempt to redeem Farnese. Lots of internal monologues along the lines of, "wow I'm a useless piece of shit, but I think I care about Casca's safety!" It's lame.

Schierke, the young witch, joins the party, and immediately takes on the role of an unrelenting, insufferable font of exposition. The thing about magic is that it's just so much cooler when it happens without hundreds of pages of convoluted word-salad explanation. We'll see if she becomes less boring over time. I have my doubts.

Serpico has his moments, but his awful backstory still mars his cool factor.

When Schierke isn't filling the pages with a bunch of babbling nonsense, there's a plot about a village besieged by interdimensional rape trolls. The only thing saving this mess from a single-star rating is the few tastes of Griffith's influence we get, the most potent being the battle between Guts and his motley crew against the new Band of the Hawk, during which Guts finally receives his iconic Berserker Armor. It was a long read to get to that point, though, and I fear that the levels achieved in earlier arcs might be a hard reach from this point onward.

Berserk Volume 9 continues the troll arc which I won’t lie, is not my favourite, however I can see the reasoning behind it. It gives Miura a chance for some world-building in a safe, low threat environment and is clearly setting up what’s coming next!

The artwork is always next level insane and I adore this series with my whole heart!

Berserk Deluxe Volume 9 continues its excellence. We finally see Guts acquire his Berserk armor, and it looks absolutely incredible. Interestingly, this arc marks the point where I originally stopped reading the series, so revisiting and reading it again after all these years brings back memories.

I particularly appreciate the moments with the witch and how Guts offers her comfort despite her self-doubt. The way Guts views his new companions, not as replacements for the Band of the Hawk but as a sort of new iteration, resonates deeply. Witnessing him become slightly less burdened by depression and experience more happiness is genuinely heartwarming.

The action remains as brutal as ever. This volume features some truly impactful kills and significant moments for each character.

The final arc in this volume feels a tad weaker. I've never been a huge fan of this particularly powerful king character. However, Griffith's return in the final pages definitely injects a renewed sense of engagement.

I'm rating this volume a solid four out of five.

This shit is just soooo good. The spectacle. The little emotional moments. I am crying and cringing with pain and yelling OOOHHHH at the top of my lungs. The art is so gorgeous, the fantastical elements so creative and terrifying. Rocks my socks.

"All you'll find out there is your own battlefield."

Amazing from start to finish. The world of Berserk is absolutely brutal.

Three things stuck out to me within this deluxe volume.

(1) The storyline surrounding the trolls was super disturbing. First, Guts and his entourage must fend off the trolls and ogre attacking the town. After barely making it, Guts must venture into the spirit world and troll's lair to rescue Casca and Farnese, only to fend off another horde of trolls and face one of the five Godhands' angels.

(2) Gut's acquring the berserker armour. Absolutely incredible and heartbreaking at the same time.

(3) Guts and his companions are seemingly becoming a little family; watching each other's backs and looking out for the wellbeing of their comrades. We all know that Kentaro Miura will be hitting us in our feels soon if he's trying to give us a sense of heartwarming comradery.

I'll say it again and again: such an amazing series.

this volume was both incredibly exciting and terribly frustrating. i dont know what's thr point of casca anymore. The worst part of it is that casca was interesting in a way her role in golden age arc becomes more profound as the series go on, but incredibly tragic how terrible her role gets post that.

when Guts donnes the armor, it was as if I have trudged through thousands of pages of nonsense for this very moment. the fight gets incredibly violent, as is the case in general, but there is a certain degree of ruthlessness to it, almost manic in his response.

a bit of an unbalanced volume, but quite enjoyable.

Probably contains the coolest fight scene of the entire series so far? Can't believe I'm saying that after everything else that's happened but we've ascended further

Vol. 25 - Guts and his party must protect a nearby village from a massive army of devilish trolls with his sword and some surprising magic, but it’s too strong for Schierke and it’ll separate them into dangerous grounds.

Vol. 26 - Separated from Casca and Lady Farnese, Guts and the others must make their way through a chamber full of more trolls and a very unexpected distraction of beauty. Later, a shocking turn involving Schierke’s mistress occurs and we see a battle between Guts and the hulking Zodd and another unexpected foe.

Vol. 27 - Guts finds himself up against a dark armor that severely affects pain on him physically and mentally, leaving Schierke to rescue him with her magic. Meanwhile we are taken to a literal city of corpses where Princess Charlotte is being held while an evil emperor will unleash his hidden powers on all who challenge him while Griffith reunites with her.

A (100%/Outstanding)

"My body's not all that delicate." hey so what if I died on the spot???

My total cry time for this series is now 28, I only cried twice during this one!

General note: I cannot believe that guts is canonically like early twenties... he's SO young someone let him sleep why does he look like that and its so funny watching him take on a like "experienced/mentor" role within the group bc like he is soooo young what the hell.

I love Serpico and I'm so grateful for him, I think he is the only human who could and would actually kill guts if needed and unfortunately I am GRATEFUL at this point.

Also I love Shierke so so much she is so special to me and I don't exactly know how to describe her and guts' relationship but I think from his perspective its almost sibling but not quite?? and I love how he is soooo patient with her and I am also grateful bc she is literally the only one who can save him wahhhhhhwahhhhhhhh

my boy had better learn FAST

As I alluded to in the previous volume's review, I'm not the biggest fan of the troll arc, but I think it's a necessary lull to accomplish some world building in a low stakes environment and to set up some stakes for what comes immediately after, which is pure heater. Volume 26 is thoroughly gripping with the fight by the tree and 27 is a good de-escalation and set up for what is going to happen next.

