"In war...death is what always happens." Private Eaton's words echo in his own haunted mind. Plagued by the memories of previous tours and dead friends, he strides, eyes closed and unwilling, back onto the battlefield — this time, on a rescue mission. Assault rifle in paw, he is pressured to hold the line for himself and fellow comrades. Facing barrel up, the small albino rodent aims with hope at the enemies of all mice-kind. Bullet fire kicks off a story of tiny valiant hearts and one platoon's journey to brave the deadly dangers for the sake of one bird. On the field, nothing is certain, and everything sudden. Despite the horror of blood and loss, heroes struggle to outlive fate while enemies stalk their shadows. At the climax of his life, one mouse dares to escape the terrors of the battlefield, but will his path be sound or his head crushed beneath the jaws of destiny?

I was given a free review copy of this book and received no other compensation for the review.
This is a short read, about an hour or so of reading. It is set in a world were the rodents and birds have acquired sentience. Mice and their allies, the squirrels, honey badgers and birds are at war with rats and their allies.
While the technology is more advanced (helicopters equivalents are used for troop insertion) the overall setting is more reminiscent of the First World War. Both technology and magic are in use in the war.
Mice are the cannon fodder of the war (their commanding office says flat out that he would be fine with losing 100 mice to save one bird). The military hierarchy is very strict and vertical. The danger of using inexperienced officers with absolute authority becomes readily apparent.
The book is well written and is told from the viewpoint of a very expendable mouse. (A word of advice, don’t get attached to any of the mice characters.)
A short book set in the mythical world of warring rodents and avians. This is no fairytales for reading to the kids at bedtime unless you want to be up all night soothing them back to sleep. Characters are quickly developed to a level the reader connects with only to kill them off. The world is that of meadows and woods but on the micro level of mice, rats and other small animals. The story is short but full of battlefield action between small mammals. Even amongst the small war is hell. I found this story to be entertaining and I wished it didn’t end so soon. The title hints at more stories to come and I for one will read any I can. I recommend this story to all readers.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved this story. As a warning, creatures do die in this war tale. This story brought back memories of my father's tales of fighting in the Second World War. It was a terrible time for the mice who were at war with the rats. There were a lot of similarities in that there were many small skirmishes, in segments of the larger battle going on. I don't usually like stories focusing on war, but this one is good. You get a pretty good idea of what the battle was like and the attitudes of participants in it. Definitely worth reading even if mice turn you away. Good story line, very insightful. You feel like you are actually there. Good writing style keeps you reading to the end.
Fantastic....you identify completely with the main character, the perspective narrative is great. I enjoyed it very much. The story started a bit slow, but man....one the action started it was non-stop. Just one thing.......it ended with a cliffhanger like you'll see at the end of a popular tv series' season ending.....makes you beg for more......
"In war...death is what always happens." This is a great story about fighting rodents. Well written and a fun concept. Good characters or good mice with character. One mouse tries to escape the war will he survive or be wiped out? Ladies you might have to read this standing on a chair?
