4.5 stars. These books are my catnip! There is excellent worldbuilding, an incredible cast of characters, plenty of action, romance and last but not least good character development. I had so much fun reading the first book “Lucky 7” in the Lucky Breaks series (see my book review here) and I’m always afraid that without the novelty of the first book the second book it might be disappointing, but I’m so happy to say it’s not. I was falling in a book slump and needed something different to pull me out and this was just what I needed.

The tone of this book is a little bit different from “Lucky 7” as it focuses more on the characters and there is slightly less action (still plenty, don’t worry). The main focus lies on Sasha and Elena as it is written in first person from their POVs, but also the other crew members get plenty of attention and I have to admit that this crew is fast becoming one of my favorite queer crews. All crew members have their flaws, some more than others, but they are all loyal and fiercely protective of each other. Living in a world dominated by computer software and hardware companies, they have to fight for a safe place to live, and they do this well.
This book has a continuing storyline, so I recommend reading “Lucky 7” first. Lucky 8 gives a recap, and thus spoilers, on the plot of Lucky 7and it is impossible to say much about Lucky 8 without spoilers on Lucky 7, so if you haven’t read Lucky 7 yet and don’t want to read any spoilers about it, stop reading here.

The first half of “Lucky 8” is written from the POV of Sasha and it shifts to the POV of Elena during the second half. Generally, I like it best when the POVs are alternating, but I thought this division worked well as it is split at the right time. Sometimes I still kept hoping to see a glimpse of the POV of the other character though. I like both characters, they are strong independent women and together they are on fire, but in this book my heart went out to Sasha. Behind her gruff demeanor is such a wonderful person, she’s loyal, protective, and you even get to see some insecurities.

The book starts with the crew retrieving and activating Sasha’s clone and of course they end up in deep trouble before they know it. I won’t go into the storyline, I hope you’ll let it surprise you, but Sasha’s clone was another character that I immediately liked. Sasha and her clone may look the same, but they could not be more different. Being just awoken she’s so naïve and sweet and ultimately funny because of it. Reading more about the other crew members was again a pleasure, and I hope to learn more about them in books to come. The characters have their own quirks and one of the crew members is a fully realized AI, how’s that for diversity;)

Like “Lucky 7” this is not gentle storytelling, but there is incredible imagination, it is fast paced and has an intensity and rawness that’s just very addictive. And yes, there appears to be a teaser for book 3, I could not be happier. If you like sci-fi, I highly recommended this!

4.5 Stars rounded up. I broke a nearly 2 year long novel-reading hiatus to pick up Rae's newest novel.

If there is one thing Lucky 7 promised that Lucky 8 delivered in spades it's hot, gender-bending, sexually-charged adventure. The format of the book is the mirror image of book 1, where we see Sasha's POV, then at the midpoint it moves into Elena's POV. This is important for reasons.

In Lucky 8 we saw a lot of the same elements that made Lucky 7 such a fantastic novel. Diverse characters, great action scenes, found family, and hot sex. But with book 2 we got more of the found family element, especially from our two main characters, Sasha and Elena. It really hammers home how even though they started as a team, they really did become family. Not only that, but with the addition of Ocho, we saw a lot of character growth for Sasha, and in part Elena. Character growth is super important for any series, otherwise it becomes stagnant. And I think Sprout is going to inspire the team, and teach all that family can mean more than who is within arm's reach, family can be an ideal too.

One thing I've never been a fan of is when novels, specifically middle books, do that overdone plot thing that so many do. But I think it happened in a way that you knew it wouldn't last. Not only that, you never saw the aftermath of it, besides on Elena's part so it wasn't full of a bunch of angst and bad feels.

One last thing to note is that book 2 picks up where book 1 left off. Oh, and like book 1, we're left with an anxious feeling in the pit of the stomach, because you know more shenanigans are in store for our quirky but loveable team.

Like Lucky 7, if you enjoy a very diverse cast of characters (gender, sexuality, sexual expression, race, socioeconomic backgrounds), hot sex, found family, great cyberpunk action and adventure, then Lucky 8 is a book for you. I highly recommend!

Absolutely loved Lucky 8. It’s another one of those that when you reach the end you’re not ready to leave. I want to be a part of the Lucky 8 family. The characters in the book are diverse and totally lovable. They are all unique and make mistake, but their family that they’ve made is their to give them hugs and love them no matter what. I can’t get enough of the camaraderie and adventure with in. Plus there are dinosaurs 🦕 🦖. I highly recommend this series. I hope their story continues in another book.

And then there were eight!!

And what a great addition Ocho makes. The ending wasn't as surprising the second time around and only got me smiling knowing there's more to come for the Lucky 8.

My only complaint regarding both books is the TERRIBLE Spanish grammar.