I think I just have to accept that Kentaro Miura is just not that interested in nuanced character development anymore. Technically there is character work, but it's all very bland and uninteresting. Isidro learns to care about people a little more, Farnese realizes that she is capable of redemption, and Guts becomes a little nicer to Schierke. None of the development feels like it is hard won- it all feels inevitable. Isidro doesn't have to suffer any consequences for his past brashness, and neither Farnese nor Guts have to really wrestle with the horrible things they did.

This volume feels like it simplifies the series' main theme about the inscrutable, agonizing, and universally dark reality of identity in to a simplistic good versus evil conflict. Characters aren't wrestling with deeply complex and realistic inner conflicts anymore. Instead, they just have to learn to believe in their own power and in the power of friendship. It's incredibly disappointing because the first half of the previous volume established that Miura still has the chops to write incredibly idiosyncratic character studies that reflect the endless unknowability of human consciousness. It never feels like, in this volume, that the characters are mired in their own sea of thoughts. Instead, their brains seem to perceive an obvious right path and an obvious wrong one.

The themes are also flattened to the point where they just feel like hollow imitations of actual discussion. When Guts is confronted by Slan with the choice to lose himself to revenge and desire, what is being established thematically that hasn't been thoroughly covered? Slan being a seductress femme-fatale type and evil always rubbed me the wrong way, too, because it is lazy and doesn't say anything about the dangers of giving in to immediate desires that I haven't heard before. It also just reinforces that Miura seems to think that sex is bad and terrifying despite being entranced by it.

The ignorance of the villagers and the priest feels heavy-handed as well. I get it, being full of fear and ignorant is bad. I feel like this theme was approached with far more nuance in volume 6 when the writing still was quite impressive because it explored why and how people utilize religion to justify their selfish desires. It didn't just state that they were bad for doing so. Besides, the villagers and the priest are converted to Schierke's way of thinking without much in the way of suffering, or loss. It's easy to believe in magic when it is right in front of your eyes. What even is there to learn here thematically?

This is not even to mention everything beyond the trolls/Qliphoth section feels unbearably repetitive. It's more of Guts overcoming normal physical limits and being a badass. It's more mustache twirling rapists who are actually demons in disguise. It's more giant knights skewering red shirt minions in battles that have no tactics or any kind of anchor point for me to give a shit about.

The art continues to amaze me, despite the writing tanking in quality. The sections where Schierke is performing elaborate magical rituals are particularly notable for the abstracted depictions of various entities, heavy use of black space, and elaborate swirling lines. The creature menageries in Qliphoth continue to demonstrate Miura's endless knack for thinking up more unique monster designs than I feel like I could create in a lifetime.

Am I just in this for the art now? Is this series all style and no substance at this point? Miura is fantastic at writing characters when he wants to but it seems like he just lost interest. In fact, this volume feels more like a generic shonen manga than anything that came before it. Volumes 1 through 5, I was starting to wonder if Berserk was going to become my favorite manga I have read thus far and now I doubt that is going to become the case once I catch up. I am going to keep going with the hope that things get better, but I am starting to fall out of love.

(This and Deluxe Volume 8 count as one book combined in regard to the Reading challenge).

The biggest takeaway from the latest chapters, after a long "troll" storyline, is Guts’ new party. While they might not have the same legendary "cool" factor as the original Band of the Hawk, they are a solid group that brings a new energy to the story. But the real highlight is finally seeing the Berserker Armor in action. It feels like the last piece of the puzzle has finally been found.
The stage is set. It’s officially Berserk time!

I love the new witch addition to the group. The black armor is so sick 😭 it's crazy how well they portray Griffith as a savior and God to the people. Like when princess Charlotte is looking up at him while they're flying. It's all glamour and then it pans out to the demonic thing flying them. So ready for the next book

While the series continues to be well drawn, with lots of colorful fighting, I feel like it’s becoming less clear exactly what we’re fighting for. I’m hoping to see some plot development that ties more directly into the overall story in the next volume, because part of me is starting to find the whole thing just a tad formulaic.

As said before, "Trolls!" is never going to invite the kind of rapturous attention that other, larger, more cosmic arcs in Berserk can, but this low(er)-stakes episode does behoove the new gang quite nicely - an environment in which they can all glom together in a way that makes all their dynamics crystal clear. That it dovetails into the bonkers 'Uterus of Darkness' excursion, and the Berserker Armour coda only helps to fuel the story's necessity. If Berserk were a TV series, then Deluxe Volume 9 is the premier of a new season. There's a lot of heavy-lifting needed to crank everyone into position, but it's vital stuff, and crackles with the excitement of a new beginning. Guts is manga's saddest boy, and it's nice to at last see him get a semblance of peace and community again.

Things are picking up again! I really enjoyed this volume, a lot of great action and a lot of Skull Knight, the coolest motherfucker in the series. Not as heavy on the emotional exploration that’s key to a good Berserk story arc, but Schierke’s character growth here nearly made me tear up. I didn’t even mind the more transgressive aspects of this volume, they seemed to be written and drawn without the strange exploitative eye Miura has been using before. After getting over the shock of the disappointing plot progression I’ve mentioned before, I’m ready to see if this series can climb back to its peak.
