Part of the Wrecked universe. Takes place between book 2 and 3.
A short story featuring Morris and his Maggie. (Where Maggie is short for Magnussen, a male, in case you care.) It's sweet and informative. Helps explain Morris and his overall crankiness.
I think this is only the second MM book I've read where the characters are considered to be actually old!
Although it was a short story, I enjoyed reading about a different era and how difficult it was for Christoper and Magnus to even have a relationship, especially during the AIDS/HIV crisis.
I already liked Christopher's character because for some reason grumpy old men entertain me a lot, but I'm glad we got to know him better. I do wish he felt safe enough to confide in his found family though, but the scenes with Evie were really sweet.
4.25⭐, because it's not a full length book and it should've been!
Damn, how did I miss this??
I've read this series a while ago and I didn't particularly like it, so I left out the two short novellas, especially this one, because I specifically didn't like Morris in the other books.
I was such an idiot, seriously. 🤦
🟡 Age gap - 30 years 🟢 MMCs spend their life together closeted by choice 🌶️ Good spice, but the love story is even better 🔵 Both MMCs are vers 🟣 I'm not crying, you're crying
Christopher and Maggie's story is the best story in the series.
Christopher is at present 82 and is a Vietnam vet and a former senator going to the vet gym to work out. He's snarky, more held-back, there's not a sweet bone in his body and he's pretending to be married to a woman - Maggie.
Maggie, of course, turns out to be Magnus, his 30 years younger husband.
We get the beginning of their love story, which was written beautifully.
Christopher was at that time a 52-year old widowed state senator and Magnus was a 22-year old college senior and his potential political aide.
They meet at a job interview and Christopher, who's been closeted his whole life, experiences freedom, joy and amazing connection during sex with Magnus.
Christopher's afraid to come out and destroy his life's and potential future work that could benefit so many others in the gay community, so he decides, after initial enthusiasm, that seeing Magnus isn't a good idea.
After a month they couldn't stay away from each other anymore and they finally got together. Christopher and Maggie decided to stay closeted, maybe out only to the closest family and friends and they actually had a pretty happy life living like that, being closeted was for a greater cause.
I absolutely loved and adored their story and I'm so sad the author decided not to make this into a full length book. Why so?
Such good characters, an amazing premise, yet the story that should've been told in full, remains a little novella.
I'm not a big fan of such a huge age gap, but Christopher and Maggie are soulmates. ❤️
A nice little story that def makes me want to go read the Wrecked series. Magnus & Christopher have the largest age gap I’ve ever read about. But it’s not icky. It’s quite hot, and I like that Christopher’s braces and arm crutches are no big deal, just a fact of life. The story was not about that. Thank you!
The telling of how that cranky senior met his life partner. HEA. Standalone or In Series Order. Optional. Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ ½ 3.5/5: Romance with few explicit sex scenes that use all the naughty words. MM Romance Tropes: Age Gap, Politics, Closested, Virgin, Military, Disabilities Setting: Austin TX, 90’s Subplots beyond the main & romantic plotlines: Tight on telling the love story of the couple. Character Morris: Crotchety, Guarded, Closeted, Gym Rat / Senator / Vet Character Magnus: Loving, Respectful, Political Aide / Writer Best Meeting Place: I love a gazebo.
Note: I provide full star ratings for books I complete, aiming to accentuate their strengths while refraining from negative critiques.
This was a beautiful story, told as a flashback so the age gap doesn't feel as intimidating as it would in the present. The backdrop of the AIDS crisis was light, but impactful and well-handled. So well done.
I loved reading about Morris and Maggie. Morris is a bit much but after hearing his love story with Maggie, it makes sense. A sweet and short romance in the Wrecked world.
I enjoyed getting to know Morris a little more. However, I'm not sure I bought into the 30-year age gap. But that is probably just a me issue. Age gaps that big are never my favorite.