My first review of 2021 :) A sequel to one of my favourite books of 2019 :)
.
Another fabulous book by Rae D Magdon, and an unputdownable sequel to Lucky 7. This book has a great mix of thrilling adventure, cyberpunk, action and intrigue. Amidst the action, the book takes the time to addresses two important questions - what is ‘family’? And how far will you go to defend yours?
.
There are lots of twists and surprises along the way, and visits from ghosts of the past, which make this book a very enjoyable read. Elena and Sasha have come a long way from their early days of being at loggerheads with each other - the chemistry between them is searing yet tender, their relationship playful yet genuine. What I enjoyed most of all was seeing a very different side to Sasha, explored in her relationship with the newest member of the crew. I devoured the first read in less than 8 h and can’t wait to go back for round 2!
.
Thank you Rae for treating your readers to such a great book, and can’t wait for the next one!

“Be curious about everything and get into as much trouble as possible.”

“She looks at me like I’m the only person in the world that matters, and the tenderness that glows on her face opens the fist that’s been squeezing my heart. I believe her. Her eyes, her voice. It all screams sincerity.”

“Sometimes what’s morally justified is illegal, and what’s legal is morally corrupt.”

“I have value beyond what I can do or get for people... I’m loved.”

“[S]ometimes things come for you whether you’re ready or not. Not just bullets, either. Things like love.”

This book I pretty much have the same thoughts and feelings that I did for Lucky 7 (book one), and I am not going to reiterate all of that.

I don't think this sequel is unnecessary, Lucky 7 stands fine on its own. I do like this novel, but with a 3rd book being teased... I don't like series, but I know I will show up for that book.

Having a sequel does leave room for new character development. And I ate that up. I love everyone in this series. The found family and seeing them all again was exciting. I liked seeing the relationships develop more. Elena with the team, and Sasha's and Elena's romance, as well as the family relationships that are present in the book.

Furthering critique of capital greed and technologies role? Chefs kiss. We love it here. It's such a fun little series. We got porn, action, and drama, but all with a very present critique of capitalism. What makes this book differ from book one in this critique is Sprout. It's a secret utopian society that exists in this world. It's not totally utopian but its presents a actual grounded and real non capitalist society that fucks. I love the role sprout plays in teaching our characters that a life outside of capitalism is possible. I also like how it imagined what that might look like and how it might be difficult and rewarding.

Only complaint... holy fuck I need a breather. High action you could never imagine. There is no real breather or processing time between climaxes, and it makes it almost an exhausting book to read. The resolution parts are the plot are not there in the way I need them to be.

Also, I apologize to Google Translate.

A great way to build off an amazing first story. The cyberpunk dystopia of the setting is definitely a personal favourite of mine but Magdon really makes the most of what can be done with the setting.

I was worried I would want to read this book purely because it was a return to the characters I wanted more of (And I certainly didn't peruse the blurb before buying) but there was some excellent sequel work done. I find I'm rarely satisfied by a second book featuring the some romantic pairing but Elena and Sasha had a great story arc that felt entirely true to character.

Absolutely here for everything Rae writes in this setting, and excited to know there's probably more coming.

I looooove Lucky 7 and I wanted to love its sequel but I... did not. It's fine. The plot is mildly interesting, even though it has a few holes and a few too many things happen off screen and not everything quite lines up with the previous book. Too much is driven by Sasha's brand new parental urges, and there's a few too many unironic optimistic speeches.

It was an entertaining enough read, and I don't regret spending time on it, but I don't plan to reread it and don't recommend it. Will reread Lucky 7 instead.

Another excellent book by Magdon

I thought Lucky 7 was fantastic and couldn't be surpassed but Lucky 8 is even better.
The relationships that formed in Lucky 7 have grown stronger and adding another family member to their crew only solidifies their bond.
For those who might be a little curious, the very steamy adult scenes are as hot, if not hotter, in book 2.
I absolutely loved the inclusivity. I hope one day our society can accept people for who they are not who we think they should be.

As good as the first, if not better. It’s a very nice build off the first book, and I had trouble putting it down for more than a few minutes at a time. Wasn’t hard to get back into caring about the characters and rooting for them. I particularly liked several of the twists, and I feel that the plot of the book flowed very well. All in all, a very good way to spend some time, and I wouldn’t mind reading more.

Another great adventure with Sasha, Elena and the rest of the crew! Hope to learn more about Rami and Cherry's background in future novels as their dynamic and personalities are intriguing. I am a sucker for side characters and Rae does a wonderful job while never losing the thread of the main plot. I love that the main protagonists are POC and Spanish is intermingled throughout!

Great Read

I loved it! An excellent follow up to Lucky 7 with all the diverse characters, steamy scenes, and intrigue of the original.

Picking up a couple months after the last one left off, and following Sasha’s crew on one last mission. It takes you on a wild ride and leaves the door open for more.

Drags

I've read many of this authors books, however this one drags on and the characters aren't very interesting. Stick with Lucky 7.
