It is the universe's most famous and inspirational coalitions of all time. It has boldly gone where no pop culture franchise has gone before. It is the foundation for a thriving community of passionate fans.
Creator Gene Roddenberry said Star Trek "was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms . . . If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there."
After more than 50 years, 11 television series, 13 movies, and countless fan conventions later, Star Trek fans of all ages continue to gather—in person or virtually—and enjoy, share, and live up to Roddenberry's optimistic vision of the future.
Fully authorized and filled with full-color images spanning the entire canon, Star Trek: Starfleet is... celebrates of Roddenberry's vision. This commemorative book highlights 50 of the key traits of the Star Trek universe and demonstrates, through memorable images and beautiful artwork, how these ideals are personified by everyone from Kirk and Spock, to Picard and Janeway, to Burnham and Mariner, and their voyages to everywhere from Earth to Vulcan, from Q'onoS to the Delta Quadrant, and even to the Mirror Universe and back in time—and how they are actively and sincerely lived by the Star Trek fans themselves.
What is Starfleet? Starfleet is fun. Starfleet is not always logical. Starfleet is adventure. Starfleet is brave. Starfleet is compassion. Starfleet is diverse. Starfleet is evolving.
And it is by sharing their passions, supporting one another through difficult times, celebrating one another's successes, and boldly going into a bright and hopeful future that Star Trek fans show that, above all, Starfleet is family. Starfleet is forever.
Pearlman's inspirational book has some nice quotes, some great photographs, but above all has a measured and thoughtful introduction from 'Star Trek: Discovery' actor, Kenneth Mitchell as he finds out that 'Star Trek' is, above all, a family.
I enjoy Star Trek a lot, recently watched some of the shows on Paramount+ and wanted to check out on some of the newer Star Trek books. As a long-running franchise that perhaps looked like had its day and retired (only to come back in movies and then a revival on streaming, etc.) it has evolved and changed and I loved the idea of looking at a book that talked about what Starfleet is.
It's a nice little picture book of "Starfleet is..." with various words (inclusive, diverse, stable, etc.). That's it. There's a nice introduction from Kenneth Mitchell, nice pictures, and that's the book.
It depends on what you're looking for in regards to how you will perceive this book. I liked it as a long-time fan. If you are not familiar with the characters, shows, etc. this may not have as much meaning for you. And you probably need some reasonable amount of familiarity with the franchise across most of the shows as some of the pictures do require episode-specific knowledge (a picture of Tuvok and Neelix with Tuvix would make no sense to anyone who has not seen that episode, etc.).
It would make for a good gift for a fan, but if you're someone who is a more casual watcher this probably will not resonate as much. I personally liked it and was fine to have picked it up as a bargain buy (and would recommend that unless you're a fan or a completionist of having Star Trek memorabilia, but I would have been better off borrowing it from the library.
Of course, I love Star Trek so I was excited to read this. I love that the book is compact so younger readers can enjoy it too. It's an in-depth collection of images, characters and personality traits that Star Trek fans love and enjoy. This book is an authorized book so you don't have to worry about non-Star Trek related. I loved the images and the notes of inspiration. I hope it inspires people to look within themselves to better themselves, others and their communities.
Thank you Smart Pop for sending me an ARC to review.
*I received this book in a giveaway from BenBella Books.*
I went through this book in one sitting. I really liked that there was so much thoughtfulness put into the Starfleet descriptions and pictures scenes. It definitely made me want to turn on some Next Gen. Very good little book, and would be the PERFECT gift for the Star Trek fan in your life.
I received a free copy of Star Trek: Starfleet Is Celebrating The Federation's Ideals in a Goodreads giveaway and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Me and my kids really enjoyed it. They are now watching the series on tv.
Cute little book that’s images from Trek with a single-word caption. Thoughts.
1. Porthos :) 2. No Lower Decks and only one Picard? 3. Pretty cool they chose the gay couple for love. 4. Going with Archer for thoughtful is not what I would have done.
I thought I was onto something after reading the introduction. Turned out this is just a picture book with a bunch of decent quotes. Only for hardcore fans, I guess.
