October 1925 Severine DuNoir has returned home and continued to investigate the death of her parents. She has, however, reached a roadblock. As she tries to break through, she comes across an unexpected offer of help. While she delves into the history of her father’s life, she also starts to investigate the haunting of an elderly woman. Just who is tormenting this woman and why? Book TWO in the Mysteries of Severine DuNoir. These historical adventures are playful with a lightly spooky edge. In the coming stories, Severine will discover more than she expected, but her sight will never turn from uncovering just what happened to her parents, not even for the dashing, Grayson Thorne or the appealing Charles Brand. Join Severine as she peels back the layers of history and memory all while creating a future of her own. Up Mystery in the Darkest Shadow
The book starts with Severine still investigating her parent’s death and trying to keep her family at arms length. This involves interacting with the Spirit Society, which seems to be more like wading through a cesspit full of snakes. I’ve seen the series described as a ‘cosy’ mystery, but at times I find it quite depressingly dark and moody, especially as the author seems to have Severine spending so much time wallowing in the past. I think Severine, Lisette and Anubis are great characters and I keep reading the books because of them, because frankly the story can be very irritating at times and I can’t believe some of the nonsense the author comes up with.
As for the progress in the story, there was none, it took a whole book to get nowhere. I found the end of the book quite frustrating, which is why I couldn’t give more than two stars.
that ending was more the end of a tv show than a book. ok, the next book gets released next month. but really? getting a little mob-ish for me. money solves a lot but is less of an emphasis than the violet books. it hardly seemed like a mystery.
There were times I felt I needed to be a mind reader. A character would make a remark which didn't seem to follow on from what had been said or happened previously. Ever more characters joining in. Often confusing.
What a waste of time! Severine and friends running after clues, Andre and his villains, and generally finding little information. Ending has Andre attacking again and, of course, escaping because Severine missed hitting him, again, with her gunshot! Love Violet Carlyle series and Poison Ink series but this one is not in the same category. It would have made a decent one book, told in one volume.
Book 2 in the series picks up a few minutes after the dramatic finish of book 1. It's a bit predictable but then again not. The main character is rather young, and so this reads a bit like YA fiction even though I'm not sure it is meant to. I'm curious to see how/when things are resolved for Severine, but I don't know if I'll return to the series or not yet.
So book 2 continues the tale of Severine. She still doesn't know who killed her parents. Her brother is still out to get her. She finds out Oliver and Grayson are secretly looking for Mrs Oliver (Grayson's sister). Not to mention the story of her Black friend and her family. Whew so exciting. On to the next book!
I am enjoying this newish series by Ms.Byers ! Characters that grow each book and more awful people to book and good people to cheer. There is an ongoing mystery (ies) that go throughout the books. I am not saying more as I do not want to ruin your enjoyment.
I have just to read a story that kept going around in circles...I am disappointed that the author couldn't bring this book to an ending....now we have to read book 3...a waste of time!
I don't like this drop off endings because I want to read the next book right away. I have a family to care for and can't have my nose in a book 24\7. The 2 I've read so far are not letting me get any sleep
The series has new characters from a diverse community in New Orleans. I will not give away any goodies...but the plot thickens and thickensm again into a gumbo you do not want to miss.
Love the characters epically the dogs. I km d of like the cliffhangers too. The plot continues to draw you in, a d you can't wait to see how the story unfolds.
Well we now know what the two Englishmen are doing in New Orleans...will their quest be successful? I was very surprised at the abrupt end of this book, hoping the next will give more information.
